For faking the death of her former husband, Mr. Bayo Akinsete, has divorced his wife, Kehinde. Akinsete, 48, who resides at Odongunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State, had dragged Kehinde to an Ikorodu Customary Court, seeking the dissolution of the 10-year-old marriage.

 advertisement

He had told the court that Kehinde informed him that her former husband, whom she claimed she divorced had died before Akinsete fell in love with her.
Akinsete said that the union was blessed with a son, Joshua, adding that he was surprised when Kehinde, who had gone on a pilgrimage to a mountain within the country, sometime in 2008, sent a text message to him that she would be going to her former husband.
Akinsete said, "One day when she went to pilgrimage, she sent a text to me that she was going back to her former husband. When I received the message, I was so amazed that I had read the text many times to be sure of what I was reading. I was totally at lost because this was the same woman who told me that her former divorced husband had died long ago. The woman went away with our son, Joshua.
"She also was in the habit of changing schools for Joshua without good reason and this could adversely affect his education. I am no more interested in the marriage."
Akinsete requested that Joshua should be in Kehinde's custody for proper care as he is a man and had not remarried...
However, Kehinde, 40, a midwife, said she only changed Joshua's school once when she observed that the school's standard was low.
She denied faking her former husband's death, saying that her former spouse had gone to a war and did not return on time. Kehinde said that she decided to remarry.
She said, "Akinsete and I started living together happily. We were blessed with a son. But one day, I got a revelation in my church that I should re-examine myself. I was disturbed when the revelation persisted. I discussed it with Akinsete and told him that we could no longer live as couple as my conscience was pricking me about the revelation.
"We even afterwards stopped love making even though we were still sleeping on the same bed. When the fear of the revelation became unbearable, I moved out of the matrimonial home and sent a text message to Akinsete that I had returned to my former husband."
The Acting President of the court, Mr. Nosiru Isiaka, granted the dissolution of the marriage and ordered Akinsete to always provide through the court, before 5th of every month N2,500 as alimony for Joshua's upkeep. This amount, he explained, excluded educational and medical bills. He also warned parties to keep the peace.

Ladies PLEASE your Lives are literally in your HANDS ! USE Them, BREAST CANCER IS NOT A RESPECTER OF PERSONS !

The Comrade Governor of Edo State, Mr. Adams Oshiomole has reportedly lost his wife of many years, Mrs. Clara Oshiomole to breast Cancer. the woman who was last seen in public
some months back, died of the disease according to a source.

.Mrs. Clara Oshiomole, the wife of GovernorAdams Oshiomhole of Edo State has passed on. Vanguard uncovered that the deceased died after a battle with breast cancer.

Further inquest divulged that she died this morning, in Abuja with only about some days to her daughter’s wedding.

The 54 year old Edo First Lady had abstained from public functions because she was receiving treatment overseas and only returned to Nigeria some days ago for the daughter’s wedding slated for 19th of December .

Sadly as Liz Edwards below there are rumours of separation with the Comrade Governor before her passing.May her Soul Rest in Peace .

Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former presidential candidate, succumbs to cancer at 61

Elizabeth Edwards, who as the wife of former Sen. John Edwards gave America an intimate look at a candidate's marriage by sharing his quest for the 2008 presidential nomination as she struggled with incurable cancer and, secretly, with his infidelity, died Tuesday. She was 61.

Her family confirmed the death, saying Mrs. Edwards was surrounded by relatives when she died at her Chapel Hill, N.C., home. A family friend said John Edwards was present. Two family friends said Monday that Mrs. Edwards' cancer had spread to her liver and that doctors had advised against further medical treatment.

She posted a Facebook message to friends the same day, saying, "I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces — my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope."

"The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that," she added.

Mrs. Edwards spent much of her life as a little-known lawyer and mother. That changed when her husband became a U.S. senator, presidential candidate and Democratic nominee for vice president, propelling her into the spotlight as a smart, plain-spoken wife and key adviser to her husband.

She later became a figure of sympathy as she battled breast cancer and dealt with her husband's infidelity. Her public image shifted again in recent years: the scorned woman whose husband fathered a child with another woman.

She and John Edwards separated early this year but remained close.

Ibori’s wife gets five-year jail term

iboriwife.jpgThe wife of the former Governor of Delta State, Theresa Ibori, has been sentenced to jail for five years by a London jury after she was found guilty on a two count-charge of money laundering.

Found guilty with Mr Ibori’s attorney, Bhadresh Gohil, who was on trial with Theresa. Mr Gohil was found guilty on a similar charge and was remanded in police custody.

He will be sentenced after the conclusion of another trial involving the laundering of proceeds of V-Mobile shares by James Ibori, Henry Imashekka, David Edevbie and former Akwa Ibom governor, Victor Attah. The trial will commence next Monday.

The recent anti-corruption campaign on the Ibori’s has also seen the conviction of the former governor’s sister Christine Ibori-Ibie; and mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo-Onuigbo in a previous trial for helping him move an estimated £70 million worth of looted funds through several London banks. The two women are currently serving five-year jail terms each in a London prison.

Mr Ibori is currently detained in the United Arab Emirates where the Dubai court of First Instance ruled in October that he should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face charges on corruption, official theft and money laundering saying he has “a case to answer in the UK.” But he is appealing the judgement at the Emirate’s Supreme Court where he is reported to have sought political asylum.

Mr Ibori was arrested in the Emirate by the International Police (INTERPOL) in May after he was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly mismanaging N528 million shares of Delta State in Oceanic Bank a month before his arrest in the UAE after evading arrest in Nigeria. A warrant of arrest was also issued on him by the UK Metropolitan Police for money laundering......

PHOTO: The Audus in Good Tmes

Aisha, the estranged wife of former governor of Kogi State, Abubabakar Audu has lost her bid to retain a property at 12301 Glen Road, Potomac, Maryland, United States of America.

Aisha was the first lady of Kogi State when Audu was the governor.

A Circuit Court in Montgomery County, Mary-land, United States held that Gold Window, LLC, a company in which Audu is believed to have interest was the rightful owner of the property in dispute.

A copy of the judgment which was delivered on 18th November, 2010 was obtained by our correspondent.

The court held thus, "The plaintiff (Gold Window, LLC) is the lawful title owner of the real property located at 12301 Glen Road, Potomac, Maryland 20854 and is entitled to immediate possession of said property."

The court further held that Aisha Audu (the defendant) was wrongfully in possession of the property.

"The defendant, and any of her guests, agents or anyone else acting in her behest, shall not remove, damage, alter, destroy or diminish any furnishings, appliances, rugs, vehicles, or other property from the home or grounds of the aforementioned real property," the court further ordered.

Audu, and his wife, Aisha, are currently entangled in a legal tussle in United States over allegations of domestic violence.

Aisha had approached the court for a final protective order and also filed a divorce suit.

V. ABUBAKAR CASE STUDY: USING OFFSHORE COMPANIES

TO BRING SUSPECT FUNDS INTO THE UNITED STATES

Jennifer Douglas Abubakar, a U.S. citizen, is the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar, the

former Vice President of Nigeria and a former candidate for the Presidency of Nigeria. This case

history examines how, from 2000 to 2008, Ms. Douglas helped her husband bring over $40

million in suspect funds into the United States, including at least $1.7 million in bribe payments

from Siemens AG, a German corporation, and over $38 million from little known offshore

corporations, primarily LetsGo Ltd. Inc., Guernsey Trust Company Nigeria Ltd., and Sima

Holding Ltd.

Over half of the suspect funds, nearly $25 million, were wire transferred by the offshore

corporations into U.S. bank accounts opened by Ms. Douglas. For most of the time period

examined, the U.S. banks with those accounts were unaware of Ms. Douglas’ PEP status, and

allowed multiple large wire transfers into her accounts from the offshore corporations. As, over

time, each of the banks began to question the wire transfers into her accounts, Ms. Douglas

indicated that all of the funds came from her husband and professed little familiarity with the

offshore corporations actually sending her money.

Bank records indicate that Ms. Douglas used most of the funds placed into her accounts

to support a lavish lifestyle in the United States, paying credit card bills and household expenses

in the range of $10,000 to $90,000 per month, including substantial legal and accounting bills.

She also transferred funds to accounts she opened for the Gede Foundation, a nonprofit

corporation she established in 2002, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), a university

that Mr. Abubakar founded in 2003, and whose name reflects its association with American

University in the United States.

An additional $14 million of the suspect funds were wire transferred by two of the

offshore corporations, LetsGo and the Guernsey Trust Company, to American University to pay

for consulting fees related to AUN. American University officials told the Subcommittee that

they understood the funds came from Mr. Abubakar and never inquired why the wire transfers

were sent by unfamiliar offshore corporations. At least another $2.1 million was wire transferred

by the Guernsey Trust Corporation to accounts controlled by Edward Weidenfeld, a U.S. lawyer

who provided legal services to Ms. Douglas, Mr. Abubakar, and AUN. Mr. Weidenfeld

explained that the funds paid for the Abubakars’ legal expenses and an account set up for AUN,

and that he had assumed the funds came from Mr. Abubakar.

Over the years, questions have been raised about the source of Mr. Abubakar’s wealth.

He spent twenty years in the Nigerian Customs Service, and then worked in the private sector for

ten years, before serving as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. While Vice President,

Mr. Abubakar was the subject of corruption allegations relating to the Nigerian Petroleum

Technology Development Fund. In December 2008, the U.S. Securities and Exchange

Commission alleged in a formal complaint against Siemens AG, a German company, that,

among other actions, in 2001 and 2002, Siemens wire transferred $2.8 million in bribe payments..

to a U.S. bank account belonging to Ms. Douglas as part of a scheme to bribe Nigerian officials.

In response to this and other legal actions, Siemens admitted to engaging in widespread bribery the committee that he surmised the Gede Foundation account was closed due to its

association with Ms. Douglas.1172

Chevy Chase told the Subcommittee that it tendered its resignation from the JDA Family

Trust in January 2006, and intended to close the account soon after, but Mr. Weidenfeld had

informed Chevy Chase that he was having a difficult time finding a replacement trustee.1173

Mr. Weidenfeld told the Subcommittee that he contacted the following institutions which

declined to take the trust: PNC Bank, Ashbridge Investments, J.P. Morgan Private Bank,

Samson Capital in New York, Neville Rody and Shaw, and Papamarkou Asset Management in

New York City, before finding a company that would take the trust.1174 An internal Chevy Chase

email noted: “At least five foreign financial institutions with no presence in the United States

have refused to take this business.”1175 Chevy Chase told the Subcommittee: “Under principles

of trust law, Chevy Chase Trust had a duty to continue as the corporate trustee until a

replacement trustee was found or Jennifer Douglas Abubakar and Francis Iwenjiora exercised

their powers under the trust to remove Chevy Chase Trust.”1176

$500,000 Wire Transfer to Faibros Investments. More than a year and a half after

Chevy Chase tendered its resignation from the JDA Family Trust and while the search for a new

trustee continued, a JDA Family Trust request for a $500,000 wire transfer raised new concerns

at the bank. In September 2007, the JDA Family Trust requested a wire transfer of $500,000 to

Faibros Investments FZ-LLC in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates.1177 In a September 17,

2007 letter to Ms. Douglas’ legal counsel, the Chevy Chase Trust Company declined to complete

the wire transfer. The Trust Company wrote:

“[O]ur primary business is the investment management of individual’s wealth. We do have

trust powers and serve as a fiduciary primarily for our clients for whom we manage their

investments. In a few limited circumstances we serve as directed trustee where another

entity, well known to us, is the investment manager.”1178

1172 11/13/09 letter from Mr. Weidenfeld’s legal counsel, London & Mead, to the Subcommittee, PSIAbubakar_&_

Weidenfeld-01-0030

1173 9/5/08 letter from Chevy Chase’s legal counsel to the Subcommittee, PSI-Chevy_Chase-06-0001-07, at 05.

Mr. Weidenfeld’s legal counsel also told the Subcommittee: “With the Citibank account closing, a replacement

facility was urgently required. At approximately the same time, Chevy Chase Bank gave notice it would no longer

serve as trustee for the Jennifer Douglas Family Trust (‘the JDA trust’), and the money manager for the JDA trust

announced their intention to resign. The Abubakars requested that Mr. Weidenfeld find a new money manager, as

well as a new trustee to replace Chevy Chase.” 11/13/09 letter from Mr. Weidenfeld’s legal counsel, London &

Mead, to the Subcommittee, PSI-Abubakar_&_Weidenfeld-01-0023.

Those in various leadership positions in the country are the most corrupt in the world, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has said. Delivering a paper on credible leadership at a public lecture organised by the ECKANKAR yesterday, Jega said: “There is perhaps no other country in the world where power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely as in Nigeria. Our consistent or persistent ranking on the global corruption index testifies to this.”
He also said: “If the truth is to be told, with very few exceptions, our crop of leaders have essentially been self-serving rulers, some even despots and not leaders in the true sense of the word.
“They have generally lacked vision, focus and selflessness and even enlightened self-interest. Many in leadership positions are unimaginably corrupt, they are greedy, they are vindictive, they are reckless and in many fundamental respects, senseless. Virtually whoever has access to power attempts to abuse it, ”

Jega said there is absence of transparency in the manner which leaders govern the country..

“Many Nigerian public officials, whether elected or appointed, have tended to exude not only power, but also corruption, with impunity. This is manifest in the way they walk, talk, dress and generally conduct themselves.”

He tasked Nigerians on the need to ease corrupt leaders out of the system to evolve credible leadership for development of the country.

He said: “All of our country’s ills, trials and tribulations, both politically and socio-economically, can be squarely attributed to lack of transparency and accountability and the corruption that these have engendered.”

But reacting to Jega’s presentation, Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih, said the poor leadership in the country is a reflection of bad citizenry.

According to her, “there is no leader in Nigeria today that is not under pressure to steal to satisfy greedy relatives and friends. How can we have credible leaders without credible citizenry? The only way we can have credible leaders is to have credible followers who will not collect money to vote for bad leaders.”

Jega disagreed with. the minister’s position saying, “to me the challenge of leadership is to do the right thing even if it is unpopular. I cannot see the basis for a leader to steal money to satisfy the followers. It is not right to succumb to such pressure. You may become unpopular, you may not be elected again, but you must ensure that the right things are done.”

He said there is need for faith- based organisations to remain neutral on political issues and to sustain inter-faith dialogue in the society.

The Police in Lagos have arrested a 28-year-old housewife, Bola Oyekoya, for aborting her rival's pregnancy without her consent.

Bola was said to have taken 18-year-old Serifat Yinusa to an auxiliary nurse, Bukky Oduntan, who drugged the Cocacola drink given to Yinusa and while she was soundly asleep, the nurse injected the girl to kill the baby inside her and forced her to go into premature labour.

PUNCH METRO gathered that Bola and her husband, Isiaka, had been married for two years without any child of their own. It was gathered that after much pressure from the wife, Isiaka owned up to Serifat's pregnancy. The wife subsequently insisted that there must be a medical test to determine whether the girl got pregnant for her husband.

According to police investigation report, it was while the trio went for the medical test that the pregnancy was aborted by the nurse..

But Bola insisted that Yinusa and her husband were the ones that begged her to help abort the pregnancy. "She said she was not ready. My husband was also scared of what her parent would do. I reluctantly helped her and took her to my area sister (Oduntan), who gave her injection to remove the pregnancy. After the abortion, she now told us that it was another person that she got pregnant for," she said.

Isiaka however said that her wife and the nurse made him understand that what they were giving to Yinusa was a mere malaria injection to protect her and the baby.

"When my wife heard about the girl's pregnacy, she said she did not believe that I was the owner of the pregnancy and after much argument, I agreed to bring her so that they can test her and see if the pregnancy belonged to me. I never knew that they wanted to remove it. But later in the day she (Yinusa) said she had the pregnancy for another man, and that she planned to marry that man," he narrated.

Odutan who claimed ignorance of the whole drama, said she was under the impression that the girl was Bola's younger sister. "She told me that her husband got her younger sister pregnant and something must be done fast. I gave her Gentamycin injection with B-complex. The injection will kill the baby and also forced her to deliver the dead baby prematurely.

However, Yinusa said that she claimed the pregnancy was for another man because she feared that the trio might kill her. He said his wife was saying he was not the owner of the pregnancy. They then took me to that woman to be sure that Isiaka was the one that owned the pregnancy. Since I knew I was telling the truth, I followed them.

"It was while we were there that the wife was saying I was her sister and they wanted to remove the pregnancy. I told the nurse that I was not her sister and I don't want to abort my pregnancy. The nurse told me to calm down and gave me a bottle of Coke to drink; that was the last thing I remembered. When I woke up I knew that they had done something to me because I was feeling the pain of the injection.

"When it was time to go Isiaka took me to his house and refused my request that he shoult take me to my house. That was when I lied that the pregnancy belonged to another man. They became happy and took me back to the woman who gave me injection. From there we went to my house.

"In the night, I went into a painful labour and delivered a dead baby, but the placenta did not come out. That was why my parents went to the police," she said.

Lagos State police command spokesman, Mr. FrankMba, who described the act as an illicit abortion masterminded by a jealous wife and crudely executed by a quack nurse, said that the police would prosecute all parties involved.

"In Nigeria, abortion is an offence and those who did this one with the circumstance involved will be made to face the full wrath of the law," he said.

Enugu herbalist takes 48th wife

An Enugu based herbalist and self-styled King Solomon of Africa, Dr OnuUwa Simon Odo, made history recently when he performed the traditional wedding rites to a 24-year-old girl to bring the total of his wives to 48.
The 64-year-old herbalist, who married his first wife at the age of 15 , by the recent marriage, now ranks among the world’s most polygamous men.

OnuUwa wedded Ndidi, a secondary school leaver at a flamboyant traditional marriage ceremony unprecedented in the annals of Ajii, a hinterland community in the Igbo Eze North Local Government Area, Enugu State.
The herbalist who said he specialized in healing the sick, especially those whose ailment had defied orthodox therapy; preparation of good luck and success charms, claimed to have received his power from Eze-Nwayi at an early age.

Although he told Daily Sun that his latest wife, Ndidi would be his last, a family source said it is doubtful if he could resist the urge to marry more wives, insisting that “he will marry again.”
OnuUwa, who said he was a baptized and confirmed Catholic, as well as a Mass server, denied any involvement in ritual sacrifices or shedding of human blood..
“I will go to heaven because I am a good man,” he boasted, adding that if he were bad, the gods would have punished him through his children or wives, pointing out that he has never recorded death of a child or wife.

It is just very wonderful how peaceful the family is, given its large population. Explaining the secrete behind the unprecedented harmony in his family, he attributed it to the strict adherence of members of his household to the written rules guiding his family, which he calls the “four commandments” that forbids them to steal, be jealous, fight or kill.

There is no barren woman in his household, but he refused to disclose the number of children he has.
“How can I tell you the number of children I have. You don’t count children, because they are gifts from God. Before you leave, one of my wives may give birth, would you not call me a liar?” the herbalist queried jokingly.
“My ambition to establish a village with my family has been realized. We are now more than a village,” he told Daily Sun. Hear him:

I once served mass
I started my herbal business in 1962 when I was 15 years. I was attending the Catholic Church. I was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church and I even served the mass. Because I was poisoned by my enemies I had to leave. I was born in 1947, the year locusts appeared in the sky.
My kind of herbal practice
Since I started the herbal practice in1962, I have been kind to my patients and I used my gift to help very many persons. If you give me $100 million to kill a human being, I will not take, I no dey “share” blood. I am a man and I cannot “share” blood because, God created the people.

I want to emulate King Solomon
No, it is not 47 wives, but 48. Yes, I married a very young secondary school leaver and did the traditional marriage recently. Her name is Ndidi and I love her too much I decided to marry the 48th wife because, it is what I desire to do. To marry many wives is ordained by God. For me, I want to marry like King Solomon in the Bible. God is helping me. I am healthy. I have the money and can marry as many wives as I like, since I am sexually active. Even in the next 30 years, I will still be sexually active. I am a herbalist and I know the power of plants and roots in our body.

Ndidi will be my last wife
Ndidi will be the last woman I will marry. I will not marry anybody again. I don’t want to marry any more. I am okay. I am getting older even though I am healthy; I am okay with 48 wives. I will not marry again; I don’t want to reach 50 wives. You want me to marry two more to make it 50, no!

How many wives have you, yourself?
The number of my children
They are plenty; I don’t know how many they are. You don’t count children, they are gifts from God. I don’t count them. It’s abomination to do so. What I know is that some of my wives have 10 children, some five, some four, some two. We have not recorded any death here either of a wife or child. The last wife is yet to get her own children. One of my daughters is a councilor, serving for the fourth tenure. My first son Emeka has married and he has six children and his first daughter is already married. I have 35 grand children. Many of my daughters are married. One of my wives just came back from the North where she went to see her daughter who gave birth recently. Some of my children are in the universities.
The work I do
The work I do is not by inheritance. It is a special gift from Eze Nwayi. She can choose anybody from the family irrespective of age. It is my destiny; nobody can learn it unless you are chosen because it is very, very hard.

When I will die
Yes I know, and it is God who will say it. When he says, I will know. How can you ask me that question? Do you want me to challenge God? No, I will not.
Me being a politician

I am the father of all the political parties, PDP is my own; PRP is my own; NCNC is my own, all of the parties are my own. Anyone of the politicians who want to contest, if he comes to me, I help the person. I like politics; I love it so much because it is the easiest way to make money in Nigeria today. I did not go to school otherwise I would have become a politician.

Yes, I helped many of them to become governors and commissioners, but I will not tell you their names. Why do you want to know their names? They come from Hausa, Igbo, Igala, Yoruba and other parts of Nigeria. Some are now in the National Assembly; when, you help them and they go up, they will not remember you again. They are wicked.

Achieving my dream of having a village as family
Yes, it has been achieved, God has made it possible, if you come to my house now, you can get more than 300 people, are they not up to a village?
My best wife
Thank you very much. My lovely wife and the one I love most is Ndidi, the last one. I love her most because she is yet to get her own children. When she gets issue up to two or four I will begin to love all of them equally.

Any Will?
I will not share my property now. I made no Will. If I do it now it will bring misunderstanding. God gave me obedient and good wives. Nobody is envious of her neighbour. Even if I die today, they know how to share my property peacefully because they know I am not a wicked man, I am not a bad person; God will never give me or my children power to do bad things. I am sure of that one.

Feeding my wives and children
Some of my sons have money. They are rich. My first son has his own house and is married with six children. The senior rich children are catering for their families. I only see to the upkeep of the junior ones. None of my children is useless. All of them are very responsible. That is why I have no problem.

My strength sexually at 64 and with 48 wives
Yes, I am strong 24 hours. Even in the next 30 years, I am on; in the next 30 good years I have the strength to meet my wives. Do you know the reason? I have no envy in me. I have no time to fight with anyone or struggle for something. Money is not my problem. I have never made case with anybody. I live a peaceful life. All these things make me to grow younger. I am always happy in my compound. Everybody knows what to do and what is forbidden. So, there is no quarrelling or scolding. My wives are happy. If there is no peace in my house it can weaken me both physically and spiritually. I feed very well. If a wife who should feed me for the day fails, another one will take over.

Any regrets in life?
Nothing whatsoever; absolutely nothing. I say nothing at all. I am fulfilled. God is so kind to me. I thank my God for everything. I don’t habour any ill feelings. Even all my wives know this. I don’t tolerate nonsense. If any of my wives misbehaves, I sack her . But thank God none of them has given cause for me to act in that way.
I married all my wives in the traditionally

I did not marry any of my wives in the Christian tradition. I married all of them in the pagan way. True, I was a Catholic and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church and was a Mass server. I had to leave the church when I was poisoned by my enemy.

Advice to my children
I don’t want any of them to tell lies, I don’t want any of them to steal, I don’t want any of them to be jealous, I don’t want any of them to kill or do any evil. I told my children that any of them that disobeys the advice, I will disown him.

Ndidi: why I married my husband
My wedding the herbalist is the best thing that has happened to me in life. I am grateful to God for doing me the favour. He is my choice, nobody or circumstance forced me. I love him because he has a good reputation in our area and beyond. I relate well with other wives. As human beings, if we have any misunderstanding, we settle it immediately before our husband finds out because if he finds out, we will be in trouble.

A really Strange Tale indeed Read On !
By WOLE BALOGUN

Sunday, July 11, 2010
Marriage is a common cultural institution. In Nigeria, it comes in variants, according to the culture group. But it is not known of any ethnic group where it is allowed that a woman would marry two husbands at the same time.

But that pattern of marriage would not have happened until some 16 years ago when a set of twins in Kogi State introduced a strange dimension to marriage by taking one wife and having children from her.

While brothers and close friends kill each other over a woman and for encroaching on each other’s territory, these strange ones scored a weird first in standing the culture of their people on the head. Because this was not acceptable in their world, their father fought the arrangement for as long as he lived. When his pestering became so unbearable, the first known woman to have married two husbands same time, same day and lived and had children for them had to dump the relationship.

Wags in the community have put their finger to the conviction that the strange twins eventually died after their peculiar marriage arrangement was forcefully severed. Yes, they accepted, to do their father’s bidding, but could not contract any other marriage as separate individuals, as demanded by family, until they both died mysteriously.

A peculiar world

The villagers of Ayetoro-Gbede and Ayekunle-Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State witnessed the unusual two young men, who were born about 40 years ago and died the same year four years back. They carried on like they had their private world oblivious of what the tenets of culture taxed them to do. That defiance made them step outside defined lines to take one wife and had children from her.

They were simply known as Taiwo (Towo) and Kehinde (Koido), the general accolade for twins in Yoruba. But they called each other Oba, short for their surname - Obadero. Like an oba (king) even as they called each other, they carried like institutions to themselves and died as mysteriously as they lived.

Saturday Sun had to find out the truth in the story in Kogi State that the two were more than enigmatic. They had everything in common and did everything together. They said the same words, when speaking and joined their buttocks when defecating.

What was responsible for this unusual act was explained by their stepmother and aunt, Awawu Obadero and Racheal Ologe. “The reason for that unusual closeness and attachment was because they came with one placenta at birth and against our tradition of dividing it into two before burial, theirs was not divided. Thus, naturally, they began acting as an individual.”

Because the twins are late as well as their parents, the family home looked deserted when our reporter visited. But their stepmother, elder sister and son are the few inhabitants left. When asked to tell the story of the twins, the old woman, Awawu Obadero, excused herself and went to call the twins’ elder sister from a nearby market. They came back and the story began.

Reliable tale

“The twins’ mother had died when they were barely four years old”, their sister started. “Right from their infancy, they did things in common. They had left home to fend for themselves at about 10. Later, they settled in Ayetoro-Gbede doing bricklaying, farming and other odd jobs. It was there they met their wife, Toyin (not real name), who they shared, in defiance to everyone’s objection. She bore two children for my brothers - Kulu, a female and Ibrahim, a male. Kulu is now married, while Ibrahim stays here in the family house. It was at the time our father insisted that they got married separately that strange and tragic things began happening to them.”

Wife of two

Saturday Sun spoke to the twins’ wife, Toyin, who now lives in Ayetoro-Gbede. She pleaded that her picture should not be published because she has just moved on with another man after the double take.

She said: “I knew Taiwo and Kehinde (her late twin husbands) since adolescence. We met when we were laying bricks in Ayetoro. They were both strange and adorable to me because they did and had everything in common. Both had approached me the same time. They used to say the same word at the same time. Strange even to me, I did not accept or reject their advances. I soon became inseparable from them anywhere they went. I must have been carried away by the way they did everything in common. They felt hunger, urge to urinate and others, the same time. They even expressed love the same manner and time. They were very interesting lovers. So I could not resist them. Even the villagers used to say that only I understood their weird ways.”

The strange wife of two husbands had fondness for the two and possibly would have loved them dearly and equally as they did her. “I called one Iye-Oho, and the other Oba-Oho,” she revealed.

The special woman never held anything back about the affection she had for the duo. It would have been a sizzling double take for her as she revealed that her two late husbands had sexual urge the same time and expressed love, sex and romance the same way. You might be going too far to inquire if any of them was particularly better in bed than the other or if one of them gave her better deal.

Putting asunder

After giving birth to Ibrahim, the second child, father of the weird twins, Eleha Obadero, began putting pressure on them to marraige separate women, in line with customs and tradition. “They did not like that because they had grown so attached to me. I did not also like the idea and so I withdrew from them. It was then they relocated to Ayegunle-Gbede, their hometown. But they never married another woman. Though I was told they tried several women, it never worked out. I had to join them later, hoping things would be better, but their father gave no chance for this re-union till they died in strange circumstances. Then I left with my daughter, Kulu and returned here,” the woman of history narrated.

One child, two dads

Fourteen-year old Ibrahim, the only son of the twins, also confirmed that his granddad at a time pestered his late fathers to get married separately and it was not long after this that tragedy struck. He said: “It is true that my grandfather wanted my fathers to get married to different women. But it wasn’t long after this that strange things began to happen to them. He used to also say that Taiwo was more likely my father, as I behaved more like him.”

But the handsome teen knows, without any doubt, that he has peculiar identity, as, perhaps, the only young man in his world who could be excused to fill a form stating double paternity instead of one, like others. And as a young child growing up, he would not have lacked paternal care, not with two fathers ever present with him.

Strange deaths

Four years ago, after the twins had accepted to toe the line of custom and accept to marry the prescribed way, they died.

Their stepmother, Awawu Obadero said: “ Kehinde was smitten by snake in his farm one day and unusual of him, he did not reveal it until late in the night when it was too late to remove the venom. He died shortly after. After his death, Taiwo immediately became a shadow of his former self and was always saying he would join his brother. In less than a year later, he fell ill and died.

Okilo, the village ballad, told Saturday Sun: ‘If you asked one of them a question, the two will answer at once, saying the same word. They urinate on the same spot. They were very identical and so you cannot differentiate them. They had only one wife whom they were always going out with. They loved her so much. They reigned as strange twins in this village and died the same year.

Finally a big boy gets it for beating the crap out of his wife. The Ondo State government has deposed the embattled Deji of Akure, Oba Oluwadare Adesina Adepoju three weeks after a public altercation with one of his wives.

Oba Adesina had, on Sunday, May 31 led a group of people to assault Bolanle Adesina in a free for all in the public arena in Akure, an act which has been widely criticised by both Akure indigenes and human right groups across the country.

The king of Akure had, on Sunday, been declared unworthy of the throne and his seat was declared vacant by the Akure kingmakers in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

The Inspector General of Police, Ogbonoya Onovo also yesterday ordered a detail investigation of the case and asked the state police command to charge the king to court for assault.

The state government decided on the removal of the king during the its weekly executive council meeting in Akure, the state capital

WRITTEN BY SHARAFA DAUDA AND YAHAYA IBRAHIM, MAIDUGURI
WEDNESDAY, 16 JUNE 2010 05:26
A twenty eight year old qur’anic school student resident in Bulabulin Ngarnam Ward, Maiduguri was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging for killing his 14-year old wife, Amsa Usman Abdu, over disagreement on sex.

The convict said for seven months, his wife only allowed him access to her three times.

A Maiduguri High Court ruled yesterday that Abubakar Goni should be hang by his neck until he is certified dead, declaring that he used a kitchen knife to stab his wife on several parts of her body until she died because she refused to have sexual intercourse with him around 3:00am on October 22, 2003. The presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima, said the man committed culpable homicide punishable with death as provided for in Section 221(b) of the Penal Code..

Goni had during his arraignment told the court that the marriage between him and late Amsa was contracted by his father against his wish, but he accepted his father’s decision in good faith and endured to live with the wife despite her “stubbornness”. He said, “My father married Amsa for me. I never knew her before then but I accepted her as my wife in good faith. During our married life, which lasted for seven months, she disregarded and disrespected me. Whenever I wanted to have sex with her, she refused. For the seven months we lived together, we only had sex three times. I reported her conduct to my father several times, but he begged me to approach her gently as she was still a small girl. My father even reported her to her father, who personally advised her on two occasions”, parts of his statement to the police read.

Goni said on that day, around 2:00am while they were asleep in the same room within his father’s compound where they lived, his late wife repeated her usual turn down.

“I demanded to have sex with her, but she refused. I begged her several times but she still refused. I then left her inside the room, went out and searched for a knife, which I got in the kitchen. I took possession of the knife and went back to the room with annoyance and stabbed her several times at different places,” he confessed.

In his testimony, Goni’s father, Alhaji Goni Umara, said an unusual sound woke him from sleep in the night and he rushed to the scene and found his son with a knife, who told him that he had stabbed his wife. Bintu Goni Umara, a step mother of the husband said, “The knife used by Goni in stabbing his wife belongs to me, and on that day, I left it in the kitchen.” The judge said he convicted Goni as charged even though his counsel pleaded for leniency on ground of age, being a first time offender, and the fact that Goni was legally married to the deceased but was denied sexual intercourse. The counsel said sex is an undisputable right in marriage and refusing Goni made him to act in anger and frustration.

But Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima insisted that the act was a grave and heinous crime and the section under which he was charged provides no option.

In another homicide case heard in the court, one Fadimatu Ibrahim who was accused of killing her husband, Ibrahim Usman, by stabbing him on the chest with a knife was freed.

Fadimatu, a native of Baram in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, was said to have stabbed her husband with a knife on May 17, 2004 and was charged with culpable homicide, which is not punishable with death as provided under section 224 of the Penal Code.

Justice Sanya discharged and acquitted Fadimatu for want of evidence. According to him, the prosecutor failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was guilty of the offence as required in any homicide case, saying there was no proof that Usman died or that Fadimatu caused his death as earlier filed in the case of no submission by the defence counsel, Barrister A. Shettima.

Yesterday, the Ondo State Council of Obas announced the suspension of the Mr

Adepoju for allegedly involving himself in a street brawl with his wife. The council's chairman, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade

Olateru-Olagbegi, said this in a statement issued to reporters after the meeting of the chieftaincy committee of the council in Akure.

This is coming as police authorities in Ondo State also said a full scale investigation has begun into the recent public brawl between the Deji of Akure, Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina and his estranged wife, Bolanle.

The command's public relations officer, Adeniran Aremu, said the state commissioner of police has ordered that the matter be investigated as a purely criminal case and not as a domestic affair as is sometimes done.

He said the case had since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department and the outcome of the investigation would be made known to the public as soon as it is concluded.

"Aside from this, the state police commissioner, Magaji Nasarawa, has already received interim report on the incident," Mr Aremu said.

He also explained that the command had uncovered a plot by some people to foment trouble in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He warned those planning to cause a breach of peace as a result of the incident to refrain from doing so, stressing that anyone caught taking laws into his hands would be ‘dealt with decisively.'

Oba suspended

Mr Olateru-Olagbegi who condemned the action of the Akure monarch in strong terms, said the decision to suspend Mr Adesina from the council was taken after the examination of all available evidence which includes, "reports from newspapers, petition written to the council, the press releases from the Deji and other independent investigations on the issue".

The council observed that the incident was unfortunate and against the norm for those who sit on sacred and exalted royal stools in the state. "The committee condemned in its entirety the attitude of the Deji and dissociate itself from the action. The Deji is suspended in the interim from the council pending a fuller investigation into the matter and a final position of the state government on it"

The assault

The Deji of Akure, on Sunday evening beat up one of his wives in a manner that shocked the people of the state and elicited condemnation from far and near.

Mrs Adesina had earlier been ordered out of the palace by the monarch,

following a slight disagreement. The traditional ruler then invaded the private residence of his estranged wife with stern looking people,

suspected to be thugs, who thrashed the woman and left her with lacerated arms.

A brother of Mrs Adesina and some passers-by descended on the Nissan Pathfinder brought to the scene by Oba Adesina. The vehicle, marked "Deji of Akure", was seriously damaged by the irate youth, who vowed to deal with him seriously. It took the quick intervention of the police from the state command to save him from being lynched by the irate mob.

Although the king has not made any public statement on the issue, the traumatised wife has urged the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to instruct the state commissioner of police to order a full scale investigation into the attack on her person by her husband. Mrs. Adesina, in a petition via her counsel, Ibraheem Aganum and Co. appealed to Mr. Mimiko to use his office to ensure that justice is done. She said the petition became imperative in order to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet

Angry SA president calls for family summit after reports that second wife is pregnant by bodyguard

A furious South African President Jacob Zuma has called an urgent family meeting at his family homestead in Nkandla, in rural KwaZulu-Natal, this weekend to deal with a letter that alleges infidelity by his second wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli. On Thursday, the Durban newspaper Ilanga reported that it had received a letter from "concerned family members" in which MaNtuli is accused of cheating on the president with her bodyguard, Phinda Thomo, who reportedly committed suicide earlier this year.

Recent media reports have suggested that MaNtuli, who has two children, is pregnant again - and the paternity of the unborn child is being questioned by the "concerned family members".

The letter reads: "... what is the mystery now and talked about by the family is whose child is it that she is carrying. Is it ubaba's (Zuma's) child or the ex-private bodyguard?"

The letter says that MaNtuli became pregnant when she and Zuma "were apart and not talking to each other".

Zuma, 68, returned last night from an official trip to India with MaNtuli, 35. The Presidency released a statement on Friday saying Zuma would not dignify "gossip" with a response.

The statement reads: "The Presidency has noted with great concern reports that violate the privacy of President Jacob Zuma and his wife, Mrs Nompumelelo Zuma. The reports appear to be part of an ongoing and malicious campaign to undermine the right of the president and his family to privacy and dignity."

The president's businessman nephew, Khulubuse Zuma, denied that the letter was written by members of the family.

"It is particularly shameful and alarming that the president's political enemies have now taken to masquerading as members of his family to spread malicious innuendo about him and his family," he said.

He said that the family "is united" in distancing itself from the letter.

But, according to insiders, an angry Zuma wants answers from members of his family and has convened an urgent meeting for late on Sunday or on Monday, at which the allegations will be discussed.

"The president is deeply concerned about these allegations," said an insider. "That is why the intelligence (services) and the police are now on this matter.

"He wants to know about the letter and how it ended up in the press."

The latest controversy is further evidence that not all is well in the president's polygamous family.

The first signs of a fissure emerged soon after Zuma's election as president, when MaNtuli and Zuma's third wife, Thobeka Madiba, were caught on camera shoving each other in what appeared to be a fight over who should stand next to him.

When Zuma married KaMadiba, in January, MaNtuli was conspicuous by her absence.

The letter alleges that she has had run-ins with the president's first wife, Sizakele Khumalo, and that their conflict resulted in MaNtuli moving out of the homestead in Nkandla and settling in Durban.

"We, as family, truly believe that ubaba made the biggest mistake of his life by taking MaNtuli as his second wife," the authors of the letter write. "As the family, we are all shocked because we don't know her ... We do feel embarrassed to be associated with somebody like MaNtuli and feel sorry for ubaba, who has to live with her for the rest of his life."

It was reported that MaNtuli paid a fine of a goat in April this year as a punishment for her alleged cheating.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Times has established that a top South African actor's previous relationship with MaNtuli has come back to haunt her.

Although the two were an item before she became involved with Zuma, the married actor has confirmed that they have a child together - although this is something he has yet to tell his wife.

Earlier this year, Zuma was embroiled in controversy when the Sunday Times revealed that he had fathered an illegitimate child with a daughter of South African soccer boss Irvin Khoza.

Stern-looking military men recently stormed the Trinity Anglican Primary School, Gwagwalada, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a commando style, abducted two pupils and fled. Panic seized teachers and pupils of the school when they sighted the unfriendly visitors, all naval officers, who were said to have demanded for the head teacher screaming, “who is the headmaster/mistress here?”

The five armed men, according to eye-witnesse accounts, proceeded to whisk away Favour and Marvel Steve Midalah, both pupils of the school, in the full glare of the shell-shocked teachers and other pupils.

An eyewitness recounted: “A well-fed" woman was directing the officers on what to do. When our headmistress confronted them, the woman told her to ask the parents to come to police station in Gwagwalada and meet the children there.”

Mother of the abducted kids, Mrs. Paulyn Midalah alleged that the abduction of her children was carried out on the order of the wife of a retired top naval officer. She said the woman also gave order to the police to arrest her and detain her along with her children until her husband would come for them.

She said her children had left home for school in the morning of Tuesday, April 28, 2010: “Around 10.30am that day, I received a telephone call from my children’s headmaster that a certain woman had come to the school with armed naval officers to pick my children from school.

“I immediately put a call through to my son, Favour, and he picked it and said ‘Hello Mummy.’ Soon after, I guess someone had collected the phone from my child. “After that, all attempts to reach him on that phone proved abortive as my phone kept telling me the number was switched off. I became very worried and rushed to the school and met the headmaster who confirmed that a certain woman came with armed naval officers to pick my children from school and bundled their bicycles into her vehicle.

“The headmaster couldn’t remember the name of the woman that came to the school to whisk my kids away. I rushed to the school gate but couldn’t find anyone to give me proper briefing. I rushed back to the house and the kids were not home, I was more confused. and started running up and down our Estate at.

“Somewhere in our estate, Phase 1, Gwagwalada, I sighted a white bus carrying the children’s bicycles. I later learnt that it was the wife of a top naval chief (name witheld) who came to my children’s school with armed naval officers to whisk my children away.

“My husband had worked for her before, but he left them three years ago after my family had a motor accident on March 17, 2007. He sustained compound fracture and even lost his left elbow. My son Favour’s face was so badly battered by glasses that we had to take him for plastic surgery. She abandoned us to our fate and my husband had to sell the house he had just built then to raise the money for surgery on his badly fractured left hand.

“My husband still has about 15 iron screws in his left hand up till today. My son’s face, where surgeons removed glasses from three months, six months and even one year after the accident, is still there as proof of man’s inhumanity to man.

“When I saw them, I confronted them. They said I needed to go with them to the Gwagwalada Police Station, which I did. On arrival at the police station, the woman started making some allegations against my husband and me. She told the police to detain us and never to release me until my husband surfaced. That she had an unsettled issue with my husband. I told her that I didn’t work with her so what was my offence?

“She kept raining abuses on me and said that I must sleep at the police station. We eventually slept at the Gwagwalada Police Station.

“The following morning my family, friends and well wishers prevailed on the police to release the children. Before my children could be released, the Inspector Crime at the station had to call the naval chief’s wife and obtained her permission.

“All attempts by our family, friends and well wishers including that of a lawyer to bail me proved abortive. Police vehemently refused to grant me bail saying I must get clearance from the woman or my husband had to come. I told them that my husband was out of town on a business trip but they would not listen.

“In the police cell I was subjected to the most dehumanizing experience of my life. I had to lie on bare floor that had been contaminated with urine and human excretment, with maggots scattered all over the room. I spent three days at Gwagwalada Police Station.

“By afternoon on Friday, April 30, 2010, the Inspector, Crimes at the station instructed a junior police officer to bring me from the cell. When I was brought out he said the woman wanted to speak with me.

“She said since I had refused to tell them the whereabouts of my husband she has instructed the police to transfer my case to Kuje where I would be jailed. Not too long after we spoke, I was taken to Kuje Police Station and detained for another four days.

“All attempts to bail me were denied because according to the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), besides that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was not around, the woman had not given them the go ahead.

“It was not until the fifth day when my family members threatened to bring my children back to the police station that the DCO agreed that my family should bring someone with landed property at Kuje to bail me. When my family eventually brought someone with landed property, the old story of the DPO that the woman was not reachable at the moment continued.

“On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, my brother came to the police station and told me that they had contacted the press. Later, the Inspector Crime from Gwagwalada Police Station came to Kuje Police Station. My brother informed me that surprisingly the man who strongly opposed my release on bail at Gwagwalada Police Station was now canvassing that I be released. He said the woman had communicated to them that she got a call from a journalist and that I should be released to avoid the press. I was released and asked to come with my husband in a week’s time. I spent seven days in police custody

“In the same manner two years ago, she used naval ratings and abducted two of my husband’s younger brothers. They beat them mercilessly and took them to her house where she kept them in custody for one week.

“I hereby appeal to all human rights agencies to come to the aid of my family and stop this injustice against us where some animals are more equal than others. Where a woman would use her husband’s position as a to abduct people’s children from school and use money and influence to deny me bail from police custody for seven days.”

However, all efforts to reach the retired naval chief’s wife on her cell phones proved abortive. She constantly evaded calls placed on her two phone lines. At other times, she picked her calls but once she heard the voice she cut the line and switched off immediately. FCT police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said he is not aware of the development. He promised to find out and later intimate the reporter but he never did.

A heartbroken pensioner who thought his wife was going to die killed himself near the spot where the couple first courted - only for her to get better.

The body of 84-year-old Reginald Heydon was found by police in the River Trent at Shardlow, near Derby, more than three weeks after he disappeared.

An inquest heard that at the time he went missing, Mr Heydon's wife of 60 years, Marjorie, 83, was in a critical condition in hospital.

Derby Coroner's Court was told doctors had told Mr Heydon and his family that his wife was not expected to live much longer.

Hours later on November 2 last year, the pensioner wrote a note to his family, left his home and was never seen alive again.

But in a tragic twist, his critically ill wife recovered from her illness and was discharged from hospital.

Last night Mr Heydon's son, Paul, said: 'We had the impression she had hours to live. We were told that on the day that she went into intensive care.'

But after his father had been found dead, his mother recovered and was able to come home.

'That was the real tragedy. If only he had waited,' he said.

Derby and South Derbyshire Deputy Coroner Louise Pinder said the note Mr Heydon left had made it clear what his intentions were.

She said: 'The contents of the letter do suggest he was contemplating taking his own life. There was a suggestion he was going to the river.'

Despite a police search involving helicopters, dogs and a special task force to search the river his body was not found until November 25 by a passerby.

Acting Sergeant Robert Buckley told the court that the area had a significance. He said: 'The river had been a courting area to which they went.'

A postmortem examination carried out on the body gave the cause of death as a vasovagal attack - a nervous attack leading to fainting - caused by submersion in cold water.

Ms Pinder said he would not have suffered. She gave a verdict that Mr Heydon had taken his own life.

The court heard that, during his later years, Mr Heydon had been inclined to drink to alleviate anxiety.

He was taking an anti-depression and his the deterioration of his wife's condition in hospital had exacerbated that.

The inquest was told his wife had undergone surgery at the Royal Derby Hospital for a swallowing problem, after which her condition became critical.

Mr Heydon said of his father: 'When the news came about mum he seemed like he knew how serious it was.

'He had accepted things were not going to be the same. But she got better and she was able to come home afterwards.'
