Notice to Nigerian men If you want more than one wife marry more than one wife .Simple Stop this cheating !
Hugh Hefner has some choice words for Tiger Woods and Jesse James.

As previously mentioned, Hef celebrated his 84th birthday over the weekend with main squeeze Crystal Harris in Las Vegas.

Asked by Page Six what he thought of the married cheater, Hef said. "When you get married, you make a commitment. I had a lot of girlfriends, but it's not the same as cheating. I don't cheat. I am very open about what I do . . . Sandra Bullock's husband looks like a real creep. I think that when you are in a relationship, you should be honest. The real immorality of infidelity is the lying."

He also talked to Las Vegas columnist Norm:

Does he think golfer Tiger Woods can overcome his playboy transgressions ?

"He can if he wants to. But this whole idea that it's a sex addiction is a copout. Some people become obsessed with sex, but it's not like an alcohol or drug addiction. He did it because he could get away with it."

It sounds an impossible challenge: to make love every day for a month. But a series of studies have found that as well as bringing you closer together, it could help improve your well being. SARAH KAVANAGH, 31, a project co-ordinator, and her husband Colin, 40, a builder, from Cheshire, decided to try it. So how did they fare? Sarah says:

On the eve of the 12th anniversary of our first date, I told my husband Colin that I'd got him a very special gift that would remind us both just how much we still mean to each other.

As he tried to guess what it might be I assured him that this was something far more meaningful than a weekend away or a blown-up photograph from our wedding album.

His gift was, in fact, to make love with me every day for the following month.

Happy bedfellows: Sarah and Colin Kavanagh wanted to revive their romance

Colin's immediate reaction, just as I'd hoped, was to look like a man who'd been told he'd won the Lottery.

But almost immediately his face then fell.

'We used to have sex every day as a matter of course,' he said grumpily. 'Now you're offering it up as a gift and I'm supposed to be grateful?'

This really wasn't what I'd expected, having just offered love on request to the man I married seven years ago and who is always bending my ear that we don't do it enough. Somehow my well-meant offer had suddenly brought us to the brink of a row.

I'd come up with the idea because, in common with so many couples, in recent years lovemaking had been relegated in my agenda.

Unlike the heady days when Colin and I first met, now there is always something else that takes precedence - from work to domestic chores and even the simple pleasure of a full night's sleep.

When we met, I was 19 and Colin ten years older - the sexual attraction was mutual and instant. For the first few months, our passionate love life defined us, but as months turned to years and we got engaged and then married, things inevitably changed.

Over time, familiarity, the stresses of work and day-to-day life and the fact my sex drive just isn't what it used to be have combined to dampen the passion we once took for granted.

Colin was 'delighted' with Sarah's special anniversary present

Groundhog Day: Colin was delighted then concerned that Sarah's special anniversary 'present' would take the spontaneity out of their love life

These days we make love about once a week. And, in common with many of my friend's husbands, Colin regularly complains that this just isn't enough.

Which is why I'd presumed that this gift would be welcomed rather than the cause of a row.

Later that evening, we talked it through.

'At least when we do it, it's spontaneous,' Colin told me. 'You putting it into your diary isn't exactly a turn on.'

But despite his reservations, we decided to give it a go.

Somehow I felt certain that in the years ahead he would look back on this as the most intimate gift of our marriage.

DAY ONE

There's no time like the present, so, for the first time in at least five years we make love on a work day before I've even put the kettle on.

'It's amazing what the promise of frequent sex brings out in a manbold;" color="#d42699"">'font-weight: bold;" color="#d42699"">1.6em;" color="#d42699"">

So much for Colin worrying about this taking the spontaneity out of sex: this feels impulsive and slightly wicked.

I arrive at work with a smug smile on my face (though guiltily note that this also means I'm off the hook at bedtime, having done the day's deed already).

DAY TWO

Home from work later than usual, I walk in to find the table beautifully set with candles and flowers and dinner in the oven.

The last time Colin did this was our wedding anniversary, but this is just an ordinary evening. It's amazing what the promise of frequent sex brings out in a man.

DAY THREE

Home to find the table set and Colin's cooking again - I could get used to this. I feel spoilt, especially when he refuses to let me wash up and sends me upstairs for a soak in the bath. This is beginning to feel as much a gift for me as for Colin.

DAY FOUR

I've stayed late at work and missed the last bus home, so I've had to fork out for a taxi when I'm dangerously close to payday. I'm in a foul mood when I walk into the house and am greeted by the same scene as the last two days.

'God, this is starting to feel like Groundhog Day,' I snap unkindly. We eat in silence, and I start to feel guilty when I think how much effort Colin is making. 'Leave the dishes,' I tell him. 'It's time for your present.'

DAY FIVE

Last night could so easily have ended with us going to sleep not speaking after I arrived home so tired and grumpy.

Instead we slept wrapped up in each other's arms, just like the old days. It's Saturday, so we're less restricted on when we can make love. We decide to get our chores done: the house needs cleaning and Colin needs to tackle the garden.

We're shattered and fall asleep on the sofa. Colin's snoring wakes me up just before midnight. 'Quick,' I tell him, as I shake him awake and push the cats out of the room. 'Otherwise it won't count.'

DAY SIX

Sundays in our house are normally lazy affairs, but today we've got a christening to go to and we're running late.

We vow to make love as soon as we get home, but while Colin doesn't drink, I'm partial to champagne, and it's been flowing all afternoon.

Back home, all I want to do is go to bed and sleep, but, of course, I can't.

Sarah & Colin Kavanagh

Struggle: Sarah has to wake Colin up on day five to make love before midnight so that 'it still counts'

DAY SEVEN

I'm beginning to wonder if this was such a good idea.

Last night, love-making felt like a chore for the first time, and because neither of us was particularly in the mood we just went through the motions.

I'm not looking forward to bedtime and Colin admits he's not interested either. Sure enough, we fall asleep without any marital relations taking place. Looks like this could be over before it got started.

DAY EIGHT

I wake up cross with both of us that we've given up so easily, and tell Colin we've got to make up for last night by making love twice today.

We tackle the project with renewed vigour before work and then again straight after dinner.

'At least now we can go to bed and go straight to sleep,' says Colin. I feign indignation, but he's only said exactly what I was thinking.

DAY NINE

Colin wakes up hoping for a repeat performance of yesterday, but I'm not playing. I have to be in work early. 'Tonight, I promise,' I say as we kiss goodbye.

What's normally a brief kiss turns into a passionate one - not bad considering we've been together more than a decade. I think about Colin regularly through the day.

DAY TEN

My sister calls to remind me that I've promised to baby-sit my 11 and 14-year-old nieces this weekend. I tell her that I'm worried this might impact on our lovemaking.

'Welcome to my world,' she scoffs, before telling me I can't back out on my sisterly duties. I tell Colin that we have to practise being very quiet.

DAY 11

The girls arrive armed with DVDs and bags of sweets, and announce they want to stay up really late, just like they did last time they stayed over. By 11pm, I'm pleading with them to go to sleep.

'Forget it,' I snap at Colin when I finally get under the duvet. There's no way I can do that with the girls awake on the other side of the wall.

DAY 12

'I've lost 2lb. All this extra exercise is doing me good'

Little wonder couples with children complain they don't have enough sex: finding an opportunity with these two in the house is all but impossible.

In the end, I send them out with a long shopping list, set the timer on my phone to go off in ten minutes and drag Colin upstairs. 'Look on it as a challenge,' I tell him.

DAY 13

The girls go home and we've got the house to ourselves. Midmorning I say breezily: 'I'll just vacuum and then we can go to bed.'

Bad move. I accidentally suck up one of the girl's hair bobbles and it gets stuck in the machine.

It takes Colin an hour to get it going again, by which time love is the last thing on either of our minds. But we do it anyway and then go out for lunch, something we realise we just don't do often enough.

DAY 14

I go out for a drink after work with a girlfriend and tell her about our project. 'You must be mad,' she says, before warning me that our friendship will be ruined if Colin or I tell her husband what we're up to. 'Don't you dare go giving him any daft ideas.'

DAY 15

I'm going to be working late tonight, so I set the alarm for 6am so we can get our duties out of the way before the day gets started. Colin grunts when I try to nudge him awake. 'I need my sleep,' he groans.

Maybe he'll be a bit more understanding when he's in the mood for love and I say that I'm too tired.

DAY 16

Friends come round for a midweek dinner and comment on how attentive we seem to each other. I keep quiet about why, having taken note of my friend's reaction earlier in the week, but throw Colin a wink.

We're definitely a lot more tactile with each other, and have started flirting again.

DAY 17

I spoke too soon - we've had a huge row over the fact that Colin forgot to put out the bin last night and now we're up to our eyes in rubbish.

He can't see why I'm making such a fuss, which only makes me madder. The last thing I want to do is to make love with Colin. Normally something like this would be the perfect excuse to withhold sex, but that's not an option.

It's difficult to stay cross with someone you've made love to - Colin promises to make a trip to the tip and all is forgiven.

DAY 18

I've got a streaming cold and a headache. Colin is keeping his distance. 'What about a cuddle?' I ask as I splutter into a tissue. 'No thanks,' says Colin. 'I'm sleeping in the spare room.'

DAY 19

Still poorly, so I stay in bed. Colin spends the day bringing me hot drinks and homemade soup, and does all the housework so I can rest.

He's never been this attentive when I've had a cold before - all this lovemaking has made him a changed man.

DAY 20

The weekend has been a write-off on the sex front, yet Colin and I feel closer and more relaxed than we have in a long time.

It brings it home to me how important regular sex in a marriage is to nurture the bond you share.

DAY 21

Back to work, and I'm almost restored to full health. I send Colin a flirty text hinting at the fun we'll be able to enjoy when we see each other later. I can't believe I'm chatting up my own husband.

DAY 22

I notice that my trousers are a little looser, so I step on the scales and discover I've lost 2lb. All this extra exercise is doing me good.

DAY 23

A friend is in town and stays the night. I'd emailed her at the start of the month and told her what we were doing, which she brings up over dinner, joking that we'd better not keep her awake tonight.

This puts Colin in a bad mood because I've let slip what we're up to, and when she goes to bed he has a go at me for being indiscreet. I try to laugh it off, but he's really cross about it. He refuses to make love. I lie awake fuming - isn't it supposed to be the woman who withholds favours?

DAY 24

Colin wakes feeling guilty and suggests we make up for missing out yesterday. I realise that the argument will only escalate if I refuse. Instead, we make love and the grumpiness vanishes. We make love again that evening, our row long forgotten.

DAY 25

I meet my mum for lunch and she comments on how fresh-faced I appear. 'Have you discovered a new foundation?' she asks.

I must say I feel more attractive and better about myself than I have in years. Feeling desired does wonders for a woman's self-esteem.

DAY 26

I'm having to factor in an extra ten minutes into my daily grooming regime so I can shave my legs, and I'm wearing more make-up than usual.

I'm going to continue with this after the month is up - it's nice to feel groomed, whether it's with sex in mind or not.

DAY 27

We're near the end of Colin's gift, so we decide to spend the entire day in bed, just as we did on Sundays when we first became a couple. It's not just about sex - it's about relishing shutting out the rest of the world. We'd like a family, so we need to make the most of days like this.

DAY 28

We've made love 25 times in 28 days, and there's no question that we've grown closer as a result.

I thought I might be relieved to get to the last day, but I'm just determined to make sex far more of a priority than it used to be.

My friend has lent me a DVD I've wanted to watch for ages, so I put it on after dinner. Colin and I cuddle up on the sofa together to watch it - normally he spreads out on one chair while I take over another.

'When did we stop doing this?' I ask him. We go to bed tired and we've got work in the morning.

'Let's just cuddle,' says Colin, and as we drift off to sleep it feels like the perfect end to the present that ended up being a gift not just for Colin, but for our marriage, too...

Well not exactly yet as our juliet has not decided yet to join him .

A heartbroken pensioner who thought his wife was going to die killed himself near the spot where the couple first courted - only for her to get better.

article-1268865-094F05D8000005DC-221_233x423.jpg

The body of 84-year-old Reginald Heydon was found by police in the River Trent at Shardlow, near Derby, more than three weeks after he disappeared.

An inquest heard that at the time he went missing, Mr Heydon's wife of 60 years, Marjorie, 83, was in a critical condition in hospital.

Derby Coroner's Court was told doctors had told Mr Heydon and his family that his wife was not expected to live much longer.

Hours later on November 2 last year, the pensioner wrote a note to his family, left his home and was never seen alive again.

But in a tragic twist, his critically ill wife recovered from her illness and was discharged from hospital.

Last night Mr Heydon's son, Paul, said: 'We had the impression she had hours to live. We were told that on the day that she went into intensive care.'

But after his father had been found dead, his mother recovered and was able to come home.

'That was the real tragedy. If only he had waited,' he said.

Derby and South Derbyshire Deputy Coroner Louise Pinder said the note Mr Heydon left had made it clear what his intentions were.

She said: 'The contents of the letter do suggest he was contemplating taking his own life. There was a suggestion he was going to the river.'

Despite a police search involving helicopters, dogs and a special task force to search the river his body was not found until November 25 by a passerby.

Acting Sergeant Robert Buckley told the court that the area had a significance. He said: 'The river had been a courting area to which they went.'

A postmortem examination carried out on the body gave the cause of death as a vasovagal attack - a nervous attack leading to fainting - caused by submersion in cold water.

Ms Pinder said he would not have suffered. She gave a verdict that Mr Heydon had taken his own life.

The court heard that, during his later years, Mr Heydon had been inclined to drink to alleviate anxiety.

He was taking an anti-depression and his the deterioration of his wife's condition in hospital had exacerbated that.

The inquest was told his wife had undergone surgery at the Royal Derby Hospital for a swallowing problem, after which her condition became critical.

Mr Heydon said of his father: 'When the news came about mum he seemed like he knew how serious it was.

'He had accepted things were not going to be the same. But she got better and she was able to come home afterwards.'

Made in Naija satellites for launch in October

Can ET phone home ? Can the extra terrestrials which seem like aliens unseen in our Engineering Technology now REALLY make a satellite ?

Convinced that Space Science is critical in the development of any nation, Nigeria has completed work in the building of two more earth observation satellites, NigeriaSat 2 and Nigeria Sat X, said Seidu Mohammed, the Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA.

Mr. Mohammed, who stated that the satellites will be due for launch on October 2010, adding that specifically, the Nigeria Sat X was designed and built by 27 Nigerian Engineers.

“Satellite projects, like building projects, are in phases. We have finished most of the phases. The spacecraft are now ready. The Nigerian engineers were there to design and implement Sat X and they have done that and are back home.

“The next stage is to move the satellite to the site for launch. It takes a lot of time, the launching company has to look through its programme, get itself ready and by October, the satellite will be launched,” he said.

He further stated when the two satellites are eventually launched, they will impact positively on agriculture, defence, and almost all other sectors of the Nigerian economy.

“The fact that Nigerian Engineers designed and built Sat X brings confidence into us that it is possible here. We are going to provide data for efficient agriculture all over Nigeria, and the launch of Sat 2 with 2.5m resolution enables all cities to go ahead with cadastral plan to have information to increase their revenue, as Lagos State is doing now, and provide enough information about cultural development in terms of soil characterisation, water resources development, road corridor selection, and so on,” Mr. Mohammed said.

He also noted that Nigeria’s foray into the space science and technology world has enabled the development of a critical mass of space engineers, revealing that 15 engineers were trained for NigeriaSat, which will expire by December 2010. 54 were trained for NIGCOMSAT-1, while 27 were trained for Sat 2 and Sat X, with an additional 25 Scientists trained in geospatial application.

He added that it was only right for Nigeria to build its own satellite, considering the huge capital outflow to source satellite data. He said that today, space technologies have become integrated into everyday life, so deeply that modern and traditional societies cannot function without them.

“Survey conducted by NASRDA in 2004 showed that capital out-flow paid by African countries for their international telephone traffic is about $445 million per year, hence making tariff on communications the highest in Africa than in any other continent. Nigeria alone pays as much as $200 million per year to lease satellite transponders,” he said.

The Director General insisted that the space technology will help in addressing some environmental concerns in Nigeria.

“As a result of recent trends of earthquake in Haiti, Chile, Japan, and China and recent trends in crustal deformation in Nigeria, as evident by tremors in the country and continuous monitoring of Ife-Wara-Zungeru faults in Nigeria, the International Astronomy Agency, IAA, has approved the first expert study for Africa at the request of NASRDA,” he said.

“By this request, IAA is expected to put experts together all over the world to study the equatorial plane for the benefit of the countries within the equatorial region.”

ABUJA—MINISTER of Finance, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, in Washington D.C. has emerged as the new Chairman of the Board of World Bank and International Monetary Fund, BWIs, after a keenly contested election. This was just as the World Bank indicated interest to carry out a comprehensive audit of the power sector in the country with a view to finding lasting solution to the power crisis.

Olusegun-Agana[1].jpg

The move was a follow-up to the recent parley between Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and top management of the world financial body during his last visit to the United States, US.

Aganga told journalists at the meeting in Washington DC that the new appointment had further demonstrated the important role Nigeria plays in the global economic front.

He said: “As you are aware, Nigeria was elected as the chairman, board of the BWIs for the 2010 during the 2009 annual meeting held in Istanbul, Turkey. I am delighted to inform you that I have since assumed the responsibility of that office.”

The minister said the appointment was “a unique opportunity to serve” noting that such opportunities come once in every 20 to 30 years.

Describing the new role as a huge challenge, Aganga said he will not disappoint Nigeria and the international community that offered him the role under the current global economic recovery stage.

World Bank experts visit Nigeria for power audit

Meantime, a team of World Bank experts would be visiting Nigeria on May 10, 2010 for the exercise that would proffer solution to the power crisis in the country..

Addressing journalists at the World Bank/International Monetary Fund, IMF, 2010 Spring Meeting, in Washington DC, Aganga, who was joined by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, said because the issue of power had become central to the nation’s economy, the Federal Government was determined to engage power experts in all the fronts to tackle the problem.

Aganga noted: “The meeting was very fruitful, as the bank stands ready to assist the country. The meeting resolved to have a comprehensive audit of the power sector. A World Bank mission to this effect is envisaged for May 10, 2010.”

He told reporters that the Federal Government power committee had done its audit of the power sector, noting that what the World Bank promised to do with Nigeria was to share their own understanding of the power problem.

“They also have information to share with us and that is what the May 10, 2010 meeting is going to focus on,” the minister said.

Asked what the federal government intended to do to meet the power needs of the over 140 million Nigerians, Aganga said the acting president had assured investors and power experts of creating an enabling environment, that is giving the legal framework, in the sector as well as aligning and identifying investors that will key into the energy sector infrastructure development.

He noted that since financing was not the problem militating against the improvement of the power sector in the country, the government would, this time around concentrate on execution and having a plan that “we will adhere to” as well as ensuring that there was continuity in the entire power arrangement.

Other areas the minister said the World Bank had shown interests to assist the country include ensuring a systematic engagement and consultations on issues relating to agricultural sector.

He said the bank was also supporting ongoing reforms in the banking sector and the proposed Asset Management Company; strengthening the supervisory and regulatory framework for the financial sector and support for the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, SMEs, in the country.

The minister said the meeting with Oby Ezekwesili, World Bank Vice President, Africa region also provided the opportunity to follow up on wide range of issues discussed with the World Bank Group during the visit of Jonathan mid April.

THE LAWSUIT involving Zenon Oil President, Femi Otedola, and Bank PHB turned messier on Friday as counsel for Bank PHB, Ajibola Aribisala, told the Lagos High Court that his client - Bank PHB Managing Director, Cyril Chukwuma - was threatened by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to reach an amicable settlement with Otedola or risk sack.

Aribisala disclosed this while reacting to an oral application moved by Otedola's counsel, Kemi Pinerro.

Pinerro had told Justice Kazeem Alogba that Bank PHB, without an order of court, caused to be published in The Guardian last Thursday an advertorial of the motion on notice and the Mareva injunction issued by the court.
Photos:Otedola and Cyril Chukwuma
He said the action is contemptuous of court and an abuse of court process.

He urged the court to compel the bank to retract the publication, failing which it would amount to self help and trying the hand of the court.

Counsel to the other defendants - Zenon, African Petroleum, Afribank Registrars, Julius Berger, Skye Bank, and Zenith Bank - agreed with Pinerro.

However, Aribisala countered that he does not need the express permission of the court to publish court documents and a court order.

He said he adopted the measure based on threats against Chukwuma from Abuja..

He disclosed that apart from Jonathan making telephone calls to Chukwuma asking him to reach an amicable settlement with Otedola, his security details were withdrawn by the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, thereby exposing his life to danger.

Aribisala also alleged that Jonathan threatened to have Chukwuma fired if he refuses to withdraw the suit.

He said these are a few cases of the intimidation and harassment of his client since the commencement of the court case, and that Chukwuma would depose to an affidavit on the allegations.

He asked Pinerro to cite the Section of the law breached by the publication of the advertorial.

The court granted Otedola leave to do a retraction in The Guardian and adjourned the case for further hearing.

However, Bank PHB has obtained a Mareva injunction against Zenon freezing all its accounts in 10 banks in a bid to recover a N5.839 billion debt owed it by the oil marketing firm.

The order, made by Alogba, was sequel to a statement of claim issued by Aribisala on behalf of Bank PHB, which also asked the court to cause to be transferred to it all the funds in the 10 banks that have made returns in response to the order.

The accounts, containing a total credit balance of over N2.4 billion, are in Ecobank, Finbank, First Bank, Oceanic, Skye, StabicIBTC, Standard Chartered, Sterling, Unity, and Zenith.

They were identified upon an order made by Alogba directing all banks in the country to disclose Zenon's funds in their books.

Bank PHB's request, contained in a motion on notice, is in addition to an earlier order of Alogba freezing African Petroleum (AP's) account in the bank, with a credit balance of N2.317 billion.

AP is described as a member of the Zenon Energy Group of companies, with Otedola as Chairman.

Also to be affected is the N397.8 million allegedly owed Zenon by Julius Berger, which the court ordered to be paid into an interest yielding account in the name of its Chief Registrar.

These resulted from a suit filed by Bank PHB alleging that Zenon is owing it N5,839,709,439.91 as at January 11 in loans granted between 2007 and 2008.

The defendants are Zenon, Otedola, Afribank Registrars, and Julius Berger.

Bank PHB, in the motion for mareva injunction to freeze Zenon's accounts, said the order is to prevent it from dissipating its funds in the 10 banks, with the aim of frustrating whatever the court's decision may be in the substantive suit.

It accused Zenon of breaching the terms of the credit facilities by not disclosing its earnings from its sales, failing to remit the proceeds, not fulfilling its commitment to liquidate the debt, and avoiding its obligation to the bank.

Bank PHB averred, in a statement of claim, that in the course of its banker-customer relationship with Zenon, it granted the company various credit facilities between 2007 and 2008, with Zenon accepting all the conditions.

It added that at every occasion when loan was granted Zenon, Otedola "had always guaranteed due compliance, by the first defendant (Zenon), with the bank's (claimant's) stipulated terms and conditions of the respective facilities."

It averred that, as part of collaterals for the facilities, Zenon pledged, among others, the payment of rental proceeds from its property at 3B Agodogba Avenue and 12A and 12B Parkview Estate Ikoyi, Lagos.

Zenon also allegedly pledged dividends payment from its investments in AP for 2009 and 2010; its expected proceeds from Julius Berger for the supply of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and mortgage on its property at 1399A or 5 Tiamiyu Savage, Street, Victoria Island.

The bank accused Zenon of defaulting and refusing to abide by the conditions and, aside repaying a fraction of the loan, refused to honour demands made by the bank since the expiration of the facility.

Bank PHB averred that Zenon's failure to comply with the agreement led to the classification of its accounts as non-performing by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and contributed to why the CBN appointed a new management for the bank..

The case was adjoined to April 29.

Why I decided to post this ?

1. Because it is true
2. Because I know Zenith Bank well and I'm not happy with the way the management are treating staff
3. Because the management of the bank is trying by all means to suppress this information by blocking news, information and blog sites within the bank. Can you imagine, blocking CNN, BBC News, Google, 234Next from the entire bank's internet access Hmm but not 9jabook !
4. Because the bank is busy paying off news media organisations not to publish this information

5. Because I honestly hope the bank can be more transparent

So here goes, the article is copied from a well known online reporting site and below are comments from readers. Even these reporters are trying to hide the news within their website. Maybe they've been compromised as well.attached are some comments from site .

A seeming board room crisis that may rock zenith bank to its foundation is currently brewing in the bank. It involves the loyalists of the current managing director and chief executive of the bank, Mr. Jim Ovia and the incoming successor and current deputy managing director, Godwin Emefiele.

Competent sources within the bank trace the imbroglio to the emergence of Emefiele, who has served Ovia as Deputy for eight years, as the new helmsman of the bank. Emefiele is said to be a mere puppet of Ovia and lacking in vision and direction which may explain why his appointment his yet to be ratified by the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN). It is said that Ovia and Emefiele are putting pressure on the CBN to approve the appointment of the latter to ensure the status quo remains long after Ovia’s exit in August 2010. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Lamido Sanusi had earlier in January directed that all bank managing director who had served more than ten years in office should vacate their seats by July 31, 2010.

The subtle but fierce infighting among the board members came to a head two weeks ago when, according to sources at the bank, one of the younger executive directors, Apollos Ikpobe and Emefiele were engaged in an open war of words in the very glare of many members of staff, including those in the junior cadre.

A staff, who witnessed the show of shame but who will not want his name in print, said trouble started when Mr. Emefiele while presiding over a Credit Committee meeting, allegedly ordered a Deputy General Manager, Sola Ladipo, to present a Credit report which Ikpobe, his supervising Executive Director, had asked him to step down as the report did not contain all information necessary to scale through the committee screening. Our source added that the executive director, feeling slighted decided to excuse himself from the deliberation as his efforts to make Emefiele understand his position on the need for more information fell on deaf years. Events however took a turn for the worse as Emefiele, apparently feeling threatened by Ikpobe’s position, issued a query to Ikpobe for walking out of the meeting and went further to announce to everyone one’s hearing that the board had to choose between Ikpobe and himself, insisting that he could not work with some the current executive directors, particular Ikpobe. Emefiele was said to have told Ikpobe “you make me nervous, JO (Jim Ovia) will have to choose between the two of us”. It was revealed that this event led to a decision by Ovia, who controls the board of directors, immediately took sides with his surrogate and informed Ikpobe that he would have to leave the bank immediately. Our source further revealed that Ovia quickly changed his decision when confronted by Ikpobe of his willingness to leave the bank but he and Emefiele would also have some explanations to the shareholders and particularly CBN of some shady transactions and transfers involving Ovia and Emefiele running into several billions of naira. Our source who kept sealed lips on the alleged illegal transactions said they were indicting enough to calm all nerves and a return to status quo.

It was gathered that Ikpobe who joined the bank 18 years ago was reinstated to his position in exchange for his silence. “That was what saved his job”, our source added. Another senior staff of the bank who corroborated this story further revealed that one other executive director who opposes the appointment of Emefiele is Udom Emmanuel who though a close confidant of Ovia, insists that he would only support Emefiele if he is named the Deputy Managing Director, a position that is yet to be filled due to the scramble among the contending parties.

Zenith Manager Defrauds Bank of N4.5Billion
Security agents are on the trail of a manager with Zenith bank Leonard Okoh who is believed to have defrauded the bank of over N4.5billion over eighteen month period. Police sources confirmed that the fraud took place at the Area 8, Abuja branch of the bank.
The lid on the fraud was uncovered when Okoh resigned his appointment suddenly and did not wait for approval of his resignation before fleeing the country. According to information from his colleagues, the run-away manager had been siphoning money from accounts of his customers over a period of time. The last deal took place about three weeks ago while he went to relieve a branch manager in another branch in Area 7 branch, just opposite his own branch where he is the assistant branch manager. Okoh is alleged to have forged signatures of officials of Aso Savings Limited, which he is the relationship manager, and transferred the sum of 1.5 billion naira from the said account to several accounts abroad. He resigned his appointment the next day and his whereabouts have not been known since then. He is said to have fled his home leaving his wife and aged parents who are presently being detained by the police.

Investigations revealed that a Deputy General Manager of the bank, Mr. Awe Leh, who is also the Zonal head of Abuja office where the fraud took to place has been redeployed to Lagos while investigations are on. He is being blamed for allowing a fraud of such magnitude to happen in his zone. Enquiries at the Economic and Financial Crime Commission said they are aware of the fraud but no formal report has been made to the agency by the bank.
It was gathered that the bank refused to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC because of its belief that the commission may celebrate the case and make it a public issue just as it did when Ovia was arrested by the EFCC in December 2008 and the subsequent arraignment of three of its staff by the commission in Port Harcourt. Another source said the reason may also be that Okoh, whose flamboyant life-style is well known within the bank, is a nephew of an executive director of the bank who may become the number one topshot in the bank in a matter of months.

Profit sharing hasnt been paid for 18months, medicals havent being paid, salaries have been stylishly reduced, no promotions in months, and in all these, the bank is still growing and doing very well, /why wont there be a fraud, its the nemesis that will haunt jim and adora,N4.5billion is too small compared to the injustice, inhumanity and degradation that most zenith marketing staff are subjected to, CBN, EFCC and labour should look into this. The bulk of the staff i heard are very hardworking and are proud of the institution they work for, but Jim Ovia and Adora do not see this. This is the beginning of the end, God help us all.

as a matter of fact, this is not the first major heist that zenith has suffered( if it can be termed such)
over the past few months the number of staff fraud has increased. staff pilfering from old accounts, staff stealing from atms, and now this outright major heist that managment couldnt manage to put a lid on.
for over 4m mths nobody in d lower ranks has been promoted while d managment staff liver larger. an agm s leave allowance is higher than an et s annual salary ( 12mths!) all the llowances deducted from the salaries eg medical and profits have not been paid over an 18 mth period. the murmuring is gettin too loud to be ignored. actually staff are threatning huge frauds if they do not ecieve their profit sharind this month. i wonder if mr ovia and emefele read this. if they dont ,thier pips should pass this on to them.
people believe if d staff were well renumerated compared to the performance of d bank, this theft would not have occuured

As an insider in the bank, I can authoritatively confirm that the fraud is over N7 Billion and the figure is still growing. No one knows yet the total amount. But it was previously discovered to be N4.5 Billion, it later increased to N6 Billion, but currently N7 Billion. No one knows what the final figure will be. As for Jim, he is a very smart rogue. Ho stopped promotion of staff for the past 40 months, he stylishly reduced staff salary through non payment of Profit Sharing and cancellation of cash payment of medical allowances. The bank needs to correct all these, otherwise more frauds are still coming in the bank. Well, if you guys care to have more facts about this bank, I can supply. I have them in abundance. At every bank, there are internal checks such that a single signatory cannot authorize a certain amount of money. How come a single individual approved and transfered an amount that even DMD cannot transfer?

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- An armed man spotted at a North Carolina airport parking lot just after Air Force One departed Sunday told an officer he wanted to see the president and had a car equipped with police gear, including a siren and flashing lights, authorities said.

Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, is charged with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor, said Asheville Regional Airport Police Capt. Kevan Smith.

Security was heightened at the airport because President Barack Obama was leaving after spending the weekend vacationing in Asheville. He was headed to a memorial service for 29 West Virginia coal miners killed in an explosion..

At about 2 p.m., airport police saw McVey get out of a maroon car with Ohio plates and that he had a sidearm, Smith said. Both airport police and the Secret Service questioned him and he was taken into custody. The suspect was nowhere near the president's plane, which had just departed, and was in a rental car return lot that is open to the public, Smith said.

His car was equipped with clear LED law enforcement-style strobe lights in the front and rear dash, Smith said. The car also had a mounted digital camera in the front window, four large antennas on the trunk lid, and under the steering wheel was a working siren box. Smith said McVey was not in law enforcement.

When McVey got out of the car, he was listening to a handheld scanner and radio that had a remote earpiece, Smith said. Police said he was monitoring local agencies and had formulas for rifle scopes on a note in his cup holder. Police did not immediately elaborate on what the formulas might mean and Smith was not available to comment late Sunday.

McVey gave authorities an Ohio driver's license, but a computer check failed to show the number was valid, police said. His hometown of Coshocton is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.

When Officer Kaleb Rice asked him what he was doing, McVey told him he heard the president was in town and wanted to see him.

Rice removed the firearm and took McVey into custody. He was being held at the Buncombe County jail on $100,000 bond.

The investigation into what McVey was doing with a gun, with formulas for rifle scopes and why his car was equipped with police gear was continuing, Smith said. The Secret Service had no comment on the arrest, deferring to airport police.

Musa sacrifices goals target for Eagles

Nigeria Premier League top scorer Ahmed Musa has revised his goals target for the season after getting his first senior international call-up..

Musa, who is having a breakout season with Kano Pillars, had originally set a 20-goal target for himself this season. That figure would have obliterated the current 17-goal record set by Ishaya Jatau in 1993 and equalled by Akarandut Orok last season.

"I wanted to score 20 goals this season, and I believe I would have made it, with the way I am going," Musa, who is officially on 14 goals, told KickOffNigeria.com. "But now, I don’t think I can make it anymore.

"I will miss some matches when I go to the Super Eagles camp, and the league is almost over so it will be difficult to come back and score the goals to reach 20."

But the 17 year-old is happy to sacrifice his goals target if it gives him a chance to get in on Lars Lagerback's World Cup squad.

"I have confidence in the way I am playing, and I knew I will be invited. So I don’t mind if I don’t score the 20 goals, because playing for the national team is the dream of every player and I am happy that I got the invitation to come to camp."

With the plethora of Europe-based strikers at Lagerback's disposal, Musa is taking nothing for granted, just hoping that his abilities will see him through.

"I will try my best to make it. I know that I have good speed, and I like taking on defenders, I can cross the ball well and I can score goals. But it is the coach that will decide."

On the basis of what Ahmed has showed in the league and the recent WAFU Cup, Lagerback's job just got even harder.

How big a star is Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt? Let us count the ways.

When he emerged from the locker rooms and took the infield about an hour before his race at the famous Penn Relays Saturday in Philadelphia, the record crowd of 54,310 couldn't contain itself.

"It was so loud, I thought, 'Is the president here?'" said Miki Barber, of U.S.A. Blue, who was warming up for her race at the time.

Barber's twin sister, Lisa, said she couldn't hear the music in her headphones.

Then, when it came time for Bolt to compete, then track announcer had to make an unheard of request, telling the crowd to quiet down so the runners could hear the starting gun (see video).

Usain Bolt, Team Jamaica top USA in Penn Relays 4x100, USA vs. the World

"The starter was telling the crowd to be quiet," Bolt said. "That's one in a million. When you go anywhere else in the world, they are quiet (for the start). You get in front of Jamaicans and they make noise until you ask them to be quiet."

After all his gold medals and world records, you would think the 23-year-old international star would be used to it by now. He's not..

"Over the past two years I've been surprised by the amount of people that know me and the welcome I get when I go to track meets or functions," Bolt said. "I'm still trying to get used to it and I'm enjoying it."

And still showing he's worthy of the adulation.

Bolt led Jamaica Gold to a victory in the USA vs. the World 4x100 relay using a blistering 8.79 split on the anchor leg to give his team a Penn Relays record 37.90 time.

Bolt then took a victory lap that was met with a deafening roar. He stopped twice to make his trademark "lightning bolt" pose. He also signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans.

The Penn Relays is the biggest high school relay carnival in the country. And every year, organizers find a way to get some of the biggest names in the sport to show the prep stars how good you can become.

High schoolers, however, weren't the only ones taking notice of Bolt.

Lisa Barber, who has been coming to the event since she and her sisters were stars at Montclair (N.J.) High, was thrilled by Bolt's presence.

"I was leadoff leg and I could actually hear, right next to me, the crowd screaming," she told John Finger of CSN.Philly.com. "I've been coming here for about 12 years now, and this was the loudest one. It was great."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

GSM line cloning hits Lagos

FRAUDULENT cloning of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) lines, using ICT devices, is gradually joining the growing number of crimes perpetrated on cyberspace.

According to findings, perpetrators of the new trick use latest technology to duplicate telephone lines of their targets. In turn, these are used to swindle their associates, friends and relations, who are deceived into believing instructions from the cloned lines (usually pleas for financial favour) are sent from original GSM line owners.

It was also learnt that those who are involved operate as syndicates, relying on previous correspondences of their victims. Some of these are obtained from relatives or house helps to swindle unsuspecting telephone users.

The Guardian was informed that many residents of Lagos have fallen victim of this latest form of fraud, as the trend, also, spreads gradually to other Nigeria's major cities.

A reliable source said the swindlers recently hoodwinked some staff members of the University of Lagos. An unknown person was said to have used a telephone number of a certain professor to send text messages to the professor's colleagues.

Findings revealed that the message came to individual recipients, requesting they send N10, 000 each to the professor's nephew (via a bank account quoted in the message). It stated the professor could not meet the obligation because he was out of the country. As it turned out, the sender of the message had forwarded the same text to all close associates of the professor. Contrary to the fraudster's claim, the don was in Lagos...

One of the receivers said the text showed it had been sent from his colleague's phone, hence, he could not doubt its authenticity. He was skeptical, however, wondering why his colleague chose to send a text rather than make a voice call.

He said just before he would respond to the request he found the same message had been sent to all close associates of the professor.

Recently, a chief medical director of a Lagos-based hospital almost lost huge amounts of money to swindlers through a similar scam.

Unlike the UNILAG incident, an individual was said to have taken a cheque, purportedly drafted by the medical doctor to a bank. The bank called the owner of the cheque for confirmation and somebody, who claimed to the doctor, picked the call, confirming the order.

Not convinced by the voice, the bank official called the fixed line in the account mandate, only to be told the doctor had not written the cheque. During the transaction, the account owner had his line. But it was found to be inactive.

While the technology employed for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and telephone card cloning are different, a source hinted that the crime is perpetrated by the same syndicates who regularly switch from one form or fraud to the other, depending on public awareness level. They are also said to operate with international allies where they import skills and technology.

Two soldiers (names withheld), are now being detained in connection with a case of burglary in the home of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division of Nigerian Army Enugu, Major General Muhammad D. Isah.

Saturday Independent gathered that the burglars removed $250,000 belonging to the GOC.

Isah, who was said to be out of town when the burglary was carried out, returned to discover that the money was no longer where he kept it.

Upset by the discovery, the infuriated GOC was said to have vowed in ‘Allah’s name’ to fish out those behind the nefarious act and deal with them mercilessly.

Our sources disclosed that the Army chief immediately set up an investigation team comprising of military police officers and ordered the interrogation of some soldiers known as “his boys” in the barracks.

It was learnt that under serious interrogation, two of the soldiers confessed to the crime.

The two GOC boys told the investigators that they removed the money in installments in order to beat the security network in the home of their boss who was away when they struck.

Saturday Independent gathered that the two thieving soldiers would face a court martial soon.

Efforts by this reporter to speak with the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Enugu, Lt. Colonel Sagir Musa, yielded no fruits as at the time of going to the press on Friday.

At several occasions, the reporter called his two GSM lines and the response was “not available.”..

However, the news of the burglary in the GOC’s home has created anxiety in the barracks.

A soldier, who pleaded anonymity, told Saturday Independent that he has never heard such a despicable story in his 25 years of service in the Nigerian Army, saying people could conclude that the Army was harbouring criminals.

Ibori flees 9ja

  • Panic in Asaba
  • Why we resisted police, EFCC – Oghara community
  • Naija's Most Wanted Dead or Alive
Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, may have fled Nigeria in the wake of the intense manhunt for him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and security agencies.

The ex-governor has apparently become a fugitive after a two-week standoff with the EFCC, which had invited him over allegations bordering on misuse of millions of Delta State shares running into billions of naira during Ibori’s tenure between 1999 and 2007.

But the immediate past Delta chief executive had spurned the invitation, claiming that the EFCC breached due process by declaring him wanted four days before the April 17, 2010 date on his invitation letter.

He also alleged political vendetta by the Acting President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who he said was using the anti-graft agency to witch-hunt him because of alleged political differences.

Besides, Ibori expressed fears that the EFCC was planning to extradite him to the United Kingdom where he is still on trial for alleged money laundering. Sunday Sun investigation however revealed that he may have stealthily beaten the security dragnet around him and escaped in a boat through the Oghara River en route the Escravos area of the state initially to one of the neighbouring countries.

Sources say he left Oghara in the wee hours of Wednesday after the botched police raid on the community the previous day and that his escape was facilitated by a well-known Itsekiri former militant leader in the state.

His destination is still uncertain but it was gathered that he may be headed for Dubai in the oil-rich United Arab Emirate, where the ex-governor reportedly has a home.

In the last one week, a combined team of the police and soldiers attached to the military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Delta had made futile attempts to arrest him at his Oghara country home.

Thousands of youths, women and children had last Tuesday and Wednesday mounted barricades that prevented the police from entering the community, following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ogbonnaya Onovo, that Ibori be fished out.

The harried ex-governor was initially suspected to be holed up in the creeks of the Niger Delta and was being allegedly shielded by fierce-looking armed militant youths.

But a JTF source informed that this was unlikely, as the security outfit had reportedly combed the creeks of Delta and Bayelsa states in the bid to smoke him out.

According to the source, “we have searched everywhere, including some of the camps used by former militants. But the man (Ibori) is not there. As I speak to you, we are not sure he is still in Oghara. But we have not given up our search and we are sure we will get him.”

Delta government officials panic

The Ibori saga has caused a scare among officials of the state government as some of them have reportedly gone underground to escape arrest by the EFCC.

Sunday Sun learnt that fear has gripped top officials of the state Ministry of Finance following the invitation of a director in the ministry by the EFCC. At the time of this report, it was gathered that the director in charge of investments in the ministry was still being detained almost two weeks after he was invited by the anti-corruption agency.

The permanent secretary in the ministry and Auditor-General of the state are also said to have gone into hiding. Their whereabouts were unknown when EFCC operatives visited their ministry and department in continuation of the agency’s investigation on the allegations of fraud against the former governor.

Why we’re defending Ibori – Oghara chief

In an unprecedented development, Ibori’s Oghara community had on Tuesday resisted his arrest when EFCC operatives and a security team led by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Udom Ekpoudom, stormed his country home.

A septuagenarian and well-respected chief in the community, who does not want his name in print, however defended the action of the youths, saying they believe Ibori was being witch-hunted.

“No matter what happens, Ibori is our son. We cannot fold our arms and watch him being disgraced for reasons that border on political vendetta.

“Besides, it will amount to betrayal of Ibori if we had kept quiet and allowed the police to pick him just like that. Ibori is our hero and we are very proud of him. If not for Ibori, Oghara would not have known development. Come to Oghara and see what I’m talking about.

“Today, Oghara has a stadium, a well-equipped general hospital, polytechnic, college of education and other social amenities. It was during the Ibori administration that the road to Oghara was dualised with street light. At night, people say Oghara is small London. Do you now want us to abandon such a person at a time like this because of an allegation that has not been proved? Oghara people are ready to die for Ibori and we mean it,” the elder said.

He’s not on the run – Aide

When contacted on the telephone, Ibori’s media aide, Mr Tony Eluemunor, said the former governor was not on the run and that he had no reason to flee the country.

He defended his principal’s refusal to turn himself in to the EFCC, saying Ibori stands by the ruling of the court that all parties must maintain the status quo. Excerpts…

We hear Ibori has fled the country…

First of all, Ibori has no reason to run from anywhere, from anybody. We went to court and it ruled that all parties in this case maintain the status quo. So he is not running from anybody.

So is he still in the country and when is he likely to hand himself over to the EFCC?

Hand himself over to where? I just told you that everybody was asked to maintain a status quo, including the EFCC. So can’t somebody ask EFCC to leave Ibori alone?

So what is his stand?

Ibori stands on that court ruling. Every party should maintain the status quo. I’m sure your paper had Ibori’s position on Wednesday or so.

So what you are saying is that he has no reason to leave Nigeria

God bless you for this. He has no reason to be on the run because there is a court ruling and the EFCC woman is a lawyer. I know she knows the right thing to do. The IG, (Ogbonnaya) Onovo, may also be a lawyer. But most of all, I know that Onovo is a gentleman. Anybody who now says he is looking for Ibori is breaking the law. That is it.

If Ibori runs abroad, he will be playing into the hands of his enemies. This is persecution and not prosecution. It is close to the election year, so some people want him out of the way. Ibori said he does not want to contest for anything but they want him completely out of the way. That is why they are after him. There is no case against him. EFCC itself has not mentioned one single charge against him. Nothing. They just declared somebody wanted without a charge. People are wanted for bank robbery or for murder. For him, nothing. Ibori is the first person in the whole wide world who has been wanted not for any reason.

Another journalist killed in Lagos

The Judiciary correspondent for the Nation Newspapers, Edo Egbagwu has been murdered.

Police authorities said he was killed at about 7pm last night in his residence at Church Street, Shasha, Lagos. The circumstances of his death are still, however, unclear.

Colleagues described the late Mr Egbagwu as a conscientious journalist and a kind-hearted man.

Last year, a political editor at The Guardian, Bayo Ohu was killed in the same community of Egbeda-Shasha, and the police have only recently paraded some suspects in relation to the case..

Unknown gun men have gruesomely murdered Edo Sule Ugbagwu, a judiciary correspondent with The Nation newspaper.

The incident happened at his 39, Church Street, Bameke Egbeda home at about 6.30pm on Saturday, April 24.

How he died

Mr. Ugbagwu, a native of Idoma, in the Otukpo local government area of Benue State diedwhen two gun men stormed his house and shot him in the head.

The gun men who had held the deceased's younger brother, Ugboglo, hostage had earlier demanded for money.

Mr. Ugbagu, who was outside at this time, walked into the house and saw the men pointing the gun at his brother. He was infuriated at the sight of the gun men and asked them to "get out".

A tussle ensued between him and the gun men, which later led to one of the gun men shooting him in the head. He slumped and died immediately.

Mr. Ugbagwu's younger brother, Okloho Ugbagwu narrated how his elder brother was killed. "It was about 6.30pm, on Saturday, I was in my room when I heard voices down stairs, I thought it was my elder brother who had told me that he was going out with his wife some few minutes earlier, but I was surprised when the men I saw in the parlour (living room) demanded for cash, they said ‘where is the money, where is the money'," he recalled. "I said I do not know anything about any money, as we were arguing, my elder brother walked into the house, and saw them pointing a gun at me, he demanded to know what the whole thing was about and they told him that they want money. He got angry and asked them to get out, he walked towards them and kept saying ‘get out, get out'; a tussle ensued between him and the men and that was how one of them shot him in the head;he just slumped. The gun men walked up to me and started shooting at things around me, but none of the bullets hit me, they dragged and pushed me into my room and locked me up, that was all I heard about them."

The gun men however ran out of the house without taking any cash, or property. They were said to have driven away in an awaiting car. Still coming to terms Despite efforts from sympathisers to hold her down, Mrs. Ugbagwu, the deceased's wife, kept screaming "I was going out with my husband, when he received a call, he told me that he had to go back to the house, I was still waiting for him outside, when I started hearing gun shots, when I went into the house," she said. "I saw my husband's lifeless body, they should have killed me too, why, oh why, did they not kill me with my husband."

Reacting to the killing, the spokesperson of the Lagos State police command, Frank Mba, said the commissioner of police, Marvel Akpoyibo, visited the family, saying that he promised to fish out the killers.

"The commissioner of police and the Area commander visited the house, to show the utmost importance we attach to this case, we have not ascertained the motive behind this killing, and investigations have however commenced, to bring the perpetrators to book." Mr. Mba said.

Mr. Ugbagwu's killing brings to two, the death of journalists killed at Egbeda in less than one year. Bayo Ohu, an assistant political editor of The Guardian newspaper, was shot dead at his Egbeda residence on Sunday September 20, 2009. It will be recalled Paul Abayomi Ogundeji, a member of This- Day's editorial board was shot at Egebda as well, on his way home on August 17, 2008.

'A good man'

Mr. Ugbagwu, who was 42 years old before his death, joined The Nation newspaper as a pioneer staff in 2004; a reporter covering the Lagos High Court, Ikeja Division.

According to his colleagues, he will be remembered for his conscientiousness and love for journalism. "He was an easygoing person who had a very good sense of humour. He was serious on his job but was a no-nonsense person. He had (a) liberal approach to life but does not hesitate to air his views or his opinion at any time not minding whose ox is gored," said John Austin Unachukwu, his colleague on the legal desk.

Mr. Unachukwu also described the deceased as a very lively person who had a very good sense of professionalism. "We had a very good working relationship and we will dearly miss him," Mr. Unachukwu
said.

‘Not another unsolved murder'

In a statement signed by the from the management of Vintage Press Ltd, the publishers of The Nation Newspapers, it charged the police to apprehend the killers of Mr. Ugbagwu, saying this should not be swept under the carpet.

"We urge the police to fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act," it said. The company also sent its condolences the family of the late journalist: "We condole with them and pray to God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss. May Mr Ugbagwu's soul rest in peace."

Mr. Ugbagwu is survived by his wife, five siblings and an aged mother.

Some Muslims are fond of condemning western morality – alcoholism, nudity, premarital sex and homosexuality often being cited as examples. But Muslims do not have a monopoly on morality. In the west, child marriages and sex with children are illegal. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for many Muslim countries..

I recently saw the documentary on the Dancing Boys of Afghanistan. It exposed an ancient custom called "bacha bazi" (boy for play), where rich men buy boys as young as 11 from impoverished families for sexual slavery. The boys are dressed in women's clothes and made to dance and sing at parties, before being carted away by the men for sex. Owning boys is considered a symbol of status and one former warlord boasted of having up to 3,000 boys over a 20-year period, even though he was married, with two sons. The involvement of the police and inaction of the government means this form of child prostitution is widespread.

The moral hypocrisy is outrageous in a country where homosexuality is not only strictly forbidden but savagely punished, even between two consenting adults. However, men who sodomise young boys are not considered homosexuals or paedophiles. The love of young boys is not a phenomenon restricted to Afghanistan; homosexual pederasty is common in neighbouring Pakistan, too. In my view, repression of sexuality and extreme gender apartheid is to blame.

And in the Middle East, it's young girls who are considered desirable and men are able to satisfy their lusts legally through child marriages. In Yemen, more than a quarter of girls are married before the age of 15. Cases of girls dying during childbirth are not unusual, and recently, one 12-year-old child bride even died from internal bleeding following sexual intercourse. In another case, a 12-year-old girl was married to an 80-year-old man in Saudi Arabia.

So why is the practice of child marriage sanctioned in Muslim countries? Unfortunately, ultra-conservative religious authorities justify this old tribal custom by citing the prophet Muhammad's marriage to Aisha. They allege Aisha was nine years old when the prophet married her. But they focus conveniently on selected Islamic texts to support their opinions, while ignoring vast number of other texts and historical information, which suggests Aisha was much older, putting her age of marriage at 19. Child marriage is against Islam as the Qur'an is clear that intellectual maturity is the basis for deciding age of marriage, and not puberty, as suggested by these clerics.

Whatever one's view on the prophet's marriage, no faith can claim moral superiority since child marriages have been practised in various cultures and societies across the world at one time or another. In modern times, though, marrying children is no longer acceptable and no excuse should be used to justify this.

I find the false adherence to Islamic principles and the "holier than thou" attitude of some Muslim societies similar to the blatant hypocrisy and double standards of 19th-century Victorian Britain, where the outward appearance of dignity and prudishness camouflaged an extreme prevalence of sexual and moral depravity behind closed doors. In those days, too, there were many men willing to pay to have sex with children – until a plethora of social movements arose that resulted in changes in laws and attitudes in society.

A similar shift in social attitudes is also required in traditional Muslim societies. Having boy sex slaves or child brides should not be seen as badges of honour. Instead, Muslims need to do more to attach shame to such practices; otherwise, acceptance of this behaviour will make them complicit in the sexual exploitation of children. I fail to understand why Muslims are so vocal on abuses by the west in Abu Ghraib, Guantánamo, Iraq and Afghanistan, but display moral blindness when it comes to children? It's about time this silence was broken, so these violations of innocence can be stopped.

A too-passive attitude in dealing with child abuse has rubbed off on Muslim communities in Britain, too. I have heard many stories at first hand of child sexual abuse and rape, which show that the issue is not being addressed at all. Those who have had the courage to speak out have been met with reactions of denial and shame. Such attitudes mean that children will continue to suffer in silence. Sexual abuse of children happens in all communities, as has been revealed by the recent Catholic church scandal. At least, they have finally started to take action. Muslim communities should learn from this and also start being more open, instead of continuing to sweeping the issue under the carpet.

I am finding that more and more Muslims feel it is their duty to criticise others for actions they consider sinful – quoting the following popular saying of Muhammad to justify their interference:

"If you see something wrong, you should correct it with your hand and if you are unable to, then speak out against it and if you cannot do that, then feel that it is wrong in your heart."

I wonder how, then, Muslims can remain silent when it comes to the sexual abuse of children?

So, do you think you would have liked Jesus as a preacher? Chances are – both yes and no. Yes, because we could not help but be drawn to him and be transfixed by the power of his message. And no, because like those in John 6, we would eventually come face to face with the uncompromising demands of the gospel, and also like many of his disciples who “turned back and no longer followed him.”

What strikes me about this Sermon on the Plain (if you will), is that in it Jesus presents life as it is in this world, and then challenges them to live in a counter-culture – the lifestyle of citizens of the kingdom of God.

For in the kingdom of God, if you are poor or hungry or bereaved or hated in this world, there will be a reversal in God’s kingdom. In God’s kingdom you will be rich and satisfied and comforted and joyful. And if your life has revolved around the things of this world – accumulating wealth, being well fed, filling your life with pleasure, being well spoken of by the people who matter – there will also be a reversal. You have already received your comfort, your wealth, your praise in this world. Do not expect God’s blessing in the next.

Jesus deals with a very real problem – how do you treat people – especially difficult people. Now, if you have never had difficult people in your life, you can tune out for a few minutes – you won’t need to hear what he has to say. But if you deal with difficult people, listen carefully.

You’re not going to like what you hear, because we’re used to the principle of reciprocation – give back what you’re given – somebody hurts you, hates you, hits you, curses you, steals from you – you give them the same back – only more so. In our human way of thinking, it just seems right, just, fair. It keeps things even. They strike you on the cheek, you bloody their nose – they curse you, you destroy their reputation – they steal from you, you burn their house down. That’s how life was in Jesus’ day. It’s not too different now..

But Jesus says, turn it upside down – “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:27-31).

Life is not about reciprocation or revenge. You should treat people, not how they have treated you, but how you would want to be treated. You are the thermostat that regulates the interactions. And you ask – what if they don’t respond – what if they keep treating me badly? This isn’t about them – this is about how God wants you to live. You keep treating people the way God would treat them. Let God worry about the response.

Why? It’s a God thing. None of this makes sense in this world. Our natural response is to love those who love us, do good to those who are good to us, lend to those who will pay us back. But Jesus says, that’s not how the kingdom of God operates – “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:32-36). Our response isn’t natural – it is supernatural.

Stephen Hawking in front of sun with coronal mass ejections.

THE aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrialsare almost certain to exist — but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, will set out his latest thinkingon some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.

Alien life, he will suggest, is almost certain to exist in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the centreof stars or even floating in interplanetary space.

Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containinghundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely tobe the only planet where life has evolved.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work outwhat aliens might actually be like.”

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals — the sort of life that has dominated Earthfor most of its history.

One scene in his documentary for the Discovery Channel shows herds of two-legged herbivores browsing on an alien cliff-face where they arepicked off by flying, yellow lizard-like predators. Another showsglowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceansthought to underlie the thick ice coating Europa, one of the moons ofJupiter.

Such scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead on to a serious point: that a few life forms could be intelligent and pose athreat. Hawking believes that contact with such a species could bedevastating for humanity.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligentlife might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imaginethey might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources fromtheir home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think theoutcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed inAmerica, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

The completion of the documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, now 68, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease and has very limitedpowers of communication. The project took him and his producers threeyears, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of the scriptand checking the filming.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: “He wanted to make a programme that was entertaining for a general audience as well asscientific and that’s a tough job, given the complexity of the ideasinvolved.”

Hawking has suggested the possibility of alien life before but his views have been clarified by a series of scientific breakthroughs, suchas the discovery, since 1995, of more than 450 planets orbiting distantstars, showing that planets are a common phenomenon.

So far, all the new planets found have been far larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitiveenough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonise its most extreme environments. If life can survive andevolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere is out of bounds.

Hawking’s belief in aliens places him in good scientific company. In his recent Wonders of the Solar System BBC series, Professor Brian Coxbacked the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon ofSaturn, as likely places to look.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the astronomer royal, warned in a lecture earlier this year that aliens might prove to be beyond humanunderstanding.

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive,” he said. “Just as a chimpanzee can’t understandquantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyondthe capacity of our brains.”

Stephen Hawking's Universe begins on the Discovery Channel on Sunday May 9 at 9pm.

Simon, You're A Rich Man

realityrocks-452802957-1272043931_thumb.jpg?ymb22BDDh4ZCfF7LEarlier this week on "Larry King Live," Simon Cowell stated that he had no qualms about leaving "American Idol" after this season and would not miss the show. Well, no wonder. It's pretty easy to quit your day job when you're worth 165 million pounds (approximately $300 million)!

According to Britain's Sunday Times, which just published a "Rich List" of the U.K.'s top 20 music millionaires, Simon has in fact enjoyed a $61.5 million, or 38 percent, pay raise of sorts over the past year. This is mainly due to Susan Boyle, the runner-up on one of his other massive reality-show ventures, "Britain's Got Talent," who is signed to Simon's Syco Music record label. SuBo's debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, was 2009's worldwide biggest sales phenomenon, selling more than 10 million units to date since its November release.

realityrocks-834716701-1272043793_thumb.jpg?ymR02BDDNkzCmTUASimon still isn't Britain's richest music mogul--among those who earn even more are former "American Idol" mentor and theater impresario Andrew Lloyd-Webber, recent "Idol Gives Back" performer Elton John, the Rolling Stones' Mick 'n' Keef, Paul McCartney, Sting, and, most interestingly, "Idol" honcho Simon Fuller. But thanks to SuBo, Cowell has moved up to 11th place on the British millionaires list, even advancing ahead of the Simon Fuller-managed Beckhams, David and Victoria.

I can only imagine that during the interim between his departure from "Idol" and the U.S. launch of his "X Factor" show, Simon will be sitting on a giant pile of British sterling and Susan Boyle CDs, on some private island, eating peeled grapes and cackling maniacally over his good fortune. Either that, or he'll be scrupulously poring over the details of his prenup with future bride Mezhgan Hussainy. But missing his old "American Idol" gig? Um, probably not..

Below is the Sunday Times' full "Rich List":

1. Edgar Bronfman & family (1.64 billion pounds)
2. Clive Calder (1.3 billion pounds)
3. Andrew Lloyd-Webber (700 million pounds)
4. Cameron Mackintosh (635 million pounds)
5. Paul McCartney (475 million pounds)
6. Simon Fuller (350 million pounds)
7. Mick Jagger (190 million pounds)
8. Elton John (185 million pounds)
9. Sting (180 million pounds)
10. Keith Richards (175 million pounds)
11. Simon Cowell (165 million pounds)
12. Olivia & Dhani Harrison (160 million pounds)

From TONY OSAUZO, Benin

Friday, April 23, 2010
About 17 private secondary schools proprietors have been arrested for allegedly forging the signature of the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Ngozi Osarenren in their desperate bid to illegally enroll candidates for the 2010 West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSSCE).

The proprietors were alleged to have gone through the back door to get the clearance of the Ministry of Education to register extra candidates for the examination..

The commissioner, who disclosed this while addressing journalists, said her ministry had put strict measures in place to ensure a hitch-free conduct of the examination, adding that the measures were to plug loopholes that could lead to examination malpractice by some of the private schools.

She explained that schools were expected to obtain clearance from the ministry’s Department of Planning, Research and Statistics using particular form. She added that the clearance involved private schools producing the certificate of approval and renewal fees for three years up to 2008.

“The clearance is, thereafter, taken by the proprietor/proprietress to the Chief Inspector of Education of the school’s Local Government Area where the Chief Inspector of Education clears for the Junior School Certificate Examination Certificates and the number to be enrolled,” Dr. Osarenren explained.

She added that the clearance letter was to be issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Education to the West African Examinations Council for enrolment of a particular number of candidates for the school, after all processes had been checked by Director of Education.

The commissioner announced that 17 schools in Benin City were discovered to have forged her signature and official letter head paper to get clearance for enrolment and promised to release more list of offending schools.
