Tuface D'banj in Collabo ist time ever !

It is no longer hush-hush among insiders in the
entertainment industry. Since late last week, it had become official; two of Nigeria's foremost singers, Tuface Idibia and D'banj have, for the first time, featured on the same song.

Curiously, it took newcomer, Kas, of the Fimile fame to achieve this rare feat. The two music stars were paired in the remix of Kas' chart-topping song, Fimile. Noteworthy is that aside typically chanting his File! refrain without restraint, D'banj, rediscovers his famous harmonica which had not featured in his songs in recent time while Tuface adds spice and intensity to an otherwise intense song.

In a chat with E-Punch, Kas says it was a big honour and privilege for him to have pulled this off because "both of them are stars. Tuface is a legend; one of the biggest musicians in Africa. I respect him so much. He is humble and down-to-earth. D'banj is also very big; a force to be reckoned with and doesn't take nonsense but equally very humble."

Describing how the idea of a remix began, Kas said he met Tuface and broached the idea to him which he welcomed gladly. D'banj did not prove any hard to get either. Thus, the remix.

Like he sings in Fimile, Kas, real names, Kas Jonathan Shobayo, is indeed a Yoruba native from Ogun State though his first visit to Nigeria was in 2005.

In his short, eventful stint in the industry, Kas who fondly calls himself Kas beats, has emerged as one of the fastest rising singers and beat makers with an increasing catalogue of hit songs...

Ejiro Henry, a 19-year old cocaine trafficker, currently standing trial for his involvement in the illicit trade, has been arrested again for peddling hard drugs.

Mr Henry, who was apprehended the second time on his way to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, was found with 167 wraps of powdery material that the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed as cocaine, weighing 2.45kg. “The suspect was first arrested on May 25, for allegedly ingesting 73 wraps of substances that tested positive to cocaine weighing 1.285kg during screening of Alitalia passengers to Italy,” said Mitchell Ofoyeju, spokesperson for the agency. He also added that the suspect was subsequently charged to court and granted bail on September 6. According to him, the agency confiscated the international passport of the smuggler at the time and documented his Italian resident permit for safe keeping.

Premeditated action

Mr Ofoyeju explained that the cocaine was found in a polythene bag inside the suspect’s luggage, adding that he was equally in possession of a valid Air France ticket, with which he intends to “immediately” travel to Italy the same day. “Also in his possession was another international passport, as well as an Italian resident permit, as the travel document recovered from him in May is still in the custody of the agency,” he said.

The suspect, in a statement from the anti-narcotics agency, blamed his involvement in illicit trade this time on the devil, as he explained that his first attempt was as a result of his financial difficulties. “I actually needed money to settle my bills when I was first arrested but I cannot explain this one; I think it is the devil,” he said..

Blame the courts

Ahmadu Giade, the Chief Executive of NDLEA, said that the granting of bail to accused persons allow smugglers to go back into the criminal trade. According to him, the next bail trial date for the first charge against the suspect is to come up on November 4, 2010. “Bail encourages long adjournment, thereby prolonging litigation period,” he said. “It also provides a leeway for accused persons to go back into the illegal trade. When they are in detained in prison custody, cases are decided within a short time because they are usually agitated for their cases to be fast tracked.”

Hamza Umar, the Lagos airport commander for the agency, however, commended officials of Federal Airport Authority for detecting the drug and reporting it to the NDLEA, describing the collaboration as healthy for effective security and safety in the country. According to Mr Ofoyeju, preliminary investigations revealed that the accused was adequately prepared for the crime, as the current passport found with him was issued in March before his first arrest. “The new resident permit also suggests that the accused has established contacts in Italy and he will soon be charged to court in connection with the latest arrest while he will be appearing from NDLEA custody in the on-going trial,” he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the "terribly disappointing" news that Wayne Rooney has told Manchester United that he will not sign a new contract and wishes to leave the club.

Rooney, who will miss Wednesday's Champions League game against Bursaspor due to his much-discussed ankle injury, has personally informed Ferguson that he does not wish to continue his career at Old Trafford.

Rumours that the player wanted to move on have taken up the front and back pages of many national newspapers in England in recent days, with reports emerging that he was unwilling to extend his current contract.

Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game, Ferguson neglected to take questions from journalists but spoke solely - and at length - about Rooney's situation in an extraordinarily candid press conference in which he revealed Rooney's agents told United on August 14 that he did not want to sign a new deal.

Explaining why he would not be taking questions from journalists, Ferguson began: "I know that there could be a million questions on this subject. I can't answer them. I can give an opinion but that creates a side issue that we don't really need to get into, but we would like to present the facts.

"[United chief executive] David Gill had a preliminary talk with his agent at the end of last season, which was to be continued after the World Cup. [Gill] says, 'I've got some bad news for you'. His agent had intimated he wouldn't sign a contract and he wanted away.

"It's was shock. We couldn't believe it because, in earlier discussions - as early as February or March I think - he intimated he wanted to stay, he wanted to sign a life contract. He was happy at the club - he was at the best club in the world.

"I must say it was terribly disappointing when I got the news because we couldn't quite understand it. I had a meeting with him and he said to me, in his own way, that he wanted to leave."

Ferguson also expressed his disappointment that the news was made public and that Rooney has chosen to turn his back on a club and manager that have given him the platform to become one of Europe's finest players.

In a separate interview with MUTV, Ferguson added: "The one thing I said to him was, 'Respect this club - I don't want any nonsense from you'. I don't know if he has done that. I have doubts on that, we are reading all these things about falling out with me and all that nonsense..

"What we're seeing now in the media is disappointing because we've done everything we can for Wayne Rooney, since the minute he's come to the club. We've always been there as a harbour for him. Any time he's been in trouble, the advice we've given him - I've even been prepared to give him financial advice, many times.

"But you do that for your players, not just Wayne Rooney. That's Manchester United. This is a club which bases all its history and its tradition on the loyalty and trust between managers and players and the club. That goes back to the days of Sir Matt [Busby]. That's what it's founded on. Wayne's been a beneficiary of this help, just as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and all the players have been. That's what we're there for.

"There's been no falling out. That's why we need to clarify the situation now for our fans. Because what we saw on Saturday was unacceptable. When we were at 2-2 and the fans were chanting for Wayne Rooney, it put pressure on the players and it didn't do any good for the team. So we've got to clarify the situation and try to do it right."

Reports emerged of a disagreement between Ferguson and Rooney when the player - who had been ruled out for up to three weeks with an alleged injury - said he had not had a problem with his ankle all season.

"The area has created quite a lot of the mystery about it as far as we're concerned - and probably you yourself, although you'll know more than I do - has been his injury," Ferguson said. "First of all, I must tell you that I have not had an argument with Wayne Rooney at all at any time. He got an ankle injury in the Rangers game, and was seen clearly hobbling about before half-time. He actually confirmed it himself in the interview with Sky.

"I spoke to him before the Sunderland game and our planning, based on the fact he wasn't playing that well, was to leave him out of the Sunderland game, make sure his ankle was properly prepared for the next game. Ten-day rest, ten-day recovery, so he could play for England (against Montenegro).

"The hope was, playing for England at Wembley, he could recapture his form and we could kick on. His entrance to the mixed-zone at Wembley [when Rooney told journalists he had not been injured] has created that next stage, which we've had to deal with.

"I was disappointed because we know fine and well he was carrying an injury. We sent him for a scan on the ankle injury - nothing serious, but it needed treatment and he's had treatment.

"We've got to a stage now where ... I feel that we still have to keep the door open for him, simply because he's such a good player, and we've done nothing but help him since he's come to this club. That's another mystery for us.

"I don't know how many times we've helped him in terms of his private life and other matters, and he's not the only one who gets that kind of privilege because Manchester United's that kind of club. We do that with all players.

"It's part of your job here that you look after your players, and that creates a tremendous loyalty - it's always been a good foundation of our club.

"We're as bemused as anyone can be as we don't quite understand why he'd want to leave a club that no one can deny is one of the most successful in British football. We've won 40 major trophies, countless cup finals, got a fantastic history, a great stadium, great training arrangements.

"We don't understand it, so I can't answer any question about 'why is he doing it?'. We can speculate, we can offer opinions - it won't matter a dickie bird, simply because the player says he's adamant he wants to leave.

"We have to deal with the next part of that, which we'll do as best we can, in relation to this request. I can't do more than what we've done and said at the moment because, in my mind, we still have the door open and who knows?"

Wayne Rooney performed a stunning U-turn on Friday by signing a five-year contract to stay at Manchester United and end a week of bombshells with yet another shock.

The England striker had looked destined to leave Old Trafford in the next transfer window after saying on Wednesday that he wanted to quit because of United's lack of clout in the transfer market.

He attributed his change of heart to manager Alex Ferguson, whom Rooney called a "genius" and said had convinced him that he belonged at United.

"I'm delighted to sign another deal at United. In the last couple of days, I've talked to the manager and the owners and they've convinced me this is where I belong," Rooney said in a statement.

"I'm signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history -- which is the reason I joined the club in the first place."

Ferguson, who spoke of his shock earlier this week at Rooney's wish to leave, had been locked in talks with chief executive David Gill to sort out what he said was in danger of becoming a 'saga'.

His bemusement turned to delight on Friday with the announcement of a deal that would keep Rooney at the club until at least June 2015..

"It's been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United. I said to the boy that the door is always open and I'm delighted Wayne has agreed to stay," Ferguson said in the statement.

"Sometimes, when you're in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.

"I'm pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for."

The news stunned the footballing world, with former United player Lou Macari telling Sky Sports News: "I thought it was April 1. Nothing has shocked me more in football ever than this week."

BRIDGE BUILDING

Despite pledging his commitment to the club, in a deal where the financial details were not revealed, Rooney may still have some bridges to build with fans who felt betrayed by his exit plans and players who may have felt let down by their team mate.

He had also publicly contradicted his manager earlier this month by saying he was not injured when Ferguson said he had an ankle injury, an embarrassment both parties will be keen to draw a line under.

"I'm sure everyone involved with the club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of," said Ferguson.

Rooney said he would win the fans over again.

"I'm sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they've read and seen," he said.

"But my position was from concern over the future. The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it's up to me through my performances to win them over again."

After a 34-goal season last term, Rooney has struggled to find his form this season with just one club goal, a penalty...

Fans will hope the removal of the burden of uncertainty over his future, which had hung over him since telling Ferguson on August 14 that he wanted away, will enable him to return to his best.

Rooney had been linked with a move across the city to neighbours Manchester City, inciting anger among United fans. Police said they had to disperse a crowd of 20-30 people who had gathered outside his home on Thursday in protest

Obasanjo Attacked at Airport !

A mild drama ensued at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Monday, as former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was attacked by a middle-aged man who pounced on him inside his car.

The incident occurred at about 9:20a.m.

The former president’s attacker, whose identity was not immediately known, had earlier before Obasanjo’s arrival attempted to enter the presidential wing of the airport, but was turned back by Air Force personnel manning the gate, especially as he could not explain his mission at the wing.

The man was not only denied entry, but was also driven away from the precincts of the wing and told never to return to the area, particularly as President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential jet was parked at the wing.

The ambush
Unknown to the Air Force personnel and some mobile policemen whose presence at the airport was due to the president’s presence in Lagos, the man had laid ambush, hiding behind the fence of the car park attached to the presidential lounge.

*Obasanjo

Former President Obasanjo’s chartered jet touched down a few minutes after 9:00a.m., and the former president, in his usual jocular manner exchanged banters with press men attached to the presidential lounge. He then hopped into his car, a Toyota Landcruiser special utility vehicle, SUV, sandwiched between two excort vehicles with his security aides, leaving behind Chief Kenny Martins who came to receive him.

The attack
As the convoy of three vehicles tried to negotiate its way into Airport Road, towards the local wing of the airport, the man emerged from nowhere. He ran towards the Jeep in the middle of the convoy, opened the door and started kicking and raining blows on the former President.

Rescue
The opening of the door of Obasanjo’s car drew the attention of both the Air Force personnel and Mobile Policemen some 100 metres away, and they quickly dragged the man out of the car and gave him the beating of his life....

When he recovered from the attack, the visibly shaken Obasanjo immediately asked his driver to drive off, while scores of security men had rounded up the attacker who, amidst beatings, screamed persistently “America is watching, …America is watching.”

The man attempted to escape, but when some of the military personnel cocked their guns to shoot, he quickly laid on the floor begging for leniency.

Aftermath
The man, who looked well fed and dressed up, was dragged to the Air Force wing of the airport, as he refused to explain his mission and motive behind the attack of the former President.

The development prompted tightening of security at the presidential wing, as every person or vehicle entering the lounge and car park were subjected to stringent security screening.

Cossy detained by Police !

Commotion Cossy as we'd like to call her because of her now legendary mammary attributes, is a personality many husbands, bachelors and young men would want to read about anytime of the day. And as a personality, Cossy has become an item many a wife would not want on their menu list or served up their tables even for breakfast.

cossy

But rather than tormenting souls with her 'huge mammary gift of nature' Cossy Orjiakor the Boobs queen has been cooling her feet at the Ilasan police station, Jakande First Gate on the Lagos Island. And for more than 34 hours she did just that behind the counters.

Problem started when a suspect was caught trying to break into her Ilasan residence. The locals in the area who knew the actress very well descended on the suspect and took to the street code of conduct by meting out the ever popular jungle justice even before Cossy could appear on the scene. She was said to have gone out for her daily business.

According to her, she called the police but was told that the police had no vehicle that could travel up the bumpy road to her house.

They prevailed on her to wait until they could get a good SUV that could manage the road.

The so-called help did not come and she had to dial 767 for help and she was advised to take the suspect to the police station by herself.

She said " I felt very uncomfortable but accepted to help as the Baale of the Ilasan at this time was also involved".

So, with the Baale and the many locals who had come to help her she headed for the Ilasan Police Staton.

Unknown to her the Divisional Police Office of the Station, a certain Mr. Ekpo had other ideas. The moment they dragged in the suspect the D.P.O. accused them of taking the laws into their own hands by meting out justice on the suspect and concluded the suspect was not caught in the act at all.

After being delayed for more than three hours, she called 112 and somehow her gesture was misunderstood by the DPO who charged her for assault.

"Immediately after this, the suspect was released and allowed to go and treat himself in some undisclosed hospital" Cossy revealed. "Thereafter, I was detained with the Baale and we have remained behind the counters for the past 32 hours", an angry Cossy confirmed to this writer on Wednesday evening

When Showtime got in touch with the DPO, Mr Ekpo of Ilasan police station, the police officer confirmed the story and agreed the sexy actress has been in their custody for sometime but debunk the allegation that he has held her and the Baale unlawfully..

According to the DPO " They had apprehended an innocent man and had beaten him thoroughly without no just course. As a police officer it is my job to investigate and I have investigated that no one had any proof that the suspect in question is a buglar".

Yet coming from Cossy, the Baale and a handful of the local it is evident that they have been held under detention for more than 32 hours. This has probably put paid to all the plans for the sultry actress to celebrate her birthday today, Ocober 16th.

In preparation for the 2011 polls, 26 registered political parties yesterday announced their resolve to contest all elective offices in Lagos on the ticket of one political party. All candidates of the coalition known as The Coalition of Lagos State Political Parties (COLASOPP) are to campaign and contest under the name, logo and emblem of the adopted political party. Although yet to settle for any party, the main aim of the coalition is to take over the administration of Lagos in 2011.

At a press conference in the Ogba area of Lagos yesterday, the chairman of the Board of Trustee of COLASOPP, Dr. Adegbola Dominic who is also chairman of the Action Party of Nigeria (APN) said the coalition would contest all elective offices from governorship to councillorship in Lagos..

Although the group and their parties remain largely unknown, Daily Sun gathered that the strength of the group is coming from key members of the Lagos business community who are believed to be disenchanted with the new tax regime in the state. They say the new order has made it even more expensive to do business in Lagos than it ever was in the eight years before Fashola’s election.

Among those believed to be gearing up to fund the push to ensure that Fashola does not return is a billionaire industrialist who has interest in automotive business. There is also another billionaire banker who is said to also have vast interest in the telecommunication (GSM) business.

The team is believed to have galvanized key members of the orgnised private sector in the state to ensure that Fashola does not return.

To further swell their ranks, the group is also waving a seemingly irresistible carrot in the direction of the Igbo community in Lagos, as the financiers of the coalition are promising the Igbo community the deputy governor slot.

The calculation, according to Daily Sun findings, is to see how the decisive Igbo votes, thought to be in the neighbourhood of 30-40 per cent of the registered voters in Lagos can be swung to the coalition and effectively kick out Fashola.

Although Dominic did not go into detail about the bigwigs behind the coalition, he said the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), as represented by Fashola had failed Lagosians and tended to concentrate his development efforts in the areas where the elite live, while leaving out the rest 70 per cent of Lagosians who are in the rural areas.

While speaking at the press conference, Dominic described the ruling ACN in Lagos as a fluke saying: “The orchestrated achievement of Governor Raji Fashola is mere media hype. We are determined and indeed ready to shock those pretenders when by the grace of God we dislodge their pretentious administration in the 2011elections. We have the means, we have the people and we have strong reasons to take over from Fashola.”

He described the much-touted achievements of the Fashola administration as a disaster because the amount of money that came to Lagos in the past 12 years since the ACN was in charge of affairs would have transformed many nations in Africa if such huge amount ever came their way.

Dominic said: “The ACN has been in government in Lagos State for the past 12 years and the so-called achievement is in fact a disastrous performance when you consider the enormous resources at its disposal from the Federation Account and the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). It is estimated that the ACN government in Lagos State has squandered N38.4 trillion in 12 years. Many African countries cannot boast of this amount of money in 20 years.”

The Lagos ACN, Dominic said, had been spending Lagos money to sponsor failed governorship candidates in other states of the federation.

Recently, a group,” the true face of Lagos” accused Governor Raji Fashola of gross financial impropriety. One would expect the governor, an eminent professionals in such circumstances, to insist and submit himself for investigations. Instead, the governor and his friends went to court to frustrate the process.”

The coalition rolled out what it called a catalogue of failure of the ruling party in Lagos. It includes: “massive unemployment, roads in deplorable condition which are impassable during raining season, schools turning out illiterates, educational institutions regularly on strike, masses living in slums, healthcare disorderly and under funded, doctors and other paramedical staff almost permanently on strike, chaotic traffic.” It further noted that “the economy of the state has deteriorated in the past 12 years.”

Dominic pointed out that the State government has concluded plans to erect tollgates on a number of roads to enrich a few elites at the expense of the masses.

When it was pointed out to Dominic that the 26 political parties in the coalition are not known to wield any political influence in Lagos, he said: “It is not the strength of the parties that matters, the important thing is that when we come out and people listen to us, we are confident that people would vote for us.”

Chairman of the coalition, Chief John Nwuche remarked: “Watch out for us. We will surprise you. We shall not capture Lagos. That is the language of the military. But we are set to win at the 2011 elections in Lagos.”

Ex-beauty queen and popular Nollywood actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima, who made headline last year after she was sentenced to five years imprisonment for manslaughter, following the death of a medical doctor, Mr. Suraj Giwa, is a changed woman.

Ibinabo Fiberesima

She has completely turned her life around, bidding farewell to alcohol, cigarettes and partying. The single mother of three is now a born again Christian and spreads the word of God at every opportunity.

Confirming her new faith to HVP on telephone, the actress-turned-preacher said she gave her life to Christ while she was serving her jail term at Kirikiri Maximum Prison.

Ibinabo, who was a former night club owner, said she took the bold step after she realised that the promises of man is fake and also given the need to build eternal peace within herself.

“I got born again when I was in prison. I discovered that the promises of man is fake. Yes, I’m spreading the word of God at every given opportunity. I visit schools in Port-Harcourt to talk to children about Christ. Each time I’m praying, I always ask God that whenever people see me, let them see the glory of God in me,” she muted.

The embattled actress allayed the fear that she would abandon her acting career for the work of God. “I will still be acting. Doing the work of God will not stop me from acting,” she said.

She advised other celebrities to learn to embrace Christ as the only way to find permanent peace in life.

Ibinabo Fiberesima was convicted of murder manslaughter and sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the Igbosere division of the Lagos Magistrate Court last year..

She was alleged to have killed a male medical doctor identified as Suraju Giwa while driving carelessly and under the influence of alcohol along Lekki/Epe Expressway in Lagos.

Ibinabo was said to have been seriously drunk while driving the vehicle ( a jeep) belonging to her erstwhile lover, Daniel Wilson, in which she was with some other girls.

Though the actress pleaded not guilty, the prosecution called five witnesses during the trial to prove its case, and all the five who, included two eye witnesses, gave detailed account of how the offence was committed, to the court.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. A.O. Isaac, thus held he was totally convinced that the actress committed the offence, having looked at the circumstances surrounding the matter as well as the account of the prosecution witnesses. He found her guilty as charged and convicted her accordingly.

Sources who spoke in confidence with NEXT revealed that over 30 South African police officers smashed down Mr Okah’s doors and gained entry into his home at about 3am South African time, with sophisticated weapons in full display as well as about six sniffing dogs, at the instance of the federal government of Nigeria.

“We have been told that the Nigerian government informed the South African police that it is imperative that Mr Okah’s home is searched yesterday because they would find arms and explosives. The federal government has been sending spurious petitions to the South African government about Mr Okah, alleging all kinds of things..

“They said he is exporting arms and explosives from South Africa into Nigeria. But when the South African police invaded his home, they found nothing. Even with their sniffing dogs, they did not find anything,” a source said to NEXT yesterday in Abuja.

Reports have it that the search at Mr Okah’s home, which lasted for about 10 hours, from 3am till about 1pm, yielded neither explosives nor arms.

Ima Niboro, the spokesman for the federal government neither responded to the phone calls nor the text messages sent to him to make enquiries about the role of the presidency in the role.

Federal government’s gripe

Although the Umaru Yar’Adua led government released Mr Okah from a 13-month long detention and granted him amnesty in 2009, unconfirmed reports state that Mr Okah’s name has been placed on the INTERPOL red alert in Nigeria, in connection with arms and drug trafficking.

Emmanuel Ojukwu, the spokesman of the Nigerian Police, has denied any knowledge of the raid. Mr Ojukwu, who told NEXT in Abuja that he is also the spokesman for the INTERPOL in Nigeria, said that he was unaware that Mr Okah’s name had been placed on red alert by the INTERPOL.

“I have no information. I am not aware of that. I speak for the Nigerian police and the INTERPOL and I am not aware of either the invasion or any red alert,” Mr Ojukwu said in a telephone interview.

Mr Okah, in response, said that he was unshaken but that he was upset that his children were frightened by the police officers who tore down their bedroom doors and barged into their rooms with rifles.

“I am not surprised by the federal government’s actions. What I am surprised at is that the South African government would allow themselves to be used by Nigerians. I am, however, not moved by whatever means the government is trying to use to intimidate me. I am constantly fighting against the oppression of my people in the Niger Delta,” Mr Okah said in a statement obtained by NEXT.

I did a doubletake when I saw a friend's Facebook status update today : "I like it on the kitchen table." Probably just a private message mistakenly posted as a status update.

Then my sister posted, "I like it on the hall floor," and after a moment of feeling vaguely icky, I knew something was up. So I Googled and, of course, found that it's the latest viral breast cancer awareness campaign taking Facebook by storm. (The "it" is actually where a woman likes to leave her purse/handbag.)

My friend Genevieve likes it on the barstool. My friend Jalade likes it in the car.

Bobos please Get your minds out of the gutter.

They're talking about their purses.

Titillating the Facebook newsfeeds today, women are posting where they like to keep their purses when they come home, but they conveniently leave out the word "purse."

Men are not supposed to know what it means. So stop reading now, men.

The trend follows the January Internet meme in which women posted the color of their bra as their Facebook status.

Both are to raise awareness of breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Month. (It's also Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but that's another story entirely.)

The question remains whether the viral campaign actually does raise awareness or just raises eyebrows.

One response to a Facebook status: "Woah is right. Overshare."

Update, 10:45 a.m.

Men: Hmph. Some of the not-so-fair sex have complained that this post is sexist as they are forbidden to read past the jump. Others have complained about the actual Internet meme: "Yeah, that's a great way to get men on board with breast cancer awareness month...alienate them."

We suggest going with the flow, men. Men can put purses places these days too.

Oh, and ladies, go take a breast exam..

I wonder who they are infecting with AIDS now !
The sordid "past" of Americans . even Nazi Mad doctor Josef Mengele would be amazed by the following Testament.
From 1946 to 1948, American public health doctors deliberately infected nearly 700 Guatemalans — prison inmates, mental patients and soldiers — with venereal diseases in what was meant as an effort to test the effectiveness of penicillin.

American tax dollars, through the National Institutes of Health, even paid for syphilis-infected prostitutes to sleep with prisoners, since Guatemalan prisons allowed such visits. When the prostitutes did not succeed in infecting the men, some prisoners had the bacteria poured onto scrapes made on their penises, faces or arms, and in some cases it was injected by spinal puncture..

If the subjects contracted the disease, they were given antibiotics.

“However, whether everyone was then cured is not clear,” said Susan M. Reverby, the professor at Wellesley College who brought the experiments to light in a research paper that prompted American health officials to investigate.

The revelations were made public on Friday, when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius apologized to the government of Guatemala and the survivors and descendants of those infected. They called the experiments “clearly unethical.”

“Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health,” the secretaries said in a statement. “We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices.”

In a twist to the revelation, the public health doctor who led the experiment, John C. Cutler, would later have an important role in the Tuskegee study in which black American men with syphilis were deliberately left untreated for decades. Late in his own life, Dr. Cutler continued to defend the Tuskegee work.

His unpublished Guatemala work was unearthed recently in the archives of the University of Pittsburgh by Professor Reverby, a medical historian who has written two books about Tuskegee.

President Álvaro Colom of Guatemala, who first learned of the experiments on Thursday in a phone call from Mrs. Clinton, called them “hair-raising” and “crimes against humanity.” His government said it would cooperate with the American investigation and do its own.

The experiments are “a dark chapter in the history of medicine,” said Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health. Modern rules for federally financed research “absolutely prohibit” infecting people without their informed consent, Dr. Collins said.

Professor Reverby presented her findings about the Guatemalan experiments at a conference in January, but nobody took notice, she said in a telephone interview Friday. In June, she sent a draft of an article she was preparing for the January 2011 issue of the Journal of Policy History to Dr. David J. Sencer, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control. He prodded the government to investigate.

In the 1940s, Professor Reverby said, the United States Public Health Service “was deeply interested in whether penicillin could be used to prevent, not just cure, early syphilis infection, whether better blood tests for the disease could be established, what dosages of penicillin actually cured infection, and to understand the process of re-infection after cures.”

It had difficulties growing syphilis in the laboratory, and its tests on rabbits and chimpanzees told it little about how penicillin worked in humans.

In 1944, it injected prison “volunteers” at the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary in Indiana with lab-grown gonorrhea, but found it hard to infect people that way.

In 1946, Dr. Cutler was asked to lead the Guatemala mission, which ended two years later, partly because of medical “gossip” about the work, Professor Reverby said, and partly because he was using so much penicillin, which was costly and in short supply.

Dr. Cutler would later join the study in Tuskegee, Ala., which had begun relatively innocuously in 1932 as an observation of how syphilis progressed in black male sharecroppers. In 1972, it was revealed that, even when early antibiotics were invented, doctors hid that fact from the men in order to keep studying them. Dr. Cutler, who died in 2003, defended the Tuskegee experiment in a 1993 documentary.

Deception was also used in Guatemala, Professor Reverby said. Dr. Thomas Parran, the former surgeon general who oversaw the start of Tuskegee, acknowledged that the Guatemala work could not be done domestically, and details were hidden from Guatemalan officials.

Professor Reverby said she found some of Dr. Cutler’s papers at the University of Pittsburgh, where he taught until 1985, while she was researching Dr. Parran.

“I’m sifting through them, and I find ‘Guatemala ... inoculation ...’ and I think ‘What the heck is this?’ And then it was ‘Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.’ My partner was with me, and I told him, ‘You aren’t going to believe this.’ ”

Fernando de la Cerda, minister counselor at the Guatemalan Embassy in Washington, said that Mrs. Clinton apologized to President Colom in her Thursday phone call. “We thank the United States for its transparency in telling us the facts,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of reparations for survivors or descendants, Mr. de la Cerda said that was still unclear.

The public response on the Web sites of Guatemalan news outlets was furious. One commenter, Cesar Duran, on the site of Prensa Libre wrote: “APOLOGIES ... please ... this is what has come to light, but what is still hidden? They should pay an indemnity to the state of Guatemala, not just apologize.”

Dr. Mark Siegler, director of the Maclean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago’s medical school, said he was stunned. “This is shocking,” Dr. Siegler said. “This is much worse than Tuskegee — at least those men were infected by natural means.”

He added: “It’s ironic — no, it’s worse than that, it’s appalling — that, at the same time as the United States was prosecuting Nazi doctors for crimes against humanity, the U.S. government was supporting research that placed human subjects at enormous risk.”

The Nuremberg trials of Nazi doctors who experimented on concentration camp inmates and prisoners led to a code of ethics, though it had no force of law. In the 1964 Helsinki Declaration, the medical associations of many countries adopted a code.

The Tuskegee scandal and the hearings into it conducted by Senator Edward M. Kennedy became the basis for the 1981 American laws governing research on human subjects, Dr. Siegler said.

It was preceded by other domestic scandals. From 1963 to 1966, researchers at the Willowbrook State School on Staten Island infected retarded children with hepatitis to test gamma globulin against it. And in 1963, elderly patients at the Brooklyn Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital were injected with live cancer cells to see if they caused tumors.

Summary:

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, andthere will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee thisThursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of themedia companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China andIran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor willbe completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

Stop the Internet Blacklist

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition
DemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

When it really matters to them, Congressmembers can come together -- with a panache and wry wit you didn't know they had. As banned books week gets underway, and President Obama admonishes oppressive regimes for their censorship of the Internet, a group of powerful Senators --Republicans and Democrats alike -- have signed onto a bill that wouldvastly expand the government's power to censor the Internet.

The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act(COICA) was introduced just one week ago, but it's greased and ready tomove, with a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday. If people don't speak out, US citizens could soon find themselvesjoining Iranians and Chinese in being blocked from accessing broadchunks of the public Internet...

Help us stop this bill in its tracks! Click here to sign our petition.

COICA creates two blacklists of Internet domain names. Courts could addsites to the first list; the Attorney General would have control overthe second. Internet service providers and others (everyone from Comcastto PayPal to Google AdSense) would be required to block any domains onthe first list. They would also receive immunity (and presumably thegood favor of the government) if they block domains on the second list.

The lists are for sites "dedicated to infringing activity," but that'sdefined very broadly -- any domain name where counterfeit goods orcopyrighted material are "central to the activity of the Internet site"could be blocked.

One example of what this means in practice: sites like YouTube could becensored in the US. Copyright holders like Viacom often arguecopyrighted material is central to the activity of YouTube, but undercurrent US law, YouTube is perfectly legal as long as they take downcopyrighted material when they're informed about it -- which is whyViacom lost to YouTube in court.

But if COICA passes, Viacom wouldn't even need to prove YouTube is doinganything illegal to get it shut down -- as long as they can persuadethe courts that enough other people are using it for copyright infringement, the whole site could be censored.

Perhaps even more disturbing: Even if Viacom couldn't get a court tocompel censorship of a YouTube or a similar site, the DOJ could put iton the second blacklist and encourage ISPs to block it even without acourt order. (ISPs have ample reason to abide the will of the powerfulDOJ, even if the law doesn't formally require them to do so.)

COICA's passage would be a tremendous blow to free speech on the Internet -- and likely a first step towards much broader onlinecensorship. Please help us fight back: The first step is signing our petition. We'll give you the tools to share it with your friends and call your Senator.

An official of the dreaded Lagos State Traffic Management Agency was forced to act in a tragic drama on Thursday. The setting of the drama is the Third Mainland Bridge while the playwright is an expatriate whose appearance suggested he was an Asian. Photo:Recent Unfortunate lastma official battered by Navy .

At the Obalende end of the bridge, some LASTMA officials were stopping and passing some vehicles. That was how the one in question waved the Asian – some people actually believed he was a Chinese – to stop. But as soon as the chap stopped, he produced a long knife from his car and challenged the traffic officer to move closer to him.

Perhaps because the traffic guy did not wear a knife-proof - or the kind of charm that Yorubas call okigbe – he decided to, borrowing a statement from Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman, hold a rapid dialogue with his legs. But as if it was a scene from a Chinese or an Indian film, the knife-wielding expatriate began to chase him, while he continued to run for dear life. What happened after? Honestly, one can’t say yet.

Those in various leadership positions in the country are the most corrupt in the world, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has said. Delivering a paper on credible leadership at a public lecture organised by the ECKANKAR yesterday, Jega said: “There is perhaps no other country in the world where power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely as in Nigeria. Our consistent or persistent ranking on the global corruption index testifies to this.”
He also said: “If the truth is to be told, with very few exceptions, our crop of leaders have essentially been self-serving rulers, some even despots and not leaders in the true sense of the word.
“They have generally lacked vision, focus and selflessness and even enlightened self-interest. Many in leadership positions are unimaginably corrupt, they are greedy, they are vindictive, they are reckless and in many fundamental respects, senseless. Virtually whoever has access to power attempts to abuse it, ”

Jega said there is absence of transparency in the manner which leaders govern the country..

“Many Nigerian public officials, whether elected or appointed, have tended to exude not only power, but also corruption, with impunity. This is manifest in the way they walk, talk, dress and generally conduct themselves.”

He tasked Nigerians on the need to ease corrupt leaders out of the system to evolve credible leadership for development of the country.

He said: “All of our country’s ills, trials and tribulations, both politically and socio-economically, can be squarely attributed to lack of transparency and accountability and the corruption that these have engendered.”

But reacting to Jega’s presentation, Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih, said the poor leadership in the country is a reflection of bad citizenry.

According to her, “there is no leader in Nigeria today that is not under pressure to steal to satisfy greedy relatives and friends. How can we have credible leaders without credible citizenry? The only way we can have credible leaders is to have credible followers who will not collect money to vote for bad leaders.”

Jega disagreed with. the minister’s position saying, “to me the challenge of leadership is to do the right thing even if it is unpopular. I cannot see the basis for a leader to steal money to satisfy the followers. It is not right to succumb to such pressure. You may become unpopular, you may not be elected again, but you must ensure that the right things are done.”

He said there is need for faith- based organisations to remain neutral on political issues and to sustain inter-faith dialogue in the society.

Hi Folks,

This is surely going to make you laugh, just read to the end! Just for fun; don't attach strings please.

Your mother has a child, and your father has a child. This child is not your brother and is not your sister. Who is he?"

Once upon a time, when Baba (Obasanjo) was in office as the president, he got an invitation from the Queen to come for a visit to England. After all the banquets and carriage rides and what not, Baba finally got the quiet moment he had craved all day in order to have a one on one chat with her majesty. After the usual small talk, Baba quickly popped the question. He asked her what the secret to her success was. You know Nigerians, we think everything is a secret…the President’s health status is a secret, his whereabouts is a secret, reports of the various panels of enquiry set up by govt to investigate the causes of different crises around the country are kept secret, we even have secret registries in every government agency in d country. Maybe we are a secretive people, we love secrets.

Anyway, back to our story. So Baba asked for the SECRET
to the Queens’s success and she told him that she relies on her people a lot and therefore she makes certain that only the intelligent get to positions of authority.

She decided to show him exactly what she meant and so she phoned Tony Blair. "Now listen carefully, Mr. Obasanjo. I'm going to ask Mr. Blair a question to determine his intelligence.”

Queen: "Hello Mr. Blair, I have a question for you: your mother has a child, and your father has a child. This child is not your brother and is not your sister. Who is he?"

Tony Blair replied instantly, "It's ME Your Majesty!"

Queen: "Correct! Thank you and goodbye"

"You see Mr. Obasanjo?" said the Queen.

"Yes”, he replied “and thanks a lot, I'll definitely be using that!"

Once back in Nigeria, he decided that he had doubts about Mantu’s level of intelligence and he decided to test him. He arranged a meeting with him and asked him:

"Mantu, I have a question for you; your mother and father have a child. The child is not your brother and is not your sister, who is he?."

Mantu thinks...... and thinks………and thinks, and finally says, "Em, Mr. President, you must give me more time to think about it."

And Mr. Obasanjo gave him 2 weeks to come up with an answer. That afternoon, Mantu called a meeting of all his aides, advisers and assistants to discuss the question, but NOBODY knew the answer. So he decided to take it to the floor of the Senate. After a heated debate the Senate President thought it wise to clear out the gallery and go into a closed session as he believed the revelations that might result could be damaging to the family and reputation of the distinguished Senator Mantu.

After about two hours of deliberations, the house decided to set up an ad hoc committee to look into the matter and report back to it in ten days. The committee was given the following terms of reference:

1. To come up with a complete family tree of the entire Mantu clan
2. To pay a courtesy call to the traditional ruler of Mantu’s village and the State Governor
3. To interview all living relatives of Senator Mantu
4. To determine if Sen. Mantu’s dad had any extramarital affairs
5. To determine the DNA composition of Sen. Mantu (in Germany of course or Saudi)

On completion of its assignment, the committee was to submit its report to the Senate which would then pass it on to the Senate committee on special duties.
This committee would then review the report of the ad hoc committee and come up with a draft “white paper” (whatever that means). This draft “white paper” would then be brought back to the Senate and on approval would be passed on to the President through Senator Mantu.

The Ad-hoc committee then submitted its budget which, of course, was kept SECRET, but included funds for;

a) The immediate purchase of Land Cruiser jeeps for each of the 12 members of the committee. The jeeps would be used to travel to Mantu’s village because, as you know, Nigerian roads are bad and Mantu’s village is remote.
b) Air tickets (first class of course) and hotel accommodation in Jos for committee members and their numerous aides. They’d stay at the Hill-station hotel and drive to Mantu’s village in the morning.
c) Air tickets (again first class) to Germany and back, and hotel accommodation (five star) for everybody.
d) Estacodes and hazard allowances
e) Logistics
f) Miscellaneous

Even though the budget was kept secret, you can easily come up with the figure by taking the actual estimate of the above list and multiply by ten. You’ll only run into problems when you get to the final two items (logistics & miscellaneous) , as these are usually added to cover for all the people that need to be “settled” in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Therefore the figures have the tendency of varying widely and so it can’t really be predicted.

Anyway, the money was released and the committee started its assignment in earnest. They finished within the time frame that was stipulated in their terms of reference and they prepared a voluminous report which was to be presented at the senate at plenary. But on the d-day when the chairman of the committee was about to make the presentation, a distinguished senator from the Southern part of the country raised a “point of order”. He argued that the committee was illegal because its composition was lopsided in favor of a certain region in the country. He pointed out that of the 12 members; seven were from the North and only five from the South. Not to be outdone, another senator, this time from the North, raised a “point of order” on the “point of order” that was raised by the senator from the South. He argued that since the committee’s assignment was primarily to investigate the lineage of Senator Mantu (who was from the North), they needed
senators who knew the terrain, who understood the culture of the people and their language.

More points of order followed and after a while the Senate President decided to put a stop to it by subjecting it to a voice vote.

And thus he announced, “All those in favor of the committee being considered legal and thus go ahead to present its report say “AYE””.
And the house responded accordingly.

And then he asked again, “All those not in favor of the committee being considered legal and thus should not go ahead to present its report say “NAY””. And the house responded accordingly.

Unfortunately for Mantu, the “NAYs had it” and thus the report was never presented. Now Mantu had a really big problem, because the President was waiting for an answer and he had run out of time. So in one last effort, he decided to phone his very good friend Jerry Rawlings who had always sounded intelligent to Mantu and thus might have the answer to this really difficult question.
"Jerry, your mother and father have a child. The child is not your brother and is not your sister, who is he?."

Jerry answered immediately. "Hey, Mantu, It's me of course, you dumb Nigerian!"
Mantu couldn’t believe his luck and so he rushed to Aso Rock Villa, his motorcade of five cars moving at top speed with sirens blaring. Ordinary Nigerians going about their normal businesses scampered out of the way. When they finally arrived their destination, Mantu literarily ran all the way to the President's office.

"Mr. President, Mr. President”, he called out, breathing heavily. “I know who he is.”
Obasanjo: “Good, so tell me”
Mantu: “It’s Jerry Rawlings Sir! In fact, when he revealed the SECRET to me, I started to see the resemblance between us"

Obasanjo: "Jerry Rawlings ko, Jerry Gana ni. You are such a stupid senator. Olodo rakpata! I'll make sure you don’t return to office after this term. Stupid man, the correct answer is TONY BLAIR!"

And that’s how Mantu never returned to the Senate even though he supported the President’s third term agenda.

Man removes own Testes with broken bottle !

What is the worth of a mans scrotum? This is the question that Mr. Toyin Ibitoye has been battling with. After losing all his investments in a business transaction, he attempted suicide by piercing his own scrotum. While the police prepare to charge him to court, his medical doctor describes it is as a psychiatrist case. AKINWALE ABORISADE writes

Ibitoye on his sick bed. Inset: Stone battered head.

For Dauda Abimbola, a night guard at Oke-Offa area of Ibadan, Oyo State, every night comes with a peculiar horror.

But the horror that struck in the wee hours of Sunday, August 5, 2010 was such that kept him brooding all day long. This is because of the absurd manner in which it came.

It was night as usual in the area. At 12:30 a.m. the rustic city had gone to sleep. Baba Isale area of Oke-Offa was calm and still, with no humans on the street but for the guard on patrol. Only the intermittent chirping of birds and crickets intruded the tranquillity of the night-time. Suddenly, a long, painful groan rent the air. Abimbola cautiously walked down to the direction of the noise. A huge figure (a man) was lying helplessly on the floor, writhing in pain in the pool of his blood.

Could it have been a gunshot or a knife stab? The stranger was soaked from the buttocks down to his feet. Toyin Ibitoye was obviously not calling for help; rather, he was only groaning as a result of the excruciating pain.

Abimbola made a distress call to the police. Soon after, a patrol team came to convey the agonising young man to a hospital in the neighbourhood. There, the doctor confirmed that the young man was actually on a suicide mission. He had inflicted some injuries on himself, using every object that came his way.

Ibitoye said, "I attempted to take my own life by throwing up huge stones that landed on my head." As each stone landed on his clean shaven head, it left a deep sore on it. But not done with that, Ibitoye broke a bottle, stripped himself naked and pierced his scrotum with it. He forcefully removed the two testes in a manner that caused him much agony that made him to cry and quiver.

Police investigation however revealed that this is not the first time Ibitoye would be making an attempt to take his own life.

Weary and utterly disappointed as a result of a business deal turned sour while living in Lagos, the embattled man was said to have made several attempts on his own life. He had lost his life savings, with barely nothing left. He also lost his customers monies in the failed oil business.

To him, all hope was lost. And the only way out, he opined, was to end it all by committing suicide. He had, ever since, been trying to kill himself; but it had been unsuccessful. Worried by Ibitoyes dangerous behaviour, his parents relocated him to their base in Ibadan so that he could be under their close watch. But, the huge burden in his heart outweighed what parental love could cure. He continued to look for a way out.

The last attempt he made in a desperate quest for death was in the early hours of Sunday when everybody was fast asleep and no one could interrupt him. Again, he did not succeed. Rather than lose his life, he only lost his testes. He presently nurses a festering sore between his legs on the hospital bed. He said, "After removing my testes, I threw them away somewhere at Ode-Aje (area of Ibadan)." When SUNDAY PUNCH visited Bembow Hospital, Ibadan, where he was receiving treatment, Ibitoye was writhing in pain, with swollen scrotum. He painfully recalled the desperate action he took in an attempt to kill himself in order to be free from lifes challenges, saying, "I pierced my scrotum with broken bottle and forcefully removed my testes."

Four hours after committing the dastardly act, Ibitoye was wheeled into the theatre at Bembow Hospital. He underwent a four-hour surgical operation, and though he came out alive, he was still in a depressed mood. His grief was not just as a result of the pain he went through, but especially because of his failed efforts to end his own life.

Now, he lies on the hospital bed almost half-minded. His words are incoherent: This minute, he will reflect on his ordeal; the next, he will bring up a topic that is totally unrelated to what he said earlier, especially when attempting to answer questions posed to him.

While responding to questions from our correspondent, he said he attempted suicide but he did not explain what led him to it. He said, "I jumped into the well, but they brought me out. I did many things but death would not come. It was painful but they treated me and the pain has reduced."

His father, a native of Ajase-Ipo, Kwara State, told the police that Ibitoye had a failed deal with some of his business partners in Lagos. According to the old man (name not given), his sons capital (amount not mentioned) and his customers money were involved in the business.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Ms. Olabisi Okuwobi, said the mans action was criminal and the act was typical of a man who is incapable of facing the challenges of life.

The Divisional Crime Officer 1, Agugu Police Station, Ibadan, Mr. Ayoola Olawole, who noted that the man had the tendency to attempt to take his own life again after recuperating, said the suspect would be charged to court. He explained that there was no basis for anybody to make an attempt on his own life or that of others, irrespective of the circumstances; as such actions are against the law.

The Medical Director, Bembow Hospital, Dr. Abimbola Kuteyi, who explained the procedure carried out on Ibitoye said, "We did surgery on the two sides of the scrotum, though he pierced himself on just one (right) side. He caused harm to the sperm duct. In medical term, we carried out bilateral orchiectomy repair of sperm duct."

According to Kuteyi, Ibitoye can still have sex but can no longer make babies. If the session was not carried out on him, the doctor said, he might bleed to death. He explained that the patient suffered secondary inflammation of the scrotum because of the unsterilised broken bottle he used to pierce it.

The doctor, who said that not less than 20 per cent of the world population had one psychiatric problem or the other, said Ibitoye obviously had psychiatric problem. Kuteyi said, "In my diagnosis, I indicated that there was a stressor that gingered the psychiatric action in him. The patient still behaves irrationally and cannot easily identify people now.

"What happened in his case was as a result of depression. He suffered what we call loss of mood and self respect. He is fed up with the environment, so he wants to commit suicide. This is, however, treatable with anti-depressant."

Will it then be right to charge Ibitoye to court, being a mentally unbalanced and traumatised individual? The doctor said no; while the law enforcement agents have a different perception.
