Talks have reached an advanced stage between the Congress for Progressive Change [CPC] and the Action Congress of Nigeria [ACN] to produce General Muhammadu Buhari as presidential candidate of a joint CPC/ACN ticket for the 2011 elections with former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as his running mate, top sources in both parties told Daily Trust in Abuja at the weekend. The sources denied media reports that the talks had collapsed...

High level sources in the two camps confirmed to Daily Trust the possibility of the Buhari/Tinubu ticket but said there are still challenges ahead. Our sources said that though the Tinubu associates feel the ticket is 'perfect' in view of the political strength of the two men in the North and Southwest respectively, some Buhari associates are treading cautiously to avoid compounding the 'erroneous' perception of Buhari as a religious zealot should he run on a Muslim/Muslim ticket in the election.

Some of his associates who reason against the Muslim-Muslim ticket are said to have advised that Buhari should consider picking a running mate from the Southeast. In view of this, they are said to have commenced discussions with some Igbo leaders including former vice president Alex Ekwueme. But CPC leaders who reject the Southeast running mate idea have told the General that there is at present no politician in the South East who has the standing that Asiwaju Tinubu has in the South West.

Tinubu's position was enormously enhanced in political circles by ACN's serial regaining of Edo, Ekiti and Onus states from the PDP through the courts. Even though Ondo State's Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who also toppled the PDP through the courts, officially belongs to the Labour Party, he is seen as another Tinubu ally.

A top source in the ACN who sought anonymity said the Buhari/Tinubu combination is not a serious impediment, and that Nigerians are only going to take it as "another doctrine of necessity." He said he believed that even the Christian Association of Nigeria [CAN] will welcome Tinubu's candidature because of his "sense of justice to the various religions" when he was governor of Lagos State.

The source said, "Nigerians will see it as another doctrine of necessity. We must look at Bola Ahmad Tinubu as a person that is acceptable to the Christians. As a governor, he promoted harmony among all religions. I know that there is a mosque and chapel in the Lagos government house where he ruled for eight years.

I know he returned schools to missionaries, both Muslims and Christians. So I do not see that as a serious impediment. And don't forget that there are certain parts of Nigeria, the south west in particular, where religion doesn't play too much role as a factor in politics. In south west, it is more about personality."

But even if serious talks are revived between the two groups, there are a number of tricky details to contend with. For instance, going by the electoral laws, it is now too late to do a merger of political parties. The question now has to do with the nature of agreement to be entered into, and whether such an agreement will only apply to the presidential election or across board.

Buhari and his associates in the CPC have always insisted on 'alliance' that would give Buhari the presidential slot so that the ACN will produce his running mate. But the ACN had insisted on 'merger' until the time for that elapsed based on the electoral laws.

A high level source in the ACN told Daily Trust that the last thing the ACN will agree to is an 'alliance' with the CPC. The source said it does not have to be a merger so long as it is not an alliance. The fusion he said could be in a name change, "even if it is something like ACPC."

He said the ACN is sceptical about entering into a merger agreement with Buhari because many of the members still believe that he is not yet "democratically domesticated enough" to be trusted to handle an alliance of different parties after winning an election. The fear is that General may not be accessible after election.

"But if we are all in the same political party, there is always a National Executive Committee [NEC] to call him [Buhari] and say look we want this, we don't want this," he said.

It would be recalled that a group of Democratic Peoples Party [DPP] members led by 2007 presidential candidate of the party Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa had agreed with the then Action Congress [AC] and transformed into a new party, the ACN.

Meanwhile there are indications that General Muhammadu Buhari is under pressure within the CPC as a group of key supporters have told him that his only chance of ever becoming president lies in reaching some kind of understanding with a strong political group from the South, in particular the ACN.

Daily Trust learnt that the key allies have insisted that he must explore a working agreement with the ACN since the party has shown some interest in his candidature except if he wants "to go down in history as always being a candidate but never a president."

Buhari was said to have been challenged by the supporters during a meeting in Kaduna last Tuesday. Our source said the group appears to be succeeding as there are fresh moves to revive the stalled talks in order to find some common ground to work on.

Before now, Muhammadu Buhari's stiffness and possible sabotage by some of his close aides had made the CPC/ACN electoral understanding almost impossible, according to competent sources within both parties. The ACN even under its old name, Action Congress [AC] had never hidden its interest in working out an agreement with the two times presidential candidate of the opposition ANPP, now putative candidate of the newly formed CPC as a possible common front to dislodge the ruling PDP.

So far the effort has met with little success even as the national chairman of the ACN Chief Bisi Akande personally went to meet with the former military head of state on the same issue.

When contacted, Engr. Buba Galadima, member of the Board of Trustees of the CPC said the talks with CPC have never broken down as being speculated. He said the contact has moved to "a much higher level."

"There is greater understanding between both sides because we are naturally compatible; we are ideologically compatible and we firmly believe that there must be a change of regime come May 29, 2011. And we are all agreed that there is no sacrifice too much to make for that change to happen," he said.

National Director of Publicity of the ACN Alhaji Lai Mohammed who was contacted on telephone failed to respond to some critical questions but agreed that discussions are going on with various interest groups with a view to defeat the PDP in the 2o11 elections.

"Definitely I know there are still talks. These talks are not restricted to the two political parties. There are even people who are not politicians from all over Nigeria and are trying to talk to leaders of all political parties to come and save Nigeria from collapse. For it is clear that PDP cannot provide the true leadership Nigerians need," he said.

According to a highly placed source, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme will head the committee that would screen those shortlisted and come up with what the source called “ a level headed, focused, acceptable candidate who also has the capacity to step into Atiku’s shoes come 2015” Top on the list is madam Ngozi okonjo Iweala others who may will likely make the list are Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, former Information minister, Emeka Chikelu, Ken Nnnamani, and Charles Soludo

The illegal arms shipment intercepted this week at Nigeria's busiest port came from Belgium through Germany, a navy spokesman said Thursday.

"I can confirm to you that the origin of the impounded consignment of arms, military equipment and vehicles is Belgium. The vessel came to Nigeria via Germany," Captain Kabir Aliyu told AFP.

He said those arrested over the illegal shipment were Nigerians, but refused to give details because of an ongoing investigation.

The shipment, including pistols, hundreds of ammunition, bulletproof jackets, military boots and other related banned items, was seized at the Lagos port weeks after the discovery of a weapons cache sent from Iran.

Aliyu said the military items were packed inside a vehicle painted in army green, while eight heavy duty trucks painted in military camouflage were also impounded.

Small Union Jack stickers had been placed on some of the vehicles, but the spokesman said they seem to have been used as a disguise.

Officials at the Belgian embassy in Nigeria were not immediately available for comments on the latest shipment.

Last month, Nigerian security agents intercepted an illegal arms shipment that included rockets and grenades at the same port which had been loaded in Iran.

Nigeria reported the shipment to the UN Security Council.

Iran is under four sets of UN sanctions for pursuing the programme, which the West suspects is cover for a drive for a nuclear weapon, a charge Tehran denies. The sanctions include a ban on arms sales.

Tensions are rising ahead of next year's general elections in Africa's most populous country of 150 million people, which has witnessed voter fraud and violence.

More Arms Intercepted at Tin Can Island Port

Four men have been arrested and paraded by the Nigerian Navy for illegal importation of military uniforms, boots and ammunition into the country.

The items which were concealed in a car with other personal effects were discovered when security operatives were inspecting a container at the tin can island ports in Apapa.

One of the suspects who claimed to have served in the U.S. military said the items were his personal effects.

It was gathered that the arms were concealed in a jeep inside a container and comprised machine guns, pistols, military uniform and boots.

But the Area Controller of the Command, Mr. Austen Warikoru, told newsmen that, “We are yet to conclude the examination of the container, we cannot say anything now because we will not like to mislead the public, it is better we get our facts right.”

The Customs had about a month ago, impounded 13 containers of rocket launchers, assorted ammunitions, cartridges and other weapons at Apapa Port in which 754 packages of glass wool and stones were declared on the ship’s manifest as contents of the 13 containers.

The National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Azazi (retd.), had assured that those involved in the importation of the arms and ammunition would be arrested.

The NSA said, “At this point, the only thing we can say is that we have some armament we discovered at the port by the security agencies. We don’t want to make any conclusions about where they are going or where they are coming from.”

Customs impounds 12 bulletproof vehicles

image ...types of bullet-proof Sports Utility Vehiclesimpounded by Custom men in Nigeria

FRAUDULENT importers are in for a hard time, Customs said at the weekend.

The Comptroller-in-charge of Customs’ Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Ikeja, Lagos, Mr Emmanuel Kane, disclosed thiswhile announcing the impounding of 12 bullet-proof Sports Utility Vehicles(SUVs) illegally imported into the country.

Kane said: “They will not maker an honest declaration. Somebody will bring in a 2010 vehicle and the agent will tell youto write 2004. I will not allow that and the Service will not allow that becausewe do not bend the rules. They are under declaring and doctoring documents tofavour them. We are not spirits and we work with the documents that we see.“

He said it was worrisome that some disgruntled elements were bent on destroying the economy by importing expensiveSUVs without paying duties to the government.

Kane said between January and last month, Customs operatives seized 65 vehicles from the Tin Can Island Ports. He said theimporters paid N7.2 million instead of N96.8million as import duties, robbinggovernment of the needed funds for developmental projects.

The 12 bullet-proof 2010 Toyota Land Cruizer SUVs were imported by unidentified owners.

Three of the SUVs have already been recovered by operatives.

A car shop on Victoria Island where the other nine were traced has been sealed.

The Nation learnt that only N150,000 was paid as duty on each of the vehicles. The unit cost ranges between N40 millionand N50 million.

The SUVs are two 2010 VXR V8 models and a V8 Land Cruizer.

It is not an offence to use a bullet proof vehicle, but government must know who the end user is and why the person wantsit.

Kane said importers devised ingenious ways of cheating the government at the inception of the E-payment policy, which someimporters and their agents have refused to embrace.

He said operatives of the FOU who were deployed to patrol the Tin Can Island Ports, would remain there until sanity isrestored.

He said two sets of Evaluation Officers who are regarded as their collaborators by the service have been

Ronaldo, Mourinho in cocaine drung shock.

Real Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho were on Sunday night stunned when a neighbour was held by police on suspicion of being one of the world’s biggest drug barons.

Mexican Nicolas Rivera Gamez, 49, was arrested at his mansion in a prestigious part of Madrid for allegedly trafficking £175million of cocaine.

Rivera, who has a fleet of 20 supercars including Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Maseratis and Ferraris, lives just a stone's throw from Ronaldo and Mourinho in the Spanish capital.

Investigators say he was the boss of a gang trafficking millions of pounds worth of cocaine into Europe from South America.

Investigators believe big-spending Rivera, whose house is on the exclusive La Finca estate, blew an average of £10,000 a day in cash.

They reportedly found more than a million pounds in cash in a suitcase in the boot of one of his cars.

Former Manchester United star Ronaldo, 25, owns a £4.3million, seven-bedroom villa in La Finca, while ex-Chelsea boss Mourinho, 47, rents a £17,000-a-month three-story villa down the road.

The ban on the importation of vehicles older than 10 years has been lifted.

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the extension of the age limit of used vehicles that can be imported from 10 years to 15 years.

THE UK has agreed to tighten its cap on migration from outside the UK, but committed not to limit intra-company transfer of qualified employees...

From 2011 onwards the number of skilled and highly skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area allowed to move to the UK will be capped at 21,700 – that is 22.5% fewer than the equivalent figure in 2009.

However, in a victory to multinational companies who had been lobbying hard against limits on their ability to transfer staff between global offices, there will be no limit on intra-company transfer of staff earning £40,000/y or more.

The limit is the highest of a range of options recommended to the government by independent migration advisors. Advisors had recommended curbing immigration at 43,700. That is 6300 less than the 50,000 skilled immigrants from outside the EU who arrived in the UK in 2009. However, the 50,000 arrivals also included 22,000 who were transferred between company offices, hence these 22,000 were subtracted from the maximum.

Tuition fees to triple in the UK

Following David Cameron’s pledge to dramatically reduce immigration the number of foreign student visas will be cut to 120,000.

Home Secretary, Theresa May, unveiled plans yesterday to limit that number of skilled non-European workers allowed to enter Britain to 21,700. Staff with transfer jobs under the same employer in England will be excluded. This allows for a total of between 35,000 and 40,000 skilled workers to enter Britain.

Foreign students make up 60 per cent of migrants to Britain. Therefore, May stated that in the future only those applying for degree courses will be issued a visa...
No place for people enroling into fake schools to run away and hussle

May explained to Parliament that a quarter of those issued visas to study below degree level were unaccounted for. She believes students at these lower levels of education have been abandoning school in favor of living and working. May stated that this must be stopped.
At last measures being taken to stop the fake applications

It is estimated that 40 per cent of the 300,000 current student visas are for education below the degree level. May announced that under this new scheme visas would only be issued for universities, further education colleges and a few specially selected institutions.

Also student fees will rise which will make paying difficult.
Universities in England will be able to charge tuition fees of up to £9,000 per year from 2012, as the government transfers much of the cost of courses from the state to students.

Fees will rise to £6,000, with an upper tier of £9,000 That is N2,139,890

Fees should be payed up front for full tuition which is not refundable to prevent husslers leaving after first term to work.

Rev. Tunde Bakare, senior pastor of Latter Rain Assembly, and convener of Save Nigeria Group (SNG), has denied claim by Sahara reporters that fifty thousand dollars was offered to members of the group as bribe in exchange for their support, during a recent visit with President Goodluck Jonathan. In a telephone conversation with huhuonline.com, Rev Bakare said, “we visited the president, we made our position known to him, and were offered transport money, but we rejected it,based on integrity. “It was not a bribe”, he affirmed

When asked about the alleged Fifty thousand dollars he allegedly returned to the Presidency, Mr.Tony Uranta told huhuonline.com that he did not see any money before, during or after the meeting, and that at no time was money exchanged.

Mr. Uranta lambasted the alleged bribery saga, calling it a distortion of facts.

Our checks reveal that besides Pastor Bakare, other members of SNG present at the meeting were Mr.Odumakin, Mr. Agbaje, and Mr.Adeshoye.President Jonathan`s team included Elder Peter Godsday Orubebe and Tony Uranta.

The alleged bribe giver, Elder Peter Godsday Orubebe, in press statement made available to huhuonline.com said, he had no reason to bribe Save Nigeria Group. Elder Orubebe, who is the incumbent minister of Niger Delta Ministry, opined that “he find these allegations deeply distressing, and he is certain that the
highly respected Pastor Tunde Bakare must have been quoted out of context”

Hear him:

“ I have read, with a deep sense of shock and disappointment, allegations made against me in an on-line medium, claiming that I attempted to bribe the leadership of the Save Nigeria Group, SNG,
after a visit with the president”.

“I find these allegations deeply distressing, and I am certain that the highly respected Pastor Tunde Bakare must have been quoted out of context. I am forced to react to these allegations only because I would consider it an insult for anyone to attempt to bribe someone of that stature, visiting with his group, and with, of all sums, 50,000
dollars”.

“True, a bribe is a bribe, no matter the sum. This is the reason why I am all the more concerned and worried about these claims. What I however find intriguing is that there is absolutely no reason to bribe the Save Nigeria Group. When the body on its own volition rose to challenge the sense of drift that had befallen the country over the illness of our late leader, Mallam Umaru Musa Yar’adua, did anyone bribe them”?

“So it is hard to believe that any right thinking person would attempt to do so now. If a bribe is intended to induce someone to either do something, or to refrain from doing it, what in objective terms would I need to bribe the SNG for at this time”?

“This is a false story that should be dismissed by all right thinking persons”.

Fiery Lagos-based pastor, Tunde Bakare, has confirmed to Saharareporters that President Goodluck Jonathan provided a $50,000 cash bribe to a delegation of the Save Nigeria Group that visited him last Monday, but that the group sent back the money.

Pastor Bakare’s confirmation came in the midst of a tepid denial of our earlier report by Tony Uranta, one of Mr. Jonathan's political operatives. Uranta had claimed on his Facebook page yesterday that Saharareporters misrepresented the crux of the meeting between the president and the Pastor Bakare-led delegation.

Specifically, Uranta denied that Jonathan discussed his ambition to run for office with the SNG delegation. He also stated that no money was offered to the SNG team and claimed that, contrary to our earlier report, the Bakare group had not asked him to return the bribe money to Jonathan.

But in a telephone interview with Saharareporters on Sunday evening, Pastor Bakare confirmed that the details of our earlier exclusive report were factual and unimpeachable.

Bakare, who has a reputation for speaking out fearlessly on current political issues, affirmed that the Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe, had offered the SNG delegation the sum of $50,000 on behalf of President Jonathan. The SNG had met with Jonathan to review his performance in office.

In the phone interview, Pastor Bakare stated categorically that his team was indeed offered money after it submitted a position paper on why it was opposed to the president's ambition to be re-elected. He confirmed that the cash was immediately returned to sender through Uranta, shortly after it was presented to the SNG delegation.

The SNG convener told Saharareporters that his team felt terribly embarrassed and offended by the orchestrated attempt by Jonathan and his team to buy the SNG’s support through illicit means.

An obviously angry Bakare said, “You can quote me. I don't do deals and I don't lie. Tony [Uranta] could be saving his own face. Tony lied that he didn't collect the money from us. There are living witnesses. Orubebe has confirmed to me that the money was returned. Mr. President is aware through Oronto Douglas that we returned his money through Tony.”

Bakare said he, Yinka Odumakin and other SNG officials went to the meeting with Jonathan with a written document that explained why the SNG would not support his candidacy.

“We submitted a document regarding the culture of impunity in which he (Jonathan) continues to swim," he said.

As Saharareporters had exclusively reported, Jonathan sought a meeting with the Save Nigeria Group to discuss his ambition to run for office after it dawned on him that former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, the consensus candidate chosen by the so-called Northern Political Elders Forum, was going to present a stiff political challenge.

A close aide to Mr. Jonathan told Saharareporters that, whilst Atiku is steeped in corruption, the president was also aware that the Atiku group had a dossier on corrupt deals by both Jonathan, his wife and his close associates and advisors, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

After Bakare made his presentation and accused Jonathan of having abused the goodwill offered him by Nigerians, the president tried to buy the group’s loyalty by giving its officials $50,000 through Orubebe.

An Abuja-based democratic activist told Saharareporters that, by attempting to buy the SNG's support, Mr. Jonathan had “exposed himself to charges of hypocrisy and doing the opposite of what he preaches.”

In a speech on Saturday, Mr. Jonathan had urged Nigerians to ignore politicians who seek to win elections by offering money to groups and individuals....The president gave the do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do sermon at the 2010 graduation ceremony of the Senior Executive Course 32 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State. Vice President Namadi Sambo represented the president at the event and read the speech on Jonathan’s behalf.

Scores of African MBA students from America’s leading business schools drew inspiration from the Tony Elumelu story at Wharton Business School in Philadelphia, United States of America at the weekend, and were encouraged to pursue their dreams using the same basics of hard work; discipline and visioning that have helped Tony Elumelu achieve unprecedented success.

The occasion was the 18th Wharton Africa Business Forum (WABF) themed: “A Blueprint for Africa: Navigating the World’s Fastest Growing Continent” where Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, addressed students, academics and others with business interests in Africa, on November 20, 2010.

With the global business community’s growing interest and involvement in Africa, Tony Elumelu, who spoke on “Perception and Reality - One African Entrepreneur’s Journey,” shared timely and invaluable insights on doing business in Africa as he drew on his experience in building United Bank for Africa (UBA) into a pan African financial institution.

In his role as CEO of UBA, he transformed a Nigerian bank into a global institution - now operating in 18 African countries and across 3 continents. "If I had left the shores of Nigeria, I would not be what I am today and I may not have been in a position to take advantage of the boundless opportunities in Africa. The right people have been a critical ingredient in enabling me to actualize my vision and achieve set goals,” said Mr. Elumelu. ...

Compelled by his own achievements and flanked by a backdrop quoting a statement he made in 1998 at a Standard Trust Bank Town Hall meeting, “today we may appear young and people may not believe in us, but we are going to compel them to believe in us through our achievements”, Tony Elumelu encouraged students to rise and take the opportunities now available in Africa. Other lessons shared included the need to consistently adapt vision and goals to align with strategy, the importance of brand building and the deployment of African solutions. “If I can do it, you can too.” Elumelu emphasized.

The founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation also urged his peers to think broadly about the value creation for stakeholders and noted the importance of balance and timing for social responsibility.

"I call on Africans who have succeeded as entrepreneurs to start giving back to Africa. To do as Gates and Buffet have done, and make a difference in Africa. We must all join hands in the 21st century and ask ourselves where Africa will be ten years from now and what role each of us will play. We need to make Africa a proud part of the 21st century world community."

Looking forward to developing the private sector through the philanthropic and entrepreneurial work of The Elumelu Foundation and investing in the key sectors across Africa through Heirs Holdings, as a formula for ultimately impacting the economic development of the continent, Elumelu said: “I want to spend my time, my resources, and my experience building a legacy for Africa.”

Tony Elumelu is the Chairman of Heirs Holdings Limited, a principal investment company, primarily focused on Financial Services, Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Healthcare within Africa. He is also responsible for the creation of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit institution dedicated to the promotion and celebration of excellence in business leadership and entrepreneurship across Africa.

Both organizations are a direct consequence of Tony Elumelu’s entrepreneurial and philanthropic passions, fuelled by his desire to nurture a new crop of African leaders committed to Africa’s development.

Tony Elumelu is widely acknowledged as one of Africa's most influential business leaders. His corporate reputation was founded on his role in re-shaping the African financial services industry, as the driving force behind the United Bank for Africa Plc.

Jews as High Technology Entrepreneurs and Managers

Jews have traditionally been seen as prominent in such industries as finance, merchandising, apparel, textiles, entertainment, media, and publishing. And in most of them, Jews were true pioneers. They
played leading roles as those industries emerged on the scene.

Their disproportionate importance to the contemporary world of 24/7 competitive high technology is less well known, but they have flourished there as well. It plays to their strengths. High
technology demands a solid grounding in the underlying science or
engineering and that typically calls for college, and sometimes a
post graduate education. Demographically, Jews are better educated
than their peers. An earlier chapter pointed out the high levels of
Jewish enrollment at leading public and private universities.

The National Jewish Population Survey 2000-01 goes further. It points out that:

"More than half of all Jewish Adults (55%) received a college degree and a quarter (25%) earned a graduate degree." "The Comparable figures for the total U.S. population are 29% and 6%." As a result,

"More than 60% of all employed Jews are in one of the three highest status job categories: professional or technical (41%), management and executive (13%) and business and finance (7%)." "In
contrast, 46% of all Americans work in these three high status areas,
29% in professional or technical jobs, 12% in management and
executive positions and 5% in business and finance."

Jews also tend to be disproportionately entrepreneurial, working where they will succeed or fail based on their own efforts. Andrew Grove's decision to stop writing, and instead to pursue science,
illustrates the point. Judgments about writers are often subjective
while those about science are much less so. Grove wanted to work in a
field where he would be judged on his own performance. He chose
chemistry and got his Ph.D. After several years working with the best
and brightest at Fairchild Semiconductor, he left to become one of
the three founders of Intel.

Technology is a high risk meritocracy. While even the most talented people sometimes fail, and fortune can obliterate the most brilliant of plans; technology is not political. Relationships and
initial funding will carry a venture only so far. Ultimately it must
succeed or fail on its own merits in a volatile, highly competitive
arena. Such risky opportunities can be pursued in hospitable
climates, such as the United States, and in such environments, Jewish
entrepreneurs have done well. They:

  • Created the world's largest and most valuable personal computer company; (Michael Dell, Dell Computers)
  • facebook Social Network Owner zuckerberg
  • Co-founded the world's most successful search engine; (Sergy Brin, Google)
  • Head the world's largest software company; (Steve Ballmer, Microsoft)
  • Co-founded and head the world's second largest software company; (Larry Ellison, Oracle)
  • Co-founded, led and served as Chairman of the dominant microprocessor and memory chip company whose products drive most of today's personal computers; (Andrew Grove, Intel)
  • Created the first "killer application" software which ignited demand for personal computers; (Mitch Kapor, Lotus 123)
  • Served as Number 1 or 2 person in three of the world's four most valuable Internet companies according to a May 2004 Fortune study (Terry Semmel at Yahoo, Jeff Skoll at e-Bay and Barry
    Diller at IAC)
  • Co-founded and head the communications protocol/chip company whose technology is the market leader in U.S. cell phones and is likely to be the world leader as the next generation cell
phone technology (3G) is adopted worldwide. (Irwin Jacobs,
    Qualcomm).

And that is only the barest overview:

Dell: Michael Dell and Larry Ellison (of Oracle) share the distinction of being two of the most successful college dropouts in history. (Non-Jew Bill Gates is a third.) Dell quit the
University of Texas in 1985 when he was 19 years old to start Dell
Computer Corporation with a $1,000 stake. His idea was to "cut out
the middleman" by selling personal computers (PCs) directly to
customers.

Dell's combination of custom built computers, excellent product quality, superb customer service, outstanding production efficiency, and low prices created the world's largest computer manufacturing
company. In achieving that distinction, he took on IBM, Compaq,
Hewlett Packard, Toshiba, and many other PC makers, most of them much
bigger and better financed than Dell.

He is emblematic of the creative, determined nature of successful entrepreneurs. In the process, he made his company one of the most valuable in the world. In 1992, Dell became the youngest CEO in
history to earn a spot on the Fortune 500 when his Company had been
in existence for only eight years. With fiscal year 2005 sales of $53
billion, Dell has humbled most competitors. Despite the challenges
of rapid growth and competitive success, Dell and its founder are
consistently counted as among America's most respected.

The success has earned 40 year old Dell a fortune, sufficient, till his most recent birthday, to consistently place him among Fortune's "40 under 40." These are all young entrepreneurs, athletes
and entertainers who have achieved stellar success before reaching
age 40. With his wife, Dell has created the Michael & Susan Dell
Foundation, endowing it with more than $1 billion. Its focus is the
health, education, safety, care and development of children. Among
its recent commitments was $130 million to help boost high school
graduation and college attendance rates in Texas.

Google: Sergy Brin is the son of Russian Jewish emigrants who left the Soviet Union in 1979 to escape persecution. Sergy was six at the time. Mathematically inclined, he earned a
computer science degree from University of Maryland before entering
Stanford as a postgraduate student. There he met non-Jew, Larry Page,
also studying for his doctorate. Together, they developed a search
engine - called BackRub before they renamed it Google.

They dropped out of Stanford, rounded up $1 million from friends, family and angel venture investors and on September 7, 1998, launched Google. Less than ten years old, it is the most popular search
engine on the Web with more than eighty-two million users each month
accessing more than eight billion Web site pages (twice the
comparable 2004 figure). It employs more than 4,000 people and has
had a spectacular run up in its stock price to a value of roughly $80
billion in mid 2005.

Microsoft: Steve Ballmer did not found Microsoft. Non-Jews Bill Gates and Paul Allen did. They started the Company in 1976, five years after they began programming together while
attending Lakeside High School in Seattle where they had access to
the school's computer. Gates went off to Harvard where he and Ballmer
became good friends. Ballmer was a bright Jewish kid from Detroit
who scored a perfect 800 on his math SATs and who took it upon
himself to "socialize" Gates at Harvard - until Gates dropped out to
start Microsoft. About the same time, Paul Allen dropped out of
Washington State and together Gates and Allen launched the Company.

Gates tried to convince Ballmer to drop out as well, but instead, Ballmer stayed in school, going on to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard in 1977. He worked for Proctor and Gamble for two years and
then entered Stanford Business School. Perhaps just to "fit in," he
then dropped out of Stanford Business School in 1980 after Gates had
made yet one more appeal for him to join Microsoft. Ballmer was the
Company's twenty-fourth employee.

Within three years Paul Allen was gone, the result of a bout with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Ballmer served first as the Company's financial disciplinarian and later became the number two guy, holding down
every senior job in the Company before being named President in 1998
and CEO in 2000. Known for his determination and salesmanship,
Ballmer has been vital to Microsoft's success.

Oracle: Larry Ellison is a University of Chicago dropout. He was one of the three (later four) partners who founded Oracle Corporation in 1977. Ellison, the leader, read an IBM article
about a new kind of software termed a "relational database." Then
commonly acknowledged as a revolutionary new way to build a database,
no one, not even at IBM, thought it was commercially viable. Ellison
disagreed and with $2,000, the partners began developing the
software, using cash generated from consulting projects to augment
the $2,000.

Of the four founders, two later left the company and one died. But from the start, it was Ellison that was, and still is, the driving force behind Oracle. "Relentless," "determined," and "ruthless" are
among terms commonly used to describe him. He has been schooled in
Japanese approaches to business where anything less than 100 percent
market share is not enough.

His strong ego is characterized by the titles of two books about him. The first is titled, "The Difference Between God and Larry Ellison." It is the first line of an old Silicon Valley joke for
which the punch line is "God does not think he is Larry Ellison." The
second book is Everyone Else Must Fail, for which the preamble is
"It is not good enough that I should succeed."

Ellison was born to an unmarried Jewish teenage mother and an Italian-American air force pilot father, but he grew up with an aunt, and an uncle who constantly put young Larry down saying he would
never amount to anything. Harvard Business School's Entrepreneur of
the Year in 1990, the 2004 Forbes' 400 lists Ellison as the world's
ninth wealthiest person.

Ellison has devoted roughly half a billion dollars to charities, particularly a medical foundation focused mostly on infectious diseases in the third world and diseases of aging. In mid 2005, he
also pledged $115 million to Harvard University.

Intel: As noted in the Andrew Grove bio, Intel was formed in 1968 by non-Jews Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore who recruited Grove to be their co-founder and third employee. Their
established reputations and ability to raise the needed $2.5 million
from venture capitalist Arthur Rock financed the Company, Noyce
headed up sales and Marketing, Moore R&D, while Grove headed
manufacturing and product development. Grove disciplined the
organization to set and reach goals and he made the critical
decisions, such committing Intel to the microprocessors which made
Intel the huge success it is.

Lotus: Mitch Kapor did not invent the spreadsheet, but his software program, Lotus 123, was the first application to spawn huge demand for personal computers. Visicalc, an earlier
spreadsheet program created by Jew Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston in
1982, was available on several early computers including the Apple II
a few years before Lotus 123 arrived. But Lotus 123 had many more
features, was easier to use, and had far better graphics. It provided
the compelling reason for consumers to buy personal computers and
demand was so strong, Lotus grossed $53 million in its first year and
$156 million by 1984. Kapor went on to create other major software
programs including Lotus Agenda.

eBay: Jeff Skoll did not create eBay, non-Jew Pierre Omidyar did in 1993. For Omidyar, born to French and Iranian parents, creating an on-line auction Web-site was a Labor Day weekend
hobby project. For its first couple of years, it was simply a free
Web-site Omidyar ran on his own home page along with several other of
his Web page creations. During the first few months, he tried to
recruit Skoll, a Jewish French-Canadian he met through friends, to
become his partner. Skoll turned him down, choosing to remain at
Stanford Business School.

In early 1996, Omidyar's Internet service provider began charging him $250 a month to host the site. Omidyar was forced to start charging a fee, which he passed along to the site's users based on
the sale price of auction items. As the checks started rolling in
Omidyar realized he needed help. Again, he approached Skoll. This
time, after a few months of consulting for eBay, Skoll signed on as
its first full time employee and President.

Skoll grew up in Canada and showed early signs of being a driven entrepreneur. At twelve, he was selling Amway products door-to-door. After graduating from the University of Toronto with a 4.0 grade
point average, he set up two high tech companies before moving to
Palo Alto to enroll at Stanford Business School. Compensating for
Omidyar's easy going ways and enjoyment of programming, Skoll was the
driven leader who planned the business and made things happen. He
hired key people, established much of the culture, and constantly
pushed to build the business.

The result is the number one auction Web site in the world. It grossed $3.9 billion in 2004, netted $936 million and was worth $53 billion by mid 2005, all of which made both Omidyar and Skoll very
wealthy. Skoll has since left eBay and now devotes the bulk of his
time to philanthropic activities, particularly his Skoll Foundation
to which he has donated $250 million. The Foundation supports social
entrepreneurs working to effect lasting positive social changes
worldwide. In 2003, Skoll won recognition from Business Week magazine
as "one of the most innovative philanthropists of the past decade"

InterActive Corp (IAC): Barry Diller has made a career of corporate transformations. He started in the mail room at the William Morris Agency in his early 20s, and at age 24, moved to
ABC-TV. Within three years, he was Vice President of Feature Films
and Program Development. In that job he inaugurated ABC's Movie of
the Week, the most popular movie series in television history. At ABC
Diller pioneered highly profitable "made-for-television" films which
focused on social issues such as homosexuality, the Vietnam War and
drugs.

In 1974, following that success (and still only 32), he was named President of Paramount Pictures. At Paramount, he oversaw creation of the hit television series: Cheers, Taxi, and Laverne and Shirley,
and hit movies including: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saturday Night
Fever and Grease. Ten years later he moved to Twentieth Century-FOX
where in 1985, after Rupert Murdoch took over, he launched Fox as the
fourth television network. By 1990, Diller had Fox producing five
nights of prime time television with such popular shows as: The
Simpsons, Married With Children, Cops and America's Most Wanted.

Diller quit Fox to purchase a stake in QVC, the cable shopping network, and from there he launched an unsuccessful bid to take over Paramount. Sumner Redstone's Viacom beat him out. Shortly thereafter,
in 1995, non-Jew John Malone recruited Diller to leave QVC, invest
in and run Liberty Media's Silver King Communications, which was
broadcasting the Home Shopping Network. Diller later merged Home
Shopping into Silver King.

Through a blinding series of name changes, strategic redirections and $8 billion worth of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and investments in more than 45 companies, Diller created what is now
called Interactive Corp (IAC), the fifth major Internet Company,
(behind Google, Amazon, e-Bay, and Yahoo). Little known to the
general public, IAC controls such prominent Internet names as:
Expedia, Hotels.com, Lending Tree, Hotwire.com, Evite, Citysearch and
Ticketmaster.

Over the years, Diller has served as a director of Coca Cola and the Washington Post, Trustee of New York University, member of the Executive Board for Medical Sciences at UCLA, member of the Board of
Councilors of USC's School of Cinema-Television and a member of the
Board of the Museum of Television and Radio.

Yahoo: Terry Semel did not create Yahoo. Non-Jews Jerry Yang and David Filo did in 1994, as a hobby, while pursuing their electrical engineering PhD's at Stanford. In those halcyon,
"early bubble" days, Yahoo went public within two years. It was then,
and still is today, regarded as one of the major Internet successes
of all time, but along the way, it hit a bump in the road. In 2001,
Yahoo lost $93 million on revenues of $717 million. The stock
tanked and new talent was needed to avert a melt down.

That is when Terry Semel arrived. Semel had 24 years at Warner Brothers where he had been instrumental in building the Company from $1 billion to $11 billion in annual revenues. Semel quickly pushed
Yahoo's marketing, consumers' services and acquisitions and by 2003,
he had turned the company around. In 2004, Yahoo made $1.6 billion
under his leadership.

Qualcomm: Irwin Jacobs is listed as one of seven Qualcomm founders, but by any measure, he has been the "essential man" from Qualcomm's 1985 inception till now.

Qualcomm created and controls Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA), a major wireless telecommunications technology. It is the most widely used wireless calling technology in the United States,
(47 percent market share) used by such carriers as Verizon, Cingular,
and Sprint. Around the world, 212 million wireless phones already
utilize Qualcomm technology and as 3G, the next generation of
wireless, is deployed, Qualcomm is expected to become the
international market leader as well.

Jacobs grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a mediocre musician, but an excellent student earning a bachelors degree from Cornell and a Masters and a Doctor of Science degree from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He taught at MIT and the
University of California San Diego (UCSD) from 1959 to 1972.

While teaching, he wrote a still used college text, Principles of Communications Engineering, and in 1969, co-founded LINKABIT, a company he describes as his initial move towards becoming an
"academic dropout." That finally happened in 1972 when he became
LINKABIT's full time President and Chairman. The Company pioneered
satellite TV receiver technology (VideoCipher) and was the first to
commercially introduce Time Division Multiplex Access (TDMA), the
predecessor technology to CDMA. Jacobs built LINKABIT to 1,400
employees, before merging it with M/A-COM and he served on that Board
until 1985.

Initially, Qualcomm did research and development and some manufacturing for wireless companies while it built the largest satellite-based messaging service used by trucking companies to
manage their fleets. That service was quickly overshadowed, however,
by CDMA. By 2004, CDMA was generating over $5 billion in annual
revenues.

All of this has made Jacobs (and his fellow founders) quite wealthy. Jacobs has responded with major philanthropy. He and his wife have given $110 million to the San Diego Symphony (hearkening
back to his days as a mediocre musician), another $110 million went
to the UCSD to "support the other faculty that are currently doing
the teaching," $7 million went to the Salk Institute, and millions
more has gone to support the San Diego Food Bank and historic New
Bedford. Both he, and fellow Qualcomm founder Andrew Viterbi now have
schools of engineering named after them, Jacobs at UCSD and Viterbi
and the University of Southern California.

RealNetworks: Ron Glaser takes credit for creating the first technology to "stream" audio, video, and other digital content, such as music and games, to computers. He founded
RealNetworks in 1994 to capitalize on the technology.

Fresh out of Yale with degrees in economics and computer sciences, Glaser joined Microsoft in 1983 where he rose, over his ten years there, to become Vice President of Multimedia and Consumer Systems.
He left Microsoft in 1994 and shortly thereafter, says he downloaded
Mosaic, an early version of the Netscape Internet browser. He
immediately saw the potential to augment the browser with
"streaming." He founded RealNetworks and was soon able to take it
public. It became a hot Internet stock and, for a time, Glaser was a
billionaire.

Today, following the bursting of the Internet bubble and heightened competition with Microsoft's Media Player and Apple's Quicktime, RealNetworks continues to post operating losses and it is
taking on Microsoft in court. Like earlier Federal and state lawsuits
against Microsoft, Glaser's company claims Microsoft competes
unfairly by bundling its Mediaplayer into its software. Win or lose,
RealNetworks has sufficient cash to finance itself for some time and
thus remain a major Internet force, particularly as the downloading
of music and games becomes ever more prolific. If RealNetworks
succeeds, Glaser will rejoin the ranks of billionaires who hit it big
with their Internet technology innovations.

Broadcast.com & HDNet: Mark Cuban grew up poor, the son of Russian Jewish emigrants in blue collar Pittsburgh. He was a bright student who was also considered something of a hustler
with his native selling ability (selling garbage bags, greeting cards
and magazines, all door-to-door, from the time he was 12.) At the
University of Indiana he started a chain letter and gave disco
dancing lessons to pay for school.

After graduating in 1983 he started a computer consulting firm, MicroSolutions, though he neither owned, nor knew much about, computers. Self-taught by having to learn to perform on the promises
he made to customers, he built the Company to revenues of $30 million
a year before selling it to Compuserve. He made himself wealthy in
the process.

He then "kicked back" for a few years, before returning in 1995, with partner Todd R. Wagner (not Jewish), to create Broadcast.com. It pioneered radio and television broadcasting over the Internet. Cuban
and Wagner soon took it public and, in 1999, sold it to Yahoo for
$5.7 billion. Cuban and Wagner were billionaires.

His attention then shifted to his ownership of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. Cuban is a brash, avid, courtside presence whose outbursts have cost him an estimated $1 million in fines. At
the same time, his savvy marketing and recruiting of top talent has
converted the Mavericks from a perennial loser to a contender.

Cuban also launched HDNet, a high definition television broadcast network available on satellite, cable, and selected over the air high definition broadcast stations. He and Wagner also purchased Landmark
theaters, a large U.S. chain of "art-house" movie theaters which
will air the high definition movies he is producing and the films he
has contracted six major studios to convert from film to digital.

Measures of entrepreneurial success

One measure of entrepreneurial success is provided by the Fortune "40 Under 40" annual list of the wealthiest young Americans, nearly all of them self made. Though entrepreneurial success is not simply
about wealth, it is one scorecard. The Fortune's 2004 list is
included as Exhibit 16a. While it includes thirteen athletes and
entertainers, the remaining twenty-seven are successful young
entrepreneurs, mostly from high technology companies they started or
led. Of the twenty-seven, at least six are Jewish. Three of them are
among the top five and five of them among the top ten. In order, the
six include: #1 Michael Dell, #3 Jeff Skoll, #5 Sergey Brin, #9 Dan
Snyder, #10, Marc Benioff, and #17 Jerry Greenberg. Statistically, at
two percent of the U.S. population, Jews would be lucky if even one
of the twenty-seven was Jewish. At 22 percent, the result is ten
times what one would expect.

The Forbes 400 corroborates the Fortune list. (Exhibit 16b) Of the year 2004 ranking, at least 25 percent of the "400" are Jewish. And like the Fortune "40 Under 40," many of them made their wealth as
entrepreneurs who started successful businesses. Prominent among the
first twenty-five are #9 Michael Dell, #10 Lawrence Ellison, and #11
Steven Balmer. As with the Fortune 40, the performance defies
expectations. We would expect perhaps eight Jews among the 400, the
actual figure (at least 102) is twelve times that.

OMG, A Jewish History of the Internet

Did you know that the internet is Jewish? Yeah...Moses got the Torah from HaShem on Mt. Sinai and HaShem told Moses that his brother Aaron and his descendants would be Kohenim forever. Now a "Kohen" is
a priest and the story of the internet involves a Jewish priest, a
Jewish painter, a Jewish Scotsman and a Jewish sugar merchant living
high in the mountains...well sort of...

In 1972, at the International Computer Communication Conference, Robert Kahn (a kohen) was able to connect 40 different computers revealing his work to the public for the first time. Just three years
later David Farber (whose Yiddish family name means “painter”)
worked to create a primitive kind of email system. Within the next
twenty years the internet that we now know and love was born. In 2003
MySpace was launched and by 2006 it had become the largest social
networking site in the United States. MySpace added a new dimension
to how we communicate and share information with our friends, family
and even religious communities. The website was co-founded by Tom
Anderson. Although Tom’s last name reflects his father’s Scottish
heritage, he and his mother are Jewish and he was raised in a
messianic Jewish household. At the age of 14 Tom was a computer
hacker working his mischief under the tag name Lord Flathead (not a
Jewish name). He lead a team of hackers that were able to brake in
to Chase Manhattan Bank computers, he tampered with banking records
and left a message saying that unless he was given free use of the
system he would wipeout the records. He must have been praying
because he was never charged with the crime :) The website Tom would
later become famous for inspired a 23-year-old Mark Zuckerberg (a
Jewish name meaning “sugar mountain”) to create another social
networking site called Facebook. Things are looking sweeter then a
pile of sugar for Zuckerberg because Facebook has made him over a
billion dollars and more people can be found on his networking site
then in the entire country of Japan.

…So we see that many key players in the field of computer technologies are our fellow tribesmen. The internet itself has even been compared to the Talmud…layers upon layers of commentary dealing
with issues from personal hygiene to oven construction. However the
internet is only truly comparable to the Talmud if it’s dialogue
eventually returns to G-dly matters. The Talmud finds a way to
elevate even mundane and seemingly secular matters to a level of
Torah. We should do the same with our technologies, only then do they
become truly Jewish....

Jews On The Internet

By Larry Kuperman

July 29, 2007

The question of how many Jews there are begs the definition of "What is a Jew?" and also "Who is a Jew?" Questions that have been asked many a time.....mostly by other Jews. Being a Secular Jew
myself, I like the most liberal, inclusive definition that
includes....well ME. The biggest number that you will see is about 18
million Jews. This works out to something like 1/4 of one per cent
of the world's population. So you would expect that our impact on the
Internet would be proportional to our numbers....

Not so, bubbala. (A term of endearment, darling. Can you feel me virtually pinching your cheek? In a nice way.) The impact of Jews far outweighs their numbers. Lets look at "Who's A Yid?"

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of Google. Larry Page's mom, Gloria Page, is Jewish. Sergey Brin was born in Moscow, Russia, to Jewish parents, Michael and Eugenia, who fled to America for
religious freedom.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, while he was a student at Harvard University. It was originally going to be limited to Harvard students, but expanded quickly. Zuckerberg saw the potential in the
site and sought capital. He turned to Peter Thiel, a co-founder of
Paypal and, not-so-coincidentally, also Jewish. Facebook is often
rumored to be up for sale. How much is Facebook worth? Let me refer
that to Mr. Thiel: "Facebook's internal valuation is around $8
billion based on their projected revenues of $1 billion by 2015."
Founder Mark Zuckerberg is 23, or as we like to say, 10 years past
his Bar Mitzvah.

Robert Kevin Rose is, comparatively, an old man at age 30. He is best known for founding Digg.com. Robert lost his job during the burst of the Dot Com bubble, ended up working as a production
assistant on the show The Screen Savers He began appearing on air and
stepped in as host after Leo Laporte left TechTV. On November 1,
2004, he started a site that combined social bookmarking, blogging,
RSS into arguably the premier tech news site. Today Digg is rated
among the 100 most popular sites on the web.

Scott Blum has been referred to as the "Sam Walton of e-commerce." Leaving a successful career as a shoe salesman as a youth, he founded Microbanks, a company that sold add-on memory modules for
Macintosh computers. Before his 21st birthday, he sold Microbanks to
Sentron Technology in San Diego for $2.5 million in cash. He would
then co-found Pinnacle Micro with his father. Leaving there under a
cloud of dubious accounting practices (he paid no penalty and
admitted no guilt) he would go on to found Buy.com. He left before
went public, returned to take it back private and it is now his baby.

RealNetworks is not the most beloved company in the world, nor is Real Player a favorite product. But there is no question that CEO and Founder Rob Glaser has been influential. When he founded Real
Networks in 1994, at age 31, he was already a millionaire from his
days at Microsoft. He has had a major impact on the Internet.

Certainly also worth mentioning are Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, whose mother is Jewish; Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle, who was born on the Lower East Side of New York to a Jewish mother
and raised by his great-aunt and great-uncle in Chicago; and Phillipe
Kahn, founder of Borland.

What would the Internet be like with Google, PayPal, Facebook, Digg.com, Buy.com? It would be very, very different.

Atiku Motorcade kills 2 people

PHOTO: FORMER VICE PRESIDENT AND PDP PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT, ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR WAVES TO SUPPORTERS AT THE YOLA AIRPORT ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2010 JUST BEFORE THE ACCIDENT THAT KILLED TWO PERSONS.

Nov 27, (THEWILL) – The motorcade of former Vice President and consensus Presidential candidate of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Friday evening in Yola, Adamawa State, rammed into a crowd of supporters killing two persons and causing severe injuries to more than 15 others.

We gathered that three victims are currently hospitalized at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Federal Medical Centre in the city while others are at the Yola Specialist Hospital.

Atiku Abubakar was in Yola to attend the traditional marriage ceremony of one of his daughters who wedded a governorship aspirant in the state, Adamu Muazu Modibbo when a Toyota Prado SUV in his 16-campaign vehicle convoy swerved off the road along Galadima Aminu Way where supporters had packed to salute the politician..

One of those killed identified as Muji Mohammed was on a motorcycle chanting ‘Sai Turaki, Sai Turaki' when the driver of the SUV lost control and rammed into motorbike and thereafter triggered a multiple car crash that saw all the SUV’s smashing into each other, an eyewitness said.

Attempts to reach Atiku's Campaign Organisation for comments on the fatal incident were unsuccessful

Rafael Nadal refused to use fatigue as an excuse on Sunday after his incredible year ended in defeat by Roger Federer at the ATP World Tour Finals.

The 24-year-old world number one played one of the matches of the year to battle past Andy Murray in a three-hour semi-final but he found Federer in sensational form as he went down 6-3 3-6 6-1 in one hour 37 minutes.

"I think is not the right moment to talk about that," Nadal told reporters when asked if he was suffering physically against the 16-times grand slam champion.

"The thing is everybody saw the match yesterday, so everybody's free to think his own opinion..

"But I'm not gonna say I lost the match because I was tired. What I'm gonna say and what I feel is I lost the match because I played against a very good Roger Federer on one of his favorite surfaces. When he's playing like this, it's very difficult to stop him. I had chances, but not enough."

Rather than dwell on his defeat, Nadal preferred to look back on a year he described as the most "emotional" of his career.

After going 11 months without a title he returned to form in Monte Carlo in the Spring, winning on the Riviera clay for a sixth consecutive year, and the confidence flooded back.

From then on he was virtually unstoppable, winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back for a second time and completing his career grand slam by winning the U.S. Open.

It was all a stark contrast to 12 months ago at the London finale when he failed to win a set in three matches.

"This was a fantastic week for me," Nadal said. "Beating four top-eight players in the same week on a difficult surface for me. I think that's never happened in the past.

"There have been a lot important moments for me during the season. I think it was a very emotional season.

"There were difficult moments in the beginning, but after a tough time, I was able to play with ambition all the season and I managed to have chances to win and keep winning.

"Once I won the first tournament in Monte Carlo, everything was easier, all the pressure and anxiety left and I started to play really well."

Mrs. Mary Oshemi has the unique honour of being the second oldest woman in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, in Edo State. The grand old woman, in this interview with JAMES AZANIA, reminisces on old times, including periods when stories about slavery did not appear too distant, and she and her peers made for the bush at the sight of the white man.

Mary Oshemi

It took grandmother Mary Oshemi less than 25 minutes of getting to her home to get set for this interview; and by the time she walked into the sitting room, the delay was to enable her three other children to join Peter, a former vice-chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area and the youngest, for the interview to commence. Immediately the others, led by Mrs. Beatrice Apeji came into the house, the session began in earnest.

The first question was how the subject of her age came about, knowing that when she was born, literacy wasn't as widespread as it is now. It was Peter that came in at this point, saying, "I knew it through one of my late aunties and the eldest man in Igarra today, the Oshemi Anayinmi of Igarra, Chief J. A. Sani (102). The immediate younger sister to Sani was of the same age with my mother. When that man's younger sister died, I asked and Sani told me then (about four years ago). At 95 years then, if the deceased was older than my mother at all, then my mother is between 98 and 99 years today."

It was now Grandma Mary's turn to tell us about her surviving age mates, and this she answered very clearly in the Igarra dialect, which was later interpreted to English Language. From observation, Mary has sharp grasp of any question, as she turns to look directly at who is asking her the question, promptly providing the answer. Her gaze is intense too. Of surviving age mates, she says, "It's only one that is alive today that I can remember; Mrs. Atosu."

Mary now takes charge, in an effort to say it as it is. She explains what she felt was necessary, and begin, "Four of my children are living now, while the more senior ones are late, the most senior of which would have been around 74 of age today, were she alive. These are my surviving children. I lost my husband in November 1980, and since then, the children have been my companion."

Mary, who combines being a housewife with native clothes weaving, recalls with fond memories her late husband, who was a farmer and traditional title holder. So also does she have good memory of her early days, including why she missed going to school.

According to her, "When I was of school age, my father, late Chief Amune Ofei, said he did not have money to send me to school, and above that, being his eldest daughter, I was the one who will give him water in the farm."

She continues, "In our days, we used to see Europeans come to Igarra, but I did not have any encounter with them. In our own time, whenever we saw the Europeans, we ran into the farm. Great politicians came to our area too - Awolowo and Zik came to Igarra to campaign, but as women, we were not privileged to come out. As a matter of fact, we used to run away for fear that it was tax-drive.

"And, don't forget that the tales of slavery, when Europeans came to trick our people with mirror, were not too distant then. I knew when they (white men) brought salt and distributed to members of the community. We would go in the morning to queue up for our share. That was in the 1940s."

Mary explains that she does not recall particularly sad moments, as family and friends make her happy, while other cherished memories also make her happy.

"There are friends and family members around; but when my husband died, I was not happy. When I married was a happy period for me and the times I gave birth to my children."

On the secret of long life, Mary says longevity runs in her family. The first child of her parents, she lost her immediate younger sister, Mrs. Abigail Dawodu, recently. The late sister was interned last week.

Beatrice (69) comes in at this point in support of her mother, chipping in some facts about her mother's culinary skills and things they observed about her.

She says, "Our mother eats well and is happy mostly, but she was pained the day her first daughter died, in 2000; and lately when she lost her younger sister, Abigail." At this point, Mary gets up to bring photographs showing her younger days, while Beatrice resumes the talk.

She says of her mother, "She is highly recognised for her age. For instance, there are ceremonies where, as the second oldest woman in Igarra, she is accorded some rights; and based on this, when events such as child dedication, house warming and even obituaries take place, they bring her special dues in recognition."

Mary, in her neatly done native Ankara blouse and wrapper apparel, comes in with her hands full of photographs, while one of her grandchildren holds on to her, as we all sit down to look through. Is she happy? It seems so, as Mary, surrounded by some of her loved ones, discusses every picture picked.

V. ABUBAKAR CASE STUDY: USING OFFSHORE COMPANIES

TO BRING SUSPECT FUNDS INTO THE UNITED STATES

Jennifer Douglas Abubakar, a U.S. citizen, is the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar, the

former Vice President of Nigeria and a former candidate for the Presidency of Nigeria. This case

history examines how, from 2000 to 2008, Ms. Douglas helped her husband bring over $40

million in suspect funds into the United States, including at least $1.7 million in bribe payments

from Siemens AG, a German corporation, and over $38 million from little known offshore

corporations, primarily LetsGo Ltd. Inc., Guernsey Trust Company Nigeria Ltd., and Sima

Holding Ltd.

Over half of the suspect funds, nearly $25 million, were wire transferred by the offshore

corporations into U.S. bank accounts opened by Ms. Douglas. For most of the time period

examined, the U.S. banks with those accounts were unaware of Ms. Douglas’ PEP status, and

allowed multiple large wire transfers into her accounts from the offshore corporations. As, over

time, each of the banks began to question the wire transfers into her accounts, Ms. Douglas

indicated that all of the funds came from her husband and professed little familiarity with the

offshore corporations actually sending her money.

Bank records indicate that Ms. Douglas used most of the funds placed into her accounts

to support a lavish lifestyle in the United States, paying credit card bills and household expenses

in the range of $10,000 to $90,000 per month, including substantial legal and accounting bills.

She also transferred funds to accounts she opened for the Gede Foundation, a nonprofit

corporation she established in 2002, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), a university

that Mr. Abubakar founded in 2003, and whose name reflects its association with American

University in the United States.

An additional $14 million of the suspect funds were wire transferred by two of the

offshore corporations, LetsGo and the Guernsey Trust Company, to American University to pay

for consulting fees related to AUN. American University officials told the Subcommittee that

they understood the funds came from Mr. Abubakar and never inquired why the wire transfers

were sent by unfamiliar offshore corporations. At least another $2.1 million was wire transferred

by the Guernsey Trust Corporation to accounts controlled by Edward Weidenfeld, a U.S. lawyer

who provided legal services to Ms. Douglas, Mr. Abubakar, and AUN. Mr. Weidenfeld

explained that the funds paid for the Abubakars’ legal expenses and an account set up for AUN,

and that he had assumed the funds came from Mr. Abubakar.

Over the years, questions have been raised about the source of Mr. Abubakar’s wealth.

He spent twenty years in the Nigerian Customs Service, and then worked in the private sector for

ten years, before serving as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. While Vice President,

Mr. Abubakar was the subject of corruption allegations relating to the Nigerian Petroleum

Technology Development Fund. In December 2008, the U.S. Securities and Exchange

Commission alleged in a formal complaint against Siemens AG, a German company, that,

among other actions, in 2001 and 2002, Siemens wire transferred $2.8 million in bribe payments..

to a U.S. bank account belonging to Ms. Douglas as part of a scheme to bribe Nigerian officials.

In response to this and other legal actions, Siemens admitted to engaging in widespread bribery the committee that he surmised the Gede Foundation account was closed due to its

association with Ms. Douglas.1172

Chevy Chase told the Subcommittee that it tendered its resignation from the JDA Family

Trust in January 2006, and intended to close the account soon after, but Mr. Weidenfeld had

informed Chevy Chase that he was having a difficult time finding a replacement trustee.1173

Mr. Weidenfeld told the Subcommittee that he contacted the following institutions which

declined to take the trust: PNC Bank, Ashbridge Investments, J.P. Morgan Private Bank,

Samson Capital in New York, Neville Rody and Shaw, and Papamarkou Asset Management in

New York City, before finding a company that would take the trust.1174 An internal Chevy Chase

email noted: “At least five foreign financial institutions with no presence in the United States

have refused to take this business.”1175 Chevy Chase told the Subcommittee: “Under principles

of trust law, Chevy Chase Trust had a duty to continue as the corporate trustee until a

replacement trustee was found or Jennifer Douglas Abubakar and Francis Iwenjiora exercised

their powers under the trust to remove Chevy Chase Trust.”1176

$500,000 Wire Transfer to Faibros Investments. More than a year and a half after

Chevy Chase tendered its resignation from the JDA Family Trust and while the search for a new

trustee continued, a JDA Family Trust request for a $500,000 wire transfer raised new concerns

at the bank. In September 2007, the JDA Family Trust requested a wire transfer of $500,000 to

Faibros Investments FZ-LLC in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates.1177 In a September 17,

2007 letter to Ms. Douglas’ legal counsel, the Chevy Chase Trust Company declined to complete

the wire transfer. The Trust Company wrote:

“[O]ur primary business is the investment management of individual’s wealth. We do have

trust powers and serve as a fiduciary primarily for our clients for whom we manage their

investments. In a few limited circumstances we serve as directed trustee where another

entity, well known to us, is the investment manager.”1178

Weidenfeld-01-0030

1173 9/5/08 letter from Chevy Chase’s legal counsel to the Subcommittee, PSI-Chevy_Chase-06-0001-07, at 05.

Mr. Weidenfeld’s legal counsel also told the Subcommittee: “With the Citibank account closing, a replacement

facility was urgently required. At approximately the same time, Chevy Chase Bank gave notice it would no longer

serve as trustee for the Jennifer Douglas Family Trust (‘the JDA trust’), and the money manager for the JDA trust

announced their intention to resign. The Abubakars requested that Mr. Weidenfeld find a new money manager, as

well as a new trustee to replace Chevy Chase.” 11/13/09 letter from Mr. Weidenfeld’s legal counsel, London &

Mead, to the Subcommittee, PSI-Abubakar_&_Weidenfeld-01-0023.

EX-MINISTER,OJO MADUEKE SON ALLEGELY BEATS LADY SILLY AT LAGOS HANGOUT

Days after Ufoma, a Nigerian model and actress raised public attention to what she called public assault by aides of Hon. Kuforiji, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly- the son of a former minister is already in the middle of a controversy also bothering on assault and injury...

Ugonna, son of Nigeria’s former minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Madueke is still in the books of men of the Bar Beach police station, Victoria Island. They want him to explain reasons behind his unpalatable actions last weekend.

The heavily built University of Maryland (USA) graduate was said to have brutalize a young lady at the opening of opening of Volar by Vutton in VI on Saturday 13 November 2010.

The misunderstanding between Ugonna and the said lady started when she tried entering the section of the club where He (Ugonna) and his friends were rollicking with expensive choice drinks and hot chics.

We gathered that the young man who is one of the biggest spenders in Lagos hangouts was ‘high in the spirit’ after taking a lot of drinks and spent amount close to a million Niara with his friends (Who are mostly silverspoon kids from the UK and USA)

Sources told us that it was a brutal experience for the lady over a small issue.

“If you see this dude. He is fat and stocky, using his power to cause bodily harm on a female. After failed attempts to rectify the problems with the club operators (because the guy was spending so much money all they could say was “sorry ma” and “can we offer you a drink”),disclosed our source

The young lady contacted the Lagos commissioner of police and three police vehicles full off officers came to the club. Ugonna was shouting obscene words and yelling ” bring the f..king DPO to me”..”Ill call my chief security officers”..and continued to rant “Do you know who I am”. After 15 minutes of him tussling with the about 10 officers he was whisked away by a friend then later came back to retrieve his vehicle.

The young lady suffered bruised chins(ankles) a swollen lip and bruised knee causing a limp. She had to later seek medical attention.

Whistle-blowing website Wikileaks says it has come under attack from a computer-hacking operation, ahead of a release of secret US documents.

"We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack," it said on its Twitter feed earlier.

It added that several newspapers will go ahead and publish the documents released to them by Wikileaks even if the site goes down.

The US state department has said the release will put many lives at risk.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has said the US authorities are afraid of being held to account.

Wikileaks has said the release of classified messages sent by US embassies will be bigger than past releases on Afghanistan and Iraq.

The newspapers set to publish details of the US embassy cables include Spain's El Pais, France's Le Monde, Germany's Speigel, the UK's Guardian and the New York Times.

The latest leak is expected to include documents covering US dealings and diplomats' confidential views of countries including Australia, Britain, Canada, Israel, Russia and Turkey.

"The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world," Mr Assange told reporters by video link on Sunday. ..

A journalist with Britain's Guardian newspaper said the files include an unflattering US assessment of UK PM David Cameron.

Simon Hoggart told the BBC: "There is going to be some embarrassment certainly for Gordon Brown but even more so for David Cameron who was not very highly regarded by the Obama administration or by the US ambassador here."

No-one has been charged with passing the diplomatic files to the website but suspicion has fallen on US Army private Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst arrested in Iraq in June and charged over an earlier leak of classified US documents to Mr Assange's organisation.

'Illegally obtained'

The US government has written to Mr Assange, urging him not release the documents.

The letter from the US state department's legal adviser Harold Koh said the release of classified state department documents was against US law and would put "countless" lives at risk.

Mr Assange is said to have asked which individuals would be put at risk by the leak and offered to negotiate over limited redactions.

In response, Mr Koh demanded that Wikileaks return official documents to the US government.

"We will not engage in a negotiation regarding the further release or dissemination of illegally obtained US government classified materials," he said in the letter.

Mr Koh's letter adds that the publication of the documents would endanger the lives of "countless" individuals - from journalists to human rights activists and bloggers - and put US military operations at risk.

Wikileaks earlier this week said that its next release of documents would be nearly seven times larger than the nearly 400,000 Pentagon documents relating to the Iraq war it published in October.

Wikileaks argues that the site's previous releases shed light on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They included allegations of torture by Iraqi forces and reports that suggested 15,000 additional civilian deaths in Iraq.

UK turns eyes on Soludo

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chukwuma Soludo, is under the radar of British crime investigators who want to understand his role in the N29 billion polymer banknote contract issued during his tenure...

Between 2006 and 2009, the Central Bank carried out currency reforms that saw the introduction of polymer bank notes to replace the paper notes of the country’s lower denominations. In late 2009, media reports alleged that top CBN officials had received bribes in order to grant an Australian company, Securency International Pty Ltd, the contract which saw the Australian company supplying Nigeria with at least 1.9 billion pieces of the polymer substrate.

The contract is now the subject of a multi-national investigation straddling Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the UK and Nigeria, from which about N3.5 billion was paid out in slush fund. Investigators believe that millions out of the amount were paid to top Nigerian politicians and bank officials.

Investigating the Scandal

International sources who spoke to NEXT in confidence, said that feelers from the on-going investigations by the British Serious Fraud Office (SFO) point to the fact that Mr. Soludo has become a subject of their investigations. NEXT had earlier reported that the former bank chief directed contract processes in the CBN as well as the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting PLC, of which the CBN has a 77% shareholding.

“SFO is investigating the Nigerian deal in the UK. Soludo may be tied to a lot of those Nigerian deals which explains why the SFO may be investigating him,” our source said.

The SFO’s spokesperson in an email exchange with NEXT however declined to confirm or refute the claims.

“Without wishing to be unhelpful, I am unable to provide any further details. The investigation is ongoing. For guidance; it is not SFO policy to confirm or deny the names of suspects in its investigations,” Katie Winstanley of the SFO said. Ms. Winstanley further said that the SFO has arrested at least five people so far in connection with the on-going investigation.

A source within the EFCC, who asked not to be named, however confirmed that the SFO had indeed contacted the Nigerian anti-graft agency in relation to the investigations involving Mr. Soludo.

“There may be something like that. I know that there has been intelligence exchange between the EFCC and the SFO concerning this matter. It is an on-going investigation which was not initiated by the EFCC,” our source said.

In the months following the media reports, several anti-corruption agencies within and outside Nigeria have launched investigations into the scandal. In Nigeria, the initial enthusiasm showed by the Nigerian Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the National Assembly has since waned. None of the Nigerian investigations have yielded any results..

Efforts to get obtain reactions from the official spokesmen for the EFCC and the CBN were unfruitful.

Sharing the contract commissions

Documents obtained by NEXT show that Securency, whose parent company is the Reserve Bank of Australia, paid about $23 million dollars in suspect commissions to a company domiciled in a tax haven, Seychelles. The company, SPT Limited, further commissioned two other agents to secure the Nigerian contracts.

The Australian media, championed by The Age, is claiming that the agents chosen had close links with top government and CBN officials. One of the agents, Joseph Raad, who was appointed as a ‘confidential sub-agent’ by SPT LTD, is Iceland’s honorary Consul General to Nigeria. SPT, which stood to gain 12% of all contract deals secured from Nigeria, pledged to pay its agents between 4.5-5% of the contracts worth.

Today's Sermon

2 Corinthians 6:17
"Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord...”
God has always required His people to separate. He told Israel, “be ye holy, for I am Holy.”

God knows that we become like, whoever and whatever we spend the most time with. God wants us to be like Him, not like the world. In order for
that to happen, we must separate ourselves from the world.

Separation in the Scripture has two meanings:
1. separate from whatever is contrary to the mind of God
2. separate unto God Himself

We must separate ourselves from whatever is not like God. We must also
separate ourselves unto God. This means that we most make ourselves
only available to God. God uses people that have mad themselves
available to him.

It is impossible for God to fully bless and use believers who compromise with evil.
This doesn’t mean that we are not saved, but we will block the blessing and
move of God in our lives. Some believers live the entire lives and
never reach their full potential in God.

We must separate ourselves from evil desire, motive, and behavior.

We must also separate ourselves from false teachers :

We must not fellowship with those that pervert the Gospel of Christ, or use the gospel for their own benefit.

This separation is not to limit our contact with evil, but that we not conform to this evil.

Jesus said in John 17:15 “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the
world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”
Just as God has his Pastors Satan also has his .
On TV on the Radio everywhere .

God called us to be in the world, but not of it. We cannot avoid evil.
Evil is everywhere. But we must never compromise with this evil. We
must not
cannot agree with it, support it, or participate in it.
We must move from being workers of evil, to tools of righteousness.

There are rewards of separation
We rewarded when we separate ourselves from the world.
1. “... I will receive you.”
Ezekiel 20:41
“I will accept you with your sweet savor, when I bring you out from the
peoples, and gather you out of the countries in which ye have been
scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the nations.”
When God receives or accepts us,
He opens the door for us to have fellowship with Him.
We graduate from being just a praise to now becoming a
worshiper
Praise becomes worship, when there is a change in the lifestyle of the
believer.

2. The second reward is fruitful ministry.
2 Timothy 2:21
“If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument
for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do
any good work. “
If we want the ministry to grow, we must let it go.
Here Paul was talking about “youthful lust.”
Youthful lust are things that immature people seek after. It is a reckless,
does not consider consequences. Whatever feels good, do it.

2 Corinthians 7: 1
“Having, therefore, these promises”
(God will accept us, He will be our father, He will use us)
“let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit”

There are things that we do, or get involved in that contaminate our flesh and spirit.

What we do, does not only affect our flesh, but it affect our spirit.

What is done in the flesh, effects the spirit, and what is done in the sprit effects the flesh.

To your Tents O Isreal for as for me and my house We will serve the Lord !

Happy Sunday .
