The Federal Government yesterday approved a whopping $3.5 billion equivalent of N525 billion for the construction of a new 700 KV SuperGrid aimed at shoring up power generation capacity to 7000 mega watts by April 2011.

The approval which was endorsed by President Goodluck Jonathan, after a meeting with the Presidential Action Committe on Power (PACP), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja is completed in four years.

Ima Niboro, special adviser on media and publicity said in a statement that “$3.5 billion power project is expected to fulfill Nigeria’s need to transmit increasing amounts of power across vast distances which the existing 330/132KV grid cannot meet”...

Niboro stated that “in granting approval for the SuperGrid President Jonathan directed that it should be funded as a federal asset with additional financing from private investors and international finance and development agencies”.

“The SuperGrid which will run along the same route as the existing 330/132KV grid will also address Nigeria’s future energy challenges including transition to more sustainable energy sources, reduction of power loss per transmitted megawatt and improving power voltage profiles across the country,” he stated further.

The presidential spokesman said “the huge advantage of the 700 KV supergrid over the existing 330/132 KV grid is that it will significantly reduce the huge amount of power currently lost in transmission”.

He said that “without the supergrid, the quantum of power lost in transmission will continue to increase as more power progressively becomes available for evacuation from new and rehabilitated generating stations. Periodic systemic failures will also become more frequent”.

Niboro said “Nigeria’s available generation capacity will rise to 6939 MW by April next year and 14019 MW by December 2013.In another development, President Jonathan will on Thursday, August 26, 2010 present a new roadmap for the reformation of Nigeria’s power sector to the country’s private sector”.

He said President Jonathan will on Thursday, August 26, 2010 present a new roadmap for the reformation of Nigeria’s power sector to the country’s private sector

According to him “President Jonathan will seize the opportunity of the event in Lagos to acquaint members of the private sector with fresh investment opportunities inherent in the power sector reform programme and invite greater private sector support for the programme”.

Enugu herbalist takes 48th wife

An Enugu based herbalist and self-styled King Solomon of Africa, Dr OnuUwa Simon Odo, made history recently when he performed the traditional wedding rites to a 24-year-old girl to bring the total of his wives to 48.
The 64-year-old herbalist, who married his first wife at the age of 15 , by the recent marriage, now ranks among the world’s most polygamous men.

OnuUwa wedded Ndidi, a secondary school leaver at a flamboyant traditional marriage ceremony unprecedented in the annals of Ajii, a hinterland community in the Igbo Eze North Local Government Area, Enugu State.
The herbalist who said he specialized in healing the sick, especially those whose ailment had defied orthodox therapy; preparation of good luck and success charms, claimed to have received his power from Eze-Nwayi at an early age.

Although he told Daily Sun that his latest wife, Ndidi would be his last, a family source said it is doubtful if he could resist the urge to marry more wives, insisting that “he will marry again.”
OnuUwa, who said he was a baptized and confirmed Catholic, as well as a Mass server, denied any involvement in ritual sacrifices or shedding of human blood..
“I will go to heaven because I am a good man,” he boasted, adding that if he were bad, the gods would have punished him through his children or wives, pointing out that he has never recorded death of a child or wife.

It is just very wonderful how peaceful the family is, given its large population. Explaining the secrete behind the unprecedented harmony in his family, he attributed it to the strict adherence of members of his household to the written rules guiding his family, which he calls the “four commandments” that forbids them to steal, be jealous, fight or kill.

There is no barren woman in his household, but he refused to disclose the number of children he has.
“How can I tell you the number of children I have. You don’t count children, because they are gifts from God. Before you leave, one of my wives may give birth, would you not call me a liar?” the herbalist queried jokingly.
“My ambition to establish a village with my family has been realized. We are now more than a village,” he told Daily Sun. Hear him:

I once served mass
I started my herbal business in 1962 when I was 15 years. I was attending the Catholic Church. I was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church and I even served the mass. Because I was poisoned by my enemies I had to leave. I was born in 1947, the year locusts appeared in the sky.
My kind of herbal practice
Since I started the herbal practice in1962, I have been kind to my patients and I used my gift to help very many persons. If you give me $100 million to kill a human being, I will not take, I no dey “share” blood. I am a man and I cannot “share” blood because, God created the people.

I want to emulate King Solomon
No, it is not 47 wives, but 48. Yes, I married a very young secondary school leaver and did the traditional marriage recently. Her name is Ndidi and I love her too much I decided to marry the 48th wife because, it is what I desire to do. To marry many wives is ordained by God. For me, I want to marry like King Solomon in the Bible. God is helping me. I am healthy. I have the money and can marry as many wives as I like, since I am sexually active. Even in the next 30 years, I will still be sexually active. I am a herbalist and I know the power of plants and roots in our body.

Ndidi will be my last wife
Ndidi will be the last woman I will marry. I will not marry anybody again. I don’t want to marry any more. I am okay. I am getting older even though I am healthy; I am okay with 48 wives. I will not marry again; I don’t want to reach 50 wives. You want me to marry two more to make it 50, no!

How many wives have you, yourself?
The number of my children
They are plenty; I don’t know how many they are. You don’t count children, they are gifts from God. I don’t count them. It’s abomination to do so. What I know is that some of my wives have 10 children, some five, some four, some two. We have not recorded any death here either of a wife or child. The last wife is yet to get her own children. One of my daughters is a councilor, serving for the fourth tenure. My first son Emeka has married and he has six children and his first daughter is already married. I have 35 grand children. Many of my daughters are married. One of my wives just came back from the North where she went to see her daughter who gave birth recently. Some of my children are in the universities.
The work I do
The work I do is not by inheritance. It is a special gift from Eze Nwayi. She can choose anybody from the family irrespective of age. It is my destiny; nobody can learn it unless you are chosen because it is very, very hard.

When I will die
Yes I know, and it is God who will say it. When he says, I will know. How can you ask me that question? Do you want me to challenge God? No, I will not.
Me being a politician

I am the father of all the political parties, PDP is my own; PRP is my own; NCNC is my own, all of the parties are my own. Anyone of the politicians who want to contest, if he comes to me, I help the person. I like politics; I love it so much because it is the easiest way to make money in Nigeria today. I did not go to school otherwise I would have become a politician.

Yes, I helped many of them to become governors and commissioners, but I will not tell you their names. Why do you want to know their names? They come from Hausa, Igbo, Igala, Yoruba and other parts of Nigeria. Some are now in the National Assembly; when, you help them and they go up, they will not remember you again. They are wicked.

Achieving my dream of having a village as family
Yes, it has been achieved, God has made it possible, if you come to my house now, you can get more than 300 people, are they not up to a village?
My best wife
Thank you very much. My lovely wife and the one I love most is Ndidi, the last one. I love her most because she is yet to get her own children. When she gets issue up to two or four I will begin to love all of them equally.

Any Will?
I will not share my property now. I made no Will. If I do it now it will bring misunderstanding. God gave me obedient and good wives. Nobody is envious of her neighbour. Even if I die today, they know how to share my property peacefully because they know I am not a wicked man, I am not a bad person; God will never give me or my children power to do bad things. I am sure of that one.

Feeding my wives and children
Some of my sons have money. They are rich. My first son has his own house and is married with six children. The senior rich children are catering for their families. I only see to the upkeep of the junior ones. None of my children is useless. All of them are very responsible. That is why I have no problem.

My strength sexually at 64 and with 48 wives
Yes, I am strong 24 hours. Even in the next 30 years, I am on; in the next 30 good years I have the strength to meet my wives. Do you know the reason? I have no envy in me. I have no time to fight with anyone or struggle for something. Money is not my problem. I have never made case with anybody. I live a peaceful life. All these things make me to grow younger. I am always happy in my compound. Everybody knows what to do and what is forbidden. So, there is no quarrelling or scolding. My wives are happy. If there is no peace in my house it can weaken me both physically and spiritually. I feed very well. If a wife who should feed me for the day fails, another one will take over.

Any regrets in life?
Nothing whatsoever; absolutely nothing. I say nothing at all. I am fulfilled. God is so kind to me. I thank my God for everything. I don’t habour any ill feelings. Even all my wives know this. I don’t tolerate nonsense. If any of my wives misbehaves, I sack her . But thank God none of them has given cause for me to act in that way.
I married all my wives in the traditionally

I did not marry any of my wives in the Christian tradition. I married all of them in the pagan way. True, I was a Catholic and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church and was a Mass server. I had to leave the church when I was poisoned by my enemy.

Advice to my children
I don’t want any of them to tell lies, I don’t want any of them to steal, I don’t want any of them to be jealous, I don’t want any of them to kill or do any evil. I told my children that any of them that disobeys the advice, I will disown him.

Ndidi: why I married my husband
My wedding the herbalist is the best thing that has happened to me in life. I am grateful to God for doing me the favour. He is my choice, nobody or circumstance forced me. I love him because he has a good reputation in our area and beyond. I relate well with other wives. As human beings, if we have any misunderstanding, we settle it immediately before our husband finds out because if he finds out, we will be in trouble.

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) - A U.S. military tribunal on Wednesday sentenced Osama bin Laden's former cook to 14 years in prison, but he is expected to serve far less under a plea deal that remains secret.

The defendant, Sudanese captive Ibrahim al Qosi, pleaded guilty last month in the war crimes court at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base to charges of conspiring with al Qaeda and providing material support for terrorism.

Qosi, a 50-year-old with a white beard, has been held at Guantanamo for more than eight years.

Military officials said it could be several months before his full plea agreement is made public. But the al-Arabiya television network based in Dubai quoted unidentified sources as saying it caps his sentence at two years.

Qosi acknowledged that he knew al Qaeda was a terrorist group when he ran one of the kitchens in bin Laden's Star of Jihad compound in Afghanistan.

Qosi, who met bin Laden in Sudan and travelled with him to Afghanistan, also admitted helping the al Qaeda leader escape U.S. forces in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan.

He said he had no involvement in or prior knowledge of terrorist attacks.

Qosi was the first Guantanamo captive convicted under the administration of President Barack Obama, whose efforts to shut down the detention camp have been blocked by Congress.

His sentencing hit a snag because, according to the judge, the U.S. military ignored orders to develop a plan specifying how prisoners would serve their sentences after conviction in the Guantanamo tribunals.

COMMUNAL CONFINEMENT
Qosi wanted to avoid serving his in solitary confinement. His plea deal required the convening authority overseeing the trial to recommend that Qosi serve his time in Camp Four, where detainees live communally under fewer restrictions than in the other camps.

But military rules forbid housing convicted criminals with other detainees.

The judge, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Nancy Paul, said an assistant defence secretary ordered two years ago that the Army and the military's Southern Command, which oversees the Guantanamo base, develop a detailed plan for housing prisoners after their conviction.

"This has not been done," the judge said tersely.

She said the absence of any written policy or plan was "especially troubling" because another trial was under way for a young Canadian captive and could produce another conviction.

She ruled that Qosi's plea agreement was still valid because it only called for a recommendation that he be housed in the communal camp, and did not guarantee he would be.

The judge directed that Qosi remain in Camp Four for 60 days while the military works out where he would serve the rest of his sentence.

Qosi is the fourth captive convicted in the tribunals created to try non-U.S. terrorism suspects after the al Qaeda attacks of September 11, 2001. Two served short sentences and were sent home to Australia and Yemen.

The only other convict remaining at Guantanamo is Ali Hamza al Bahlul, a Yemeni who was an al Qaeda videographer. He is serving a life sentence for conspiring with al Qaeda and providing material support for terrorism.

"He is separated from the general population," said a Guantanamo spokesman, Navy Commander Brad Fagan. He declined to elaborate except to say, "He's by himself."

Once Qosi returns to Sudan, he will enter a program that is run by the Sudanese intelligence service and is designed to rehabilitate those with radical views, defence lawyers said. Nine other Sudanese captives have gone through the program upon repatriation from Guantanamo, they said.

After completing the program, Qosi will then return to live with his family but will be monitored to ensure he has no contact with radicals, they said.

Where can you reunite with high school buddies, cousins and former
coworkers at once? Facebook, of course. This virtual world provides fellowship, socializing, job networking, and can just help keep pals in touch. But,

just like high school has snobs, Facebook has snobs among the crowd too. Here are a few signs of a Facebook snob.

Facebook Snob Characteristic #1: Ignores friend requests from people they know or are related to.

This doesn't apply to ignoring the friend request of a psycho ex-boyfriend or someone you've never met. But, if you ignore the friend request of your great-aunt, friend at church or someone else you really know, you might be considered a Facebook snob. It really depends on the circumstances. If someone you know hasn't done something to harm you, and you just don't want to connect with them, you might be the qualifications of a Facebook snob.

Facebook Snob Characteristic #2: Accepts a friend request, then acts like they never existed.

Whenever I get a new friend request, I always try to make some effort to reconnect with the person. It could be as simple as commenting on their recent Facebook status, or "liking" their kids photos. Or, it could be a private message asking how they are doing. But, I would never accept a friend request and then never, ever comment on a Facebook status or picture.

It also definitely meets the qualifications of a Facebook snob if someone sends you a private message and you completely ignore the message altogether. ..

Facebook Snob Characteristic #3:Invites other Facebook friends to events, but ignores mutual, real-life friends.

If you're going to host a party, it's understandable if you can't invite everyone. However, it's best not to do it through Facebook. It's simply rude to let everyone else that you've invited some people to your party, but don't want other people to attend. Everyone else might be able to see about the event, read comments on their walls, etc. Try to be courtesy and invite people the old-fashioned way.

Would you "hide" someone in real life? Hiding friends might be considered a little snobby. It really depends on the circumstances. Read "Is it Rude to Hide Someone on Facebook? for more insight on this

issue. It's understandable to hide people to you don't really know well, or at all, but if you're hiding your brother, that might mean you are a Facebook snob.

Facebook Snob Characteristic #4

Ignoring people who make comments about your posts but You never make comments about their posts .In real Life this is like someone commenting on you and you refusing to respond even though it is not a negative statement.

Facebook Snob Characteristic No 5 Requesting a friend and then After they ACCEPT You totally ignore or EVEN Block Them ! Now this is more or less The one we did in High School ! this tops the bunch ! you rub the snobbery in ! ##

Now do you think you Are you a Facebook SnUb ???

Thousands of online banking customers have accounts emptied by 'most dangerous trojan virus ever created'

* Trojan is still at large and may strike again, experts warn
* Bank affected has still not been named

Cyber criminals have raided the accounts of thousands of British internet bank customers in one of the most sophisticated attacks of its kind.

The fraudsters used a malicious computer programme that hides on home computers to steal confidential passwords and account details from at least 3,000 people..

The internet security experts M86, who uncovered the scam, estimate that at least £675,000 has been illegally transferred from the UK in the last month - and that the attacks are still continuing.

Out of action: The new trojan virus can empty bank accounts without their owners knowing about the theft

Out of action: The new trojan virus can empty bank accounts without their owners knowing about the theft as it showsthem fake statements

All the victims were customers with the same unnamed online bank, the company said.

Last night online banking customers were urged to make sure their anti-virus software was up to date - and to check for any missing sumsfrom their accounts.

The attack has been traced to a 'control and command' centre in Eastern Europe. However, the nationality of the cybercriminals isunknown.

TROJAN PROTECTION TIPS

  • Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date.
  • Keep firewalls set to the highest level.
  • Never open an e-mail attachment from someone you don't know.
  • Never double-click on an e-mail attachment that ends in .exe. It is an'executable' file and can do what it likes in your system.
  • If you think your machine has already been infected, contact your bankimmediately. If the bank thinks you are a genuine victim of fraud itwill reimburse you.

The attacks were carried out when hundreds of thousands of home computers were infected with a type of harmful computer code called aTrojan.

Trojans hide in websites, emails or downloads. Once installed on a computer they can record every type of the keyboard, steal confidentialinformation or even open up a PC's security so that it can becontrolled remotely from another country.

The latest attack involved a Trojan called Zeus v3 which hides inside adverts on legitimate websites.

Once installed on a home computer, the programme waits until the user visits their online bank and then secretly records their accountdetails and passwords - using the information to transfer between £1,000and £5,000 to other bank accounts.

The attacks began on July 5 and are still progressing, according to Ed Rowley, product manager at M86.

'In the vast majority of cases, if people had kept their computer's operating systems and software such as Internet Explorer up to date theywould not have been attacked,' he said.

'More often than not Trojans exploit known vulnerabilities that can be simply patched and fixed by downloading updates.'

McAfee, the security software maker, said production of software code known as malware, which can harm computers and steal user passwords, reached a new high in the first six months of 2010.

It said total malware production continued to soar and 10 million new pieces of malicious code were catalogued.

It also warned users of Apple's Mac computers, considered relatively safe from virus attacks, that they may also be subjected to malwareattacks in the future.

'For a variety of reasons, malware has rarely been a problem for Mac users. But those days might end soon,' a spokesman said.

THE RISING THREAT OF TROJAN ATTACKS

Attacks by ‘Trojan viruses’ are on the rise in Britain.

Although up-to-date anti-virus software should prevent an attack, experts say analarming number of people leave their computers vulnerable tocybertheft.

Trojans are malicious programmes that hide inside apparently harmless computer files.

They can lurk on websites, online adverts or hitch a lift in emails.

The Zeus v3 Trojan involved in the latest attacks hides in adverts that appear on legitimate websites.

Each time someone clicks on the advert, the code is downloaded to their home computer where it lies dormant.

The code only becomes active when the computer connects to a bank websitewhen it starts to record account details, passwords and otherconfidential information.

It checks to see if the account holds enough cash and then transfers up to£5,000 to a ‘mule’ account - a legitimate bank account held by a realcustomer.

Owners of these mule accounts operate on the edge of the law and agree totransfer sums they receive to someone else, after taking a cut.

By the time the police have investigated a Trojan attack, the recipient of the money has usually vanished without trace.

Security experts say it is relatively easy to protect against Trojan attacks byinstalling anti-virus software and keeping it up to date.

Computer owners should also make sure they have downloaded any updates of theiroperating software - usually Windows - and other programmes such asInternet Explorer, Firefox and Adobe.

People should also be alert to junk emails that pretend to be from banks, theInland Revenue or online shops like Amazon and Ebay.

The emails invite the unwary to click on a link to a webpage containing a Trojan.

'Our latest threat report depicts that malware has been on a steady incline in the first half of 2010,' Mike Gallagher, chief technologyofficer of Global Threat Intelligence for McAfee, said in the reportthat was obtained by Reuters.

The internet security company has passed on details of the attacks to the UK Police Central E-Crime Unit in London.

Britain's high street banks declined to comment on the attacks, but urged customers to protect themselves from virus attacks.

A spokesman for HSBC said: 'There are millions of viruses and other malicious software.

'We urge people to take basic measure to protect themselves from virus attacks.

'Any customer who is a victim of fraud will be reimbursed by HSBC.'

Last year £59.7 million was stolen in online banking fraud, while another £440 million was lost to credit card fraud.

A Financial Fraud Action UK spokeswoman said: ‘The idea that criminals are targeting people by using malicious software or Trojans isnothing new.

‘Bank systems are hard to attack so they’re having to go through the easier link in the chain, which is the customers.

‘They’re hoping customers aren’t taking security precautions. We’ve been seeing this for the last few years and we’re constantly urgingpeople to protect their computers to try to mitigate the risk ofbecoming a victim.”

Online banking customers can take measures to protect themselves by keeping their anti-virus software up to date and keeping their firewallsset to the highest level, she added.

Victims of online banking fraud usually get their money back.

Earlier this month, an internet security company Trusteer, warned that 100,000 British computers were infected with an earlier version ofZeus.

Three people died instantly, and thirteen others sustained injuries from a road crash that took place at Car Wash, Oworosoki Expressway exit of the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday morning.

The accident involved a truck belonging to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and two commercial vehicles popularly known as ‘Danfo' and ‘Molue.' According to eyewitnesses, the Molue (a fabricated 44-seater bus) lost control and ran into a moving Danfo bus. The Danfo Bus (15 seater bus) subsequently swerved into the LAWMA truck which was about to exit the express way.

"A LAWMA truck wanted to make a U-turn to collect dustbin under the bridge. He did not check his mirror well and as it was making the U-turn, a Molue bus don hit a bus wey dey come. That is how the bus run into the truck," said Tunde Ibrahim, a recharge card seller who witnessed the incident while coming to work at 9am yesterday.

The result of the collusion completely wrecked the Danfo bus and resulted in the instantaneous death of two passengers, while a LAWMA staff died while receiving first aid treatment. Most of the injured, who were coming from Lagos Island where they went to buy goods, were evacuated to St Daniel's Hospital, located about 100m away from the scene of the accident. A few were taken to Gbagada General Hospital. Adewale Ogunkoya, the Administrator of St Daniel's, confirmed that thirteen injured persons were brought into the hospital..

The state of the injured

"Yes we had them brought in about two and half hours ago," he said. "We were able to admit 8 out of the 13 but the remaining 5 were in very critical condition. They had fractures, some were bleeding from the nose and mouth, while others could not regain consciousness. We had to just administer first-aid to and transfer them to the Gbagada General Hospital with the help of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). All 8 have been stabilized. They are presently coming out of shock and most of them are now conscious."

"The victims sustained fractures on the leg and lacerations on the body and the head, but the hospital was able to stabilize the four men and women, supply them with drip and stitch the areas where they were badly cut. We felt bad, the moment we heard about it, and we alerted the whole hospital staff to get ready for the emergency because the patients may be brought because it happened very close to us, so we were ready. Some could not talk because they were in a state of shock He added the patients where attended to immediately without billing," he added.

A mother of one of the victims, Iyabo Animashaun, expressed gratitude to God for sparing the life of her daughter. "I just want to thank God that she did not have more than a gash on her head," she said. "It may look nasty but at least she is alive. The doctors just want her here for some time to make sure everything is okay before she is discharged."

At the Gbagada General Hospital, the situation of the victims who were referred there could not be ascertained as the hospital's administrative officers refused to left NEXT see some of the injured passengers. One of the administrative officers, who requested anonymity, confirmed that some accident victims were brought in but could not comment on their condition as he was not involved in their treatment. "Even if they are here, how do you expect us to know how they are doing? Are we their doctors?"

Happily injured

Florence Shotola, a 48-year-old trader who was in the Danfo bus, said she was coming from Adeniyi Adele in Lagos Island, and was on her way to Mile 12. "I have four children, I am very happy I did not die. I am better now thank God for the doctor," she said. Senate approves N87.7B for INEC

The Senate has approved a supplementary budget of N87.7 billion for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Lawmakers said this will aid the commission in organising a credible election in 2011.

The budget approved for the commission is however N2 billion less than what it requested.

The leadership of the commission had asked for N89.59 billion for the conduct of the election which is five months away. However, following a meeting with the commission's team and the House of Representatives and Senate, the parties agreed to cut down the request.

Ayogu Eze, the Senate spokesman, said, "At the end of our meetings, we looked at the budget thoroughly and saw that there were areas in which we needed to give attention like transportation and logistics. We moved money around and put money in crucial areas and made a saving of N2 billion," he said.

Mr Jega had explained that among other things that were previously left out, the commission needed a van for each of the 120, 000 registration points across the nation.

In his submission to the National Assembly, President Goodluck Jonathan had noted that, "the additional funds is to cover the cost of procuring electronic equipment and other ancillary expenses related to ... a fresh voter registration exercise as well as the procurement of additional ballot boxes." He added that, "we propose to fund this request by raising federal government bonds."

Reservations

The approval did not come without misgivings however as senators questioned the credibility of some allocations proposed in the budget. The budget has an allocation of N54.9 billion for ICT-voter registration system and solution, N4 billion for vehicles, and a separate N5.4 billion for the review of the voter register.

There is also an allocation of N10.8 billion for operations - personnel cost requirements and cost for registration of voters nationwide, and N222 million for hotel accommodation for political appointees which are believed to be the state INEC commissioners.

"We have expressed our reservations. In spite of the reservations, we don't want to give INEC or anybody an excuse for not conducting a credible election next year," the Senate President, David Mark said. "We have gone the extra mile to do this so that INEC can deliver credible election in 2011 that will meet international standards."

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, in his remarks, advised that the commission apply the funds in a way that will benefit the Nigerian economy and generate employment, saying they should consider patronising indigenous companies for some of the material they might need for the elections.

The approved budget has been harmonised by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which is expected to reconvene today and pass the budget too. After both arms of the National Assembly have passed the budget, it will be handed over to the president to sign into law. The electoral commission, which has now become an independent institution, can then draw the funds directly from the federation account.

Mr Ekweremadu's appeal to the commission to patronize indigenous companies may not be feasible, as Mr Jega had, at a briefing with senior journalists, ruled out this option, saying based on the shortness of time between the registration of voters and the actual elections in January, the commission cannot afford any delay or disappointment. He said his predecessor, Maurice Iwu, was disappointed at the last minute by local contractors and that the commission had lost a lot of time and could not afford such now..

The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) Nuhu Ribadu yesterday told Nigerian youth to “stop complaining and start taking action” if Nigeria is to progress. Mr Ribadu, who was the guest speaker at the inauguration of the new executives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, advised the youth to emulate the actions of leaders such Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, Obafemi Awolowo and Aminu Kano. “At the time these great names were taking on the major battles of their life and of their nations, they were in their 20s, or at most in their 30s. They were young men,” Mr Ribadu said. The former anti-corruption chief cited other examples of Mahatma Ghandi, Anthony Enahoro and Wole Soyinka as men who, right from their youth, had taken on major struggles for the liberation of their people. While condemning the various vices that the Nigerian youth are involved in, Mr Ribadu blamed bad governance as the bane of the problem bedevilling the Nigerian youth. “All over our country today, the most significant thing about our youth is the dramatic sense of shameless betrayal with which this nation has treated those it hopes will extend its future and its civilization,” he said. Mobilize the youth He challenged the members of the NYCN to mobilize Nigerian youth and ensure that at least 10 million Nigerian youth register and vote in the forthcoming election. The NYCN is an umbrella of over 40 youth organisations within the country. New executives of the group are inaugurated every four years. The new executives, which include Ajani James, the President and Esse Umoh, the deputy president were sworn in by a permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development, C. Eneh..

"Man Sleeps With 6-Year Old"

A trader, Ifeanyi Chukwuka, 29, has been charged with rape at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, Nigeria.

He was alleged to have taken a six-year old girl into his apartment at 21, Alfa Egan Street, off Isuti Road, Egan, a suburb of Lagos and had carnal knowledge of her.

He was unlucky as the mother of the victim saw her little girl going into his house and crying when she came out.

A close observation of the girl by the mother revealed that some fluid suspected to be sperm was coming out of her private part. She confronted the accused with her findings and reported the incident to policemen at the Igando police station.

The accused was arrested and charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court with rape. An offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge but the prosecutor told the court that the complainant, the mother of the victim, was no longer interested in the matter and had tendered a letter to withdraw the matter from court.

The magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Folami, struck out the case citing the withdrawal letter by the complainant.

A signal that the 2011 general elections could be deadly emerged last weekend, as a House of Representatives aspirant on the platform of the Action Congress (AC) was killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

Oghogho Omoregbe, who wanted to contest the Oriomhwon/Uhunwonde Federal Constituency in Edo State, was killed shortly after he declared his intention to contest in next year's general elections.

The 36 year old civil engineer and farmer was allegedly trailed to his rented apartment at Aitoe Idubor Avenue, off 2nd Ugbor Road, in Benin, at about 10pm. He was pursued to the back of the house where he was shot in the presence of his mother-in-law, by the gunmen who were said to have fled the place immediately.

Recounting her ordeal to journalists at the late Mr Omoregbe's wife's family house, at No 60, Awo Street, Stella Amadasun, the mother-in-law, said the late Oghogho, who just married his wife, Osato, last November, was still alive until they got to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was rushed to after they could not receive medical attention at the Central Hospital owing to the one-month-old strike of health workers in the state.

"He just came back from the campaign on Saturday; he came home for the first time and then left again, instructing his wife to prepare food for him," said Mrs Amadasun..

"He came with a boy and then they prayed together before he left again and told his wife that he would be back. This was around 9pm. Later that night, we heard the sound of a car and my daughter told me that it was her husband.

"Shortly after he opened the gate and was going back into his car to drive inside the compound, we heard him shout, Jesus, thief, then he ran into the other corner of the compound but he fell down when there was no escape route, then I ran to them and was begging that they should spare him, at least because of their one-month-old first child. Then I heard gunshots and they ran through the other side.

"I quickly ran to him and started shouting for help. He called for his parents before he passed out, then police was called. They were about five of them but we did not see their faces because it was dark."

Peter Ogboi, the state police spokesperson, said the state commissioner of police, Kachi Udeoji, has ordered that the homicide section of the police take over the case from Ugbor Police Station where the case was reported.

"As I talk to you, the commissioner of police has already directed that the case be taken over by the headquarters and the homicide department is already working and very soon, we will unravel the culprits. What we have done so far is to confirm the death."

On whether the killing was politically motivated, Ogboi said, "We cannot say that yet until the special session by the commissioner gives its report."

The late Oghogho Omorogbe, in a chat with journalists last Wednesday where he declared his intention to contest, attributed the rising rate of crime, including armed robbery and kidnapping, to the inability of elected political office holders to give right leadership to the people, accusing them of living in affluence amidst poverty.

What's Facebook really worth?

What's Facebook really worth? well we know its founder Mark Zuckerberg is worth enough ! (about 4billion dollars)
If the social-media site goes public, it will have to be as forthcoming as many of its users. The prospect of an IPO has investors salivating, but would buying be a good idea?

Is Facebook finally ready to "friend" the stock market?
Speculation about the vast social-networking website going public is nothing new, and, officially, Facebook doesn't have any plans for an IPO. "But Google said the same thing a month before they filed," says Paul Bard, an analyst with Renaissance Capital, which specializes in IPOs.The market for initial public offerings has been heating up, though, and experts say they wouldn't be surprised to see an IPO filing by the world's biggest online clubhouse as soon as September or October. That would put the timing of one of the most anticipated IPOs since the dot-com boom around the end of this year. The temptation: Facebook could raise money to fund expansion while employees and early investors realized their riches by unloading shares. The downside: Facebook would have to reveal juicy details about how much money it makes and how it plans to make more. For as often as Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg preaches publicly about how greater openness makes us better people, his company is notoriously secretive. Facebook rarely shares information such as revenue and profit margins.
The big question: How much is Facebook really worth, anyway?
Valuing the world's biggest social network
The anticipation is understandable. This is a website where hundreds of millions of people go daily to trade photos, catch up with friends and family, and share the trivia of their daily lives. (The details get too trivial for some, but hey, no one makes anyone look.) How can it not make money?
Recent leaks published by Reuters put Facebook's 2009 revenue at $800 million. A shop called Next Up Research believes Facebook brings in about $100 million a month. Based on those numbers and projected rapid growth, Next Up estimates the company is worth $11 billion to $12.5 billion. That's around the same estimate you get if you extrapolate from the value of a stake purchased by Digital Sky Technologies in 2009.
But I think those estimates are way off. Facebook is actually worth at least $30 billion. That's a little bigger than eBay (EBAY, news, msgs) and 50% bigger than Yahoo (YHOO, news, msgs), but just a fifth the size of its closest U.S. competitor, Google (GOOG, news, msgs). Here's my reasoning:
The company most like Facebook is a social-networking site called Tencent, listed on the Hong Kong exchange and based in China (where Facebook is banned). "Tencent is the Facebook of China," says portfolio manager Dennis Wassung of Cabot Money Management, which owns Tencent shares.
That's not the only parallel. Tencent has 428 million users, very roughly the same number as Facebook. (Facebook is expected to announce shortly it has topped 500 million users.)
Tencent has a market cap of $32 billion, and that's about what Facebook should be worth.
True, there are big differences between the two companies. Tencent made most of its $1.8 billion in sales last year from subscription fees and gaming, whereas Facebook earns money primarily from advertising. But my reasoning is that however you extract money using the loyalty of a social-networking site's user base as leverage, the amount of money you can extract -- and how fast that will grow -- should be about the same, because the level of loyalty is the same.
Other valuation methods suggest a similar or higher number:
First, consider the value of private shares of Facebook based on transactions carried out by independent brokers and at SharesPost.com, a platform that connects buyers and sellers in the shares of private companies.

According to Larry Albukerk, who brokers Facebook shares, substantial volume has changed hands recently in the $50-to-$60 range. SharesPost.com has displayed lots of trades in the same range and even above $70, but it's probably better to exclude those trades as outliers, Albukerk says. Because Facebook has about 480 million shares in the private market, he estimates, its value stands around $30 billion.

"There are very large, sophisticated institutional investors who are buying at a $30 billion valuation," Albukerk says. (By the way, if you want to buy Facebook stock in the private market, you're out of luck unless you are an accredited investor. This means you have to have at least $1 million in net worth or income of $200,000 to $300,000, depending on whether you are single or married.)
Analysts at Gordon Brothers Asset Advisors, which specializes in putting values on brands, think Facebook could be worth $40 billion to $60 billion. They get to that estimate by averaging the revenue, profit and enterprise value (market cap minus debt) per user at similar online companies such as Google, Yahoo, AOL (AOL, news, msgs) and eBay, and applying the same multiples to the number of Facebook users.Should you chase the IPO?
Whatever you think Facebook is worth, the fact that estimates of its value are rising sharply confirms that there's a huge appetite for a Facebook IPO. "Over the past several months, the price has been shooting up and up," Albukerk says. "It is a very robust secondary market, more so than any other company in the history of private companies."
This suggests you'll have to be careful about buying Facebook in the open market if it does finally have an IPO -- at a price that wouldn't be set for months. I'm assuming you don't have an account and connections with one of the big Wall Street banks that would help it go public -- the only way you'd get a swing at shares at the IPO price before they traded openly. Baidu (BIDU, news, msgs), known as the Chinese Google, soared "ridiculously high" on its first day of trading, and it took more than 18 months to get back above that initial high, points out Bard, of Renaissance Capital. He expects the same for Facebook.

"This is a stock that major institutions are going to want to own," he says. "The IPO price will be the floor for where it trades. The question is how much does it go up initially."
To avoid getting caught up in the hoopla and paying too much, Bard suggests avoiding Facebook stock if it trades for more than 12 times projected sales for the following 12 months. That, in fact, sounds pretty rich, given that most stocks trade for about two to five times forward sales. But it's an acceptable valuation on a high-growth Internet company, and it's similar to the valuation on Tencent.
As much as Facebook says it does not plan to go public, a securities law could force its hand. By law, when companies have more than 500 shareholders, they are considered to be essentially "public" companies, and regulators make them file financial reports. "So they might as well go public," Albukerk says.
Facebook has declined to comment on how many shareholders it has. "But if they don't have 500, they are darn close," says Albukerk. Facebook has about 1,000 employees, so as many of them leave and look to cash out by selling to investors in the private market, it is "easy to get to 500," he says.
Worth the price?
Does Facebook make enough money to justify the $30 billion valuation that analysts put on it right now?
Rather than profits, the key here is comparing sales. That's a better way to value companies in the early stages of growth, because so much money gets reinvested. Using the benchmark mentioned above -- stock price at 12 times sales -- Facebook would have to make $2.5 billion in revenue next year to justify that price.
That's twice the $1.2 billion annual revenue that Next Up Research estimates currently. But given how many users Facebook has, how much time they spend on the site and how much Facebook knows about them, that looks doable.
On average, according to one estimate, Facebook users spend 23 minutes a day on the site. "People are really shifting to sites like Facebook and Tencent in China. They are really changing the way they are using the Internet," says Wassung, of Cabot Money Management.
Facebook also knows a lot about its members, given that they reveal so much basic personal information -- and their tastes in a variety of areas, through a system that allows them to rate websites, says Anthony Arone of Gordon Brothers Group. Facebook has the exclusive on all of this data, which can be used to target advertising.
"It is like a huge Internet within the Internet that Google doesn't have access to," Albukerk says.
Besides advertising, Facebook hopes to capitalize on the popularity of online games on its site. It has launched its own virtual currency, Facebook Credits, which members use in games such as Farmville. Facebook gets a 30% cut.
And many analysts think Facebook could charge users a fee. A lot of users wouldn't like it, though, and Facebook says it has "absolutely" no plans to do this. But that doesn't rule out fees for premium services.Risks abound
As good as this looks, there are plenty of risks. Above all, there's the privacy issue, a hugely sensitive Internet topic for which Facebook has become a lightning rod.
On the one hand, the company deserves a bad rap. It clearly blundered by rolling out a "Beacon" application that shared user online purchases with all their friends. It has also come under fire for revealing too much other user information to the public.
On the other hand, it's pretty easy to lock down your account.
After several high-profile privacy skirmishes, users remain on alert for any signs of spying; protest pages spring up quickly, right on Facebook, if there's any perceived violation. Recently, rumors circulated that Facebook was sharing personal-contact information with marketers, something the company flatly denies.
"It is a constant battle for them to take advantage of all the data and the close relationship they have with users," says Darren Chervitz of the Jacob Internet Fund (JAMFX).
Another big question is whether Facebook has hit the wall on membership. Nearly two-thirds of all Internet users in the U.S. and Europe already use Facebook, Next Up Research says. That would leave emerging markets for the most growth, and Facebook has had trouble getting traction there. In emerging markets, Facebook is a top-three social-networking site only in India and Brazil, Next Up says.
Finally, there's the well-known fickleness of Internet users. Facebook, after all, has taken the lead from MySpace, which was preceded by Friendster. Facebook does have some protection here in that it has a lower percentage of teen users than other social sites, and they tend to be the most fickle, Next Up says.
But experts have begun to see signs of Facebook fatigue in the growing number of "Facebook suicides," people who close their accounts and walk away. "More people are going to start thinking, 'Who cares that you just had a sandwich or you're sitting at this corner cafe right now?'" predicts Anthony Alfonso of BDO Valuation Advisors. "It was cool at first, but people are starting to say: 'Enough's enough. I'm sick of Facebook. I want to get off.'"
If he's right and Facebook suicides continue, that might one day make anyone who buys Facebook shares expecting huge growth to follow them off the ledge as well.

Kaduna and Lagos — Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has called on former military Heads of State, General Muhammadu Buhari and General Ibrahim Babangida, and a former Vice-President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who are currently eyeing the nation's presidency next year to quit the stage for the younger generation.

Ribadu also asked the Nigerian youth to ask young Nigerians to wrest political power from them and charged them never again to allow corrupt leaders at the helm of affairs in the land.

He asked young Nigerians to rise against corrupt leaders currently in the corridors of power, just as he challenged them to take their destiny in their hands by ensuring that they elect leaders that are not corrupt in the forthcoming elections.

Ribadu, in a paper entitled, "Faith, Political Engagement And The

Nigerian Youth," at the Kaduna community town hall meeting with Nigerian youths, organized by Christian Awareness Initiative of Nigeria (CHAIN), added that the older generations led Nigeria at a very young age and wondered why they want to prevent the younger generation from taking their turn.

He said instead of the old horse that had dominated the nation's political turf to attempt to remain there, the time for young Nigerians to take their rightful place in the leadership of the country had come...

He urged the youths to register when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commences the registration of voters for the 2011 elections.

"Let us register to vote en mass, let us vote en mass and let us defend our votes by all means. We must demand for competent people and not corrupt people for good governance," he advised.

"Dear compatriots, as I said at the 76th birthday anniversary of Professor Wole Soyinka recently in Lagos, 50 years of our federalism and less of our democracy pose the challenge of what can be an endless rite of passage, if a new vision is not allowed to take over our political space.

"From industry, through civil society, to the world of research and development, towards the important crucible of leadership, politics and management of development, I call on fellow young Nigerians today to bury the preoccupation with anger, cynicism and inertia and move in the direction of taking control of the destiny of our nation."

10 August 2010

Abuja — The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may at its meeting today stick to the late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua/Goodluck Jonathan ticket till 2015.

The meeting is one of the crunch parleys fixed for this week by the PDP leadership. The National Caucus meeting holds tomorrow.

THISDAY learnt that the PDP leadership may have finally resolved to review its controversial zoning formula in such a way that would favour the South-south geo-political zone where President Goodluck Jonathan comes from.

Checks by the newspaper yesterday revealed that the party leadership has seen the need to reinforce the zoning arrangement in clearer terms and re-formalise the power rotation policy.

The Presidency last night, however, distanced itself from a purported plot by some pro-zoning canvassers to pressurize President Goodluck Jonathan to rig the 2011 election.

A newspaper had quoted the publicity secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) as alleging that the president is "under pressure to give assurance to those canvassing zoning that he must rig the elections in favour of the PDP so as to protect the interest of the clique and ensure that (General Muhammadu) Buhari does not win the presidential vote"..

On the PDP crunch meetings, a source close to the BoT of the party said the party leaders are canvassing a review of the zoning formula so that the incumbent from the South-south could take the slot and govern the country between 2011 and 2015.

The source said with Jonathan as the incumbent president, the position of the party's constitution and established convention in PDP allow him to take another shot at the office if he has not exhausted the two terms allowable under the country's constitution.

According to the source, the argument is also that President Jonathan is best suited to resolve the North/South dichotomy question as he can only contest for the presidency for one more term.

The source said: "The Constitution allows a person to be sworn in twice into executive positions, either as president or governor and since Jonathan was sworn-in first on May 6, 2010, that would count as his first term. He can only be sworn into office only one more time and he would have completed his constitutionally allowed two terms of office. That should then ensure that power reverts to the North in 2015."

This position, the source said, is "informed by constitutional order, which prescribes that the Vice- President would take over when the President dies in office".

It was gathered that leaders of the party have agreed in separate discussions on the need to marry the constitutional reality with the positions of the party and the current Nigerian reality.

"The reality on ground is that the PDP can best win the presidency in 2011 by presenting the incumbent, who has something to show the people in terms of commitment to national growth and resolving the power problem", the source said, adding: "Since the zoning arrangement was altered by divine intervention, we have to abide by that and review the formula in favour of the South-south. It then means that the South-south would retain the slot till 2015, when it (power) would revert to the North".

Another member of the party's inner caucus insisted that the PDP has to now reinforce the zoning formula to take care of eventualities such that occurred when President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua died in office.

"What we need to do now is to clearly state the succession order in the PDP constitution and that when an incumbent dies, the zoning arrangement would be reversed in favour of the Vice President or deputy governor as the case may be," the source said.

It was gathered that the view had become widespread within the party's top hierarchy by the weekend.

A source said that President Jonathan is best suited to resolve the North/South dichotomy question as he can only contest for the presidency for one more term.

He also said that the need to ensure that the people of Niger Delta where Jonathan comes from have a sense of belonging in the governance of Nigeria so as to maintain the stability of the country is also one of the other factors working in Jonathan's favour.

Meanwhile, in a press statement last night, Presidential Spokesman Ima Niboro said the claim that the President was planning to rig the 2011 poll is "outrightly false and even illogical", describing it as "an attempt to pre-judge the forthcoming elections before the fact and we would have ignored it but for the high premium the President places on conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2011".

He explained that the President is under no pressure whatsoever over the 2011 election", adding that he has made it clear that there will be credible elections next year, and has so far taken decisive steps to actualise this vision.

Niboro's statement read in part: "The President has appointed a leadership for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which has been hailed locally and internationally. He has given unequivocal support to the agency in its search for the most viable strategy to achieve excellent delivery of the next elections, and has told INEC leadership publicly that no one has "tied their hands", and therefore "there is no excuse for failure.

"We find it strange for anyone to be talking about rigging at this time of our political evolution, for those days are gone... they are dead and buried! The President urges all Nigerians to join hands with INEC to ensure that in the next elections, our votes count. Nigerians must speak with one voice and defend their votes.

"It is a new day. Let us forge ahead with new hope, a new vision and a new way of doing things".
