UYO—AN unprecedented flood in the history of Akwa Ibom State has sweptthrough Itak Abasi fishing community in Ibeno Local Government Area ofthe state leaving in its trail six persons dead and 17 others missing.

No fewer than 40 fishingboats were also swept into the Atlantic Ocean by the flood. The villagers who described the incident as atsunami, said the flood swept more than three quarters of their oncelively community into the ocean.

Governor Akpabio who visited the island, weekend, expressed sadness over the disaster, assuring that he would take care of the victims andensure that they were relocated in a safe settlement.

The governor also directed the Local Government Council to gazette names of all victims affected and to forward the list to his office.

Akpabio who was touched by the plight of the victims, asked the council Chairman to arrange a make shift shelter for the people who hadbeen suddenly rendered homeless as the agony of those who lost theirloved ones lingered.

However, Vanguard learnt that Akwa Ibom State Government might not be able to address what appeared to be its worst flood disaster alone, except the Federal Government and the other agencies collaborated withit.

Executive Director, Projects, of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Arc. Esoetok Etteh who hails from the area toldVanguard that the 15, 000 strong citizens of the settlement needed helpas the flood had wrecked havoc on them.

Some of the residents told Vanguard that they were worried because the flood had washed away nearly all their fishing materials and hadtaken over their only primary school and health centre.

Vanguard was told that the attention of ExxonMobil, a U.S. international oil company was drawn to the impending danger, but thatthe company was allegedly insensitive to their plight. Vanguard alsolearnt that in 2002, Hon. Nduese Essien, the current Minister, Housingand Urban Development had advised the people of Ibeno to channel thematter to NDDC and the National Assembly through him.

In 2008, the Senate Committee on Environment visited the area with Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Mr. Umana Okon Umana, andrecommended what should have been done in the area.

Vanguard investigation revealed that NDDC had allegedly awarded the contract to reclaim the land, said to be receding at about four metresyearly to a certain firm at the contract value of N6 billion, but threeyears after, nothing had been done even when the said firm had loadedshoreline protection equipment that had long been rotting at Upenkangvillage in Ibeno.

Councilor representing Ward II of the local council, Patrick Usenekong, who was evacuating some of the people trapped by the flood, told Vanguard that some of the people trapped by the flood now lived ontop of their houses or on roof tops.
Usenekong said: “We haven’t seen anything like this in a decade. The last this happened was 25 years ago.”

At press time NDDC had donated relief materials worth about N500,000 comprising 700 tubers of yam, 60 bags of rice, 60 gallons of groundnutoil and other food items.
NEMA also donated materials worth N5 million including 300 mattresses,300 bags of rice, 300 buckets for carrying water, 30 bags of beans, while ExxonMobil was said to have only made promises of support.

Prayer Warrior's nation.

Prayer Warrior's nation.

You must be wondering who “they” are! Well, ‘they’ would be the political gladiators and the men and women who hold sway in Nigeria as the custodians of our destiny.

I know you would also want to ask me where they want to have us. Well, they want us to feel dejected, believe there is nothing we can do. If you go through most of the write ups by op ed writers and blogs, you find a common theme of calling on God (predominantly amongst those who believe in a supreme being) to come and liberate us from the celestial human lords who hold sway in Abuja and all the nook and crannies of Nigeria.

But do you blame Nigerians? Even the most liberal of critics, in private, discuss the state of hopelessness. One public thinker recently opined that only a bloody Jerry Rawlings model revolution can save us from the blood sucking vampires we call political leaders in Nigeria

Those who have tried every democratic option from civil disobediences, open letters, lobbying, campaign, blogging are now so tired that some simply say they will not mind a Thomas Sankara model military coup to save us from a leadership long on facebook promises and short on delivering even the most basic of needs and electoral promises.

What is most appalling are those who surround the current president of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan. The same men and women who fret at the mention of the name of certain cabals of few months past, have now turned themselves into a new cabal. They who kept quiet when the constitution of our Country was being trampled upon, are now the ones who feign surprise when we question the profligacy of the new man in the saddle.

Like Musa Yar’Adua, the current President appears to be a prisoner of some sort - imprisoned by a greedy cabal. Let us be clear, we seem to have replaced a mild gluttonous cabal with thirsty vampires. They flock together and do whatever they like. The voice of the people is of no consequence. The legacy of the current government would probably be a post mortem of Waste! Waste! Waste! And more Waste!

Let us take a look at the borrowing from the World Bank. A proposal to get a loan of One Hundred and Thirty Eight Billion Naira from the World Bank was justified by the minister of finance Segun Aganga with some Goldman Sach coated explanation before you could say Goodluck Nigeria. Anyone calling for a review was seen to be lacking in the understanding of how modern economics work.

In Britain, from where the minister was borrowed, the government is cutting down on waste and saving for the future. Well the opposite is the case in Nigeria, a government going cap in hand to international financial institutions decided to budget a huge sum of money on a 50th anniversary celebration. By the time President Goodluck Jonathan “consulted” with his over 150,000 fans on face book and coordinated some gyrations with the PDP controlled law makers, the ‘owambe’ bill had risen to 17 billion Naira.

They were not finished yet, the President’s Power committee set up to look into the power palaver in Nigeria had budgeted almost 900 million naira on food, cars and hotel bills for 73 members of staff for an assignment that will last 12 calendar months. Not completely satisfied, Mr President and the men and women who swore to protect us, fancied some modern executive jets.

If the men and women of God in churches can play with executive jets, why not spend 23.2 billion naira ($154.3 million) on a a Gulf stream G550 and two new Falcon 7X Aircraft. What is wrong with the jets bought by Olusegun Obasanjo? They say it’s Tokunbo, how about the jets bought by Babangida? Not good enough? Well did Abacha not buy some too? They can’t find them.

We are in trouble, but we should not be overwhelmed, the battle to save Goodluck Jonathan from his own blood sucking cabal is now. After all, Goodluck did not fight to protect our constitution; neither did his array of special advisers. It was ordinary Nigerians who marched on the streets of Lagos, Abuja, New York, London and many more who rightly called on Turai to release power to a man who was only used to being in the shadow of his ogas.

His inexperience of taking the reigns of power have been brought to the fore in his allowance of some sycophants that have introduced the ethnic card, saying Goodluck Jonathan is spending “our oil money.” Niger Delta money? Is he spending it on the people of the Niger Delta? No. This man and those who surround him are milking your common wealth. If Jonathan loves the Niger Delta so much, we should have witnessed oil clean up exercises going on in all nook and crannies of that blessed region. Like President Barack Obama did in America, our President would be taking a dive in at least one of the local rivers in the Niger Delta. But No! Mr President wants Jets, He wants to Party and He wants more money from the IMF.

Our president is either in bondage, confused or at best unconcerned as it is “our time” to have a bite of the National Cake - oh sorry, the Niger Delta cake.

But it is not too late.

The president can change. He will be excused if he spends a greater percentage of the money to clean up the mess in the Niger Delta, a place neglected by his government and governments before him. Surely, the President knows that loads of Ghana must go bags filled with millions of Naira given to some self styled militants won’t solve the problem in the Niger Delta.

He must stop all the waste, the unnecessary spending. He should pick on one issue - be it holding credible elections, or even nationwide security, we will be forever grateful to him. He should not fail Nigeria the way those before him have failed our nation. GEJ can put his foot down and write his name in gold. No one is denying him his God given right to contest in 2011, but he should not sacrifice Nigeria’s development for his own ambition by abandoning governance to the politics of “catch me if you can, will GEJ run or not run?”

For those of us who get frustrated by the minute, it is not the time to moan, it is the time to let go of our differences, support this government when it is doing what is right but stand in its way when it is going down the wrong path. Unfortunately at the moment, it appears to specialise in doing more wrong than right.

We must not be overwhelmed; we can not give up on Nigeria. We don’t have a Rawlings waiting in a Nigerian barrack ready to liberate us from our fellow Nigerians. We are our own Rawlings when we start holding them to account. For every one “liking” Jonathan’s Facebook page and telling him he is the best thing after the discovery of mobile telecommunications, you should not complain when he starts taking you for granted.

We can not afford to fail our children; the campaign for change must not stop. We can go a step further, identify programmes for change. In Nigeria, the Puritan is scarce but we can get something close to a revolution as a prelude to the full blown revolution. Maybe GEJ can still change to change Nigeria. That is a long shot maybe but the least change we need is enough change to stop this slow death. Siddon look is what they want us to do; being onlookers as they milk us dry will be a disservice to generations yet unborn.

Stallone knocks out Julia Roberts at box office

Sylvester Stallone outmuscled Julia Roberts at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday to score the biggest opening of his career with his new film "The Expendables." The action hero's all-star mercenary thriller earned an estimated $35 million across the United States and Canada during its first three days of release, distributor Lionsgate said.

The opening, which was in line with bullish expectations, marks a boost not only for Stallone, who directed and co-wrote the project as well, but also for Lionsgate, whose Lions Gate Entertainment Corp parent is fending off a hostile takeover from investor Carl Icahn.

The film, predictably, played strongest with older men who are nostalgic for ‘80s action flicks with high body counts and loud explosions. A sequel is reportedly in the works.

Julia Roberts, whose career has been almost as cold as Stallone's in recent years, followed at a distant No. 2 with "Eat Pray Love." The big-screen adaptation of a bestselling memoir about a woman's international search for herself, opened with $23.7 million, also in line with expectations.

The drama, which was targeted at older women, was released by Columbia Pictures. The Sony Corp unit topped the box office last weekend with "The Other Guys." The Will Ferrell cop comedy fell to No. 3 with $18 million, taking its 10-day total to $70.5 million.

A third newcomer, the comic-book adaptation "Scott Pilgrim vs The World," bombed at No. 5 with $10.5 million. It marks the second disappointment this month for General Electric Co-owned distributor Universal Pictures, following "Charlie St. Cloud."

From left: Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife; FirstRepublic Minister, Chief Mbazulike Amechi; Anglican Bishop, MaxwellAnikwenwa and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu at the South East PoliticalSummit in Enugu.

ENUGU—SOUTH East geo-political zone, yesterday, unanimously adoptedPresident Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate for 2011 atthe South-East Political Summit attended by prominent Igbo leaders andleaders of various groups from the five states in the zone.

They declared that Jonathan’s presidency would not only further the Igbo cause, but bring the much needed development to the South Eastregion.

This came just as former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has promised that for unity, fairness, justice and progress of the country,he would only serve for one term if he won the election and handover tothe South.

Chief convener of the summit, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, who read the communique issued after the event that lasted for five hours, however, said the Jonathan ticket would depend on negotiation that would enableNdigbo table their expectations.

Mbazulike stated that in consideration of the national quest, Ndigbo would no longer accept to play second fiddle and considered irrelevantin a country where they played leadership roles during the struggle ofits independence.

The communique read: “At independence Nigeria was made up of three regions which later became four regions that were further divided intostates by military fiat over which Ndigbo had little or no say.

“The North has ruled the country for 33 years, the West 12 years, zoning or no zoning, rotation or not. The old Eastern region, for thesake of equity and justice, shall produce the next president ofNigeria. \

The region that produced over 90 percent of the wealth of the country should for a change, have a prime position in the governance ofthe country.

“That given the fact that what is now known as Bayelsa State used to be Brass District of Eastern Region, and that the Eastern andMidwestern regions have been marginalized in the presidency of Nigeria.Consequently, the summit has decided to endorse the presidentialaspiration of Dr Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan.”

The communique added that Jonathan’s endorsement “would depend on a successful negotiation of terms and conditions and agreement over otherdetails.”

In his remarks, member, PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, suggested that Igbo leaders should meet with Jonathan tonegotiate for the collective interest of the South East zone andpersonal and selfish interest of individuals.

Iwuanyanwu who declared that Igbos did not want the position of Vice President as the zone was likely to get the presidency depending on thedecision of PDP, added:

“When PDP adopted zoning as a party policy, it did not take into consideration that a president may die in office and in the presentsituation, the party should look at the Nigerian constitution whichempowers a Vice President to take over administration of the country inthe event of a president’s death.

I will govern for one term, handover to the South, Atiku

Few hours after declaring his interest to contest the 2011 President election, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has promised that forunity, fairness, justice and progress of the country, he would onlyserve for one term if he won the election and handover to the South.

He said: “I will relinquish power to the South on May 29, 2015 to encourage the unity and progress of Nigeria.”

Atiku noted that the road map to the emancipation and development of the Niger Delta was enshrined in his 2007 policy statement because heassembled and personally commissioned technocrats and experts from thearea whose works and recommendations tally with the position of theNiger Delta Technical Committee Report.

Running for one term

Speaking with a political pressure group, Princewell’s Political Associate, PPA, after adopting him as their South-South candidate forthe 2011 presidential race, the former Action Congress presidentialcandidate said: “On the issue of running for only one term in office,it was at the 1994/5 Constitutional Conference moderated by the lateGeneral Shehu Yar’Adua.

The Southern delegates brought the principle of zoning/rotation of power between the South and the North was first mentioned and it wasaccepted by all. So to me, the principle of zoning or rotation of poweris sacrosanct and inevitable and abiding on me.”

Atiku who said he was committed to issuing a white paper on the Niger Delta Technical Committee Report if he became the President said:“One other thing that was achieved during the 1994/5 ConstitutionalConference was the increase in the derivation principle.

From my checks with CBN, what the Niger Delta States have collected in the past ten years exceeds what the entire country has collected forthe past 40 years.

“What I intend doing is to ensure respect for fiscal responsibility through which funds made available to States are judiciously used forthe development of the States.

“On the creation of Oil Producing Commissions, to me that is a good idea but I will prefer to set-up an ombudsman which will be moreeffective and better to monitor so as to ensure that the revenuesderived from oil are used to develop the communities that produce theoil.

“This will require amendments, but I will send a bill to the National Assembly on this as the best option that will enhancedevelopment of the region. States can not be told what to do but theycan only be encouraged.

“I am happy that I have been adopted as your South-South candidate so I am a son of the region, but be rest assured that after dueconsultation with the various interests in Nigeria the best for ourpeople in the region will be implemented.

I have lived most of my life in the region and my businesses run by the Niger Delta people within the region are there for all to see. Theregion shall be well protected during my administration.

“On religious conflict the truth is that we must stop it wherever it exists. One way to do so is to demonstrate that there are consequencesfor such actions. That does not appear to be the case at present. Thatwill change.

However I must say that many times what appears to be religious conflict is more social in nature and can be linked directly to thepoverty we talked about earlier.

“This can only be achieved by addressing the social issues and this is what I will seek to do. Having a desire to improve the lives of thepoor in itself does not make it happen.

Leaders need the capacity to do so. I believe I am your man. Just as I have contributed to making people politically, I have also done socommercially and educationally.

I can make Nigeria a better place; I just pray that I am given a chance to.”
Earlier, the PPA Secretary General, Osima Ginah, after adopting Atikuas their presidential candidate presented six major demands on thepresidency of Atiku Abubakar on behalf of the South- South region.

These included, that “Atiku Abubakar on assumption of office come May 29, 2011 should, within one month issue a white paper on therecommendations and findings of the Ledum Mitee led Niger DeltaTechnical Committee Report and take reasonable steps in implementing itas the future of Niger Delta rested on the implementation of that roadmap towards justifying the wrongs and wickedness the people havesuffered in the hands of past administrations in the country.

Colombia Plane Crash
A Boeing 737 plane crashed on the runway of an airport on San Andres island in Colombia / AP

  • Plane crashes on way into runway
  • All but one person aboard survives
  • Local governor hails it a miracle

OFFICIALS have hailed the survival of 130 people aboard a Boeing 737 jetliner a miracle after it crashed in a thunderstorm, breaking into three pieces as it slid onto the runway on a Colombian island.

The region's governor praised the skill of the plane's pilot, and said it was amazing only one person died in the incident.

Colombian Air Force Colonel David Barrero says officials are investigating reports the plane had been hit by lightning before crashing at 1.49am (4.49pm AEST) yesterday on San Andres Island, a resort area of 78,000 people about 190km east of the Nicaraguan coast.

San Andres governor Pedro Gallardo says 125 passengers and six crew members had been aboard Aires Flight 8520, but the only person killed was Amar Fernandez de Barreto, 68.

"It was a miracle and we have to give thanks to God (that only one person died)," Mr Gallardo said.

"The skill of the pilot kept the plane from colliding with the airport."

Officials said 119 people were treated or checked at local clinics and five of them were seriously injured.

The state government said in an email that passengers aboard the plane that left Bogota about midnight included eight US citizens and four Brazilians. They were not identified.

Passengers said the pilot had announced an impending landing and all seemed normal as the plane descended through rain and lightning.

But suddenly it hit short and then slid onto the runway on its belly as the fuselage fractured. It wound up at one end of the runway, crumpled and in pieces, as passengers scrambled or were helped to safety.

Firefighters quickly doused the beginnings of a fire on a wing, said police general Orlando Paez.

Ninety-nine passengers were taken to the Amor de Patria Hospital on San Andres, said the hospital director, Robert Sanchez.

"It's incredible. For the dimension (of the accident), there should be more," he said.

Mr Sanchez said an initial examination indicated Fernandez de Barreto may have died of a heart attack.

Twenty other passengers were treated at another clinic, according to the national civil aviation agency.

Mr Barrero said the cause of the accident was uncertain. "You can't speculate. Lightning? A gust of wind? The investigation will say."

The airline, Aerovias de Integracion Regional SA, said in a Twitter posting that it has 20 planes, including 10 Boeing 737-100 planes.

It said it was "working and investigating with the aeronautical authorities to determine the causes of what happened".

Mr Barrero said part of the 2380-metre runway had been closed because parts of the plane were still scattered across it. But enough was usable that air ambulances would be able to land.

Mr Paez said by telephone that a group of police officers who had been waiting at the airport for the plane to take them back to the Colombian mainland aided in rescuing the victims

THE stir caused by a female student who allegedly preached against Islam during a Jumat service in the University of Ibadan mosque, hasled to the paralysis of all academic and commercial activities in theinstitution.

A religious crisis was averted on Sunday by the efforts of the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olufemi Bamiro who condemnedthe action of the female law student and appealed to the muslimstudents who cried foul of the action.

Led by the Muslim Youths leader, Ajibola Akeem, thousands of Muslim students in the institution staged protest round the campus yesterdayblaming the school authority for releasing the student to her parent.

As a result of the protest, all gates leading to the institution were blocked by the protesting students who spread their mats on majorroads within the campus vowing to continue doing so until theinstitution acceded to their demands.

Other demands of the students who trooped out as early as 6am were that the female student, Miss Adegunsoye be expelled outrightly fromthe institution adding that her continued presence would beantithetical to peace on campus and a threat to the muslim community;that her fellowship, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry (MFM)should be asked to vacate the institution.

They also demanded that “preaching and disturbing forms of worship should stop in lecture rooms, halls, cabs, buses, cafeteria, laboratories, common rooms and other public places outside designatedareas; that the free period on Jumat day should be between noon and 3pmirrespective of the period it is”

While pleading with the students to calm down, the Vice Chancellor said, “it was the height of provocation. It is unbelievable. It hasnever happened in the history of this university because what thisadministration has been doing is to ensure inter-religious harmony oncampus”.

“This one that happened beats everybody’s imagination. When it happened, the muslim community invited me to the mosque to appeal tothe students. What we promise is that this administration will do allwithin its power to get to the root of this matter and that is what weare doing”, he explained.

He said the affected student had already been suspended from the institution and that investigation into the matter would continue.

Bamiro added, “I assure the muslim students that justice will be done at the end of the day. This is what I am re-assuring them. I havebeen at the mosque and I know the gravity of what the girl has done.”

The protest denied academic and non-academic workers of the institution entry into
The school premises and this resulted into traffic snarl-up asmotorists on the ever busy Ibadan-Ilorin road had hectic time fromgoing to their destinations.

The students marched from one faculty to the other under the watchful eyes of the security agents with the angry students crying forthe removal of the Chief Security Officer of the institution.

Ajibola said the protest was to register their grievances on alleged injustice of the school authority in handling the case of the 400level student who allegedly disguised into the mosque to preach againstIslam.

The lady, whose name was given as Oluwaseun reportedly deceived other Islamic faithful with a veil and sat among other females at theupper chamber of the mosque last Friday.

Immediately, after the Jumat service, muslim students who were predominantly male had gathered to beat the lady but the situation waschecked by the security personnel in the institution.

She was said to have been protected and moved away from the angry muslim students.

Bamiro described the incident as very surprising and unfortunate. He said, “We will look into the matter and ensure that justice is done. Wewill take a drastic step. We must prevent this kind of occurrence,”.

It was further learnt that the incident prompted some Islamic faithful to stage a peaceful protest yesterday morning.
As at the time of filing this report, there was tension and themanagement of the institution was having a closed door meeting on theissue.

Vice chancellor averts religious crisis at Ibadan university

But for a quick intervention of Olufemi Bamiro, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, the academic community would probably have been engulfed in religious violence from the end of last week.

A 400-level law student of the institution, Seun Bunmi Adegunsoye, was said to have almost provoked tension, as she intruded on a Jumat service going on at a mosque within the university community, shouting ‘accept Jesus’.Photos:VC Univeristy of Ibadan & Islamic Mosque

Ms Adegunsoye, a Christian evangelical and a student of the Law faculty, nearly disrupted the ongoing service led by the institution’s chief imam, Abdulrahman Oloyede, as she continued screaming, “Except you accept Christ in your life, you are not safe. All of you here, no matter the number of the congregation, accept Jesus Christ. Allah is not God; Jesus is Lord”.

According to an eyewitness, her conduct attracted the fury of some male Muslims, who waited around the premises of the mosque almost an hour after the service, to deal with her for the “unwarranted provocation”.

Mr Bamiro, however, saved the day. He came to the mosque immediately he was contacted, to apologise to the Muslim students, describing the incident as “very surprising and unfortunate”.

He also pledged a full investigation into the incident and promised to prevent future occurrences.

Though effectively curbed, the incident is already threatening the peace of the institution and that of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, since it occurred last Friday.

Its effect resonated at the institution’s Obafemi Awolowo hall of residence on Sunday, as Muslim students gathered in front of the hall in the morning to engage their Christian fellow students in a verbal war. The mounting tension arising from the encounter was only quelled by security operatives drafted to the scene.

Already, the matter is dominating discussions among notable Islamic leaders and Hausa community leaders in the city, who considered it strange, particularly as it came on the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Planning a protest

A source also informed us that Muslim students of the institution are planning to stage a protest to the office of the vice chancellor and that of the dean of the faculty of law.

We further learnt that they would be demanding a stoppage to the examinations of the law faculty, scheduled to start today, until Ms Adegunsoye is brought to justice.

Addressing journalists at the weekend, Zakariyah Giwa, President of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Ibadan branch, alleged that the incident was a ploy to “perpetuate religious crisis in Nigeria, starting from the campus of the University of Ibadan”, describing it as unfortunate.

He said Ms Adegunsoye’s action was a clear effrontery, alleging that, for the first time in history, she dressed like a Muslim to detract a jumat service in the month of Ramadan at the time the Chief Imam was leading the prayer.

“To our dismay and to the surprise of the whole Muslim community, we learnt that the girl has been released to her parents, the following day, by the university authority, without any reference to the Muslim community, due to the purported intervention of two senior officials of the university. The terrorist is let loose despite the heinous crime she had committed,” he said

Accident: Death toll rises to 72

LAGOS—A MAN, his wife, his three children and his mother were said to be among scores of lives that perished, weekend, in a multiple auto crash that occurred along Lagos-Ibadan Express road.A pregnant woman and her two children were also among those burnt beyond recognition in the accident even as unconfirmed report put the death toll at 72.The man, identified as Mr. Adegboyega, reportedly left his Ikeja abode, Sunday morning, in the company of his wife, three children and his mother. They were reportedly heading for Ibadan in their private car when the unexpected occurred midway. An eye witness who gave his name as Mohammed, said about 72 charred remains were counted. Mohammed who resides in an uncompleted building around the area, added that most of the victims were chocked to death by smoke.Vanguard’s investigation revealed that most of the accident victims who were rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, were turned back because of lack of presence of the doctors, who were on strike.Another eye witnesses who gave his name as Mr. Adamson Chimemela, told Vanguard at the scene: “I rushed five of the survivors in my car to LUTH where I was told doctors were on strike and as such nothing could be done as regarding their being treated. Some of them were partially burnt while others were too weak to even speak.“They were administered first aid by some officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Services who were stationed inside LUTH premises. I did not know what happened thereafter because I left them in the officials care.”Similar fate reportedly befell others who were rushed to other government hospital.Vanguard also gathered that those who sustained minor injuries were treated by LASAMBUS officials at Ojota and thereafter discharged. When Vanguard visited some motor parks around Ojota to ascertain whether any of their members was involved, they all claimed none of their drivers was involved in the ghastly auto crash.Family members who were yet to hear from their loved ones who travelled Sunday, were sighted at the scene of the incident. Three of them gave the names of their missing relatives as Ganiu Omolaja, Gbemisola Ayeni and Adebisi Onaikan. Two of them as gathered, were students of the Ogun State University.Charred remains of the victims were deposited at the Ikeja General Hospital and Gbagada hospital mortuaries, while the damaged vehicles were removed to the Oregun dump site.Meanwhile, normal activities have resumed at the scene of the accident as families and relations besieged the premises of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, in search of their missing family members.Policemen and volunteer individuals were seen removing charred vehicles from the debris to give way to free traffic that was yet to reduce at press time while the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, towing van was stationed to equally render services.A Police officer said the security officers worked all through the night to ensure that the charred bodies and vehicles were cleared from the road, noting: “The situation was really terrible, it took the joint effort of the police, LASTMA, road safety and the fire service to get the road back to shape again. As you can see the traffic is now moving unlike yesterday when this road was impassable.”He said that the team worked all through the night, adding that they would not relax until the situation was brought under control.A commercial motor cycle operator, Mr. Daniel Dubor, commended the officials for their effort in restoring normalcy back to the area, noting: “What happened here yesterday was terrible. I counted up to three buses fully loaded that was burnt with the passengers inside. Besides the incidents led to a crazy traffic jam that lasted for several hours.“As you can see, all the burnt vehicles that littered the road yesterday have been removed except that trailer they are off loading the sugar from.” He said that the trailer in question was suspected to have caused the accident.Emergency centreAt the Lagos State Accident Emergency Centre where some of the injured victims were rushed to, the Chief Matron, Mrs. Olayinka Aderibigbe, told Vanguard that the victims were treated and discharged immediately. She said that three of the victims already discharged were treated of burns, bruises as well as fracture, adding that other critical conditions were referred LASUTH, Ikeja. At LASUTH, the management told Vanguard that neither the dead nor any of the one injured were accepted at the hospital due to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the medical personnel. One of the survivors of the accident, Mr. Isaac Ejiwere, said there was a team of policemen that mounted road block at the point of the accident. He argued that had it been the policemen carried out their illegal activities with sense, such magnitude of accident will not have occurred.Ejiwere said: “We were waiting to pass-by the road block when I suddenly heard bashing of cars from behind. When I got out from the bus that I was travelling in to observe what was happening, suddenly I saw a trailer engulfed in fire. Some of us managed to escape from the inferno.”Dotun Ajala, another passenger who escaped death by whiskers said he would have been burnt to death if not for God.He said the vehicle in which he was travelling was burning after the whole area had been enveloped by smoke, adding: “I cannot say this is how I managed to escape but I believe it was the will of God that I will be alive today. What baffles me most is the fact that the policeman that mounted the road block ahead of us disappeared immediately after the accident had taken place.”Mrs. Abidemi Ashafa told Vanguard that his eldest son, Tajudeen Ashafa, was on his way back from Lagos Island to Isheri town nearby the scene of the accident when a petroleum carrying trailer ran into a queue of vehicles before the road block mounted on the highway by a group of policemen. She put the blame on the policeman asking, “When would the police stop killing Nigerians indirectly because of peanuts?”Ashafa wants the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo to institute a thorough investigation into who gave the order to the policemen that mounted road block on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at about 10.30am last Sunday, stressing: “Nigeria Police cannot continue to fold its arms when innocent lives are being sent to early grave because of few greedy policemen.”

Lamido who spoke in an interview with CNBC Africa Television also said that he would be satisfied with 9.0_9.5 per cent inflation rate inthe country and that creating economic growth was the priority of CBN.

He said in the television interview: “When you have a country of 150 million people with 70 percent below the poverty line, it is extremelyimportant to provide a stable environment to ensure that growth of theeconomy is not hampered by some desire to pursue a very lowsingle_digit rate of inflation.

“We have brought inflation down in the last one year, from 16 per cent to 10 per cent. We think we can do single digits and that is goodenough, nine or 9.5 per cent, would do for me.”

Sanusi who said that two foreign institutions were involved in the bidding process for the rescued banks, as well as several local banksand private equity firms in partnership with foreign banks, added: “Theadvisers have finished analysing bids already received for four of thebanks. We expect the bids for the others to have been completed by theend of this month.”

He, however, gave no further details as to who the bidders were.

The nine rescued banks are Afribank, Bank PHB, Equitorial Trust Bank, Finbank, Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank, Spring Bank andUnion Bank. Wema Bank and Unity Bank were also judged to haveinsufficient capital but did not receive an emergency cash injectionbecause it had a healthy liquidity position.

Foreign banks

The foreign banks that had openly expressed interest in investment opportunities in Nigeria include South Africa’s First Rand, StandardBank and Nedbank. Nigerian banks considering a bid for a rescued peerinclude First Bank, Fidelity Bank, Skye Bank and Diamond Bank.

Chief Executive of Fidelity Bank, Mr. Reginald Ihejiahi, told CNBC Africa television recently: “We need more distribution, we need morecontact points with our customers. The institutions we are interestedin are institutions that have the retail network.”

Vanguard gathered that CBN and Ministry of Finance were in the process of finalising the setting up of an asset management company,AMCON, which would purchase non-performing loans with collateral andchase the recovery of the bad loans in the rescued banks. AMCON wouldalso inject funds and take equity stakes if there were unsecured loanswhich needed absorbing.

Sanusi said much work had been done in the last month to value the bad loans and gauge how much of them were unsecured..

He said a recommendation had been made to the President on the constitution of AMCON’s board and was confident that once that wasapproved, deals to buy non-performing loans from the rescued bankscould quickly be announced.

Sanusi said: “I don’t see any reasons why AMCON can’t take these decisions in the next few weeks,” noting that the recovery of badassets would take much longer.
He added: “As far as the details are concerned, it will take a year togo and audit every asset, to do every valuation, do legal duediligence, set up systems and processes.”

Interest rates have been on hold at 6.0 per cent for more than a year and inflation is in double digits.

Cholera kills 87 in Nigeria

Kano - A cholera outbreak in Nigeria has killed 87 people during the past month while 1 315 others have been infected, official figures showed on Monday.

The outbreak in the northern states of Bauchi and Borno was believed to be because of poor sanitation and the contamination of wells, while Nigeria's rainy season often sees a surge in cholera cases.

Bauchi State has recorded 47 deaths and 1 200 infections in the past month, state health commissioner Mohammed Yahaya Jalem told AFP by telephone from the state capital.

Borno State health commissioner Abdurrahman Terab told AFP on Thursday that 40 people had died from cholera in the state within the previous week while 115 others were infected.

Jalem attributed the outbreak to poor sanitation and the contamination of open wells on which rural communities largely depend as major water source.

"We have mobilised health personnel and drugs in the affected areas and we have stepped up... campaigns on how people can guard against cholera and other water-related infections especially in the rainy season," he said.

Cholera is a water-borne disease and can also be transmitted by food that has been in contact with sewage. It causes serious diarrhoea and vomiting leading to dehydration.

Health experts say a surge in cholera outbreaks is noticeable in Nigerian villages in the rainy season when rain water washes dirt into open wells and ponds.

More than 260 people died of cholera in four northern states in the last quarter of 2009.

SHANGHAI — After three decades of spectacular growth, China passed Japan in the second quarter to become the world’s second-largest economy behind the United States, according to government figures released early Monday.

The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China’s ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower.

The recognition came early Monday, when Tokyo said that Japan’s economy was valued at about $1.28 trillion in the second quarter, slightly below China’s $1.33 trillion. Japan’s economy grew 0.4 percent in the quarter, Tokyo said, substantially less than forecast. That weakness suggests that China’s economy will race past Japan’s for the full year.

Experts say unseating Japan — and in recent years passing Germany, France and Great Britain — underscores China’s growing clout and bolsters forecasts that China will pass the United States as the world’s biggest economy as early as 2030. America’s gross domestic product was about $14 trillion in 2009.

“This has enormous significance,” said Nicholas R. Lardy, an economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. “It reconfirms what’s been happening for the better part of a decade: China has been eclipsing Japan economically. For everyone in China’s region, they’re now the biggest trading partner rather than the U.S. or Japan.”

For Japan, whose economy has been stagnating for more than a decade, the figures reflect a decline in economic and political power. Japan has had the world’s second-largest economy for much of the last four decades, according to the World Bank. And during the 1980s, there was even talk about Japan’s economy some day overtaking that of the United States.

But while Japan’s economy is mature and its population quickly aging, China is in the throes of urbanization and is far from developed, analysts say, meaning it has a much lower standard of living, as well as a lot more room to grow. Just five years ago, China’s gross domestic product was about $2.3 trillion, about half of Japan’s.

This country has roughly the same land mass as the United States, but it is burdened with a fifth of the world’s population and insufficient resources.

Its per capita income is more on a par with those of impoverished nations like Algeria, El Salvador and Albania — which, along with China, are close to $3,600 — than that of the United States, where it is about $46,000.

Yet there is little disputing that under the direction of the Communist Party, China has begun to reshape the way the global economy functions by virtue of its growing dominance of trade, its huge hoard of foreign exchange reserves and United States government debt and its voracious appetite for oil, coal, iron ore and other natural resources.

China is already a major driver of global growth. The country’s leaders have grown more confident on the international stage and have begun to assert greater influence in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with things like special trade agreements and multibillion dollar resource deals.

“They’re exerting a lot of influence on the global economy and becoming dominant in Asia,” said Eswar S. Prasad, a professor of trade policy at Cornell and former head of the International Monetary Fund’s China division. “A lot of other economies in the region are essentially riding on China’s coat tails, and this is remarkable for an economy with a low per capita income.”

In Japan, the mood was one of resignation. Though increasingly eclipsed by Beijing on the world stage, Japan has benefited from a booming China, initially by businesses moving production there to take advantage of lower wages and, as local incomes have risen, by tapping a large and increasingly lucrative market for Japanese goods.

Beijing is also beginning to shape global dialogues on a range of issues, analysts said; for instance, last year it asserted that the dollar must be phased out as the world’s primary reserve currency.

And while the United States and the European Union are struggling to grow in the wake of the worst economic crisis in decades, China has continued to climb up the economic league tables by investing heavily in infrastructure and backing a $586 billion stimulus plan.

This year, although growth has begun to moderate a bit, China’s economy is forecast to expand about 10 percent — continuing a remarkable three-decade streak of double-digit growth.

“This is just the beginning,” said Wang Tao, an economist at UBS in Beijing. “China is still a developing country. So it has a lot of room to grow. And China has the biggest impact on commodity prices — in Russia, India, Australia and Latin America.”

There are huge challenges ahead, though. Economists say that China’s economy is too heavily dependent on exports and investment and that it needs to encourage greater domestic consumption — something China has struggled to do.

The country’s largely state-run banks have recently been criticized for lending far too aggressively in the last year while shifting some loans off their balance sheet to disguise lending and evade rules meant to curtail lending growth.

China is also locked in a fierce debate over its currency policy, with the United States, European Union and others accusing Beijing of keeping the Chinese currency, the renminbi, artificially low to bolster exports — leading to huge trade surpluses for China but major bilateral trade deficits for the United States and the European Union. China says that its currency is not substantially undervalued and that it is moving ahead with currency reform.

Regardless, China’s rapid growth suggests that it will continue to compete fiercely with the United States and Europe for natural resources but also offer big opportunities for companies eager to tap its market.

Although its economy is still only one-third the size of the American economy, China passed the United States last year to become the world’s largest market for passenger vehicles. China also passed Germany last year to become the world’s biggest exporter.

Global companies like Caterpillar, General Electric, General Motors and Siemens — as well as scores of others — are making a more aggressive push into China, in some cases moving research and development centers here.

Some analysts, though, say that while China is eager to assert itself as a financial and economic power — and to push its state companies to “go global” — it is reluctant to play a greater role in the debate over climate change or how to slow the growth of greenhouse gases.

China passed the United States in 2006 to become the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which scientists link to global warming. But China also has an ambitious program to cut the energy it uses for each unit of economic output by 20 percent by the end of 2010, compared to 2006.

Assessing what China’s newfound clout means, though, is complicated. While the country is still relatively poor per capita, it has an authoritarian government that is capable of taking decisive action — to stimulate the economy, build new projects and invest in specific industries.

That, Mr. Lardy at the Peterson Institute said, gives the country unusual power. “China is already the primary determiner of the price of virtually every major commodity,” he said. “And the Chinese government can be much more decisive in allocating resources in a way that other governments of this level of per capita income cannot.”

How Your Waist Size Can Affect Your Health

obese pic

The American Cancer Society recently revealed their conclusion of a study that was published by the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study tracked the health of
100,000 people over nine years. The researchers tracked 48, 500 men
and 56, 343 women over 50 from 1997 to 2006. According to the
report, having a larger size waist doubled the risk of dying from any cause
during the study period compared to the individuals with smaller waists.
Persons with larger waist size were linked with a higher risk of death
regardless if they were normal weight, overweight or obese. For the study, the
waist size was taken by using a tape measure and running tape around the waist
right above the navel.

The researchers found interesting findings in women. The association between their waist size and mortality rate was strongest among women who were at normal
weight. Noted epidemiologist states it’s important to watch your waist as
well as your weight. People should take notice when you’re moving up in
pant size and take that as a warning sign to start eating better and
exercising more.

A thick waist has been considered a risk factor for heart disease. New studies have added more risks due to having a large waist such as respiratory failure, cancer and
other causes. The waist sizes that are considered alarming are 47
inches or larger for men and 42 inches or larger for women.

Losing weight and inches can be a difficult task for people. With determination to eat better and exercise more, positive results can happen. Reducing your
waist size and weight can turn your body into a healthier one.

What are the best approaches to contacting women online? Here I discuss some things to watch out for.

Men, once you have joined one of the leading subscription dating services online you may be wondering what is the best approach to contact women. The first point to understand is that it is perfectly OK to contact several women at the same time. At this stage you are simply trying to make new friends and are still a long way off from concentrating upon one single woman.

However, when you have selected the women you would like to contact from their photo personal ads, it is important not to overstretch yourself and try to contact too many women at once. For example, if you were to send the same e-mail to a number of different women it would be clear to most if not all of them that what you have sent was a generalized e-mail not intended for someone specifically as an individual.

Nothing could be more offputting -- this kind of e-mailing amounts to a sort of spam. In order to contact somebody correctly it is important that you read their profile carefully and pick up on the individual things they say about themselves, such as their hobbies and what interests them. After all, it is their personalities as expressed in their personal ads that has made you want to e-mail them in the first place, isn't it?

A particular woman's photo may have been the very first thing that attracted you, but if you do not like the sound of that woman as a person there is no point in trying to begin any kind of relationship. Also, watch out for the fact that some less than sincere members of dating services may use photos of models to in effect lie about their own appearance.

So, you need to get writing individual e-mails to your chosen female contacts. A good approach is to begin by treating each one as if they were a new colleague at your place of work. So, be friendly but not overfamiliar.

Don't make the initial e-mail too long, and make sure that you show an interest in what the woman you are writing to has expressed as her own hobbies and interests. If these match your own, you could briefly mention your own activities in this context. Most of all, ask some questions to give her a good reason to e-mail you back and continue the conversation.

Avoid trying to "sell" yourself to the other person in your e-mail. You are striking up a new friendship, not undertaking a job interview. Be brief and to the point, friendly and interested in the other person, but not too personal. When you ask questions do not begin to sound as if you are interrogating.

If you haven't had a reply to your initial e-mail after a few days, then try again using a slightly different approach. Before you write this second e-mail go back and re-read your first -- was there anything in it that might have put somebody off? If you don't get a reply to your second e-mail cross this woman off your list and move on to the next.

If she does reply try to respond to her e-mail quickly, as nobody likes to be kept waiting, especially when contacting people for the first time. In your first few e-mails try not to say anything that would embarrass you later if you were to meet her friends. Women sometimes share the early e-mails of a new online relationship with their friends, and this is perfectly normal. But you do not want to be in the position of wishing that you had not said something, later on when you meet those friends.

Finally, as with any online contact who you do not know very well, do not believe everything that you are told and keep in mind the matter of online safety. Never give out your personal details until you know somebody well offline, as well as online.

Oturkpo: Breaking free from cultism

RED-CULTISTS
OTUKPO, popularly called Texas by its residents is the headquarters of Benue South Senatorial District and was one of the most socially active towns in Benue State,.

During the weekends, the hotels in Oturkpo were usually fully booked as many privileged Idoma indigenes usually arrived to spend their weekends and escape the hustle and bustle of major cities and business thrived .

But all these were in the past as Otukpo was losing its innocence, no thanks to the activities of cults that have been threatening to damage the economy and social in the town.

When cultism first reared its in 2007, most residents thought it was one of those trends that would soon pass away..
But they were wrong.

When The Guardian went to Oturkpo , last week, some residents said 78 persons have died in cult-related activities, while others said 68 had been killed.

But, no matter; the situation had got out of hand and something needed to be done.
A retired civil servant, Humphrey Ocheme blamed journalists for the woes of Otukpo.
He told The Guardian:“We have suffered in the hands of cultists and their sponsors, but nobody knows about our plight. You journalists simply sit in Makurdi and focus only on those issues around Makurdi while our youths are dying in their numbers. I am sure that you would not have come here, if you did not hear that the problems is getting out of hand”, Ocheme said.

Indeed the activities of cult groups seemed to have come to a head last week with the killing of John Abel Adeyi by suspected cultists in his family house.

An acclaimed God-fearing student , Adeyi was unfortunate to be home when suspected cultists from a rival group invaded his family home in search of his elder brother called ‘Morocco’ a notorious cult member.

When they could not find Morocco , they dragged the innocent Adeyi from his room and shot him dead in the presence of other family members.

The entire town was angered by the action of the cultists. Otukpo almost turned a jungle as residents resolved to eliminate anyone known or suspected to be a cult member.

In retaliation for the killing of Adeyi, a youth called Eteh suspected to be the leader of the cult gang was stoned and clubbed to death by an irate mob.

Another suspected cultist , Musa Ocheche was last Friday, beaten to death in the town by an irate mob, who claimed t he was a dangerous cultist.

Earlier, another mob had burnt to death, anothetr suspected cultist, a boy simply called Okopi.
But the cultists fought back, attacking those they suspect were blowing the whistle on them and Otukpo became too hot for visitors, who did not understand the strategies of survival .

Residents formed vigilante groups supported by the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the town and Otukpo Local Council .

The vigilante groups , led by Major Enokela Okwenyi(rtd) in collaboration with clan heads led by Chief Akatu Ahubi openened channels of dialogue with youths fingered to be members of the two prevalent cult groups in Otukpo, the ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ .

The communication paid off as last Sunday about 50 cult members , between the ages of 16 and 25 renounced their membership at a public function that was facilitated by the local council administration.

The ceremony which was attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, council officials and police chiefs witnessed each of the ex-cultists publicly renouncing cultism in the presence of the community at Igbanomaje Square after which police detectives took their photographs and particulars.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of Otukpo Local Council, Dr Innocent Onuh said the council in liaison with law enforcement agents have forgiven and granted amnesty to all those who have renounced their membership of cults .

He said the period of grace for amnesty for identified cultists ends this week and those who fail to turn themselves over to the authorities and renounce cultism would be prosecuted.

He announced that the local council has set aside funds for the immediate rehabilitation of those who have pledged to turn a new leaf even as he appealed to the Senate President, David Mark and Minister of State for Niger Delta, Sam Ode, who are indigenes of the council to assist in the provision of resources for the rehabilitation of the ex-cultists.

In his address, Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Mohammed regretted that in Oturkpo, cultism had led to the death of more than 10 persons in 2010 alone.
He expressed happiness that the local council has mobilised the Vigilante Group in the area to fish out the ex-cultists who have renounced cultism after the council promised to rehabilitate them.

Represented by the Divisional Police Officer of Otukpo, Mr Donatus Agaibe, the commissioner said: “We have recorded too many deaths due to cult related activities in the recent past and we see this exercise as a welcome development. It will reduce our work”.

In an interview with The Guardian, Franca Randy, an 18 year-old primary school leaver said she was forced into cultism by her boy-friend who insisted that if she did not join she would lose her life
Stephen Alibi, a 21 year old Ordinary National Diploma holder said he was initiated in his final year.
in school.

One of the youths, 17 year-old secondary school leaver, Oloche Adugba insisted he was not a cultist and was wrongly implicated by his girlfriend whom he did not know was a cultist.

The two predominant cult groups in Otukpo are ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’, so called because of the colour of the edge of the axes that they use as their symbols.

WHEN IT MATTERS, CHELSEA DELIVERS

For all the talk about pre-season crises, when it really mattered Chelsea delivered. We harked on all summer that we couldn't care less about pre-season results and even the Community Shield only held passing interest. August 14th was when it really counted. The result? 6-0, a hat-trick from Drogba and a comprehensive mauling of West Bromwich Albion.

Could we have asked for more? Well, yes, according to the newsagent on World's End Estate. Grabbing our Sunday papers we were asked if we'd enjoyed the match less than 24 hours earlier. 'Sure, what's not to enjoy when you hammer 6 past the opposition?' we replied. The newsagent countered, 'Oh, I heard you didn't play that well.' We stared at Mr Patel with a mixture of incredulity and an Ancelotti-esque raised left eyebrow.

What our newsagent was expecting we're not sure. A mazy run from Cech followed by a lob from the half-way line? A scissors kick from Paulo Ferriera? In CFCnet's book the very notion of us winning 6-0 and not playing well is as ludicrous as Spain being criticised for losing a game at the World Cup. They won the damn thing.
CFCnet hopes that our local newsagent's passing comment is not a gauge of fans heightened expectations. If so, Carlo and his protégés better start knocking in 7 or 8 allied to some mazy dribbles and a few 40 yarder, net bulging missiles.

Following the evening's Match of the Day, a few people enquired as to why the first half atmosphere sounded a little subdued. The answer can be found by looking skywards. Ten minutes before kick-off, whilst thousands queued up at the turnstiles, the heavens opened with a downpour as ferocious as any tropical storm. Soaked to the skin and cold in equal measure, our moods darkened like the blackened clouds as we watched people move slower than a post office queue.

Once we finally did enter the ground and squeezed the water out of our jeans, we'd point out that with Michael Essien in midfield we look a far more solid outfit. Slightly less creative perhaps, and in the latter stages of the Champions League our lack of a 'tin opener' in the form of a Messi may count against us, but nevertheless we look a formidably strong team.

Whether Yossi Benayoun will be the creative 'tin opener' is yet to be seen but the reception he received was as frosty as a snarling polar bear. Poor Yossi is a victim of circumstance - firstly by replacing lifelong Chelsea fan and idol Joe Cole; secondly by coming from our most loathed rivals Liverpool; and thirdly by costing us £5 million more than the Scousers paid for Cole who went directly the other way.
Whilst we trust Carlo implicitly, Yossi's going to have to play some blinders before he evens gets a polite handclap. We would point out that if he scores the winner against the Scousers and celebrates by kissing the Chelsea crest, he'll have entered the pearly gates of fan idolisation. You know what to do Yossi.

To sum up, a stunning first day's opener and a sterling display by the whole team. Even the fans got up for it once we'd dried out. In hearty voice and in great spirits, this is one of the best times in 105 years to be a Chelsea fan. Simply a great day.

Monday, 16 August 2010 00:00 By Regina Akpabio, Seye Olumide (Lagos), Alemma-Ozioruva Aliu (Benin City) and John Akubo (Dutse)

Jigawa flood destroys 200 houses.

Berger-one_news_16-08-10CALAMITY struck at the weekend in Lagos, Edo and Jigawa states with about 42 people feared dead and 200 houses destroyed in multiple road accidents and heavy flooding.

In Lagos, two separate accidents left no fewer than 31 people dead while 18 lost their lives on the Benin-Auchi-Abuja road.

Also, torrential rains yesterday displaced many residents of Jahun in Jigawa State, sweeping away many communities in the town and destroying buildings and property worth millions of Naira.

Meanwhile, rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Highway, scene of yesterday’s accident which is to be embarked upon by Bi-Courtney Nigeria Limited, will begin in October.

Bi-Courtney had signed a concession agreement with the Federal Government in August 2009 to design, build, operate and transfer the highway, which was constructed some 25 years ago.

By the agreement, Bi-Courtney is to expand the road to four lanes from Lagos to Sagamu Interchange and three lanes from the Interchange to Ibadan.

Travellers, mostly worshippers coming from the just concluded annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) were shocked, some shedding tears, others blaming the police, as they watched roasted human bodies involved in the multiple accidents along the Lagos-Ibadan Highway which occurred at about 10.00 a.m. The tragedy happened between the Mobil Filling Station and Otedola Estate Junction yesterday.

In another incident, motorists and residents along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, Lagos were also in tears as they watched the body of a young lady crushed with 11 others writhing in pains when a commercial bus marked XX476-FKJ somersaulted thrice while the driver tried to overtake a Honda car marked DU 348-GGE.

The bus was said to have picked passengers at NARCO Bus stop and was going to Mile 2 when the accident occurred a few metres from Junction Bus stop.

No fewer than 30 people including the 14 passengers inside one of the commercial buses travelling from Ketu in Lagos State to Mowe in Ogun State, an infant who was strapped with seat belt by his parents and others died in the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan highway. The accident involved 16 vehicles, an articulated truck said to belong to the Dangote Group, three loaded commercial buses, two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), two taxicabs and others. It happened near Otedola Housing Estate and was alleged to have been caused by a police road block mounted right in the middle of the highway.

A survivor and driver of one of the commercial buses, Aliyu Yekini, blamed the disaster on the police check-point.

According to him: “Most of the vehicles involved were on high speed but suddenly ran into the police check-point. The articulated vehicle, one of the trailers fully loaded with goods was on top speed and could not apply the brake. The driver ran into other vehicles and there was an explosion.

“When I saw the explosion, I quickly opened the door and jumped out likewise my conductor, leaving the passengers. The rest I saw was the flame of fire and the odour of roasted human flesh.”

Another survivor, Akeem, could not describe how he escaped but the only thing he remembered was the deafening sound of an explosion followed by fire and the multiple crashes.

“Apart from few of us who escaped, the rest victims could not be identified. They were all burnt beyond recognition. It was the fault of the police officers. They were fond of mounting check-points in the middle of the road for no other reasons than to extort money.”

But for the timely intervention of the police, an angry mob was set to protest the illegal checkpoint on the highway. Lagosians including journalists were prevented by armed policemen from moving close to the scene including those who came to verify whether their relatives were involved in the accident.

A survivor in the second accident in Lagos, Lynus Anyim, said it happened at about 3.45 p.m.
He said: “Our driver was on top speed. He was about to overtake the car in front of him when he suddenly lost control. The bus somersaulted thrice crushing the head of the lady seated beside the door while we all
sustained serious injuries.”

Both accidents led to serious traffic snarls in both areas yesterday. For several hours, vehicles travelling to and from Ibadan were held in a standstill as officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and a team of police officers controlled the traffic. It was a similar situation along Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road.

The Assistant Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Fadipe Razak Idowu told The Guardian: “We had the information at about 11.19 a.m. and when we rushed down here, about 20 vehicles were involved and about 10 were already on fire. There were human blood dripping all over the place. We were able to rescue some and took them to the hospitals. The cause was attributed to the driver of the articulated vehicle whose break failed.”
The LASTMA boss, Dr. Femi Osonyintoly said: “It is a pathetic situation and all the related stakeholders are on ground to manage the situation. We cannot really talk of the cause now since we are really interested on the rescue situation at hand.”

In the Edo accident, men of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) were said to be handicapped as their patrol vehicles were burnt by irate students of Auchi Polytechnic a few weeks ago when a policeman allegedly shot dead one of their colleagues.

One of the victims of the accident, Cyril Oboga, who is receiving treatment in a hospital, blamed the driver of his vehicle for the accident.

He said: “I can’t say exactly what happened because it was as if he was drunk from the way he was driving. They first collected money from us at Angle 90 Park in Auchi because there was no available bus but they said they would call another driver to bring a bus. It was some time before they brought the bus. The driver stopped for about three times on the way, first for a girl that was vomiting and in another village at Ekpoma.

“After a short while, I slept off though I am not used to sleeping, but I had to. The next thing I heard was a loud bang and people started shouting and I found myself on the ground. Two people, a man and woman in the red bus died instantly on the spot but in our own bus, which was going to Lagos a lot of people broke legs with serious injuries.”

Mr. Olusegun Ahmadu, Chairman, Project Implementation Committee, Highway Services of Bi-Courtney said in Lagos that everything has been put in place to ensure that the road is put into proper shape for smooth ride by the public.

The company, he said, was not unmindful of the importance of the road as a major link to other parts of the country, adding that the company is doing everything possible to ensure that travelling on the road is enjoyable and stress free.

He said that the intervention would involve repairing of failed sections, resurfacing and creating proper right of way. All the traffic bottlenecks, including illegal trailer parks in Ibafo, Ogere and Ibadan would be removed.
Ahmadu noted that discussions had been held with the trailer drivers as well as other stakeholders, including community leaders, religious groups, traffic management authorities, transport unions and the police on the need to free the road from unnecessary traffic congestion.

In place of the present illegal parks, Bi-Courtney, he said would put in place a Trailer Plaza equipped with modern facilities like filling stations, auto mart, mechanical workshop, shopping malls, rest areas (hotels) for the convenience of the drivers.

In addition, cameras are to be mounted at strategic places along the route to monitor human and vehicular activities, which will help to support efforts of security agencies in combatting crimes on the road.

The company, he said, would construct pedestrian bridges, interchanges to ease intra community movement in view of the massive construction work going on in the corridor and the rapid relocation of people to the area.
According to him, Bi-Courtney has been adding value to the road even before now by repairing the failed
sections, removal of broken-down vehicles from the road and even clearing the Right of Way from Lagos to Ibadan to reduce traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, officials of the company, FRSC, Ogun State Traffic Management Unit were on hand to control traffic on the ever busy road during the week long National Convention of the RCCG, which began on Monday last week and ended on Saturday.

Company officials, police and other security outfits were placed at strategic locations along the entire stretch of the road to prevent the traffic snarl that usually accompanies such a convention, which draws large crowd of faithful from all over the country.

Ahmadu who coordinated the traffic control measure expressed happiness that the company was able to free the road for motorists, adding that the experience garnered would be deployed in the future to prevent a situation whereby people will be made to spend long hours due to traffic congestion.

When The Guardian visited the Jahun Local council headquarters Jigawa State, it was observed that seven communities that included Yola, Takacici, Kabala, Alkalawa, Fandai, Fagen-Kura and Unguwar-Gangare were the most affected by the heavy flood.

No fewer than 200 houses were affected by the disaster as most of the affected residents were seen taking refuge in other parts of the town that were not affected.

One of the victims, Mallam Shehu Bala Adamu who spoke to The Guardian indicated that his family and himself have since become refugees in a nearby town, Kofar-Gabas, as a result of the disaster.

Adamu pointed out that the cause of the flood is the fact that there is no good drainage in Jahun, adding that despite the fact that they had lodged complaint several times in the past, with the authorities, nothing has been done to salvage the situation.

He disclosed that the flood has destroyed his house and property worth N300,000.
Chairman of the local council, Alhaji Idris Iliyasu Dan-Lawan pointed out that the council has directed its community department to carry out an emergency work in the affected areas by draining the water out of the affected areas.

Dan-Lawan added that, the council has also lodged its complaints with the state Emergency Relief Agency and the state Ministry of Environment for their respective actions.

The state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmad Mahmod, who visited the affected areas, directed the state Ministry of Environment to quickly intervene with a view to addressing the menace of flooding in the council.

"Atiku has no party, says Governor Nyako"

Governor Nyako

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state has reinforced the position of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a declaration that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is not a registered member of the party.

The governor while reacting to Atiku’s declaration yesterday to contest the 2011 presidential election under the PDP banner, said the former vice-president cannot run for the presidency in the 2011 general elections under the platform of the PDP because he was not a party member.
Governor Nyako, who spoke to journalists in Yola, shortly after participating in a live local radio programme, explained that the state chapter of the party is being cautious in admitting those defecting from other parties because of the fear that some of them are coming in to cause confusion in the party.

“I only read about Atiku’s activities on the pages of newspapers; even when he declared in 2007, he wasn’t a member of any party, so he is declaring today again with no party,” Nyako maintained.
Peoples Daily recalls that Atiku’s return to the PDP has met with stiff resistance from Governor Nyako and a state faction of the party loyal to the governor.

The Chairman of the governor’s faction, Alhaji Umaru Mijinyawa Kugama, had declared at the weekend that as far as the party is concerned, “Atiku Abubakar is not by any means a registered member of the PDP.”
“Atiku knows that he is not yet a PDP member. He knows that there is a process of admittance into the party, which he must obey if he really wants to return to the party,” he had emphasised.

He condemned the former vice president for registering with a faction of the party in the state that is rebellious to the administration of Governor Nyako.

But National Vice Chairman (North-East) of the party, Senator Paul Wampana, has affirmed that to the best of his knowledge and that of the PDP national working committee (NWC), Atiku is a member of the party.
“As a leader, I have access to some compendium which contains names of the executives of the party that were elected; honestly those that registered Atiku are the party authority in his ward which closes the case that he illegally registered,” Wampana is quoted to have said.

From Ali Abare Abubakar, Lafia

Some unidentified men at the weekend invaded the recently refurbished Nasarawa office of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and carted away the newly installed ‘Mikano’ heavy duty generator.

Policemen posted to man the centre after the theft, confirmed that the thieves overpowered their colleagues who were on duty at the office.

Information on the incident was sketchy, yesterday, as the police were not forthcoming on how two armed policemen were overpowered by the hoodlums. Even the Area Commander in charge of Lafia, Elisha Kazza, who confirmed the incident, failed to throw more light on the issue.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa state Command, Ephraim Amakulor, said they would not comment on the matter until properly briefed by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area.

The management committee of the NUJ, has however, expressed surprise of the theft, directing all inquiry to the government and police. It has wondered how Governor Aliyu Doma’s good gesture should be the subject of such ‘babarism’.

No fat girls' puts nightclubs in spotlight

MONTREAL - Although a Montreal nightclub is distancing itself from an invitation on its Facebook page that specified "NO FAT GIRLSALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!" people familiar with the local party scene say clubsregularly -if not so overtly -discriminate based on looks.

"Everybody knows. (Clubs) are selective," said Stefano Apostolakos, owner of SMAN Productions, a Montreal promotions company.

A nightclub that wants to attract a certain kind of crowd will neveropenly turn people away based on weight, he said, but if people don'tfit in with the club's look, a bouncer can still find some excuse toturn them away -whether it's a long wait time, an expensive bottleservice fee or claiming the club is at capacity.

"(Discrimination) comes with the right to refuse entrance," Apostolakos said in an interview.

Nightclubs can openly turn people away based on age or dress by setting age minimums or dress codes, he explained.

The invitation was posted last week on the Facebook page of Muzique, aposh nightclub on St. Laurent Blvd., and included the ban on "fatgirls," followed by the emoticon of a winking smiley face..

The party was to celebrate the birthday of one of the club's partners onSaturday. The invitation was taken down on the weekend.

"When I saw it, I freaked out. I was livid," said one plus-size woman whoreceived the message as a member of Muzique's Facebook group.

Speaking on condition that her name not be used, the woman said her weight hasnever stopped her from going out -but she won't be visiting Muzique ifit discriminates against people who are overweight.

The management at Muzique said the comment was an accident and they are thinking of posting an apology.

"We didn't even realize (the comment) was there until a couple of daysago, and it was too late to retract it because the event had alreadyhappened," said John Jay, who oversees communication and marketing forMuzique.

Jay says it was the party planners who posted the event invitation, not himself or the owners.

He added that a friend of the club's partner thought it would be funny toadd the line to the event invitation as "an inside joke."

"It was taken down as soon as we found out about it," Jay said. "It was notan intentional thing. It was actually an accident. It was someonethinking he was funny.

"We don't think it's funny at all."

After the invitation went up, a handful of Facebook users expressed theirdisapproval. One user copied and emailed the event listing and thecomments to The Gazette before they were taken off the Internet.

"I found it immature and ridiculous," Joanelle Dufresne told the Gazettein an email. She posted a reaction to the invitation on Saturday.

Another Facebook user wrote: "Is there going to be a weight scale at theentrance? What's the maximum weight to get in? Frankly, I thought I hadseen everything until now."

Shant Kojakian, who owns the Montreal promotions company Look Kool, said weight is not much of an issue at nightclubs.

Race tends to be more of a factor when it comes to selecting people at theentrance, Kojakian said, adding that he's never seen a bouncer tell apotential customer he or she was too fat to get in.

Of course, nightclubs want to attract a certain kind of clientele -people who arewell-dressed and will spend money inside, Apostolakos and Kojakiansaid.

"They'll never tell you you can't come in because of your looks," Apostolakos said.

"But at the end of the day, that's what it comes down to, usually. ... It's the sad truth."
