WASHINGTON DC —A REPORT on former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar was presented to the United State’s Senate yesterday.

The US Senate report which showed how funds were transferred on behalf of the former number two citizen showed that: “From 2000 to 2008, Jennifer Douglas, a U.S. citizen and the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and former candidate for President of Nigeria, helped her husband bring over $40 million in suspect funds into the United States, through wire transfers sent by offshore corporations to U.S. bank accounts.”

The report said: “In a 2008 civil complaint, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, alleged that Ms. Douglas received over $2 million in bribe payments in 2001 and 2002, from Siemens AG, a major German corporation.

“While Ms. Douglas denies wrongdoing, Siemens has already pleaded guilty to U.S. criminal charges and settled civil charges related to bribery and told the Subcommittee that it sent the payments to one of her U.S. accounts.

In 2007, Atiku Abubakar was the subject of corruption allegations in Nigeria related to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.

“Of the $40 million in suspect funds, $25 million was wire transferred by offshore corporations into more than 30 U.S. bank accounts opened by Ms. Douglas, primarily by Guernsey Trust Company Nigeria Ltd., LetsGo Ltd. Inc., and Sima Holding Ltd.

“The U.S. banks maintaining those accounts were, at times, unaware of her PEP status, and they allowed multiple, large offshore wire transfers into her accounts. As each bank began to question the offshore wire transfers, Ms. Douglas indicated that all of the funds came from her husband and professed little familiarity with the offshore corporations actually sending her money. When one bank closed her account due to the offshore wire transfers, her lawyer helped convince other banks to provide a new account.

“In addition, two of the offshore corporations wire transferred about $14 million over five years to American University in Washington, D.C., to pay for consulting services related to the development of a Nigerian university founded by Abubakar.

“American University accepted the wire transfers without asking about the identity of the offshore corporations or the source of their funds, because under current law, the University had no legal obligation to inquire.

Spouse's illness stalls Eucharia's divorce suit

Written by Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare
Thursday, February 4, 2010

The ongoing divorce suit involving popular Nollywood actress, Eucharia Anunobi Ekwu was stalled before Justice Elfreda Williams-Dawodu at the Probate and Family Division of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Wednesday, due to her estranged husband's illness.

Counsel for Charles Ekwu, Mr. Anenele Okoh, had told the court that his client was unavoidably absent because he took ill few days ago.

He added that Ekwu had not been aware of the divorce suit against him until recently when he briefed him about it, adding that he was in the country and Eucharia was aware of the fact that he was ill.

However, Eucharia claimed it was a lie because she had not seen, heard or spoken with him in four years.

Eucharia also added that there were some things that she had been keeping from the court all the while that the case had been ongoing.

"Charles has been threatening me that I would never marry another man while he is alive," Eucharia said.

According to her, the text message sent by Charles read: "If you don't marry me, you are not going to marry another man."

Charles Ekwu had, on Wednesday, November 15, 2009, appeared for the first time in the divorce suit instituted by his estranged wife.

Until the surprise appearance of the husband, Eucharia had been scheduled to adopt her final written address without a representation from the husband.

But Charles, through his counsel, had told the court of his readiness to pursue the matter, claiming that he was outside the country, all this while.

Anenele had told the court that his client was ready for divorce but only wanted to clear some issues with the court.

The matter was subsequently adjourned till February 18, for further hearing.

WINNIE Madikizela-Mandela has threatened legal action against acclaimed South African director Darrell Roodt, who plans to make a film about her life.

A letter from her attorneys says Madikizela-Mandela is "extremely concerned" to hear of the planned film about her life "in circumstances in which she has never been approached for consent or at all".

"It is difficult to understand how a production bearing the name of an individual who has not been consulted at all could ever be appropriate or tell the full story of that individual life, as media reports suggest this production is intended to," the letter says.

"This is certainly the case here where our client has not responded to allegations and comment which have been made about her, precisely because she has sought to protect her sphere of personal privacy as best she can in extremely difficult and turbulent times," the attorneys' letter to Andre Pieterse's Ironwood Films reads.

Attorneys met with Roodt and Pieterse on Friday, but failed to reach an agreement with the film-makers.

News of the film, Winnie, hit South Africa late last year when it was revealed that American singer turned actor Jennifer Hudson had been offered the starring role.

The movie, which is set to start filming in May, has taken Roodt more than six years to bring to production and is based on a biography of Madi- kizela-Mandela by Anna-Marie du Preez Bezdrob.

South Africa's most acclaimed actor, John Kani, has voiced discontent at the casting of Hudson.

"From which angle has the movie been written?" Kani asked. "Will she be seen as a villain? If you did a movie of Nelson Mandela in 1967 it would have been that of Osama bin Laden."

He did not see a problem with an American portraying Madikizela-Mandela.

Kani said he fully supported freedom of expression and the right to interpretation, but warned that there were certain "sensitivities that must be considered" when telling the story of the person people consider to be the Mother of the Nation.

He did not see a problem with an American portraying Madikizela-Mandela, but felt producers should first explore the pool of local talent and consult local actors' unions before casting their eyes elsewhere.

"Now it's a free-for-all. Artists come here like they're tourists and end up telling you: 'I'm watching you'," said Kani in reference to the beer ads featuring Louis Gossett Jr.

"Jennifer Hudson is welcome to play Winnie, but what frustrates me is the South African producers' fascination with Hollywood. Yet they are the first persons to talk about 'local is lekker'," said the veteran actor and playwright.

Neither Roodt nor Pieterse was available for comment. Bezdrob, the author of Winnie Mandela, A Life, has said she hoped it would be a balanced movie and has described Madikizela-Mandela as "an incredible person".

In the letter to Ironwood Films, Madikizela-Mandela's attorneys warn the film-makers that she reserves her legal rights in the matter.

"Our client would have expected that the principal concern of the producer of such a film publication would be the need to respect the fundamental rights of those to be depicted particularly where the struggle for fundamental rights is the backdrop to the story itself," the attorneys write.

But a copyright expert believes that, although Madikizela-Mandela may object, she would struggle to win a court battle. "Normally, that would be a breach of a person's right to privacy. But she's a very public figure who's very well-known.

"Generally, there's nothing she can do to stop them from making a movie like that unless it's defamatory," said Spoor and Fisher.

Yar' Adua: Nigeria mocked [lampooned] in South Africa

Obinna Ezeobi and John Alechenu

The refusal of President Umaru Yar'Adua to hand over power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has turned Nigeria into a laughing stock at an international conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

One of the speakers at the Mining Indaba Conference and a global economist, Dr. David Hale, told participants on Tuesday that Yar'Adua was very ill and might pass on within six months.

He was not done with the comment as he went on to add that Nigeria would prepare for another election in six months after the expected passage of the President.

He said, "In Nigeria, the President has been in Saudi Arabia for nearly three months for medical treatment and he refused to hand over to the vice-president, even though the people are calling for it.

"He is suffering from acute heart problems and should be dead in six months. So, in Nigeria, there should be a new election in six months after the death of the President."

The remarks by Hale, who is the Chairman of David Hale Global Economics, surprisingly elicited loud laughter from the participants and protests from members of the Nigerian team at the event.

Delivering the keynote address titled "Global Outlook," Hale also said that Nigeria, which needed at least 20,000 megawatts for stable electricity supply, however, regretted that the nation was only able to generate 2,000MW.

In a country by country analysis, the respected economist said that Nigeria's poor power supply made it a difficult environment to invest in.

Hale, whose clients include investment management firms, major hedge funds and multinational companies, is based in Chicago, United States.

He is a member of the National Association of Business Economists and the New York Society of Security Analysts.

The participants comprised mining executives from across the world, investors, analysts, financiers, journalists, policy makers, etcetera.

Speaking at the Nigerian Day at the Indaba Conference, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Senator George Sekibo, described Hale's comments as unfortunate and highly condemnable.

Sekibo said that Nigeria would make its displeasure on Hale's comments known to the organisers of conference and demand an apology .

According to him, the Nigerian government will be advised to also take up the matter diplomatically when the delegation returns home.

Sekibo said, "It is important for participants at the conference to note that Nigeria has taken giant strides in mining, especially in the last few years; that is in addition to providing the much needed infrastructure for investors' participation.

"We assure you that Nigeria is stable. There is not going to be any war anywhere, there is not going to be any division anywhere.

"Mr. President is not feeling very well now, every person can have such a situation. And I believe he will come out of it. Nigeria will still stand as a very strong country."

Another member of the Nigerian team, Alhalji Suleiman Kassim, also condemned the claim by Hale that Nigeria's total electricity output was only 2000MW.

Kassim, who is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, explained that Nigeria was generating over 3000MW and was hoping to increase it to 6000MW.

He maintained that since Indaba was a professional conference for stakeholders in the mining industry to relate, it should not be exploited by "uninformed political commentators" to deride a sovereign nation.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji, is to appear before the Senate on Thursday (today).

The Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Senate is also scheduled to meet at the official residence of the President of the Senate, Mr. David Mark.

Mark, who announced this during plenary on Wednesday, did not give reasons for Abba-Aji's invitation.

It was, however, gathered that it was a fallout of the closed- door session which the Senate held with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, on January 21, 2010 over the President's health.

Abba-Aji is expected to, among other things, answer questions as to whether or not the President asked him to transmit a letter to the National Assembly on his behalf.

A national newspaper (not THE PUNCH) had reported that the President wrote a letter to the National Assembly in line with the provisions of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution before he travelled to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The newspaper report said the Presidential aide did not transmit the letter for unknown reasons.

US court convicts Nigerian couple of forced servitude

Agency reporter

A United States federal jury in Texas has convicted a Nigerian-born couple based in Arlington, Texas, Emmanuel and Ngozi Nnaji, of forcing a widowed Nigerian mother of six into servitude for nine years.

The US Justice Department said in a statement on Wednesday that a jury found the defendants guilty of conspiracy, forced labour, document servitude, alien harbouring and false statements. Ngozi and Emmanuel Nnaji each face a maximum sentence of up to 55 years in prison.

According to the evidence at trial, the couple enticed the widow to come to the US to be their domestic servant by falsely promising a salary and support for her children, whom she was struggling to support.

The defendants procured fraudulent immigration documents, confiscated the victim's documents, harboured her in their home and compelled her to work long hours with no days off for little or no pay. They also used a scheme to isolate her and restrict her communications, withheld her documents and pay and refused her requests to return home or be paid.

Court documents also said the couple failed to provide support for the victim's six children in Nigeria, limited and monitored contacts with her family in Nigeria, isolated her from normal society in the United States, and refused to allow her to regularly attend church. According to the evidence at trial, Emmanuel sexually assaulted the victim and made her too scared to call the police.

A statement quoted Assistant Attorney-General for the Civil Rights Division, Thomas E. Perez, as saying, "Holding other human beings in servitude against their will is a violation of human rights that will not be tolerated in our free society. This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to combating human trafficking in all its forms, vindicating the rights of trafficking victims and bringing human traffickers to justice."

DETECTIVES at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command are current growing grey hairs over the gruesome murder of a lawyer, Mrs. Pamela Ebuzeme and two of her domestic aides in Karu, a satellite town in Abuja on Monday advertisement According to family sources, the late Mrs. Ebuzeme, who ran a travels agency in the city centre, left her home for the office on Monday, dropping her daughter in school along the way. At about 11.30 a.m. she was driven back home by three men who went straight into the duplex located at Karu Phase Two where they axed Mrs. Ebuzeme to death. The assailants also killed their first victim's cook in her kitchen. Thereafter, they lured the gateman into the sitting room, who, when he saw the gruesome scene, attempted to make good his escape by running upstairs but was also hacked down. Having ensured that the three were dead, the assailants reportedly sped away in the late lawyer's sports utility vehicle, locking the gate with a padlock on the outside. At the close of school, Mrs. Ebuzeme's daughter, who expected her mother to pick her up, waited for her to no end. After putting several calls to her mother's phone which went unanswered, the worried daughter later called her father, Mr. Ekene Ebuzeme, who later came at about 4.00p.m.to take her home. When they got the house, Mr. Ebuzeme, a Quantity Surveyor, blared his car horn for the security man to open gate to no avail and decided to open the gate by himself with his spare key. In the house, Mr. Ebuzeme fell on the gruesome scene of the triple homicide and raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours. Later some policemen from Karu Division arrived at the scene. When The Guardian visited the house yesterday, a team of policemen led by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 7, Mrs. Ivy Okoronkwo was there but declined to speak on the issue. But the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT Command, Jimoh Moshood, confirmed the incident. His words: "I can confirm to you that the incident took place and we have started investigation with a view to arresting the perpetrators. We will inform you about the outcome of the investigation. We are determined to explore all avenues and the state CIC has commenced full investigation." Associate Parish Priest, St. Donald's Parish, Karu, Rev. Cyprian Imandeh, who was among the first set of sympathisers to arrive at the scene after the alarm raised by Ebuzeme, said it was "a case of gruesome murder." According to him, Ebuzeme and his late wife came to the church last Sunday and played significant roles in the conduct of the day's mass. He added: "They are very strong members of our church. Just last Sunday, we all met in the church where I conducted the mass. What I saw when we went to the house shocked me and I could not sleep when I got back home. This is a gruesome act but God will surely punish those involved."

The cabinet must stop lying to Nigerians about President Yar’Adua’s illness and face up to the reality that he is no longer able to perform his duties, information minister Dora Akunyili bluntly admonished fellow ministers yesterday. At the regular weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, Mrs Akunyili stunned her colleagues by presenting a memo in which she challenged them to tell Nigerians the truth about the president’s health and stop deceiving the people. The Council had, at its meeting last week, reiterated its position that Mr. Yar’Adua, who has been away in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment in the last 73 days, was still capable of leading the country. The ministers also said the president did not have to write a letter to the National Assembly empowering his deputy, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to act on his behalf. Mrs. Akunyili, however, ensured that yesterday’s meeting did not follow the usual bland form when she submitted a memo to the council asking members to face up to the incapacitation of the ailing president and seek the right means to transfer power to Mr. Jonathan in the interest of the nation.

Olalekan Adetayo A 22-year-old lady, Ijeoma Obezim, is currently in the custody of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing her friend during a fight over a bucket. advertisement The suspect reportedly used a razor blade to inflict grievous injuries on the face of her friend, Ada Okeke, in their residence on Saturday. The 25-year-old Okeke was later confirmed dead at the nearby Tolu Medical Centre where she was rushed to for treatment. The suspect, the victim and two other ladies, Chineye and Chika, were said to be occupying the same room in a house located on Ayorinde Street, Tolu, a suburb of Lagos. When paraded before journalists in Lagos on Monday, Obezim said that trouble started when she needed a bucket Okeke had earlier used to wash some clothes. She said she was about using the bucket to take her bath when the deceased challenged her and they started exchanging words. The argument, according to her, later led to a fight which was settled by their neighbours. She accused Okeke of biting her during the fight. She confessed that she took a razor blade and inflicted the injuries on the deceased. "I never knew it would turn out this way. I am not happy that she died. It was just a minor disagreement," the suspect said. The command's spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said that policemen attached to Tolu Division were currently investigating the case. Mba, a superintendent of police, however, said that the case would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti Street, Yaba, for further investigation.

House of RepresentaTHIEVES No honour amongst thieves any more, We may dare say he is Ali Baba ! The House of Representatives yesterday ended its sitting abruptly, preventing members from discussing the absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua. With the House polarized into two camps, the Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, adjourned the session barely one hour after it commenced. However, the chairman of the committee on rules and business, Ita Enang, whose committee draws up agenda for House sittings said the blame for the brief session should actually go to his committee. “We had some problems, that is why the session was brief. The problem is entirely mine.” But he didn’t say what the problem was, exactly. Dimeji Bankole yesterday threatened to expose committee chairmen who collected money to organise public hearings without carrying out the exercise. Mr. Bankole said at the end of the plenary session that these chairmen came on behalf of their committees to collect these funds since November last year but for three months had neither organise the hearings nor explained why. He did not mention the amount each committee received or the number of committees involved in this attitude. The Speaker also asked the committees that are yet to submit their reports on the 2010 Budget to the Appropriation committee to do so immediately. “You have the next few minutes before adjournment to do that work,” he said. “This is because the Appropriation Committee has, from Wednesday (today) to move on. Also, those committees that have received funding since November last year, and have not organised public hearings on the bills referred to them, I will not hesitate to announce their names on live TV on Thursday.” Mr Bankole had, last week, pleaded with the affected committees to organise the hearings and told the committees that were yet to submit their appropriation report to do so. Constitution Review Also yesterday, a bill that seeks to expunge Section 315 of the 1999 Constitution scaled second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill titled, “A Bill for An Act to Amend the 1999 Constitution,” was sponsored by Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta). Section 315 reads in part that (1); “Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, an existing law shall have effect with such modifications as may be necessary to bring it into conformity with the provisions of this Constitution and shall deemed to be: [a] an Act of the National Assembly to the extent that it is a law with respect to any matter which the National Assembly is empowered by this Constitution to make laws; and [b] a law made by a House of Assembly to the extent that is a law with respect to a matter on which a House of Assembly is empowered by this Constitution to make laws.” (2) The appropriate authority may at any time by order make such modifications in the text of any existing law as the appropriate authority considers necessary or expedient to bring that law into conformity with the provisions of this Constitution.”

Al Qaeda has found their ideological soul mates in al-Shabaab, Somalia and is now turning to Northern Nigeria. Photo: An al-Qaeda cell in North Africa, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), yesterday offered to help Nigerian Muslims with training and weapons during their battles, as Nigeria grapples with religious crisis. This deadly offer is coming 71 days after President Umaru Yar ‘Adua travelled out of the country on health grounds without fulfilling the constitutional obligation of handing over power to his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan. According to a Reuter’s report, the al-Qaeda group, while claiming a constituency in the Nigerian Muslim community, said, “we are ready to train your people in weapons, and give you whatever support we can in men, arms and munitions to enable you to defend our people in Nigeria,” according to its statement posted on Islamic websites that often carry statements from groups using the al-Qaeda signature. Trying to lend a global perspective to its cause, the extremist promised support to Nigerian Muslims: “You are not alone in this test. The hearts of Mujahideen are in pain over your troubles and desire to help you as much as possible, in the Islamic Maghreb, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Chechnya.” The statement was signed by Abu Mus’ab Abdel-Wadoud, who was described as the “emir”, or leader, of the group. Religious crises have plagued the nation since independence and only recently in Jos, the Plateau state capital, over 300 lives were lost in an ethnic conflict in December 2009, which, as usual, eventually took the complexion of a religious battle between Christians and Muslims. Earlier in July, an Islamic sect called Boko Haram staged attacks on security operatives across states in Northern Nigeria, calling for the imposition of sharia law on Nigeria. Last December, another sect, the Kalo kuta, also staged series of attacks in Bauchi state. All the crises were quelled by security operatives drawn from the rank of both the police and the military. The Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, personally deployed the military to halt the violence in Jos after four days of fratricidal clashes between Christians and Muslims. Speaking to NEXT by telephone yesterday, the Missionary leader of the Ansarudeen Movement in Nigeria, Abdulrahman Ahmad, decried this new development as “funny and laughable” saying the internet is “a supersonic highway where anybody and anyone can post anything.” “As a stakeholder in the Nigerian community,” Mr. Ahmad said, “I can authoritatively assure you that there is no al-Qaeda sect in Nigeria and the Nigerian Muslim community is not that loose and helpless to accept any offer or help from any organisation claiming to be fighting a religious war.” When asked about the likelihood of sects like Boko Haram and Kalo Kuta to accept such dubious offers, Mr. Ahmad admitted that he was worried about the state of preparedness of the security forces. “The honest truth is that our security operatives are not doing their jobs in securing the lives and properties of Nigerians. These sects you mention were fighting Muslims as well during their campaign” he said, adding that “People just hap on religion when it shouldn’t be; poverty and joblessness are issues that should be addressed.” The cleric enjoined journalists not to be deceived by every available information and suggested that they do some investigative journalism to find out the true situation. We are ready The Nigerian police, reacting to the new threat, said it is “capable of protecting lives and properties of Nigerians.” The force’s deputy public relations officer, Yemi Ajayi said that, “such a message will not be a threat. They will not be a threat, as we have always proactively done a number of things to checkmate such alarms.” He said the information came from ‘mischief makers’ and promised that, “the Nigerian Police will not rest on our oars, we will not go to sleep be it the handiwork of mischief makers.” Investigations revealed that the group does not have a website. They operate like other militia groups, like the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta by sending email to reporters to state their views. The al-Qaeda organisation in the Islamic Maghreb have links to al-Qaeda which aims to overthrow the Algerian government and institute an Islamic state through an insurgent campaign. The group is involved in smuggling, protection rackets and money laundering across the borders of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya and Chad - which provides its financial underpinnings. However, recent developments seem to indicate that a splinter group may have sought refuge in the Tuareg regions of northern Mali and Niger following crackdowns by Algerian government forces in the North and South of the country since 2003. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23 year old Nigerian is on trial in the US for attempting to bomb an American plane over Detroit on Christmas day in an attack claimed by a Yemen Al Qaeda unit in the Arabian Peninsula.

Charity, as they say begins at home, but for Chief Tony Anenih, it should now begin abroad. After all, a few months ago he exerted his influence of fixing PDP primary (s)election of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as PDP gubernatorial candidate in Anambra State. advertisement You will recall that on that occasion the Uromi born Chief who is schooled in the act of politics threatened to change his name from Anenih to Anene; an Igbo name, which if properly translated would mean: let’s watch! The logic was to rub it on the highly republican Anambra people who were still seething in anger over Soludo’s imposition. Soludo’s imposition was so damning that the Vice-President, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan have had to wail at the back page of Thisday newspaper’s Missile space of November 14, 2009 thus: “Mr. President felt so sad that our own party, PDP, couldn’t conduct primaries in Anambra State_We are quite sad because we believe that PDP being the ruling party should lead by example. The PDP, like a house built with spittle which collapses under the morning dew has manifestly caved in to the forces of nature and found itself disgracefully depleted by and by. It has been losing a chunk of her following to other political parties by the reasons of its high-handedness, arrogance of power, autocracy, and deceitful party leadership, prated on the imperious lordship of a few godfathers. Their patronage is evidence in their ability to single-handedly select the highest bidder for political office. The people of Etsako Central have demonstrated, in full freedom, that Mr. “Fix it is no longer a force to reckon with in the emerging political evolution in Edo State. The re-run election was the needed precursor that made the bold statement that the strength of the mass of our people is the weakness of the godfather, and that the strength of the godfather has been the weakness of the people all along. But more worrisome is the height with which these ruinous cabals have been held and patronized over the years; unknown to the people that the deification of mere mortal as Anenih is absolutely at the heart of our fragile efforts for Electoral Reform; more also our feeble quest for liberated democratic space. Edo State, pathetically, has suffered a great deal from gross imposition, judging by the poor representations which led to the pillaging of resources over the years. While the valiant people of Etsako Central are celebrating their escape from endured political, social and economy distress; savouring the ultimate triumph of liberty, Dan Orbih, the factional chairman of PDP is double speaking, gnashing his teeth and nursing his wounds. In one breathe, Orbih collaborated the stance of INEC, AIG Felix Ogaudu, PDP candidate, Chris Umogbai and Independent Election Monitors and journalists as the fairest and freest election in recent times, both in Edo and the nation at large. Do you blame a group of self-collected thugs whose only understanding of politics is brigandage of monumental proportion? This is one election the PDP will live to remember. Their plans and games fell on its face. They also advocated for the deployment of 3000 Mobile anti-riot Police men, all of which they got. But their major undoing was that they could not also import the electorate to vote for them! Their strategies worked against them. The Mobile Police they brought from Abuja and other neighbouring states did their job. They kept PDP thugs out of circulation. The Police, for the first time, applied decorum and utmost neutrality common only among the British Bobby. The people hated PDP with disdain. PDP’s eight years of the locust under Chief Lucky Igbinedion and 18 months of Prof. Osarhemen Osunbor’s illegal residency at the State House was worse than unleashing technology muster, bulldozer on the state. They ran the state aground on the auspices of the now rested godfather. Granted that no matter how you deodorized horse that the stench remains, but we shall say, never again like the children of Israel by the River side of Babylon. Never again shall we be enticed by the uselessness of arrogant lot who see the appropriation of the people’s civic right as given! Never again shall we genuflect at the patronage altar of a leaser being for our political salvation!! The muster has fallen to rise no more. • Akhabue Okogie a Social commentator Lives in Uromi.

THE call by former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on President Umaru Yar'Adua to resign as president if his health is failing him has widened the gap between the president and his predecessor, even as it has deepened the suspicion of Yar'Adua's loyalists and a section of the North about a Jonathan presidency. advertisement Impeccable sources told the Nigerian Tribune that many northern leaders who were clamouring for the handover of power to Vice-President Jonathan, owing to President Yar'Adua's continued stay outside the country on health grounds, had also changed their commitment to such a move. Sources close to President Yar'Adua said he was moved to tears when he was told of President Obasanjo's pronouncement. "The president was very bothered because former President Obasanjo was one of the few Nigerians who had been given the privilege of having access to the president on his sick bed," a source close to the president said. The Yar'Adua Chief Obasanjo saw on the sick bed, it was learnt, hardly recognised his predecessor and that the two could not engage in any meaningful discussion because of the state of Yar'Adua's health. The president's men were said to have opened up to President Obasanjo on his health challenges and why the doctors said he needed more time in Jeddah to recuperate before he returns to Nigeria. Sources said the access given to President Obasanjo had now proved counterproductive because the former president had used the information given to him against President Yar'Adua. "Why must he do this? Is it because of the urge for power always?," a source close to President Yar'Adua asked. The sources also claimed that the account of Yar'Adua's health status in the build-up to the 2007 elections as reported by Obasanjo is "grossly inaccurate" and "self-serving." A source who has always been close to President Yar'Adua before he became governor of Katsina State in 1999 said Obasanjo was only playing to the gallery on the issue. "Is he saying that as president and commander-in-chief of Nigeria, he relied entirely on what Mallam (Yar'Adua) told him? The truth is that in Mallam (Yar'Adua), Allah has shown that He is greater than any person and that those who think they can play God forget their limitations as human beings," the source said. Many sources in the presidency said Obasanjo's public advice to Yar'Adua to quit was seen as his unrelenting commitment to see Vice-President Jonathan sworn in as president, which the Yar'Adua men would not allow to happen. Those who opposed the idea of Dr Jonathan acting as president said they were afraid of what Obasanjo could do. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said: "We all know that Obasanjo is Jonathan's godfather. He made him the governor and the vice-president. If Jonathan gets to power, it is Obasanjo who is back in power and he will come back with his legendary spirit of unforgiveness. Many of us feel this country should go back to a government that will unite rather than divide the country. Obasanjo will divide PDP and the country." But, source said the concern within Yar'Adua's group about Jonathan's return goes beyond the altruism of averting a return to Obasanjo's brand of politics. They said the people close to Yar'Adua were afraid that a Jonathan presidency would expose them to public scrutiny. Almost all the people reputed to be close to President Yar'Adua have been in one financial controversy or another. It is widely believed that they are still in government because they hold the lever of government and that the emergence of another power group will put them on trial. "It is the proverbial musical chairs. Yesterday, it was el-Rufai, Ribadu and Fani-Kayode. Today, it is Yar'Adua's boys. Under Jonathan, it is believed, Yar'Adua's boys will experience what Ribadu, el-Rufai and Fani-Kayode are experiencing today," said an insider in the politics unfolding in Abuja. Meanwhile, the First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar'Adua, is currently making last minute spirited efforts aimed at bringing President Yar'Adua to his feet, following reports that she had been in touch with established spiritualists in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Her efforts in this regard, were, it was said, being complemented by marabouts in Nigeria said to have been contracted by top loyalists of the president in the Presidential Villa. A leading member of pro-Yar'Adua group who spoke with the First Lady told the Nigerian Tribune that she was in Mecca during the last week to offer special prayers with spiritualists in the holy land for the quick recovery of the ailing president. Turai, he said, was very hopeful that Yar'Adua would be fit to return to office within the next couple of days, disclosing that the First Lady had communicated same message to top members of the Yar'Adua cabinet and some state governors with whom she has been in touch, according to him. There have been speculations that President Yar'Adua was fast recuperating and may return to Nigeria any moment, although there has not been any visible sign to that effect. In anticipation of his return to Nigeria, pro-Yar'Adua groups have continued to mushroom in Abuja and are planning to hold a rally in his support Many of the pro-Yar'Adua groups had addressed the media last week, stating their preparedness to hold a prayer procession for the president at the Eagle Square, Abuja, after which they said members would march to the National Assembly to state their position on the president to members. Another pro-Yar'Adua group, which goes by the name Future Nigerian Leaders Group, led by Emeka Okoroji, addressed the media on Sunday and asked Vice-President Jonathan to speak up on his position on the clamour for transfer of power to him. Okoroji said the vice-president could help in defusing tension in Nigeria amid agitations for him to take over power from President Yar'Adua in acting capacity, and in line with the dictates of section 145 of the 1999 Constitution. The pro-Yar'Adua youth leader said members of his group were in support of the position of the court on the unfolding political scenarios in Nigeria, most especially their conclusions that there was no vacuum in governance, and that the transfer of power to the vice-president was needless for now.

He is humble, very humble. He is also behind many charitable causes. Van Vicker is his name and he is insatiable. He believes he cannot be fulfilled until death. For him there is still much to be done and can be done to improve life. Viker, apart from producing films is into advertising and promotions, a feat he achieved through dint of hard work and persistence. He loves his family, but craves to spend more time with them. Read all about him. Excerpts:Van VickerWe learnt that before you do any movie in Nigeria you insist that you get the distribution right in the US. Is this true?It is not true. I don’t insist on being in the movie before I distribute. If I’m doing any movie and I think it will be a hit movie I will discuss with the producer or the EP… my guy, I want to buy this movie after we are done and he either says yes and then we negotiate or no I already have my own distributor. I have been in several movies and I didn’t get the right to distribute them in the US.Again I have distributed some that I featured in and I distributed them in the US. But me insisting that before I’m in your movie, I must have the distribution right, that is so natural. I do not say give me the movie. I pay for them.... I pay cash, so if they are going to charge me whatever the figure is, I pay. So it is not free. I don’t act for free. I never insist that if I don’t get the right in that movie I won’t feature in it. I will just be stifling my own career if I do. So, that’s not the way it works, its negotiable. We talk.We learnt that you are not just an actor… you are beginning to venture into movie production and directing as well?I don’t know if branch will be the very right word. I think it’s more of an addition. I have always had the passion for being behind the cameras. Actually that’s where my career began. I worked with a TV station for so many years and I was trained as a production assistant and then I went as far as being the assistant head of entertainment. I very much know how TV works and how camera works. When I started acting, it didn’t take away that passion, it was just more of something I wanted to explore so I decided to direct and produce. I did my first in 2007, my second production in 2008 and I am doing my third and fourth this year. It’s more of a passion… like the way acting is to me and that way it gives me control of the product I’m putting out there, who I want to be in the movie, what message I want to send out there and not be at the beck and call of the producer all the time. I want to have my own say in what people see and how they are entertained.Does that mean we will see more of you as a producer this year?Yes. I will produce two for a start and probably the last quarter of this year I might just do another one. Let it not be that Van only produces and directs his movies. I will direct anybody’s movie too, if I’m given the opportunity. I have already had two requests and I know with time we will get it done. What is the big deal about RAJ The dancer?I think it’s an excellent movie. Some of the love stories we do are not just about them being love stories. They become a little bit monotonous, the same old crap; get married to this person, don’t get married to that person, mother says this, father says that. I think it’s over flogged. It’s easier for us to shoot love stories, because of lack of equipment and budget. If we are doing a love story, I think we should add some extra spice. I was in a movie titled Beyouncé, a name that I created myself but it is not my production and a lot of people started calling me Raj. After that, I decided to capitalize on the popularity of that name and I want to do sequel to it.When is it coming up, who are the stars in it, why is it different? It will be coming out in Africa by March and in the US and Europe in February . We have Kofi Ajolo from Ghana and the other person is Nana. She is a new actress. The movie is about wife battering but the spice again is the dancing part. So it’s not just the usual thing. I think this movie will be better than my first which was Friday night; the movie I did with Nana Amama. I want to believe that this will be a step-up and I know the future ones will also be something to cheer.Does that make you a dancer?I was trained. I did weeks of training to do that part. I don’t dance but I have got a professional, a choreographer and everything and in my basic schedule I got it done, so I tried. So we see a lot of dancing from Raj?I wouldn’t say a lot of dancing. The first dancing was in the gym where I was competing with someone. The second dancing was the steatites I did for the girl in the movie and the third dancing was the saucer dance that the girl and I performed. So we‘ve got three dances i.e one at the beginning, the next in the middle and the last one at the end.Who wrote the story?I wrote the story. I screen-played the story and I directed it alongside a Nigerian director, Kalou Aryan and I produced it. I was the executive producer. My production company Sky Orange Production was quite involved.People say you are becoming bigger in the Ghanaian movie industry because you are the biggest star… how true is this?I think if you know me, you will realize that I’m a really humble person. I don’t think it is wise for any human being to think that he or she is the ultimate. You know you might have been able to achieve so much people have not been able to attain. It doesn’t make you the ultimate. I think one of the best things in life is for you to have everything and still be very humble. Still be down to earth. For me it is the most important venture that I cherish. Them saying Van is acting like he’s big, that is a terrible perception. Some people try to be mischievous, some because of bad belle. Any how you want to put it … but I totally disagree with that. Whoever knows me will testify that Van is a very humble person. So what happened between you and Abudulsalam?I keep saying that nothing happened between me and Abudulshalam, the CEO of Venus. It’s just a little misunderstanding that has do with scheduling. As a matter of fact he called me up and said he wanted to do a production. He asked if I was in Ghana. I said no and asked him when he was coming down. He said “I’m not too sure yet I will let you know anyway what it is about. I want to shoot a film”. I said Salam don’t tell me you want to shoot next week. He said “yes I want to shoot next week”.Then I said it’s not possible because you need to get real, get used to the idea that people grow in life, they have more responsibilities, their schedule gets tighter. You need to understand that and stop this child’s play. You called me up today and you want to shoot a movie next week, 4, 5 years ago I could afford to do that because I was working for myself and I wasn’t shooting a lot of films, now I can’t do that because I have schedules. I have commitments. I can’t disappoint another man to satisfy you that won’t be fair. That’s bad for business. So he said “okay fine, so when is your schedule” and I said it has to be around the 3rd week or 4th week in March. Then he said “ Ah that is too far… well then you can go ahead and shoot when you are ready we can schedule something, you know I shoot every month”. I said fair enough. But are we going to shoot in March, is it confirmed with you that we will shoot in March because you will wait one week till you shoot and call me up. It still will not work even though you did tell me you will shoot in March because you are not confirming it now. By the time we are in March my bookings would have moved to May, so you need to tell me now.He couldn’t give me a confirmation date and you know two things come to play. I need to see the script to know if I want to do the job for whatever reason. After I’ve seen the script we need to negotiate, then we confirm a date then I know we are in business. Yes! Because he has disappointed me three times. It was all over the papers. Whatever they said ... he came to my office and then he said Van let’s talk this thing out and I said okay.Is it true that Van is the most expensive actor in Ghana ?I wish. Well I don’t know. I think I get what I am worth. I don’t know about the others but I get what I am worth. If I’m the most expensive I thank God for that. I think it is a blessing but I can’t agree because I don’t know what my colleagues earn. They can be earning far more than I do but I am contented with what I have because I know I am getting my worth. So you are saying you are not too big for your industry?Impossible. I am not too big for my industry and I think I love my industry and I know there are lots of people out there who love and support what I do. I am sure a lot of people know that Van is not big… he is just maybe busy, maybe producers are not meeting the protocol to get him to be in their films. Period. How close are you to other Ghanaian stars?I am close to all Ghanaian stars. There is something I have noticed; it has nothing really to do with Van. It seems a lot more guys are closer to the ladies and the ladies are closer to the guys. It is not common to see two, three, four artistes that are of the same sex close. So as it is, I’m closer to more ladies than to the guys and I think the reason is because we almost every time get paired up with the opposite sex so we tend to spend more time together than with the guys and the same thing goes for the ladies. You are close to Nadia?Yes I am close to NadiaJackie?Yes.What about Mama Brown?Yes. We did a movie; she did my first movie for me.What about Majid? You know something? I know Majid, I was going to do a series, before I was directing that series. I actually shot some scenes and Majid was in my movie but I have never released it and he was in that series. Yes Majid is my friend .Let’s talk about Nollywood. Is it true you put yourself in the same class with RMD and Ramsey Noah? That will be a very annoying thing to do. Hollywood’s Brad Pitt is a good actor, Clooney is a good actor but there’s no way Brad Pitt will put himself on the same level as Clooney because Clooney has been there for a while or Albert Ino because they’ve been there. You just have to acknowledge the fact that this person has been there… you need to give them credit, you need to acknowledge them, you need to give them due respect. So if anybody said Van said it, it’s even annoying to the ears… it is ridiculous.Honestly. It is not like we had a beef, I don’t have a beef for any of them.. Maybe if we had a beef, you might say probably he said it, I don’t have a beef with any of them. I met RMD for the first time at Solo Amaku’s birthday party in Asaba.... I think almost two years ago and I said cool dude. We sat, we talked, we laughed and I never met him again. As for Ramsey, before we met, I called him four, five times because I wanted him to do a movie as a brother with him in Liberia. So I spoke to him several times more and not only about the production; there was a time I was in the US and I called him on some other issues I have forgotten. But we have met twice in Abuja. The first meeting was at the location of Reloaded. The second movie we did was when Stephanie called me for Izu Ojukwu’s movie. We had two or three scenes together in the movie..What happened on that set?I got a call from Stephanie when I was on my way to Ghana from Lagos. Stephanie told me that a producer, Izu , would call me for a job and I said fine. So he called me a few minutes later and he wanted me to do a job and I said I am already on my way to Ghana. He told me later that Ramsey could have been on that set but there was a little issue they needed to trash out. I think it was a monetary stuff so I think Ramsey didn’t have the time and he had already been paid and they were already on set. They needed to move on. So that was how they fell back on me. Then I was like let’s do it. I dropped everything and I went to Abuja the next morning .Then I was told Ramsey was coming. So they said there was this other role they wanted me to play, but I said that was not why you called me, somebody must have misread the situation and said I didn’t want to act under Ramsey. But they don’t know the story, you get what I am saying? So I said but I have already been told that he wasn’t showing up that I should come. I’m actually your savior right now and now you want me to look bad.So I went back to him and said my guy I don’t want to play this particular role; but after so much talk I eventually played the role. I thought about this same thing as in if I no do am they go say I no wan play under Ramsey. We spoke on that set for over 40 minutes and it didn’t seem that we had any problem.. I think he is a cool dude, so there is no way that I would ever say that I’m better than even the worst actor. So what happened to Desmond?Concerning this story, I called him after I received your call. I said Desmond, what’s up? He said, fine. I told him how they alleged that I said I won’t play under him and he said no, that is a lie. And I told him that a Journalist was going to call him to clarify the issue, and he said, okay, make dem call. That was it. Honestly, until I read the story, I didn’t remember the incident but I do remember that I have done two movies with him.I don’t remember having such issue with him because for me, it wasn’t an issue. I was given a role like Ikechukwu rightly said and Desmond was also given the same role. Until I got on set I didn’t realize we were given the same role. I don’t know if he got the role then or earlier but I was given the role earlier. I told them that I was already prepared for that role, how are you going to go about it? If I can’t play this role, then you just carry your thing because I don’t want to strain myself and read something new.Let’s just forget it. So, whether they decided to compromise or whether it was a lie, I won’t freaky know; but until I read it, I didn’t remember that particular incident. The story made me look like I intentionally didn’t remember but Ikechukwu remembered. That is the way it was interpreted. The way Ikechukwu’s line was written, If Van no remember, person remember. That was the way it came out. If only you told me about the incident, I would have confirmed it, that yes, I remember something like that but this is what happened but like I said, I didn’t see it as an issue anyway. So, Van is not arrogant? At all, that is impossible. I think I am a very jovial person and as much as I am jovial, I am also quite blunt. I know it is bad sometimes to be blunt but it is also good in a way, so that you don’t look like you are deceiving somebody or being an hypocrite. It has got its negative side and sometimes, it has helped me as an individual to be blunt. So, I have been able to control how blunt I can be, but I don’t think I am arrogant. I don’t think I blow my trumpet, that to me is ridiculous. How have you been maintaining a silent family? It is amazing how strong my wife is because I know many African women might not be able to hold this down. Divorce is everywhere even in Hollywood but the African marriage is way different. I am so proud of her …every time I go home she’s there. I am sure she’s had sad moments and terrible days and nights especially when her friends call her and say, have you seen this movie? Did you this girl kissing Van? Not did you see them kissing?. I know she’s had terrible times over rumors in the papers...Van is doing this to a person, actresses wanting Van in their beds and all sorts of crap. I appreciate her so much. God knew what my destiny was so He gave me the right person to marry. Having said that, juggling family life and my traveling is crazy. On her birthday I wasn’t there. I called her up at midnight because I told her that if anybody calls you before I do, please don’t answer it. I wanted to be the first to say happy birthday. I called her around 10:00 PM . Last year, I wasn’t there, this year I am not there.I know she’s making a lot of sacrifices. So am I, but we must make sacrifices to get what we want in life sometimes and I know it will pay off. My kids, they miss dad, every time I call home, they ask “when are you coming home”, “I want you to come home now”. Those are some of their lines and it breaks my heart. But, I think I am doing it for their future and they will understand. How long have you been married?I have been married for six years. This year, precisely October 17th will be my seventh year of marriage but I have been dating my wife for sixteen years. We have been together since 1994.Do you get scared when you read about and see celebrities breaking-up?I don’t think it bothers me because for me, my wife is not just a wife. I think she’s more of a friend to me than a wife. So, I am not frightened by what I read in the papers . I am not bothered about all these break-ups and make-ups. I am comfortable knowing that everything is going to be well and I know she believes that I am her husband and I am going to be there for life in good times and bad times. So, you are doing all these things to make your marriage work?Yes. I do all I can, and that is why I seem not to be very social because I spend every little time I have with my family. I either go out with my family or go out with my wife and spend quality time with them because I am not always there. People call me and say, Van, I don’t see you at occasions, what’s up? The longest time I spent with my family the whole of last year was 14 days... I mean at a stretch. Before that, 2 days, a day, 3 days, hours. What’s her occupation? She is a Human Resource Manager at Camelot Ghana Limited where they print checks. How many actresses have you dated?None. What happened?Nothing happened. We might be good friends but that does not give room for any intimacy. What happened with you and Nadia? We never dated. As at 1999, we were close, now we are not so close and that is the truth. We were close because we started acting together way back in Ghana and we were paired up a lot of times. I think for the first five movies I did, she was there and so, we became close. I didn’t get close to Jackie like that because Jackie was always on the other side of the film. You know it was usually Nadia and I that were having the love thing going, but until she got involved with ACN, she started traveling a lot and doing other stuff. So that bond was lost because she is on a different level now. At a point in time, she wanted to stop acting, whether it’s true I don’t know. But for me, she just disappeared at a point in time. I didn’t know what was happening and now, we have never been able to get back so close because everybody is getting busier and busier. So, you never dated Nadia? No, we never dated. Several websites said that we went for the Fifth Continent Awards in US and that I was acting as a body guard to Nadia that I wasn’t wearing my ring or hiding my ring. Why would I be hiding my wedding ring when the whole world knows I’m married? Some people even said, Tonto and I were caught in bed. Actually they cut the picture off a movie and pasted it and they said we were dating. People just like to be mischievous and I don’t know why.Does this things get at your wife?If I were her, it will get to me.So, it doesn’t get to her?It does…. it definitely does but if it were me, I would have done worse than she does. She’s human, she’s feminine and that is why I said if I were in her shoes, I would have done worse. What does she do when she sees stuffs like that?I am not going into details of what she does but I am saying that she’s human and she flips sometimes. But does she believe you every time you say it’s not true?Well, my wife trusts me. It is not about believing, it is about how true people want to make it seem that becomes a question. Are you saying that Van is a faithful husband?Yes. I am a faithful husband. How did it all start? It started way back in 1997 when I went for an audition for the post of a presenter in a newly opened T.V. station, TV3 Network, still TV3 Network till date. She saw the advert in the newspaper and told me about it. I did the first audition, the second, the third and I was hired. That was the genesis. I did presentation and production work. Then I resigned and moved on to a radio station, Groove FM. . I was hired to do the drive time program.. That TV station was changed to a local station and because I don’t speak the local language, I had to move on. Then I went to another TV station, Metropolitan Television, MTV for short where I started producing and presenting programs. As a staff, I did uncountable programs, from live to recorded, what have you.I presented and produced a lot. That was where I rose to be the assistant head of entertainment. And while I was there, I went to another radio station, Vibe 91.9 Fm, and then I was presenting a night program, so I was doing the radio work and the TV as well. Then I had it on television series. I was a star in it. I started over in Sun City and then it moved on and that was when I thought about doing a movie. The first one I did was Divine Love; I did that with Majid and Jackie around 2004. I actually stopped radio before I started the film because the series was not giving me time. I later resigned from TV and started running my own advertising agency I named Sky Orange. I did it for a while. Then, the movie thing started getting bigger and bigger and I had to let my partner run Sky Orange while I did other stuff. How has your academic adventure been so far?One of the biggest regrets I have in life is the fact that I never went to the university. I am not going to go into details why I didn’t go but I didn’t go and it is something that if I could turn back the hand of time, I would do anytime. I attended one of the best boarding schools in Ghana, Mfantisipim School but having said that, despite the fact that I didn’t go to the university, I did several courses… I did one in marketing, I did another in accounting but I didn’t really like it, then I did stuff in production. So, I’m looking at upgrading myself. I went to the New York Film Academy because I wanted to upgrade myself. The things you learn in school many times is not the same thing you learn on the job. So, I thought that I have been practicing acting; I needed to learn the book side of it and truly, it has being really helpful. It has opened my eyes to see the things I have been overlooking or things I didn’t even know, or that I have gotten to know how to apply . It has been really helpful. I also intend to do courses in directing, producing and script writing probably this year or next year but I am happy to know that a few of my colleagues are also going to NYFA.Are you fulfilled?I don’t think I’ll be fulfilled till I go six fit deep because for me, there is so much to achieve in life. What are the things you still want to achieve?I still want to do movies. I don’t think I have gotten the kind of movies I want to do yet and even starring. I don’t think I have done a film that will wow me, it hasn’t hit me like that yet and until it does, I don’t think I have achieved anything yet. Some people say you are Liberian, others say you are Ghanaian, where are you from?I am a hybrid of three backgrounds. My dad is Dutch; my mom is part Ghanaian, part Liberian. So, that makes me quarter Ghanaian, quarter Liberian and half Dutch. I was telling my wife what if you weren’t a Ghanaian? Let’s say you are from Nigeria , our kids will be a fraction of one country and one fourth of another country. It is funny. For me, I see myself as a global citizen. Whenever I find myself in Liberia , I tell them I am from Liberia . When I am in Ghana and they ask me where I come from, I will tell them I am from Ghana and when I am in Holland , Amsterdam or wherever, I tell them I am a Dutch man because that is the truth. I can’t run away from it. I have their blood running through me. I might not have spent much time in these places but at the same time, there might be lapses here and there but I do have that blood and I am proud of that .So, how did you get to Ghana ?My dad met my mom in Liberia . He used to work with an electric corporation then. He passed away when I was six. Before then, we came to Ghana a few times but we actually moved here just before the war, because the war hadn’t really broken out like that but we knew it was going to be bad, so we just moved out and we had to basically start from scratch. How .....?We came to Ghana in 1991 and because of the war, it has never been ideal to go back even though some people have gone back. But for me, Ghana is home, Liberia is home, Holland is home. My mom is retired. How close are you to your dad’s family?Whenever I talk about my dad, tears flow from my eyes. I always say, the fact that I didn’t grow with my father made me very strong. It got me determined because I knew there wasn’t a father there to point you out. Mothers will point you out but because she is a single mother, she’s got a lot of responsibility in her hands and she might neglect certain areas . So, it made me very strong.I am not close to my father’s side because you can imagine it, in the 70’s the black and white thing wasn’t really a good topic especially from the Dutch. So, we did not have that raport . He was actually like an outcast because he got married to my mom. I don’t have a link with them because he became an outcast and we didn’t have that relationship as a family. Black and white wasn’t a favorable topic in the 70’s, so it just didn’t work. So, what was his name?Vicker. How come you bear Van Vicker?Van means the son of (Mr. Vicker). So, I can continue to call my boys Van Vicker, so it is the son of that Vicker. What is your full name?Joseph Fhiphi Van Vicker. Fhiphi means, born on Friday; it is a Ghanaian name. After three children, should we expect more?I am done having children. Two girls and a boy are wonderful. I thank God because it is a blessing. What do you expect in 2010?I expect to boost my Foundation some more because I think I have gotten to a stage where a lot of youths look up to me as a model and I will love to encourage them in the best way that I can. I am going to boost my Foundation some more and I am going to reach out to more youths and helping them attain what is possible. I started off by donating to New Life International Orphanage .That for me was to kick start the whole thing and I am in collaboration with Nations Children in the US and a few other companies to be able to have a lot of them donate to my Foundation and in turn donating it to the orphanages in Ghana and possibly Liberia and Nigeria as well. So, my Foundation is paramount to me in 2010. It is unfortunate what has happened to Haiti . It could have happened to any other country. So, it is important that we all show our sympathy.I could have been in Haiti in the middle of January because I did make a pronouncement last year during my premier of Raj The Dancer in the US that I was going to shoot a movie in Haiti with a Jamaican star, a Caribbean star and an Asian star plus Africans and it could have been January 2010. I thank God for my life because I could have been in Haiti at about the time of the earthquake. I thank God but my sympathy goes out to all those who have lost their loved ones, families and relations and I am doing the best I can to help raise funds for Asians because I know I have a lot of Asian fans. My Foundation will raise funds and I also know that Nollywood is trying to raise funds and I am going to be part of that.I also want to be part of the benefit cause in Miami to help raise funds for Asians. Still speaking of 2010, I will produce more movies this year than last year because I also want to also push my directing and production career. It doesn’t mean I will not direct any other person’s movie. I will if I am approached. In 2010. I want to see Van in box office movies, be it mine or any other person’s and I still have a passion for shows and for showbiz. I love it and I will continue to do the best I can.... Are you doing condom indeed? No, I am notIt is something I am also planning to do in 2010. I will be coming out with my own merchandise which is a 2010 calendar. This is my first merchandise , my brand. I intend to come out with a perfume line, as well as clothing… who knows what else it could be? But the calendar is coming up in February and I am sorry for the delay but it’s got to do with the print delay in the US. My calendar will be sold all over the world. The US , Canada , Europe and Africa . So, that is the first of my merchandise but there is more to come. I want the Van Vicker brand to attain the highest height ever.

Court jails banker for stealing from the dead From Tunde Oyedoyin, London A 35-year old banker, who systematically stole £32,200 from the dormant account of the late Anthony Fatayi - Williams, was jailed for two years at the Cambridge Crown Cour, last Thursday. advertisement 26-year old Fatayi-Williams, a nephew of former Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi, was one of the victims killed in the blast in Tavistock Square (near Euston Station), when terrorists attacked London on July 7, 2005. During the trial, the Court heard how Paul Walsh, who worked at the Market Hill branch of HSBC in Cambridge, used a dummy card to access the account after secretly increasing the dead victim's £14,940 credit limit to £38,100. In all, Walsh made 102 transactions before his bosses found out. To hide his carefully crafted plans, Walsh, who admitted false accounting, fraud and theft, redirected correspondence from Fatayi-Williams' accounts to himself, through the bank. But his employers sacked the professional studies officer in 2007, after his bosses found out. The court held that there had been more than a year's delay in issuing the death certificate; hence, the account had not been closed by November 2006. Walsh exploited this delay, plundered the account until his bosses found out in 2007, and subsequently sacked him. Sentencing him, Judge Jonathan Haworth said: "Clearly you were a trusted employee of the bank and are guilty of a gross breach of that trust." Walsh did not limit his activities to Fatayi -Williams, he also hacked into another dormant account, stealing £750

Celebrating female virgins in Nigeria

Theo Egwuonwu is a pharmacist, who from his past relationships had never felt ready taking any lady to the altar; not until he met Angela (nee Ejiaka) after she won Miss Virginity 2008.

After six months of courtship, he concluded he had found his missing rib and they got married in 2009.

The Egwuonwus were present at the third edition of the celebration of Nigerian virgin girls who, from various parts of the country, came together over the weekend at Surulere, Lagos State, to publicly proclaim their decision to remain chaste until their wedding day.

At the event organised by Just For You Media, a non-governmental organisation promoting moral values among Nigerian youth, Ikem Augusta, a 20-year-old Delta State indigene beat 45 other females, aged between 16-30, to become Miss Virginity 2010.

“I am glad to have won. My advice to other girls is that it pays to wait because virginity is too special to give to just anybody. As an African woman, I am proud to be a virgin and I have decided not to give up my dignity till I get married,” said Miss Augusta, a 100 level computer science student of the Delta State University.

Another virgin, from Kogi State, 22-year-old Hauwa Ibrahim, a Mass Communications student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, said her Muslim father was surprised when she told him in 2008 that she wanted to join the Nigerian Virgin Girls. She now participates yearly.

“I have a lot of guys as friends so people did not believe I was a virgin, even my father. But after I went in 2008, people now believe and respect me. Of course, there are guys who want more than friendship. But I always tell them my position. Some stay as friends, while some go,” she said.

Prior to the virginity pageantry, the 46 ladies were examined by Dr. Naheem-Deen Ekemode, a gynaecologist with 35 years experience.

“I examined the girls without penetration while a nurse stood by all through. It was a physical examination by observation meaning that only with my eyes do I look to see if the hymen, which is a membrane, is there or if it has been damaged. And all the girls I certified them as virgins,” said Dr. Ekemode.

Addressing the ladies, Dr. Ekemode said medically, a girl who keeps her virginity is saving herself from contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) which could lead to gynaecological complications.

“Complications from STDs like gonorrhea and others can lead to pelvic inflammatory diseases. And this results in the Fallopian tube being blocked and causes so many other prevalent cases of infertility,” declared Dr. Ekemode, whose medical qualifications span across Africa and Europe.

Advising the virgins to marry preferably between the ages of 18- 26, Dr. Ekemode said complications such as fibroid could arise in women who keep their virginity for too long. He also spoke on the fertility period of females.

“Fibroid grows when the womb is too dormant and nothing is happening there. So keep your virginity but don’t keep it for too long. Also, the peak of a woman’s fertility is at 18 years. By 36 years, a woman has lost two-third of her fertility down to about 45 years when she reaches menopause,” Mr. Ekemode added.

The initiator of the Nigerian Virgin Girls and president of Just For You Media, Adunni Adediran, said her mission is to instil good morals in Nigerian girls, for them to keep their dignity and remain virtuous. She said yearly, certified virgins are given certificates of virtue as proof for posterity.

“Too many girls are being used and dumped by men who promise them heaven but give them hell. Many of them have unwanted pregnancies, many STDs, some even HIV/AIDS. Every girl who keeps her virginity till her wedding day is not only a pride to her and her husband, and their families, but also the nation,” said Mrs. Adediran.

Miss Virginity winner for 2009, Titilayo Odekeye, 24, and a graduate from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, said being the immediate past virgin queen has resolved her will to preach the message of virtue even as she awaits her national youth service call-up.

“When I told my parents I wanted to join, they encouraged me. And until I joined, I never believed there are as many virgins like me. Anywhere I go now, I’ll always support this foundation because the foundation needs more sponsorship for the message to spread,” Miss Odekeye affirmed.

Also at the event, were Nigeria’s former ambassador to Ethiopia and Djiboutu, Segun Olusola; the Erelu of Lagos, Abiola Dosunmu; and other dignitaries who praised the virgins for their decision to “live a life of respect and dignity”.

Commenting on the celebration of virgins in a telephone interview, Bunmi Dipo-Salami, the principal consultant of LaRen Consulting, a development and social change organisation focusing on youth empowerment, said such celebrations are gender biased.

“Yes, some aspects of our culture should be preserved but if for a girl to validate herself as a virgin she has to be examined and go through all this while this is not the case with men, then I think it is gender discrimination. And this is a big problem because it is not adding anything to the development of the nation,” said Mrs. Dipo-Salami.

For Mr. Egwuonwu, who now has a three-months-old daughter, marrying a virgin has remained one of the best decisions in his 35 years of life. He said he has never felt as much love and respect for any other woman as he has for his wife.

“My relationship with her was different from previous relationships. And since we got married, there is hardly any friction. It was not hard showing her how some things are done and she has adapted well. Based on my experience, yes, I’ll advice every man to marry a virgin,” Mr. Egwuonwu declared.
