From GEOFFREY ANYANWU, Awka and EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha
Thursday, March 10, 2011Apparently tired of the lingering crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, thousands of its members, yesterday, defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to lend support to the former governor of the state, Dr. Chris Ngige, in his senatorial ambition.

The PDP members who were mainly from Anaocha Local Government and led by a former chairman of the local government, Mrs. Tina Akonobi, declared for ACN during the flag-off of Ngige’s Anambra Central Senatorial campaign held at the Emmaus House Complex, Awka.
Describing Ngige as the shinning light of the state, the defectors, through Akonobi, said the PDP had frustrated ambitions of many politicians in Anambra State, just as it had made nonsense of internal democracy in political party business. According to Akonobi, “immediately Dr. Ngige joined the senatorial race, we took our decision to dump PDP to follow him because he is the person who gave the people of Anambra State hope during his tenure as governor.
“PDP is a bunch of liars, PDP is a bunch of disgruntled elements, a bunch of miseries to this country. When a big masquerade appears, the small ones will run away. Ngige is the big masquerade in Anambra politics and that is why we chose ACN. ACN does not need to campaign for Ngige because always, he has been accepted and embraced by all the people of the state.”
Addressing the large crowd, Ngige who had earlier caused stir at the major streets of the state capital while on road show said if ACN was voted into power, it would recreate the middle class, which, according to him, had been destroyed over the years as a result of bad governance in Nigeria.
He also promised that ACN would reactivate about 5,000 industries that had gone moribund in Onitsha, Nnewi and Ideato industrial clusters in the South-east, adding that the industries would be reactivated through good legislation that would bring about constant power supply, saying, “we want to put a stop to this cycle of poverty in Anambra State.”.
Dispelling insinuations by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) that ACN was a South-west party, Ngige said it was a party formed by people from various zones of the country, who had the vision of the progressive Nigeria, urging the people to vote ACN massively during the forthcoming election.
Ngige also stated that he would ensure that oversight functions were reintroduced to make contractors handling different projects in the zone accountable, adding that he would sponsor bills for the control of erosion in the state and massive road construction.

12166300684?profile=originalThe glamorous lovers’ day celebration on Monday turned bloody at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) when gunmen killed two students. Daily Sun gathered that the clash was between two rival cult groups, namely, Black Axe and the Buccaneers,’ over a female student allegedly snatched by the Capone of the Black Axe for Valentine celebration.

The action of the Capone , the source said did not go down well with the other group leading to the clash.
A student who witnessed the shooting said besides the two cult members who were shot dead, about four others sustained injuries and were ferried out of the campus by their leaders to shield their identity.

The sources said the cult members who carried out the attack were not UNILAG students but members from another campus, adding that the attack was carried out in a commando style with sporadic shooting.
An undergraduate student of English Department told Daily Sun that the Buccaneers’ group attacked the Black Axe members while another student returning from the Mosque said those who carried out the killing were not from UNILAG because they did not cover their faces.

It was learnt that as soon the shooting started, students scampered for safety while others took cover behind the wall and under cars packed around, while others ran into the halls to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
A senior lecturer who confirmed the killings said the university management had met to curtail any reprisal attack while security personnel had taken over the investigation of the deadly cult clash.
When Daily Sun visited the troubled institution yesterday, there was uneasy calm, as most staff and students rebuffed efforts made by the reporters to get their comments.

However, one of the students who resides at Sodeinde Hall, said there was sporadic gunshots outside the premises which caused panic everywhere.
It was gathered that the crisis, which erupted when the students were at the peak of lovers’ day celebration, created stampede on the campus as people ran for safety.

One of the victims of the attack reportedly ran into Sodeinde Hall for help, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Although the Hall Master of Sodeinde Hall declined comments on the issue, one of the officials, who wouldn’t want his name published, said the attack could not be linked to any cult group. He said there was increasing speculation that the perpetrators of the attack could be fighting for love. Efforts made by Daily Sun our reporter to ascertain the identities of the victims were unsuccessful.
The news bulletin of the university, Information Flash (ISSN 08195540) also captured the incident, while assuring the staff and students of the university of adequate security.

“The attention of the universities authorities has been drawn to the incident which occurred in one of the Halls of Residence in the late hours of Monday, February 14, 2011 where two persons were reportedly injured in fracas. The university management has commenced investigation into the unusual incident, in particular at a time when preparation for the first semester examinations due to commence on February 21, 2011 are in top gear. Security has been intensified to ensure safety of life and property on campus. Law enforcement agents have been involved to assist the university in this respect,” it said.
Daily Sun learnt that students are leaving the campus because of the fear of reprisal attack while some parents called their wards on phone to return home until the situation is brought under control.

The Deputy Registrar Information of UNILAG, Mr. Dare Adebisi refused to pick his calls or replied to text message sent to his phone.
When the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Samuel Jinadu (DSP) was called thrice, he promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area and did not call back as at the press time....

Christ Embassy fraud: Suspects docked, members scold critics
By Chioma Igbokwe

Saturday, April 17, 2010
Hope of getting reprieve by the suspects who were alleged to have defrauded Christ Embassy Church to the tune of N60m has been dashed as all efforts to convince their General Overseer, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome to forgive them failed. The suspects have been charged to court on a two-count charge at Ikoyi High Court and risk being jailed if found guilty.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail. Those arrested are, Chinelo Ezeagwuna, Essien Mabel Ufonabasi, Keneyinboh Miriam Eneyi, Orie Nwakego Felicia and Bassey Bassey Charles.

Saturday Sun reported last week that the suspects who were active members of the healing school, a department of the church, had begged Oyakhilome to apply the principles of forgiveness by dropping the charges against them..

According to the Commissioner for police, Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Moses Sabo, the suspects where arraigned on a two count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing. “ No body is above the law that is why upon completion of the investigation they were charged to court. It is left for the judge to decide what becomes of them.”

As reported in the newspaper, in a bid to be among those who testify in church to speedy progress, four members of the church engaged in what the police suspect is fraudulent in the micro finance bank, popularly known as ‘Parralex’, established in the church’s premises in Lagos. These persons allegedly diverted over N60m into two dedicated personal accounts and shared it.

The bubble burst when operatives of the SFU, Lagos swooped on them. The suspects were alleged to have opened several accounts with the bank, using fake names. The fraudulent account was used to divert the money. They were alleged to have debited the bank’s general ledger and transferred same sum of money to the various fraudulent accounts. This act which started in 2008, continued till 2009 when the fraud was detected.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have condemned the act, blaming the church for deceiving these people into stealing in the name of God.

Some Nigerians who felt scandalized about this sordid development in the house of God reacted accordingly

Sekuru Gora said he is yet to understand how these churches manage to brainwash people to lose their minds. “They prey on peoples greed. The suspects were aware that what they were doing was wrong. They were encouraged by the pastor to get rich quickly by latching at existing opportunities. Prosperity gospel is nothing other than legalized thievery. Religion has been abused especially by these Pentecostal churches. I for one will never be fooled by some greedy men of God to enrich them at any cost. I don’t need to go to church to do well and live a good life. I work hard and help a lot of people, something that most of these churches don’t do.”

On his own part, Kunle, lashed out at the suspects for asking pastor Chris to forgive them instead of blaming them for their act. “Are they not aware that it is the twisted get rich quick gospel that their pastor has been preaching to them that pushes most of his church members to engage in illicit and criminal activities? I am even made to understand that most of the prostitutes in Ikeja attend CEC. What is the church’s business in setting up a micro finance bank in the first instance? Personally I think Pastor Chris should be held accountable for this fraud as he is in the business of breeding criminals.”

While some are blaming the act on Pastor Chris others are of the view that everyman is accountable for his own sin, as Pastor Chris never encouraged them to steal.

Steven asked the suspects to admit that it was their greed not Pastor Chris’s message that led them to steal. “Some people in a congregation steal and blame it on the message they heard. Did the message say go and steal? Their greed for quick wealth led them to do what they did and does not in any way invalidate the message and the existence of members that are obedient to the dictates of the word of God in the same congregation.”

Adebayo Ogunsaya called on the critics of Pastor Chris to listen to his messages and pinpoint where he encourages anyone to steal. “One of the things he emphasized early this year is that the year will not favour a man with criminal tendencies. He said doors of prosperity would be shut against people with such character. He said some people didn’t know that some doors have been shut against them already by criminality. He even went as far as saying that if any one has supplies to do in a contract, minimize the gain, such one should not inflate the amount beyond proportion. You should get to hear his teachings yourself than all these hearsays of yours. Pastor Christ is a balanced teacher and can never condone criminality. If he teaches on prosperity, its only because its scriptural. Paul and Jesus taught on prosperity too. So will you blame Jesus for the criminality of Judas?”

Chioma Onwubiko threw a poser to Christians who are busy condemning Christ Embassy. She asked: “Now for you Christians that worship in the “Perfect Church”, I have this question for you: “Can you beyond reasonable doubt proclaim that the church where you worship is 100% free of those that steal, those that fornicate, those that lie, those that commit murder, those that covet, those that harbour hatred against others, those that commit adultery, love-peddlers, etc”?

“Can you vouch for every member of that your “Perfect Church”, that every single one of them is obedient to every single dictates of the word of God? Can you?”

Very Good Question indeed !

Corps members to get N250,000 for self-employment

AGENCY REPORTER

The Federal Government has concluded arrangements to release N250,000 to any corps member who opts for self-employment after undergoing the national service.

The NYSC Director-General, Brig-Gen. Muharizu Tsiga, made the announcement on Wednesday at Ede, Osun State, while addressing corps members during a familiarisation visit to the orientation camp.

He said government was aware of the hardship faced by fresh graduates after the mandatory one-year service and had taken necessary measures to ease their burden.

Tsiga urged interested corps members to start preparing their feasibility studies and submit them to his office in Abuja, through the state coordinators.

He noted with regret the inconveniences at the various orientation camps, and promised that the scheme would start enforcing the rights of corps members, especially in the provision of comfortable accommodation.

Tsiga said: "Corps members don't have to pay rent. They are expected to be accommodated free. Where there is none, they are to be paid in lieu of accommodation to make them comfortable.

"They also have the right to be redeployed if they have genuine reasons, but must follow due process in facilitating such redeployment at the office of the state coordinator.''

The director-general added that it was wrong for corps members to request for redeployment from his office in Abuja, while sideling the state coordinators.

He warned that he would no longer attend to such requests.

Tsiga explained that the scheme had a mandate of ensuring that nothing negative happened to any corps member, adding that adequate security measures had been provided for them.

"Security agencies will be coming to deliver lectures. We have also asked community leaders to ensure security in their areas of primary assignments. It is, however, important that the corps members are disciplined too,'' he added.

In spite of the resolution by the House of Representatives for the redeployment of Batch ‘A' 2010 NYSC members from Plateau State, some of the corps members have rejected the redeployment.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the Jos Orientation Camp on Thursday, reports that no fewer than 1,015 out of the 1,211 corps members have registered, with more still arriving.

Some of them said that they were ready to serve their fatherland in Plateau, and that the security problem was a national issue not limited to a particular state.

Joshua Danjuma, a youth corps member from Gombe State, said, "I am not seeking for any redeployment because I have made up my mind that since I've already prepared my mind to serve the country, I will definitely stay and serve.

"My advice to government is to provide adequate security for all Nigerians. It is not only in Plateau."

Yetunde Aluko, a corps member from Osun State, said she would not have considered redeployment but for the pressure from her parents and other family members.

Sam Nkwopara, the Head of Public Relations in Plateau NYSC, said that redeployment forms were given to the entire Batch ‘A' corps members but that less than 400 had indicated their interest to redeploy.

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed an order suspending further drafting of fresh graduates to Plateau State to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in the state..

jpeg&STREAMOID=AMuZDydHvLQOyQV9GnlI5C6SYeqqxXXqBcOgKOfTXxR1BD4poEYPjE4SJeKxpT9HnW_PgxgftuECOcfJwS6Jtlp$r8Fy$6AAZ9zyPuHJ25T7a9GKDSxsGxtpmxP0VAUyHL6IDcZHtmM2t7xO$FHdJG95dFi6y2Uma3vSsvPpVyo-

This order came in the wake of the devastating violence that claimed hundreds of lives in a neighbourhood of Jos, the state capital, last Sunday.

The legislative resolution, the second in the week after the massacre, also called on the management of the NYSC to re-deploy serving corps members in Plateau to neighbouring states, even as the government attempts to restore peace to the area.

Saving the people

“I am not a pessimist,” said Ekperikpe Ekpo, a member from Akwa Ibom state, who sponsored the resolution. “But we cannot say as of now, total peace has returned to Jos. We have to find a way to save these people in the event of reprisal attacks.”

The resolution will empower calls from Nigerians who have asked that youth corps members be re-assigned from Plateau state.

However, a few members of the House of Representatives, mostly from the affected state, opposed the proposal. They complained that such an order will imply a failure of the government and a total breakdown of law and order in Plateau state.

Leo Dilkon, who represents Pashkin, Kanke and Kanam Local government areas of the state, said the crisis was concentrated around Jos, and it will be undue punishment on the rest of the state if the youths are withdrawn.

Support for motion

But the motion gathered rapid support after the mention of several cases of slain corps members in several parts of the north including Grace Ushang, whose murder in Borno State last year drew international condemnation, and three members of the scheme who died during the December 2008 fighting in Plateau State.

In the aftermath of such deaths, the government has been advised to reconsider the continued relevance of the scheme and the NYSC has been urged to restrict its posting to certain states.

After the killings of last Sunday, the NYSC Director General, Maharazu Tsiga, reportedly announced that his office will reassign serving members from the state pending the restoration of normalcy.

Lawmakers said although they are aware of the decision, they will push for a legislative resolution to compel the director general to act fast.

“I will be surprised if anyone will oppose the fact that the situation in Plateau poses a clear and present danger, said Patrick Obahiagbon, who represents Oredo in Edo state. “Whether there are newspaper reports that they will be redeployed or not, we have to rise up and make it known that this parliament says no. We cannot send our brothers and sisters to go and pay the ultimate price.”

Women in black

Meanwhile, hundreds of Plateau women clad in black dresses and placards showed up at the premises of the National Assembly, where they held hands, singing sombre songs to protest the latest killings.

The women, who said they will seek the intervention of the United Nations (UN) if they fail to get justice from the Nigerian government, called on the acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, to remove the current General Officer Commanding the 3rd Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army, located in Jos, Plateau State, who has been accused of negligence as the crisis erupted.

“We want a change of the security chiefs in Plateau State, they have not guaranteed any security on us, we have lost confidence in them,” the group’s spokesperson and its secretary general, Zipporah Kpamor, said.

The women also accused the Chief of Army Staff, Abdurahman Danbazzau, as well as the Bauchi State government of complicity in the mayhem in Jos.

“If the FG cannot stop the premeditated genocide and ensure peace in the state, then we will be compelled to go to the United Nations (UN) for intervention on the matter,” Ms. Kpamor said.

NYSC forces pregnancy tests on members

NYSC forces pregnancy tests on members One of the things that Lawal Taiwo (not real name) had to do when she reported at the camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos State was to go for a pregnancy test. Ms. Taiwo, said the exercise, which is mandatory for female youth corps members, was characterised by coercion and neglect, especially as the test was process was conducted in the open. "They (male corps members) had the opportunity to easily take a peep at all us undressing as the registration process was taking place in a hall right in front of the make-shift shed and all young ladies were forced to squat and urinate into small bottles," she said. "Before being allowed to start the registration process, all females were requested to line up behind the lecture hall (in which the registration process was going on). I started queuing at about 8am but was unable to urinate due to the unhygienic and inadequate sanitary conditions. What awaited all females were three holes dug into the ground, merely covered up from one side by dirty mattresses." The National Youth Service Corps scheme, which was established in 1971 to unify Nigeria after the civil war, has run into several controversies. One of the more recent ones is the rule for conducting pregnancy test for female participants. Anyone who refuse to go for the compulsory test or is found pregnant in the course of the test is summarily sent out of the camp. Another female participant at the Lagos State camp, who spoke under anonymity, said the experience was the first time she had a pregnancy test. "I have never taken a pregnancy test in my life and the memory of it will stay stuck in my mind forever," she said. "The test was conducted in such a disgusting condition. When a woman takes a pregnancy test, she should be able to do it in the privacy of her home,or in a decent clinic. Not in a field behind a campsite." The tests were conducted all day. They started the pregnancy tests early in the morning and would end each evening once registration was closed for the day. We would line up in the sun, just for the test," another lady who just passed out of the camp, Joyce Nweze said. Joyce Madaki, the spokesperson for the Lagos State NYSC confirmed the test, but said she could not speak on it except with the directive of the state coordinator of the scheme. "I will have to talk to the state director and if he asked me to grant an interview, then I will and if he said I shouldn't I will let you know, but just note I am not permitted to talk to the press on my own," she said. Policy against women? But women activists are not amused at this practice. The Executive Director of Project Alert, a group promoting rights of women, Joshepine Chukwuma said any test that is gender based is wrong. "If pregnancy tests are conducted for women, then what would they now conduct for men? Such test were supposed to be conducted at one's will and not be forced and not under an unconducive environment." Anns Ajayi, a secondary school principal and self-proclaimed gender rights activist in Osun State said that, "It is all trash. Tell me what women have done again? I think the present NYSC director General should cover his face in shame and just resign. This has never been mentioned in the scheme and it was not part of the law that established it." Ms Taiwo, whose test came out negative, said she would not have participated in the process if not for the need to serve her fatherland. "Though I understand pregnant women and especially nursing mothers not being allowed to serve during this period, I do not find it appropriate to force all prospective female corps members to be treated like animals, to have to pee on command and be harassed by NYSC officials," she said. Missunderstood requirement Going by Decree 24 of 1993, the requirement for participating in the scheme do not include any special gender test but a general medical test that was expected to be carried out by the participants's school or a military hospital. A Millenium Development Goals instructor at one of the orientation camps, Felix Akinmejiwa said the tests were introduced for good reasons. "The tests are necessary, not just the pregnancy test, but it matters the way it is conducted. I find it hard to believe that Lagos camp could have conducted theirs in such a dirty environment, I think there should be an investigation into this," he said. "The truth still remains that some corps members lied about their status, and what they don't know is that it is all for their good. How would someone be pregnant and still be climbing ropes? I mean all their Para-military training? It is for their good."

From DESMOND MGBOH, KanoWednesday, November 11, 2009Pain and anguish have continued to trail the cases of two female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were raped at gunpoint to a state of semi consciousness by a gang of 14 young men at their place of primary assignment in Fagge area of Kano State.advertisementThe corps members, whose identities are being kept secret by the relevant authorities, are of the Yoruba extraction, Daily Sun can confirm. One of them is a native of Lagos State while the other victim hails from Oyo State. The brutal assault, it was gathered, took place at the home of the female corps members, which is situated at the official ‘Corpers lodge’ of Adamu Vice Secondary School, in Fagge. This lodge is located within a walking distance from the secretariat of the Fagge Local Government Council and of a similar distance from the Fagge Divisional Police Station in the heart of the state capital. An eye-witnesse told the Daily Sun that the tragic incident, which occurred after midnight, on the November 3, 2009, had the entire 14-man gang sleeping with the ladies in turns. The raping took place after the gang had scared off the school’s gate men and the male corps members in their midst, locking up the former in a nearby female staff quarters and the latter in a small room in the compound.Spokesman to the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State, Superintendent Baba Mohammed confirmed the ugly incident in a chat with the Daily Sun on Tuesday. He disclosed that, so far four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, even as he pointed out that those in the custody of the police have since denied the commission of the act.Speaking also to the Daily Sun on Tuesday, the principal of Adamu Vice Secondary School , where the heinous act occurred Alhaji Mohammed Garba, said that although the corps members were domiciled in his quarters, they were actually engaged for their primary assignment by a nearby Women Centre , where they are teaching.According to his account of the abuse, “On the 3th of November, 2009, when my watchmen were outside and their fellow corps member were making free calls, they were suddenly invaded by a gang of about 14 men. They asked the maiguards (watchmen) to go inside the female staff quarters and also got the male corps members locked up in one room. The female corps members were already a sleep at the time. At first, the female victims refused to the open their doors, but they were later persuaded by the watchmen and the fellow corps members, who pleaded with them to open the door and avoid being killed”.He went further: “Later on, they opened the door. The gang first collected their money, then their handsets, their wrappers and their foodstuffs, which was in the carton, because one of them was about to travel and had arranged her things. And thereafter, they raped all of them.“When my maiguards (watchmen) saw what had happened, they sneaked through, jumped the window, and went out to inform the police, He said the school had so far shouldered the bills of the medication of the ill fated corps members, who were rushed, after the incident to the Murtala Hospital in the state.Sources close to the Daily Sun revealed that the ladies had since moved out of the lodge to an undisclosed location inside Sabon Garri area, where it was speculated that they were squatting with their Yoruba relatives, many of whom felt aggrieved.Ironically, the Fagge Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Tukur Mohammed, who is supposed to be the guardian of all the corps members posted to his domain, has demonstrated the coldest indifference to the plights of the rape victims. According to the principal, “Up to this time that I am talking to you, the Local Government Chairman has not turned up to take any responsibility for the medication of the victims. It was the school that took them to the hospital and it is the school that has been paying their bills. The NYSC State Coordinator in Kano State, Nuhu Kwage is away for the orientation exercise in Karaye local council but his officials have been on top of the development.

The 2008 Batch C National Youth Service Corps members ended their one-year compulsory national service with passing-out parades (POP) held in all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday. In Lagos, the event was held at the parade ground at the Ikeja Cantonment. According to the state coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ladipo Laniyan, this batch of corps members, who started their service on November 4, 2008 was made up of 1,399 when they were posted to the state. Some were redeployed to other states mostly for health reasons while more were redeployed to Lagos. Mr. Laniyan said 2,013 corps member satisfactorily completed their service while seven are to be remobilised for abandoning their places of primary assignment. The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, was represented by the commissioner for Special Duties, Tola Kasali at the event. In his speech read by Mr. Kasali, the governor appreciated the contribution of the corps members to the development of the state. “At the beginning of your service year 12 months ago, I drew your attention to the various challenges of national development. I am happy to note with interest that you have contributed your quota to nation-building. I wish to formally acknowledge your unparalleled individual and collective contributions to your host communities in the area of community development projects,” he said. The occasion also featured presentation of awards to some outstanding corps members. Michael Olorunfemi, from Kogi State, a graduate of Human Kinetics, was awarded the best corps member in the batch. He won it for a beautification project he carried out at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat. He said he did it because he wanted to compliment the efforts of the state government. After the match past, some of the corps members danced, as the corps band, made up of those still serving, played different tunes while others took photographs and congratulated one another. However, in spite of the excitement, most of the corps members expressed fears. Some of them that spoke to NEXT expressed uncertainty about their future. Felicia Oboma, a graduate of Biochemistry said she is really scared because of the level of unemployment. “We are going to join the labour market like millions of other graduates. It is not funny. The situation is really bad. One is passing out, you don’t know what will come next. Our country is really in a bad time. I’ve started applying in different places hoping that I will be lucky,” Ms. Oboma said. Kayode Mosaku, a graduate of Botany from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, said he has left the future to chance. “I will try all the options possible, throw my CV to everywhere possible and hope for a good response from somewhere. I have friends who have finished NYSC like two years ago and are still at home without jobs. So I think this NYSC programme is not working. If all the money that is used to run the programme is invested in us, maybe someone might be able to set up, since jobs are not available,” Mr. Mosaku said.

-Military investigates A Ukrainian plane loaded with weapons was, on Tuesday night, impounded by Air Force intelligence at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. advertisement Four people; two pilots and two other foreign nationals, who were on board, were arrested, while some Nigerians who attempted to clear the weapons were also arrested. A competent airport source, who confirmed the arrests, told journalists that the Air Force men, who impounded the plane, were on duty at the airport. The plane, painted red and marked UR-CAK, according to sources, was impounded on the arrival terminal at the airport, based on intelligence report. The impounded plane was seen parked at the airport, when the Nigerian Tribune visited the place, with security operatives mounting surveillance while sources said that investigations were on to know the mission and why such weapons were brought into Nigeria. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that security chiefs at the airport were meeting to ensure that the pilot gave details of their mission in Nigeria. Sources at the airport revealed that the plane was going to Malabo, Equitorial Guinea and that it only stopped in Kano to refuel. Those who spoke on the appearance of the plane and its crew gave kudos to the officers at the airport, adding that the flying in of the weapons was a big security threat to Nigeria. The airport workers, while commenting on the development, said that the apprehension of the Ukrainian cargo plane was a job well done by the Nigerian security men. All efforts to speak with the airport commandant of the Nigerian Air Force were unsuccessful. A top officer said he could not speak on the issue at that moment. “You pressmen have to wait till tomorrow or preferably when the investigation might have been completed,” he said. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the story and informed that the military was investigating the circumstances and the owners of the arms on the plane.

Two corps members arrested over open sex

Two corps members serving in Lagos are now guests of the police after they were caught having sex in the open at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Secretariat in Surulere on Thursday. While their colleagues were busy struggling to get posted to areas where they would do their primary assignment, the two suspects preferred to engage in sexual exercise at a corner around the secretariat in the afternoon from where they attracted the attention of the NYSC authorities. Saturday Independent learnt on Friday night that the police were immediately invited to pick them up after the male Corps member, who hails form Benue State, studied Psychology and graduated from the Kogi State University in Ayimgba, told the NYSC authorities that he had the right to have sex anywhere with his female lover. Sources said he told the NYSC authorities that there was no law in the country that indicated where lovers should have sexual intercourse. Although the female Corps member, a former student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, who hails from Imo State, was said to have appeared remorseful, this newspaper learnt that her boyfriend told the NYSC Camp Commandant that he could not hold the sexual urge after not seeing his partner in a long while. Although our correspondent could not confirm how long they have been in the relationship and whether they have got a place for their primary assignment, sources said the NYSC authorities in Lagos are poised to set example with them, hence the police invitation. Contacted on Friday, the police promised to get back to our reporter, which they were yet to do till press time.
