ABUJA-A Bill to Prohibit the Overseas Basic and Undergraduate Education of Children and Wards of Public Officers and other Matters, awaits second reading in the House of Representatives.

The Bill sponsored by Rep. Emmanuel Bello (PDP/Hong/Adamawa) and slated for second reading by the House after its three-week recess, seeks punishment for public office holders who send off their children for education abroad without a “waiver” from the Education Minister.

“That is rubbish talk you can send your children anywhere you like. This is democracy, if you have money you can send your children in space. Issues like that are better taken as motions instead of Bills.”

“Subject to a written waiver granted under the hand of the Minister for Education, every child and or wards of public servant shall henceforth undergo basic and undergraduate education in the Country.

“The Minister for education shall in consideration of an application for waiver pursuant to section I be guided by the nature of the proposed course of study for an undergraduate applicant, medical condition and the general national interest”, the Bill states, adding however that without prejudice to the generality of the provisions of this Act, any public officer whose children and or wards are undergoing basic and undergraduate education overseas immediately before the date when this Act comes into force shall be deemed to be doing so pursuant to a waiver granted by the Minister or this for education”, the Bill states..

How N100,000 changed the life of a street barber
By Ebun BABALOLA
Saturday, May 22, 2010

Uche Alagbaso, 32, a barber, had been hoping that one day, fortune would smile on him. He opened a shop owner 11 years ago hoping for success. Alagboso won a sum of N100,000 at the just concluded WAHL Barbing competition held at the Eko Hotel & Suits, Lagos.

According to him, “I heard the jingle on the radio and I decided to participate. This is my first time to participate in this competition since it started about 18 years ago. The entry came up in March and April and here I am with a sum of N100,000. “

Alagboso said things had been rough and unpleasant, especially when he picked the profession 11 years ago. With the expectation that things would turn in his favour, he shunned all negative advice that wouldn’t let him be what he wants to be.

His parents tried to discourage him from his barbing but his mind to become a professional and international barber of his generation was made up.

“I left my hometown just to earn a living here in Lagos. People say Lagos is like London but unfortunately, life has become so miserable that I hardly eat three square meal. This is the only profession I enjoy doing. When I started this profession, I’ve always believed that God would shower His mercies on me. “I’ve been faced with different challenges.

I’ve lived all my life here in Victoria Island, no friends, no relatives. I was living fro hand to mouth. But I thank God for giving me the ability to be a man today”, Uche said...

Hundreds flock to Nigeria in search of food

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) – Hundreds of Niger nationals, mostly womenand children, have flooded into neighbouring Nigeria in search of food, officials and residents said on Friday.capt.photo_1274472362594-1-0.jpg?x=213&y=142&xc=1&yc=1&wc=410&hc=273&q=85&sig=1d_6vQYZcNebsHqYL_qVuQ--

"We are aware of the recent influx of people from Niger into some parts of (southern) Katsina State," Sani Makana, the state agriculture commissioner told AFP by phone from the state capital Katsina.

The number of of Niger nationals in northern Katsina state, which shares a land border with Nigeria, has soared in the past two months, residents said.

Makana said some were so desperate they had been forced to beg door-to-door..

"It is a pathetic sight. They just have nothing to live on and have to beg to eat," said Katsina resident, Abubakar Shehu.

"When you ask them why they came here they tell you that they were starving in Niger... and would die if they stayed," Shehu said.

According to the United Nations around 7.8 million Nigeriens are in need of food, out of the around 10 million affected by a crisis in the Sahel region.

Many Niger men in Nigeria have turned their hand to selling water in order to eke out a living.

Vendors pushing two-wheeler carts laden with 25-litre (five-gallon) jerry cans have become a common sight in Katsina city, said resident Ibrahim Salihu.

A Nigerian immigration officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said there was little his officials could do to stop the influx.

"There is very little we can do... due to the porous nature of the over 1,000 kilometre (63 mile) border stretch," he said.

In anticipation of the influx, Katsina authorities have stockpiled grains for distribution, Makana said.

Niger's transitional government at the weekend announced the launch of a food distribution operation for nearly 1.5 million people facing severe shortages.

West African ministers also met on Wednesday in the Togolese capital of Lome to discuss the crisis, an official statement said.

Aliko Dangote bids for Arsenal FC

Nigerian billionaire enters battle for Arsenal

Ben MarlowOne of Africa’s richest men is plotting to buy a stake in Arsenal in amove that could trigger a full-blown takeover battle for the PremierLeague football club.

Aliko Dangote, a billionaire Nigerian industrialist, is in talks to buythe 16% stake being sold by Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith, the club’sfourth-largest shareholder. Dangote is understood to have registered hisinterest in buying the holding with Blackstone, the American financehouse that has been given the job of finding a buyer for the shares.

Bracewell-Smith’s stake is currently worth £96m, but she is seeking upto £160m for the shares. Her holding is key to the future ownership ofthe north London club.

Arsenal’s two biggest investors, Stan Kroenke, the American sportstycoon, and Alisher Usmanov, the Russian oligarch, are alsocontemplating buying the shares. If either of the two men were to buythe Bracewell-Smith holding, they would be forced to launch a fulltakeover offer for the club.

Arsenal, which has a market value of £606m, is one of a number ofPremier League clubs that could change hands this summer. Liverpool’sAmerican owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, have recently put theirclub up for sale.

Manchester United has attracted bid interest from a fan-based consortiumthat wants to wrest control from the Glazer family.

Dangote is a passionate football fan and has the wealth to compete withKroenke and Usmanov. Forbes magazine recently ranked him among theworld’s 500 richest people, with a fortune estimated at $2.5 billion(£1.7 billion). He has helped the Nigerian national football team withcash presents and has stood for the post of president of the Nigerianfootball association.

He recently celebrated his 53rd birthday with the purchase of aneight-seater Bombardier jet, regarded as one of the most sophisticatedprivate planes in the world.

He is the founder of the Dangote Group, a manufacturing empire thatstarted in the late 1970s as a cement importer and which now hasinterests ranging from sugar and flour to telecommunications and oil.

He is a close friend of Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo.Until recently he was the head of the Nigerian stock exchange but wasforced to step down after falling out with Africa Petroleum, one ofNigeria’s biggest companies, which accused Dangote of manipulating itsshare price, a charge he has appealed against.

The Nigerian tycoon is thought to have made it on to a shortlist ofabout 10 investors, drawn up by Blackstone.

The holding was put up for sale earlier this year. It was inherited byBracewell-Smith’s husband Sir Charles Bracewell-Smith and transferred toher name in 2005.

The stake has attracted interest from investors in Asia, the MiddleEast, eastern Europe and America. It is expected to be sold for about£15,000 a share, against a current market price of £10,000.

Sources close to Kroenke say he is the favourite to buy the holding. TheAmerican, who currently owns 29.9%, the largest single shareholding inthe club, ultimately wants control and has told Blackstone he plans tobid.
Kroenke is also more popular with the Arsenal directors than Usmanov, who owns a 26% stake through his Red & White Holdings investmentvehicle but has failed to gain a seat on the club’s board.

A buyer could be selected before the emergency budget on June 22, whichis expected to put up capital gains tax on certain types of investment. Arise in the tax rate could cost Bracewell-Smith millions of pounds.

Foreign ownership of football clubs is under increased scrutiny becauseof the large debts many clubs have been saddled with after takeovers byforeign investors.

Some proprietors, such as Chelsea’s Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, have slashed debts recently while others — Aston Villa’s American ownerRandy Lerner, for example — have striven to avoid becoming dependent onbank financing.

The sale of a stake in Arsenal, which is forecast to make a pre-taxprofit this year of £56m, will not be helped by growing speculation thatCesc Fabregas, its star midfielder, could move to Barcelona thissummer.

Both Arsenal and Blackstone declined to comment...

For most being alone, is a kind of punishment... many find solitary confinement to be the worst....

And why is this? Because, people have learned to use others as a prop for their ego, and without the other there, the ego cannot be crystalized.

You seek out the community because it reinforces your fantasies about yourself, no matter how crazy they are, and because they are fantasies without the other there, they will cease to exist.

This is why being alone is so difficult because without constant reinforcement, the false self cannot maintain its existence. It dissappears. Poof !

Man is born alone, man dies alone, and there is nothing he can do to escape his aloneness. Fleeing to groups, stadiums full of people, sporting events, concerts, all they can do is distract for a few moments. And for many this only heightens the feeling of aloneness that they have.

Unless a person can be alone, they cannot find happiness in any relationship, because those relationships will only represent and escape from the fear of being alone, and a dependency. And relationships based on fear can never succeed.

Only when one experiences the nature of their aloness are they capable of loving another without fear.

For in the depths of your being, in deep meditation, in the center of your aloneness, you will discover, the eternal. And int that momement you will be free.

I lift up my eyes to the hills .Where does my help come from ? My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth .

THE SILENT SERMON

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services
regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit
him.

It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting
before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his pastor's visit, the
man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and
waited.

The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence,
he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After
some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a
brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone
then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's
flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its
fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. .

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The pastor glanced
at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up,
picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the
fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth
of the burning coals around it.

As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running
down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the
firey sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday".

BABANGIDA LEAVE POLICTICS ALONE !

Poor attendance mars IBB’s book launch

Eminent personalities yesterday failed to turn up as expected at a book launch on ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida.

Governors, ministers, traditional rulers, top businessmen and many others personalities across the country shunned the event expected to boost IBB’s political campaign and public rating.

However, Chief Tony Eze the chief launcher, a big time businessman during the military era donated N10 million in support of the book entitled: "Impression and Facts: Nigeria under General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, 1985-1993."

Notable personalities present other that IBB himself included former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji M. D. Yusuf and former Information Minister, Chief Alex Akinyele.

The Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris and his counterpart in Katsina sent representatives to the ceremony that was attended by scores of not-too-privileged Nigerians. The book launch was held at the International Conference Centre in the federal capital city.

Academia and members of some civil society groups contributed to the nine-chapter, 342-page book edited by Mr. Abubakar Siddique Mohammed, the Director, Centre for Democratic Development, Research and Training, Zaria.

According to the editor, the book is an effort to analyze facts and re-assess events of the IBB era that many critics have deliberately misconstrued while others fail to appreciate or understand them.

"With such warped impressions, a rational review and assessment to establish exactly where we are coming from, and why, and where we are going, and why, is just impossible. With the political leadership of the past reduced to either demons, or angels, saints or sinners, the good and the evil, a balanced, rational and realistic assessment of this past is made very difficult".

"Society just flounders around and sinks into recriminations and denunciations, which serve no useful purpose in grasping what actually happened in the past, in mastering the present and developing the capacity for determining the future", he added.

He added that the myths created around Babangida and other military leaders could only divert attention from their genuine achievements.

DEAF%20PICS%20Pixxxxxxx_thumb.jpg
padding-right: 5px;"">The church choir

Dada ALADELOKUN, Kunle AKINRINADE and Boniface ALANWOKO

Not a few men would yell, ‘over my dead body’, if invited to such a church, where talking is forbidden, so to say. Indeed, such men will hurry out of the auditorium if perchance they find themselves there. The church, which is located at 106, Apata Street, Somolu, Lagos State, is not the typical place of worship spread around the Lagos metropolis.

No, it is not the kind of place where blazing public address system (PAS) inundates residents’ saturated eardrums with service proceedings. There, occupants of the front pew do so with no special order. Therefore, the congregation are not under the seeming hypnotic influence of any pastor, let alone importune their "Papa" with miracle requests.

There was no servile deference or trembling aides. What’s more; no one talks; it’s a church specially established for the deaf and dumb. It is named, The Christian Mission for the Deaf.

These reporters were there last Sunday to witness and also have a taste of their devotional service. It turned an interesting moment with the men and women, young and old, who heartily worshipped their creator without regard for their physical incapacitation. The glee was perceptible as well as pleasantly infectious.

The street that hosts the uncommon sanctuary is like every other busy route in the metropolis. The ubiquitous commercial motorbike riders and roadside artisans had their own share of the hustle and bustle of the street like the adjoining ones.

Strategically located, a sign post welcomes the guest into the modest premises of the church, a bungalow. Attached to it on the right is an apartment with a chalk board reserved obviously for Sunday school programmes. And like in such typical set-ups, at the back of the main structure are administrative offices among others..

That members of the church were imbued with ample social etiquette was obvious as, with toothy smiles and frantic gesticulations, some of them who either stood or sat in groups for snappy discussions in front of the church, welcomed the reporters and other guests into the premises.

The reporters were immediately ushered into the church auditorium by some elders of the church at about 10 a.m. when the service had barely started. A handful of members were already seated. By 10.30 a.m. the number had increased such that the congregation were jostling for seats.

In the words of a leading female member of the church, Sister Bunmi James, the situation arose because the day’s service was a special one. Hear her through an interpreter: "We normally have between 150 to 200 worshippers on a normal service day and 400 to 500 on special service like the one holding today." Soon, it was time for choir ministration and as the choristers stepped out in their black robes to render special numbers, the reporters’ curiousity was aroused as to how the songs would be let out.

But a cow without tail takes solace in God who wards gluttonous flies off its body. The group, comprising four men and a female member, dazzled the audience and the agitated newsmen with popular hymns such as "Abraham’s blessings are mine"; "Something more than gold" and "The spirit of God is in the heart of men." But it was with their peculiar sign language.

Next was the sermon by Pastor Abiodun Folaji, a visiting evangelist from the Ilaro branch of the church. He was a spectacle of sorts as he mounted the pulpit to deliver a sermon on the reason for the birth of the church. As interpreted to the reporters by Mr. Toyin Joseph Ameho whose parents are also leading members of the church, Folaji said, drawing home his lecture in sign language and gesture: "The church is not about how magnificent the building is, but the people who worship in it. Therefore, we must not for any reason leave the church because of the current harsh economic situation. Look at the elders of this church; they are not rich too but the Lord has always been sustaining them."

The pastor was a sight to behold as his restive legs hopped from one spot to the other on the pulpit while his hands did the talking. Only God knows how many kilometres he must have covered on the altar while the sermon lasted. His roving eyeballs maintained constant romance with pages of his Bible from where he quoted copiously for members of the congregation who hanged on his lips with occasional nods and sighs. Spell-bound, one of the reporters heaved a deep sigh and declared in a hushed tone: "Ah, God is great!"

As soon as the sermon was over, the offering collectors took turns to perform their role for the day. With joy, members made their offerings while the service was brought to an end after an announcement made by the purse keeper of the church, Brother Samuel Ebinom, who brought the good news to the congregation that a female member of the church had just been delivered of a healthy baby girl. As would be expected, the heartening news triggered off spontaneous wild jubilation by the corgregation.

It was time for chat with some members of the church and the heart-rending stories of many of them would sure make not a few able-bodied men around splutter words of exaltation to their creator for the opportunity to be what they are. Pa Amos Akeju, a 65-year-old from Imota, a Lagos suburb, who incidentally is the chairman of the church council, shared his story through Toyin: "I was not born deaf. It all happened that while I was in school, my parents could not afford to pay my school fees and I thought that I should help myself out by working on the farm in order to raise some money. Unfortunately, while working on the farm with some of my mates, an argument ensued and I was slapped by one of them; that was how I became a deaf."

But how did Akeju overcome the daunting challenges of educating himself? Hear him further: "I lost my parents at a young age but when I met the late founder of this church, Dr. Andrew Foster, he advised me to study in order to become a better person in life. Therefore, I took some correspondence courses and at Foster’s instance, I left for Gallaudet University, Washington, United States of America (USA) - the only university for the deaf in the world - in 1980. There, I studied for a degree course in Elementary/Special Education and back home, I taught for over three decades in various public schools before I retired as a vice principal of the State Grammar School, Surulere, Lagos some years ago."

For the Amehos, whose 25-year-old son, Toyin, served as an interpreter during the chat, the story of their 52-year-old matriarch, Victoria, was riveting. The reporters’ jaws dropped in pity when she recalled how a drug she took led to her loss of hearing. "I became deaf when I was about eight years old. I was given a particular drug at the clinic, which subsequently impaired my hearing. When my teachers spoke to me, I could no longer hear well anymore. Someone later advised my parents to send me to Wesley School for the Deaf and I also attended Victory College, Ikeja, Lagos State for my secondary education," she said.

Her husband, Oliver, however, explained that he was born a deaf: "I was born deaf and as a child, I wasn’t worried about anything. I attended Wesley School and after my secondary education, I went to a technical school. I worked at the Federal Ministry of Works where I retired in 2007. I met my wife in this church and we are happy as a couple," he said, smiling.

The 62-year-old beautiful secretary of the church council, Sister James, also shared her experience with the reporters: "I’m the only one with hearing challenges among my siblings but my parents took care of me very well. They ensured that I received the best of education. I worked for several years with the defunct Nigeria Airways before I retired some years ago and I am blessed with a daughter who, by God’s grace, is not suffering from any hearing problem."

Akeju went down memory lane on when and why the church was established by its late missionary founder about 50 years ago: "The church was established in 1960 in Ibadan by the late Dr. Andrew Foster, a deaf missionary who came to Nigeria from the United States where he had already established its headquarters, but the Lagos branch was established in 1970. The church came into existence in order to impart knowledge to the deaf in the language they understand - the sign language-rather than their native tongue which could not help them to read and learn very well.

He also seized the opportunity to explain the stubborn headache troubling the church which he said, required the assistance of members of the public. Exuding sobriety, he said: "We want assistance from public-spirited individuals so that we can take this place to greater heights. Our urgent need now is how to improve on the facilities here. What we are getting from members as contributions and special levies are not enough to carry out the task because our members are barely surviving on their meagre income that is not enough to take care of their immediate needs, let alone give substantial offering in the church.

"We want to renovate our building and we have already done the building plan. The total budget according to our builders is N100million, apart from the equipment needed for the rehabilitation of this building. The new building will have a school, a new church auditorium and a vocational centre."

Their condition apart, members of the church are due to file out to celebrate the 50

th anniversary of the church and yards of Aso-ebi are already exchanging hands in preparation for the event billed to take place on June 25.

As the reporters made their way out of the church at about 2.20 p.m. after flowing words of appreciation from their hosts, it was time to ponder on how it feels to be in the shoes of their hosts who, despite their ill fate, still find time to congregate every Sunday for supplications to God. It was clearly a sweet moment with the special ones who appeared to have swallowed hook, line and sinker, the biblical injunction that says: In any situation, give thanks to God!

Call girl breaks waist running from clients in two on one Orgy that went bad, very Bad

After an all night sex, call girl jumps from four-storey hotel to escape from insatiable clients. Adelani Adepegba and Fidelis Soriwei report.

In the world of a girl identified as Eyiye, one of the major things that count is money. And it does not matter if she has to exploit her body to get it. This she had been doing for sometime until last Monday when she encountered two friends who literally took her through the valley of the shadow of death, right in a hotel room in Abuja .

Eyiye, from Edo State was one of the hordes of girls who came to the Federal Capital Territory believing they could make ends meet by soliciting for patrons at roadsides for a fee.

Eyiye who claimed to be a student of an unnamed higher institution in the FCT was approached by Alphonsus Nnadi, 26, and Tony Agbo, 25, for an all night sexual intercourse on Sunday evening, and after negotiations, struck a bargain.

The friends agreed to pay her N8,000 and she went with them to the Capital Lake Hotel, Jabi, where they got a room on the third floor.

The two men descended on Eyiye and had their fill of sex, with each of them doing four rounds till day-break, according to their statements to the police. In the morning, the girl was tired and weak from the long night, but Agbo was not yet done with her as he allegedly insisted on having one more round, which Eyiye felt she could not endure. She protested that she was weak and hungry, but Agbo did not see that as a problem.

He offered to get her meat-pie and a drink. Nnadi, who was also tired from the exertions of the night, asked his friend to lock the room and go with the key "because the girl may sneak away with my expensive phone if I slept off."

After Agbo had left to fetch the food, Eyiye asked Nnadi to get hot water from the bathroom to massage her raw private part. Immediately he left, she wrapped the thick bed blankets around herself and dived through the window to the ground, breaking her waist and sustaining other injuries. Hotel staff and sympathisers rushed to her aid and called in the police who assisted in taking her to the General Hospital, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Eyiye in an interview explained that she decided to take the risk of jumping from the third floor of the hotel when she heard Nnadi and Agbo discussing how to kill her and cut out her private part for rituals. She said they were speaking in "Rivers (State) language." She complained that she was only paid N4000 instead of the N8000 they agreed to give her. "I decided to jump because they wanted to kill me for ritual. I heard one of then telling someone on the phone that I have the type of vagina they were looking for," she alleged.

Nnadi who hailed from Imo State had a different version of the incident when he spoke to our correspondents on Wednesday at the Life Camp Police Station where he and his friend were being detained. He explained that he and Agbo had a cordial evening with Eyiye when they took her to the room.

"I offered to get her a job if she would quit being a harshie (harlot) and I even allowed her to use my phone. If I was a ritualist, would I have done that? I believe it was because she heard me speaking on phone with a client about a real estate deal running to N45m. Maybe it was what the girl heard and she thought I was a ritual killer. I swear to God am a Christian, it is quite unfortunate that this happened, but I have no intention of using the girl for ritual," he defended himself.

Agbo from Benue State, said what got him involved with Eyiye was his wet clothes which prevented him from going to work early. "I was sticking around waiting for my clothes to dry when I decided to have another round with her. It's a lie that we wanted to kill her because I came back voluntarily when Nnadi called me on phone from the eatery when I went to get snacks for her when the police came after she had jumped out of the room. Am happy she didn't die because that would have been a different thing altogether," he said.

Policemen at the station stated that preliminary investigation indicated that what transpired between the trio was a normal sexual transaction which however went awry.

For now, Eyiye is nursing her raw and bruised parts while her erstwhile lovers rue their misdeed.

At least 158 people are feared dead after a passenger jet overshot a runway, crashed into a valley and burst into flames in southern India on Saturday morning, officials said.

Rescue teams had recovered 127 bodies at the wreckage site outside Mangalore International Airport by mid-afternoon, Air India Director Anup Srivastava told CNN.

Eight of the 166 people onboard Air India Flight IX-812 survived the crash and were taken to hospitals, he said.

Survivors told CNN's sister network that they jumped out of the plane after it crashed, seconds before it burst into flames.

Rescue workers struggled to reach the crash site in a hilly wooded area beyond the runway, the network said. Smoke from the plane also hampered rescue efforts, CNN-IBN reported.

Abhay Pathak, a regional manager for Air India based in Dubai, said there were 160 passengers on board the plane and six crew members.

Of the passengers, 32 were women, 105 were men, 19 were children and four were infants, he said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced financial aid for the victims Saturday and canceled scheduled events at his residence to mark the end of his first year in office.

The government said families would receive 200,000 rupees, or about $4,260, for each dead passenger and 50,000 rupees, or $1,064, for every injured passenger.

The airline has offered relatives of crash victims in the United Arab Emirates free passage to India, Pathak said, and about 20 people have accepted the offer.

Srivastava said India Air was investigating the crash and trying to confirm casualties.

The pilot did not report any problems before landing the plane, the civil aviation ministry said.

The Mangalore airport reported calm wind, no rain and a visibility of 6 km at the time of the crash, the ministry said.

Boeing released a statement saying the company would send a team to provide technical assistance to Indian authorities during their investigation.

The 8,000-foot runway at Mangalore's airport opened in 2006, and officials say it has an end-safety area of about 90 meters.

Air India has released the following telephone numbers to learn more information about the crash:

The tragic incident occurred at Iyana Ilogbo, Sango Ota, Ogun State. The suspects advertisement The suspect, Abdul Adekile (not real name) 25, was said to have come back home that fateful day, to behold the victim, Musibau Olapade, on top of his wife, Bunmi (not real name) and decided to bring the amourous relationship to a tragic end. “I left home for work at about 7.00 am and came back home to give my wife some money to prepare food, only to find the door securely locked. A Malawi gay couple was sentenced to 14 years each in jail on Thursday after being found guilty of sodomy and indecency earlier this week, in a trial viewed as a test case for gay rights in the country.

An outraged Madonna ripped a Malawi judge for sentencing an engaged gay couple couple to 14 years of hard labor - based strictly on their sexual orientation.

"I am shocked and saddened by the decision made by the Malawian court, which sent two innocent men to prison," Madonna said Friday in a statement posted on her web site

According to Reuters, the couple, Steven Monjeza, 26, and 20-year-old Tiwonge Chimbalanga, were arrested after they got engaged in a traditional ceremony in late December.

"I sentence these two ... to a maximum sentence because I want us to stop Malawian sons and daughters from copying the same-sex marriages which are un-Malawian and not in our culture and religious beliefs," Chief Resident Magistrate Nyakwawa Uisiwausiwa said.

"This is the first case of its kind in Malawi ... this is the worst case of its kind," he added.

Major donors to aid-dependent Malawi have condemned what they called the abuse of human rights in the southern African nation, particularly a crackdown on gay rights, and warned that abuses could affect budget support.

Rights groups Amnesty International, on Tuesday called for the immediate and unconditional release of the couple, saying their human rights have been flagrantly violated.

Malawi gay activist, Udule Mwakasungura, said the sentence may dent the country's image.

"Malawi is a signatory to treaties that protect minority rights and this sentence is unfortunate and may affect our global standing on human rights," he said.steven-monjeza-and-tiwonge-chimbalanga1.jpg
Homosexuality in Africa has become a contentious issue in recent months after a Ugandan lawmaker proposed a bill including the death penalty for some acts, the arrest of the Malawian couple, and a police raid on a gay wedding in Kenya earlier this year.

Dozens of people packed the court to hear the sentencing. Police closed roads around the building and a nearby bank was closed as more than a thousand people descended on the court.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.s-MARK-ZUCKERBERG-large.jpg

Facebook's new privacy policies have sparked a user backlash, with over ten thousand users organizing a coordinated exodus from the site on Quit Facebook Day..

But that's not the only thing troubling the 26-year-old social media tycoon. Zuckerberg is now facing allegations of securities fraud regarding the out-of-court settlement Facebook made with a rival company whose owners claim Zuckerberg stole their source code.

These allegations have followed Zuckerberg since his Harvard days, when he was hired by a student-run dating website called Harvard Connection (now called ConnectU), which at the time was similar to Zuckerberg's startup TheFacebook. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, the creators of ConnectU, brought suit against Facebook in 2003. They settled for a reported $65 million in 2008 and turned ConnectU over to Facebook.

(The case's shady details have become something of a legend, spawning a book (Accidental Billionaires) and an upcoming film called The Social Network.)

The Winklevoss twins are now trying to appeal their settlement on the grounds that they were shortchanged by Facebook. VentureBeat has the details:

The ConnectU cofounders are arguing that Facebook executives and lawyers presented the cash-and-stock offer's value as $65 million, relying on a valuation of $15 billion that Microsoft paid in 2007 when buying preferred shares in the company. The settlement, however, was to be paid in common shares, not preferred shares, which Facebook itself valued at roughly 75 percent less for the purposes of calculating taxes on stock-based compensation -- cutting the settlement's offer roughly in half.

Yello:Mtn makes facebook f.r.e.e !

MTN has rolled out a free way to access Facebook via mobile phones, through 0.facebook.com.

The operator says the 0.facebook.com site is lightweight and optimised for speed. MTN's standard data charges do not apply for the site since it has free mobile browsing.

This site does not have graphics or photos, and 0.facebook.com's pages have been designed for performance on MTN's network. Standard data charges will apply when users leave the site to view photos.

Says MTN's chief marketing officer Santie Botha: “In the true spirit of innovation and bringing our customers convenience – including the latest in technology at affordable rates – MTN has collaborated with Facebook on this venture to ensure our customers are among the first to benefit from this social service and communication offering for free.”.

“We are always looking to work with innovative companies to provide simple and fast mobile access to Facebook across the world,” says Henri Moissinac, head of Mobile Business, Facebook. “Thanks to our collaboration with MTN, people will now be able to access Facebook for free through 0.facebook.com.”

MTN takes uncapped plunge

African mobile operator MTN will release an uncapped Internet offering to its customers from next month.

The offering will come as a surprise to many in the industry, after both MTN and Vodacom stated an uncapped service is not a feasible decision for the mobile companies. Mobile operators lagged behind when a flurry of fixed-line Internet providers recently burst onto the market with SA's first uncapped offering.

MTN has noted that mobile data needs to be approached with a sustainable view.

MTN and Vodacom have ploughed significant amounts of money into fibre countrywide, which both companies hope to exploit soon. According to MTN, the company's recovery on the investments it has made in data will take time to recoup, which is why the current offerings are priced as they are.

However, MTN seems to have trumped its competitors by bringing the uncapped offering to market in time for the Fifa World Cup starting next month.

MTN customers will now be able to get their hands on MTN's Unlimited Lite package for R749, and the Unlimited Pro package for R1 999. While both packages are uncapped in terms of data use, there is a fair use policy, which throttles speeds down to 128kbps after a certain amount of bandwidth is used.

In the case of the Lite package, speeds are throttled after 3GB of data has been used, and the Pro package will be throttled after 10GB.

MTN has also responded to potential competition from third mobile operator Cell C, which announced it will deploy an HSPA+ network for high-speed mobile Internet this year. Cell C's network will be deployed at 900MHz, a stronger signal than traditional 3G.

MTN says it is now piloting a similar solution.

"You want recharge ? " this is not MTN or Glo or any of the other networks This is the new Recharge sold on highways in the Nations Capital.
The harsh economic realities of today are forcing many Nigerians into engaging in all kinds of activities to put food on the table, irrespective of the risks that may be involved.

With white collar jobs getting increasingly difficult to come by, any available 'job' appears to be worth doing as long as it fetches some money to take care of daily needs. So it is the case for an army of youths in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, who have found a rewarding trade in marketing aphrodisiacs.

You would think they are advertising GSM recharge cards when you hear "Oga recharge." You take a second look at the fellow standing before you and realise that he is not displaying any recharge card.

What is he recharging? Oh, our man is marketing aphrodisiacs! Aphrodisiacs are drugs meant to 'power' the male libido (simply put, to enhance sexual performance).

The online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, defines an aphrodisiac as a "substance that increases sexual desire."

Burantashi (literally "penis get up") is a native Hausa-Fulani powder derived from the bark of the African tree Pausinystalia yohimbe.

Burantashi is used as a food additive to barbecued meat (suya) in Nigeria, especially the Northern parts. It is claimed to have aphrodisiac and penile-erection enhancing properties.
Another common aphrodisiac is called Paraga usually used by people from the south and mixed with alocohlic Gin drinks and other herbs like indian hemp or marijuana.

The name is derived from Aphrodite, "the Greek goddess of sensuality and love." For instance, the online website mentions one of the drugs identified by modern medicine as an aphrodisiac which serves the purpose earlier highlighted.

"Throughout history, many foods, drinks, and behaviours have had a reputation for making sex more attainable and/or pleasurable.

"However, from a historical and scientific standpoint, the alleged results may have been mainly due to mere belief by their users that they would be effective," it notes.

In Abuja, there is a boom in the sale of aphrodisiacs, propelled by hawkers, mainly males. They are everywhere -in the traffic, pubs, gardens, shopping centres, government office premises, car parks, around religious buildings and more.

The drugs sold in Abuja by these hawkers are mostly of Asian origin, particularly China.

However, there are other local, "made in Nigeria" concoctions, powdery substances and roots that are marketed by our sex "experts."

With a tongue as sharp, convincing and entertaining as that of a parrot, our buran tashi (a substance capable of stimulating the male organ) sellers somehow hoodwink their potential clients into buying large quantities of the drugs.

They use all tricks in the book, including working on the psychology of a client. They know that a lot of people will usually not like to be seen discussing sex publicly, let alone buying performance enhancing drugs in the open.

So, a hawker walks close to a potential client (e.g. while trying to park his car) and announces 'recharge' in a low tone.

Just as he makes a mental calculation of what our hawker is saying, the latter switches swiftly to sign language. With a clenched fist, he lifts his hand up and down (suggesting a nodding male organ), adding with a grin, "Power; e dey give power!"

Grateful that the client is the listening type, he launches into an advertisement of all manner of drugs usually packed in a small bag, swearing by his grandfather's grave that they can perform wonders.

"You see this one (some powdery substance); just mix it with Akamu (pap) or tea and drink it. Try it and you will ask for it again.

"I have another one; this one is like power horse, very strong, very powerful medicine. Which one will you pick? He goes on and on.

While some people diplomatically ignore the hawkers, there are those who buy a few of the drugs.

Hawkers who hang around relaxation spots in the city are well aware of the effect of alcohol on the human brain.

Alcohol effect can come in form of a consumer displaying unusual excitement and the hawkers just calculate that he is likely to listen to sexual communication.

One of them, Isa Rabe, plies his trade between the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority and a popular eatery in Area 11, Garki, in the city centre.

Rabe claims that his clients include a long list of senior civil servants, politicians, law enforcement agents and commercial motorists.

He vouches for the efficacy of his products, which he claims act like intoxicants on users.

"I have been selling these medicines since 2001 and the market is good; I sell up to 13 packets of different brands on a good day.

"But, weekends, especially Friday evenings and Saturdays, are our best market days.

"A lot of merriment takes place during the weekends and the desire to 'relax' increases on such days," Rabe says.

Getting people who had taken these drugs to share their experiences was tasking, but a motorist, Adamu Silas, claimed that those who took the substances gave conflicting accounts of their effect.

"I know someone who takes one of the medicines and he says that it has been boosting his sex life.

"Some will tell you that it is all lies because you don't know whether it is the drug that is working or you are just yourself", Silas says.

One anonymous respondent tells this reporter that he once took a particular root sold to him by a hawker and it "acted well on my system."

"There are so many fake products out there and you have to be careful about what you buy or take the risk of administering on yourself," the respondent states.

Health experts however warn about the dangers in buying drugs from roadside hawkers.

A Garki-based medical doctor, Dr. Daniel Yakubu, says that many people endanger their lives by patronising hawkers in the belief they have "wonder drugs."

He says, "Anybody who buys any drug or engages in self-medication without proper medical advice is abusing the drug.

"The danger is that you risk your life; some drugs cannot be prescribed unless a patient is certified to be under certain condition.

"You need to examine the patient; conduct tests and be well aware of the medical history before drugs are recommended."

He adds that those marketing aphrodisiacs and other drugs in Abuja may be illiterate or barely literate people "who know next to nothing about the chemical components of the drugs they sell to you."

"Are these the people any sensible person will rely on for a supposed cure? When were these drugs manufactured? What is their expiry date; what is the condition under which a patient can be administered such dugs?

"These are all questions that the hawker by the roadside may not be in a position to answer," Yakubu says.

Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control have had running battles with some of these hawkers in the city but they always find a way of selling the drugs.

For visitors to Abuja, "recharge" may not mean GSM recharge cards; ask if in doubt. If you want to sleep well tonight dont bother to buy remember the "man" from birnin kebbi Dauda the sexy guy who took an aphrodisiac and was known to have spent a whole week with his you know what on full recharge post paid ! Have a lovely weekend !

C' River: Female teacher, 10 men detained in one cell …Petitions Army Command over illegal detention, torture
From JUDEX OKORO, Calabar
.
A female school teacher, Mrs. Etta- Bassey Ephraim, was made to pass through the valley of death as she was detained in a military cell for eight hours with 10 men. Some of the men, she said, displayed signs of lunacy and violence, sending shivers down her spine.

Narrating her ordeals to Daily Sun, Mrs. Ephraim, a History at Army Day Secondary School, Ikot Ansa, Calabar, Cross River State, stated that she was so terribly frightened and depressed that the male inmates could rape her at any slightest opportunity.

She said, “ I was shocked to the bone marrow when I was put in the same cell with these hefty men; I asked myself what offence did I commit to warrant such torture, human debasement and treatment from the Commanding Officer whose duty it is to ensure my protection in the barracks. But thank God that after eight gory hours, my husband and my principal were able to effect my release from the gallows,” adding, the experience has worsened my health condition because it was the biggest nightmare I have ever had in my life.”

In a petition, entitled, “Petition against the Commanding Officer, 146, Battalion, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar, for an illegal detention in military guardroom,” and addressed to the General Officer Commanding 82, Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Cross River State House of Assembly and Commissioner for education, the petitioner stated that since she joined the secondary education board and command school for over 14-years now, she had never had any case of indiscipline or problem whatsoever in the various schools served and, therefore, wondered why she could be subjected to such a treatment.

Mrs. Ephraim, who described her detention as illegal confinement and breach of fundamental human rights by the military authorities, is demanding an unreserved apology and that the Commander of 146, Battalion, Eburutu barracks, Calabar, Lt.Col.K.N. Garuba, be cautioned for an alleged misbehaviour and inhuman treatment meted out to her for no just cause.

According to her, the incident that led to her detention was as a result of her trying to intervene in a matter between one of her colleagues, Mrs. Theresa Egrinya, and the Commanding Officer, Lt.Col. Garuba, on Saturday, March 2, 2010 at about 10:45 am in the school compound. Explaining further, she said, “We were in school with some of my colleagues for a re-scheduled examination for students. After the examination, we were outside the school, discussing the Army Day African Cup of Nations, a football tournament of the school when a motorbike pulled up in front of us.”

Looking agitated, the rider started shouting at one of the teachers, Mrs. Theresa Egrinya, saying, “madam you sent your son to knock me down, pack out of my barracks, I own this barracks.” On hearing this, she claimed, the madam fell on her knees and pleaded for mercy and in the process the school principal joined in pleading for leniency, an action which further infuriated the officer.

“Not yet satisfied, the army officer went ahead to order me out of the barracks for daring to interfere in the matter. And before I could get my things out of my office, he ordered one of the soldiers on guard to escort me to pack my things and lock me up in the guardroom.

In an emotion laden tone, she therefore, called on the relevant military authorities and the Cross River House of Assembly to intervene in the matter and caution Garuba against such action.

The federal government is to set up a committee to ascertain whether a criminal charge can be sustained against former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, over his alleged mismanagement of the $12.4 billion windfall from the sale of crude oil during the first gulf war.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke, made this known in a letter he sent to a group of civil society organisations who demanded the prosecution of the former military leader based on the findings of the Pius Okigbo Panel.

In his letter, dated 12th May 2010, Mr Adoke acknowledged the receipt of the Okigbo report from the group and commended their effort in making available to him a signed copy of the report.

"As appropriate, I shall set up a Committee that will confirm the authenticity of the said report and also review the allegations and recommendations contained therein, with a view to ascertaining whether these allegations can sustain a criminal charge," he said .

NEXT, last week, exclusively reported that the Attorney General was already studying the content of the document with a view to making a more informed reaction on behalf of the federal government as soon as possible.

Speaking for the coalition, the Executive Director of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Adetokunbo Mumuni, welcomed the commitment of the new administration to prosecute the former military leader on the basis of the evidence contained in the Okigbo report.

Mr Mumuni, who commended the steps already taken by the Attorney General, however urged the government to "accelerate action to ensure that the case is diligently and effectively prosecuted" adding that

"Pursuing this case to a logical and successful conclusion will show that our government can do things differently when it comes to the fight against corruption in this country," he said.

"This would also provide effective remedy for the countless victims of high level official corruption in the country" he said.

Mr Mumuni urged Mr Adoke to involve civil society and the United Nations in the work of the committee, to ensure that ‘justice is not only done but seen to be done.' "We stand ready to offer full support and assistance to the authorities in the prosecution of suspected perpetrators of the $12.4bn scam," Mr Mumuni said. "We believe that a successful prosecution of the case is a key step in improving the overall governance environment in the country."

The latest letter from the office of the Minister of Justice came weeks after he replied several petitions by the coalition which, in a letter dated April 7, had given Mr Adoke a two-week ultimatum to commence action on the initial petition or face legal actions.

Mr Adoke then requested for the provision of the authentic and signed Okigbo report, assuring the groups that he would deal with the matter once he received the signed original copy of the Okigbo report. The groups subsequently, on the May 5, forwarded the original 352-page report to him.

The groups debunked reports that the report was missing as reported during the administration of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, noting that it had remained in the custody of the government as a white paper. What has been missing is "the political will by successive governments to act decisively on the report," the group said.

The Okigbo report

The Okigbo panel was set up in 1994 by the late former head of state, Sani Abacha, to investigate how the $12.4 billion oil windfall earned from the sale of crude oil by Nigeria during the first Gulf War was spent. The report claims, in part, that "the Dedication and Special Accounts had become a parallel budget for the Presidency.

The decision as to what expenditure items to be financed out of these dedicated accounts was made by the President alone. For example, the accounts had been utilised to defray an assortment of expenses that could not in any way be described as priority such as: $2.92 million to make a documentary film on Nigeria: $18.30 million to purchase TV/Video for the Presidency; $23.98 million for staff welfare in the Presidency; $.99 million for travels of the First Lady abroad; and $59.72 million for security".

The report went on to state that, "The approved budget for the federation did not reflect the receipts into the Dedication and other Special Accounts; that the balances kept in these accounts were not included in the Federation Account, a practice which violated the fundamental precepts of the federal fiscal relations in Nigeria, and that in a number of cases, there were significant variations between the amounts approved for payment and the actual disbursements made, without any further explanation from the documents supplied."

Following the first petition on the missing $12.4b oil windfall, Mr Babangida, through his spokesperson, Kazeem Afegbua responded that the former military President "was not indicted by the Okigbo Report", and that much of the funds were concentrated on infrastructural development of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja..

Mr Babangida had also, in a recent interview, demanded that his accusers produce evidence of any mismanagement against him.

Signatories to the recent petition were the directors of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP); Women Advocates and Documentation Centre, (WARDC); Access to Justice, (AJ); and Committee for Defence of Human Rights, (CDHR). Others are the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, (CISLAC); Partnership for Justice, (PFJ); Human and Environmental Development Agenda, (HEDA) etc.
