In what appears to be a clear endorsement of the yet to be declared intention of Goodluck Jonathan to contest next year’s election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said the contest for the party’s 2011 presidential nomination is open to all aspirants.

The chairman of the party, Okwesilieze Nwodo, who disclosed the party’s position after its National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, however, cautioned that the party has not completely abandoned its zoning arrangement.

Asked if the party had done away with zoning, he said, “When former President Olusegun Obasanjo emerged, he chose a Northern Muslim, Atiku Abubakar, as his

vice president. When the (former party) chairman resigned, he was replaced by another chairman from the South Eastern zone. Our Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Senate President and Deputy Speaker are from different zones of the country. How then can PDP be said to have abandoned zoning or rotation?” Mr Nwodo pointed out that the party had not always adhered to the arrangement in the past. He said it was only rigid about rotating power to the southern part of the country in 1998 because of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

But in 2003 and 2007, the contest was thrown open to all aspirants, irrespective of their zone.

“If our late president were alive today, we wouldn’t be contesting his right to run for a second term under our national constitution. It was his entitlement,” he said. “This will, of course, not exclude any other aspirant from any part of the country from contesting the presidential primary, as it has become the custom of our party.”

Later, Solomon Lar, the founding chairman of the party, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Mr Jonathan will be serving out the terms of the Yar’Adua/Jonathan joint mandate.

According to reports, a proposal on the zoning arrangement was presented by Mr Nwodo and it was unanimously adopted. The chairman had proposed that Mr Jonathan, currently serving out the joint mandate of the Yar’Adua/Jonathan ticket, had the right to run for a second term under the party’s national constitution.

“In the zoning formula, we did not envisage that a serving president will die in office. Today, Jonathan, by the dictates of the party constitution, is serving out the term of the mandate given by the people of our dear country. That being the case, the party believes rightly that Jonathan, who is part and parcel of the mandate, has a right to contest the remainder of their joint ticket in 2011,” he said. Ibrahim Shema, the governor of Katsina State, had moved a motion for the adoption of the continuity of the mandate and was seconded by a member of the PDP Board of Trustee, Tony Anenih.

A source, who asked to remain anonymous, told NAN that the motion did not receive any opposition, adding that the party granted a waiver to people from Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Abia and Niger States, who intend to return to its fold.

Dangerous primaries ahead

In a reference to supporters of the zoning arrangement, Mr Nwodo noted that “reforms are sometimes hard to accept, especially when we are called upon to abandon old ways of doing things. In preaching these reforms, we may have hurt the sensibility of some of our members. We, thereby, present our unreserved apology. But we, however, continue to appeal that these reforms be accepted by all our party members.” In his address, Mr Jonathan pleaded with members of the party to exercise decorum in the months ahead, as the party prepares to conduct its primaries.

“Wherever two people stay, they must disagree. Husband and wife must disagree. Siblings belonging to the same parents must disagree, and as a party, we must disagree, but what makes us strong is that we have the ability to resolve our differences.” He also appealed to members to hold dialogues instead of switching parties.

“When you have crisis, the faction that is disgruntled will first of all give their votes to another person. Even though they will regret later, but in anger they will dash their votes out. But by God’s grace, we will be resolving our crisis internally. We will not argue it in the public.”

Other party matters

Mr Nwodo announced that sections of the party constitution, especially those that affect delegates in the party’s primaries and convention, will be amended in line with the provisions of the recently-passed 2010 electoral Act.

Though the resolutions of the NEC meeting will be made public today, sources at the meeting said the online registration of members was suspended in the interim.

The source, who declined to be named, also said that the council accepted the return of the Abia State governor, Theodore Orji, to the party. However, he only narrowly got its waiver to contest in 2011 under the party platform.

Most of the party’s governors spoke vehemently against the waiver, demanding that he goes back to his ward and register, as stipulated by the party’s constitution. It took the intervention of President Jonathan to sway the council.

No sooner had Erastus Akingbola, the former chief executive of Intercontinental Bank, arrived at the premises of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday, than his travelling documents were seized by the agency who had, since last year, declared him wanted.

Furthermore, as at press time, Mr. Akingbola remained in the custody of the anti-graft agency which had a number of questions for the bank chief. According to the agency, Mr. Akingbola would likely spend the night in the agency's cell.

An operative of the EFCC told NEXT in confidence that it was imperative that the agency seized Mr. Akingbola's passport, especially as he had been on the run from the law for many months.

"Imagine that you have been looking for someone for so long. You have to demobilise him immediately. That is the first thing to do," our source said.

Interrogating Akingbola

Mr. Akingbola, who arrived at the premises of the EFCC at about 10.30 am yesterday, spent practically the whole day answering questions. He was allegedly given a 100 paged questionnaire which he was yet to complete by close of work.

Femi Babafemi, the spokesman of the EFCC who refused to confirm if the former bank chief would be detained by the commission, however said that Mr. Akinbola was being interrogated.

"He came in this morning and he is still being interrogated. I cannot say whether he will be detained or not," Mr. Babafemi said.

A source within the commission however expressed doubts that the former bank chief would be released to go home yesterday.

"The questions are much and if they have not finished questioning him, they have to keep him there and continue the interrogation tomorrow. He has several questions to answer," he said.

Returning home

The details of Mr. Akingbola's return to Nigeria remain fuzzy. Even though it is said that the former bank chief returned to the country over the weekend, there are reports that he actually returned from the Uk sometime last week.

The former bank chief fled Nigeria in August last year after he was sacked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during a major bank shake-up that swept through the country last year. His position at the bank has since been filled up by Mahmud Alabi, a nominee of the CBN.

Akingbola returns to Nigeria former CEO of Intercontinental Bank, Erastus Akingbola, has returned

The embattled former chief executive officer of Intercontinental Bank, Erastus Akingbola, has returned to the country, months after he was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Mr. Akingbola arrived in Nigeria yesterday and may be meeting with agents of the anti-graft commission today.

The former bank executive is being investigated by the commission over allegations of fraudulent abuse of credit process, insider trading, capital market manipulation, and money laundering running into billions of naira.

Last year, the Central Bank of Nigeria sacked some bank chiefs, including Mr. Akingbola, in a move to cleanse the banking sector. While his colleagues were arrested and are standing trial in some cases, Mr. Akingbola was abroad and decided to stay away from Nigeria.

In July this year, the Federal Government sent a formal request to the government of the United Kingdom for his arrest and extradition to Nigeria.

As of press time, it was unclear if the request was responsible for his decision to return to the country.

It was also not immediately known if the EFCC would arrest him...

Black and white twins celebrate 4th birthday * Their mom is of English-Nigerian heritage

THEY look like friends who met at nursery school but Kaydon and Layton Richardson are in fact twin brothers with different-coloured skin.

Black aand white twins, Kaydon, (left), and Layton Richardson, recently celebrated their fourth birthday. Photo: North News & Pictures Ltd

The twins' mother, 32-year-old Kerry, is of English-Nigerian heritage.

The boys celebrated their fourth birthday in the same week Nigerian couple, Ben and Angela Ihegboro, revealed their white daughter Nmachi to the world.

The genetic quirks make the children "two-in-a-million" rarities that have fascinated doctors.

After hearing of the Ihegboro family's incredible baby news, Kaydon and Layton's mother, Kerry, said skin colour had been on her mind when giving birth to daughter Tiyannah recently.

"I thought it was crazy. As much as it happened to me, the twins' dad is white, so for it to happen to a black couple seems even stranger," she said.

"When I was carrying Tiyannah I was wondering what colour she was going to be.

"Before the twins I would have expected that any child of mine would have my colour in them.

"But after Layton I wasn't sure what she was going to look like.

"When she was born she looked as though she was going to go dark but at about two weeks old it was clear she was white.

"I was a little surprised as I thought Layton was a one-off..

"Doctors can tell you what sex your baby is going to be but they can't tell you what colour!'

Kerry also fears the twins will stand out when they start primary school in September.

She said: "It's never been an issue up to now but I know that Layton notices the difference in their colour.

"I've tried to explain it to them in the past but last year we were in an airport in America when Layton shouted, "Mum, am I white like my dad and Kaydon's black like you?".

'That was the first time he had said that but everyone thought it was very funny.

"I hope it's not going to be a problem when they start school but kids can be cruel."

The cause of the death of a BRT passenger, Ms. Ifeanyi Dennis, who was allegedly killed by a commercial bus driver being pursued by men of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency on Thursday, is still generating controversy...

While a witness, Mr. Adetiba Joseph, told PUNCH METRO that Ifeanyi was killed by a fleeing bus driver, who was being pursued by the LASTMA men, the agency denied any complicity in the death of the 42 year-old woman.

But Joseph, who insisted that the victim was knocked down by the fleeing driver, added that Ifeanyi died on the spot before medication could be administered to her.

According to him, the death sparked off a spontaneous reaction from members of the public including commercial motorcyclists, popularly called okada riders, who allegedly pursued LASTMA officials at the scene.

Joseph said the officials later reinforced, stormed the scene and confiscated 15 motorcycles, while the motorcyclists ran away.

Joseph said, “Around 1pm, LASTMA people were pursuing one danfo motor. The danfo driver wanted to escape from LASTMA at the service lane when the officials blocked the road with their rake-like equipment. The vehicle crossed to BRT side and knocked down one of the two women that were standing at the BRT tarmac.

“We carried her to the other side of the road. We took her to a nearby hospital but before we could reach there, she was already dead. When the emergency response operation came after being phoned, they discovered that she was already dead.

“Later, people pursued LASTMA officials standing there. Afterwards the officials came and impounded 15 motorcycles from the other side.”

The Pastor of Living Covenant Christian Assembly, Onigbongbo, Maryland, Pastor Timmy Amode, where the deceased worshipped, said although he was not there at the time of the accident, information available to him corroborated Joseph‘s account.

He, however, said he witnessed when LASTMA officials came and confiscated the motorcycles.

Amode said, “She was at the BRT stand to catch a vehicle. How the bus got there and knocked her down, we do not know. Every attempt to talk to LASTMA officials there soon after was unsuccessful as regards what happened.

“When we were still at the hospital, LASTMA people came in five vehicles and cordoned off the entire area and took away some motorcycles. I do not know if they made any arrest but I am a witness at this point.”

But the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, on Sunday said LASTMA was not in any way responsible for Ifeanyi’s death.

He said the woman had had the accident before the attention of his officials at Maryland was drawn to the scene.

According to him, the officials quickly informed the appropriate rescue and accident management unit, who raced to the scene, adding that the cordoning off of the road was to aid the evacuation and possible treatment of the woman. ,

Opeifa said, “Our record has it that there was an incident around Channels Television at Maryland. The attention of LASTMA was drawn to a woman that was killed by a hit-and-run-driver.

“We called Lagos Ambulance Emergency Response and the Ministry of Heath. “The health officials promptly came to the scene, but before they could reach there, she had already died. As soon as we got there, LASTMA stopped traffic.

“In the process of managing the traffic, the public including, okada riders, who had developed sympathy for the deceased, spoiled for a fight for not allowing traffic to continue.

“They started attacking LASTMA officials. Police came in and dispersed them and the okada riders.”

The younger brother to the deceased, Mr. Onyeka Dennis, advised the Lagos State Government to reform LASTMA to curb their alleged excesses.

He added that people should show more attention and concern for others especially accident victims and people in need.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Mr. Frank Mba, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, said he was not aware of the incident.

Swazi minister quits over allegation of royal affair

Swazi justice minister Ndumiso Mamba, the right-hand-man of King Mswati III, has resigned, the government said on Thursday, after a dissident group said he had an affair with one of the absolute King’s wives.

The dissident group, Swaziland Solidarity Network, said last week that Mamba had been having an affair with 23-year-old Inkhosikati LaDube, one of Mswati’s 14 wives, and was netted in a police sting at a luxury hotel owned by Mswati.

“There is a story that has gone far which is currently being circulated ...The story touches on the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ndumiso Mamba,” Prime Minister Banarbas Sibusiso Dlamini told a news briefing.

“Mamba had opted to resign as both Senator and Minister of Justice ...to allow the matter to be considered by the appropriate authorities,” he said.

Dlamini did not give any details of the case or accept questions on the subject.

Mswati - who was on a two-week official visit to Taiwan when the story broke - is frequently criticised by human rights groups as a dictator who runs the country of a million people as his own personal fiefdom.

Sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique, Swaziland won independence from Britain in 1968 but has been without a constitution since 1973. Political parties are banned and the king appoints the government.

500 more expected in days || The campaign machinery of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida is set to take the nation by storm.

A few days ago, the IBB Presidential Campaign Organisation took delivery of 500 vehicles consisting of 250 Prado jeeps and 250 Toyota Camry saloon cars, Leadership Sunday has learnt. The cars are now parked at a location in Abuja, said a source close to the campaign group. Leadership Sunday was also told that the last batch of 500 vehicles (250 Prado jeeps and 250 Camry cars) will be added to the lot, making a total of 1, 000 vehicles.
General Babangida, who was the country's leader between 1985 and 1993, has indicated his desire to contest the presidential election on the platform of the PDP. He has also been a vociferous advocate of the PDP zoning policy: the party had zoned the presidency to the North after Olusegun Obasanjo's eight years. Obasanjo was succeeded by Umaru Musa Yar'Adua who died on May 5, this year, and Dr Goodluck Jonathan took over according to the dictates of the Nigerian constitution. Some members of the PDP, including General Babangida, insist that the PDP should maintain the zoning arrangement for the 2011 elections..

President Jonathan's supporters, including the recently selected national chairman of the ruling party, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, have maintained that the zoning arrangement is not sacrosanct, especially after the force majeure (Yar'Adua's death) that changed the bargain. Other likely aspirants within the PDP include General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), the current national security adviser; former Vice-president Atiku Abubakar; Dr Bukola Saraki, governor of Kwara State; and Alhaji Danjuma Goje, governor of Gombe State.

The PDP governors obviously hold the key to the party's ticket. But it is doubtful if all of them will support the same candidate during the primaries. Another source close to the IBB presidential Campaign told Leadership Sunday that, if it becomes clear that General Babangida will not get the PDP ticket, he and his supporters will move en masse into another party, probably the ANPP.

A North Carolina woman is alleging that "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino engaged in an affair with her husband, and says in court documents that the pair "recorded" their sexual encounters.
Paula Cook, who separated from her husband, Antwaun Cook, in June, filed the documents -- seeking child custody, alimony and other monetary support -- Wednesday in Mecklenburg County District Court.
The documents allege Antwaun Cook began the affair with Barrino, 26, in August 2009 after the pair met at a Charlotte-area T-Mobile store where Cook is employed.
Barrino -- the 2004 winner of the popular Fox show and an eight-time Grammy nominee -- treated Cook to a lavish lifestyle over the course of their affair, flying him to Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; New York; Los Angeles, California; and Barbados, the documents allege.
The pair "have at times recorded their illicit sexual activity," according to the documents.
A month after Paula Cook separated from her husband, Barrino is alleged to have interrupted a phone conversation between the estranged couple, telling Cook, "He don't want you. Maybe the next time you get a husband you'll know how to keep him. That's why he is here with me," according to the documents.
Barrino has appeared publicly with a tattoo on her left shoulder reading "Cook," an apparent tribute to Antwaun Cook, who is said to have a similar tattoo in the same place on his shoulder, according to the documents.
The alleged affair was first reported in November by gossip magazines and websites.
Barrino and her record label Sony Music declined to comment on the documents Sunday.
Paula Cook says that as a result of the affair, her husband became more and more withdrawn from their marriage, attributing late nights and other absences to work, the documents say.
"As [Paula Cook] contemplated ways to save her marriage and family, [Antwaun Cook] and Ms. Barrino continued to enjoy their open and notorious relationship without her knowledge and/or consent," the documents say.
Paula Cook is seeking custody of her two children, ages 6 and 2, with Antwaun Cook, as well as child support, alimony, attorney's fees and ownership of the couple's former marital home..

The two Chinese citizens arrested in connection with unlawful importation of 450.4 kilogrammes of cocaine to Nigeria have begged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to try them in Nigeria as they may face death penalty in China if deported, a source told P.M.NEWS this morning.

Photo: Mr Wang & Mr Fong

Reacting, NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said this morning that the two Chinese citizens and their Nigerian clearing agent will all be prosecuted in Nigeria.

The suspects include Richard Wang, 62, an importer of textiles and shopping bags and Chiusen Fong, 54, a timber merchant as well as a Nigerian Alhaji Inua Mohammed, 56, who is a clearing agent.

NDLEA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said in a statement this morning that the decision to arraign the suspects in the country have kept the Chinese in high spirits since the law in China stipulates capital punishment for drug trafficking.

The NDLEA boss said the agency is not considering extradition for now, adding that the suspects will be charged to court in Nigeria as soon as investigation was completed.

Meanwhile, more revelations have emerged about the consignment that was filled with drug. The clearing agent told NDLEA investigators that he was contacted by Richard Wang to clear the container and take it to Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, South West Nigeria.

He said: “I am a clearing agent. Richard Wang came to me to clear a container. He told me the container had cigarettes and gave me 3 million naira for the clearance”.

However, Fong, in his statement, told investigators that he gave Wang N5 million to clear the container. When Wang was arrested, he said that he was working for Chiusen Fong who lives in Kano. That was how they were all nabbed.

The seizure of 450.400kg of cocaine imported from Chile at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, agency sources revealed, was masterminded by an international drug syndicate that smuggles cocaine from South American countries to West Africa.

The anti-drug agency had kept tab on the consignment which originated from Chile and passed through Peru, Bolivia and Antwerp to Tin Can Island Port (TCIP).

According to Giade, “the drug was neatly concealed in customised floor wood inside a container which was cleared and taken to a private warehouse at Iganmu, Lagos”.

In June 2006, 14.2 metric tons of similar substance was intercepted at the same port

A Nigerian, Alache Ode, who is an aide to the Minister of

National Planning, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE), by Queen Elizabeth. The OBE is an equivalent of Nigeria’s Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

Minister of State for Information and Communications, Labaran Maku, who spoke to pressmen at the presidential villa after the weekly federal executive council meeting, said Ms. Ode was honoured because of her humanitarian services to the UK communities. “She committed nearly 18 years building the capacity of over 50 organisations to become effective,” he said. “She also developed a programme that attracted three million pounds sterling to send to over 600 skilled UK Diaspora professionals to work in about 18 countries of Africa and Asia.” He also said Ms. Ode developed the capacity for “funding and building framework for an 18 million pounds (DFID) grant to small and Diaspora organisations, and that she has been advocating at over 30 international conferences perspective and approach to development to become mainstream.”

The minister said the federal government is touched by the woman’s passion for service and urged other Nigerians to emulate her spirit. He added that the intriguing thing about Ms. Ode’s work was that it was done for free as inspired by her passion for service for global inclusion of disadvantaged personsl; and that she dedicated it to all the unsung heroes of Nigeria, her native Benue State, the people of the Middle Belt, and to God Almighty...

Speech on The Diaspora Option

The Diaspora option to support job creation

Alache Ode, Chairperson of the Board of the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD) and manager of the Diaspora Volunteering Initative of the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), focused her presentation on the Diaspora contribution to rural and business development.

Diaspora is a very contested concept, which is constantly evolving. Aspects of the working definition include de-territoriality, hybridism (link to home and host countries) and emotional, family or financial links to the home country. Belonging to a Diaspora also depends on the self-definition of the migrant.

Two views of Diaspora exist: Some attach rather negative connotations to Diaspora, victimizing them and attributing loss of origin and place to Diaspora. The view which is preferred by Ms. Ode is a more positive one. For her, Diaspora is associated with voluntary, young and spore. Diasporas can be valued as seeds providing new perspectives on our connected world.

AFFORD case studies show the potential of Diaspora-led volunteering activities to transform rural communities through sustainable business development. Programmes included business training and mentoring of small businesses through volunteers, partnerships with universities, local and national governments departments, negotiation of new financial packages with banks for small businesses, support of cooperatives or establishment of business centres. All this resulted in remarkable job creation through micro and medium enterprises and entrepreneurs.

As concluding remarks, Ms. Ode called for “the Diaspora option”, which means to develop concrete, realistic and practical policies that draw upon Diaspora, their knowledge, skills and financial resources to stimulate, harness and consolidate development.

There are lingering doubts that various sources are trying to sweep under the carpet the huge sums of money found on the Freed Journalists by their captured Kidnappers who have shown great honour amongst thieves by denying the amounts credited to have been stolen from the journalists.Na 1.5m we collect not 3million

Article
The four journalists released by kidnappers in Aba yesterday are now the subject of deep controversy following their disclosure that their abductors robbed them of N3 million ($25,000). In their testimonies to their colleagues shortly after they arrived in Lagos yesterday, the group, led by Wahab Oba, the head of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Lagos state and a staff of the federal ministry of information and communication, Adolphus Okonkwo of the Voice of Nigeria, Sylvester Okere of the Champion Newspapers, and Sola Oyeyipo, another Lagos-based freelance journalist, said the kidnappers took away the money from them as soon as they were carjacked and driven into the bush. In an account captured by the Lagos based Punch newspaper, Oba said, “When we went for the NEC meeting, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, gave us N1m as fulfilment of his promise to bankroll a national seminar which we had in the state three months ago.

“He also gave each NEC official N100, 000 as transport fare. I also had some money on me because I had been travelling recently. Other people had some money on them too.

“The kidnappers collected all the money. If you value what they collected from us in terms of cash and other things, it is almost N5m. We had about N2.6m cash and the car which we bought not long ago valued at N2.4m was also stolen.”

These explanations constitute the first time that professional journalists are admitting in public to have collected bribes, in this case called “seminar bankroll” or “transport fare.” It is leading to a public gasp about the way journalists do their official business, and the legality of carrying such huge funds around in contravention of the Nigerian money laundering law. The men spent eight days in the den of the armed men in deep forests in the Southeast.

it had been reported that the journalists, in addition to participating in a National Executive Council meeting in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State two weeks ago, also visited Governor Godswill Akpabio and gave him a special award tagged 'Responsive Governance Award'. It is unclear what Governor Akpabio, a notably corrupt governor, may have accomplished to win the “award,” or even whether the award was officially recognized by the NUJ bylaws.

Akwa Ibom state government house sources told our reporters that each of the journalists that met with Akpabio received bribes aimed at silencing the media. One source told our reporters that in this particular circumstance, each of the visitors individually received N1 million while the national executives of the National Union of Journalists, including the president, Mr. Mohammed Garba, collected a N20 million gratification from Mr. Akpabio.

Our sources further said that the information leading to the kidnap of the journalists emanated from the state, specifically from persons who were aware that the governor had doled out the bribes to the journalists. That may explain why they were trailed as soon as they left Government House, one source said.

Recently, spotlight on the penchant of Governor Akpabio to use bribery as an instrument of official policy. In a high profile case meticulously covered by SaharaReporters, we demonstrated the "gift" of a bulletproof Mercedes Benz GL 450 SUV worth $500,000 to the chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri. After we concluded the exposé, Mr. Akpabio hired some journalists to visit the state to inspect the vehicle, which he claimed to be a “security vehicle” owned by the state.

Further investigation revealed that the license plate on the vehicle displayed by Akpabio was fake, as it belonged to a different car make which was licensed to one Chief C. Orizu, with an address of Adotolo Nnewi in Anambra State. A few days later the supplier of the vehicle, Charles Ahize, also issued a statement in The Sun newspaper in which he contradicted the governor’s claims, saying he had privately supplied the $500,000 bullet proof car to Mr. Akpabio. This confirmed the car was purchased privately, contrary to Akpabio's alibi that it was owned by Akwa Ibom state.

The latest jamboree by the NUJ leadership to Akpabio and the granting of a dubious award to the governor was done quid pro quo to help him further evade scrutiny for his corrupt ways. It is instructive that the leaders of the NUJ in Lagos have studiously avoided investigating the source of the car Akpabio gave to the EFCC’s Waziri, even after the licence plate number found on the vehicle displayed by the governor bore a Lagos number. It is even more disturbing that the Lagos press has generally ignored the story even after the Lagos State government declared Governor Akpabio’s licence plate to have been forged.

It would be recalled that in one of our stories last April, following the invitation of selected journalists to Government House in an effort to discredit the story about Governor Akpabio’s bribe car, we wondered why none of the journalists asked any professional questions.

The possession of huge sums of cash by the journalists was already a source of rebuke by a police officer last week, who wondered aloud why the journalists had not traveled by air, given the long distance to their destination. But a Lagos-based journalist said that his colleagues probably didn't want others to notice when they returned to Lagos, as a quiet return from such trips enable them to hide the booty from politicians from such colleagues who may want a cut.

Also, a Lagos based attorney said that by their admission the journalists have contravened Section 1 of the Money Laundering legislation of 2004, which prohibits individuals from carrying more than N500,000 on them while companies may carry up to two million Naira.

The kidnapped journalists arrived Lagos yesterday in private jet chartered and paid for by the the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi.

As expected the revelations by the freed journalists have gingered Nigerians on the Internet. Social networking sites, chatrooms and internet forums are buzzing with the story and people are pressing for answers.

As one commentator asked, "Is the Lagos press going to investigate the obvious issues in this case, or are they going to protect their colleagues? Where did the journalists and their driver get a whopping N3 million that they admitted the kidnappers took from them? Under what conditions does the NUJ go around the country to give “awards” to politicians, and what was Governor Akpabio’s award for?

Are members of the NUJ executive immune to the provisions of the Money Laundering Act of 2004?”
Another commentator asked, “Can journalists who collect transport fare and mobilization fees report a governor professionally? This is a big scandal,” he added.

Kidnappers Deny 3m Cash Stolen No Honour Amongst Thieves & kidnappers

Contrary to the widely publicised statement credited to the just released Chairman Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Wahab Oba, from kidnappers den that the sum of N3 million was seized from them, the kidnappers were said to have denied the amount saying they only collected about N1.6 million from them.

It will be recalled that Oba on arrival in Lagos from Abia State Sunday evening, told Journalists that a total sum of N3 million was seized from them by the kidnappers.

Oba, who was also taken to the headquarters of the State Security Service SSS at Shangisha, Ikosi- Isheri Local Council Development Area Monday evening, told Vanguard that the kidnappers had put a call across to some people denying ever collecting such amount.

His words: "I was surprised when I saw the report today that a sum of N3 million was seized from us by the kidnappers. I must have been misunderstood, what I meant was that the total value of what the kidnappers seized from us would amount to about N2.5 million or N3 million in total value.

"At least about N1.6 million in cash was seized from us instantly while other properties such as Vehicle, a Serena Space bus, Laptop, camera, tape recorder, personnel effects, wristwatches, among other valuables should worth about N2 million.

"We got N1 million from Governor of Akwa Ibom, Mr Godswill Akpabio as a fulfillment of his promise to assist us for a project we are embarking on in Lagos while other money collected from all of us should be about N600,000

Parents and guardians of students of Kenneth Dike Memorial Secondary School, Awka, Anambra State, yesterday stormed the premises of the Anambra government house to protest what they termed government's silence over a recent shooting incident in the school that left 13 students injured..

On June 21 this year, gunmen suspected to have been hired by a land speculator involved in a land dispute with the school, opened fire at students of the school, moments after the students had pulled down the walls of the encroaching building. The attack sent 13 students to the hospital with varying degree of injuries.

The attack came barely six days after an attempt to abduct the school principal was foiled when the students pursued the kidnappers and drew the attention of the police. One of the kidnappers was arrested by the police.

Since the shooting, the school had been unceremoniously vacated by both students and teachers, even with examinations close at hand.

Worried by this development, parents of the students decided to take their case to the state government.

The chairman of the Parents-Teachers-Association, Innocent Anyaso, told NEXT that they were unhappy with government's silence, which he described as unusual.

He said the students had earlier trooped to government house to see the governor but were told he had travelled, a development that he said necessitated the visit of the parents.

Later, while channelling their grievances to Chuks Iloegbunam, representative of the government, the protesters requested the government to, among other things, fence the school; provide adequate security; help in offsetting the bill of the hospitalised students, and make the police to mount a checkpoint there..

Peaceful protest

Mr. Iloegbunam commended the parents on their peaceful disposition, as well as the role their children played in foiling the kidnap attempt on the principal. He restated government's commitment to the issue of security, and cited the recent resolution of south east governors to clamp down on kidnappers in the region.

He also noted that as part of the state government's commitment to the safety of the citizenry, each of the communities in the state had recently been given a N500, 000 security vote.

He recalled that the government had also mandated town union leaders to take care of security in their domains or risk being removed.

Mr. Iloegbunam promised to channel their case to the state governor, Peter Obi, once he returned from his trip.

True story of, one of Africa's leading gospel artistes and Globacom ambassador, Sammie
Okposo’s arrest in

Following the misleading story reported by Evening Express, a Scottish evening paper, on the arrest of one of Africa's leading gospel artistes and Globacom ambassador, Sammie Okposo during his honeymoon in Aberdeen over a racist statement, the artiste and the Nigerians who were present at the scene of the ugly incident have risen to set the records straight.

According to information made available to us by MME (Media & Marketing Experts), Sammie Okposo's PR company and different comments of eye witnesses posted on different websites especially on nairaland.com, Sammie and his newly wedded wife, Ozioma in the company of their friends, Mr and Mrs Efemua, also Nigerians, had gone to a restaurant known as Jimmy Chung's on Aberdeen's Beach Esplanade to attend to their noisy stomachs.

They were said to have arrived at the restaurant at exactly 4.30pm in the evening but were not aware that lunchtime ended at 5pm. One of the attendants, a lady, who some Nigerians described as very violent, announced to them few minutes later that they have to rush their food and leave the restaurant before 5pm or else they will be charged for both lunch and dinner.

At this point, Sammie was already serving the food while the others were sorting out where they would sit.

Witnesses said the Nigerians questioned the attendant. They wondered why she had not informed them when they arrived, saying they would probably have waited till 5pm before settling down in the restaurant.
Photo:One location of the chinese restaurant in Aberdeen
The argument was said to have attracted the attention of the manager of the restaurant (identified as Ronny Shui Hung Yung), who aggravated the issue the more. Another lady allegedly went ahead to drag Sammie's shirt, ordering him to stop dishing out the food; an act that so many people in the restaurant described as unprofessional and barbaric. But Sammie was said to have taken it easy. “He told her politely that she shouldn't have pulled his shirt. At this point, the manager of the restaurant was already harassing Sammie's wife and the pregnant wife of his friend, Eloho Efemua, who happens to be the younger sister of popular Nigerian actor, Fred Amata.

"When Sammie turned back after the violent attendant pulled his shirt and realised the manager was raising hands and pointing accusing fingers at his wife and the pregnant lady in a very disrespectful and demeaning manner not meant for a gentleman and a service provider, he immediately swung into action and warned the manager in a very hard tone to desist from harassing and accusing his wife and Mrs Efemua after he had been briefed about what happened", a witness told Rhythm and Sounds. This photo Sammie & wife about to wed !

When the manager wouldn't stop but was getting more motivated, we heard that Sammie, who was very shocked and displeased at that point, told the manager that he should make sure his fingers don't touch his wife and that if he is tired of running this kind of restaurant, he should return to his country. Immediately Sammie made this statement, the manager wrote down Sammie's friend's car number and called the police to report a racial statement being made against him.

Having realised he had called the police, Sammie urged his wife including the other couple that they should wait for the police's arrival and thrash out the issue once and for all. It was reported that the police didn't arrive until 30 minutes after the distress call but the couples waited outside the restaurant till they arrived.

What however shocked the people present at scene, we gathered, was that the Scottish Police, as professional as they claimed to be, failed to ask any questions from the two Nigerian couples before taking them to the police station after listening to the restaurant manager. This, we heard, infuriated some Nigerians present at the restaurant and they registered their displeasure with the restaurant management.

Speaking for the first time on the incident, Sammie Okposo told journalists in Lagos who have been eager to hear from him that he is only a victim of circumstance. “It is true they took us to their police station without listening to our own side of the story but we played along with them as good and law abiding citizens of Nigeria. After the court in Aberdeen did a thorough check on me from all the countries I have visited, they said my record is clean and impeccable.

I was released the next day without making any official statements. But if the manager of the restaurant presses the issue further and it results to a court case, my lawyer in Scotland, Michael Munro will handle it. I don't regret my actions for speaking up against bad and rude behaviours from the staff of Jimmy Chung's. I don't regret defending my wife as a true African man,” he said.

Sammie's wife, Ozioma was very sad about the incidence. In her words, “We could afford to go to anywhere in the world for our honeymoon, but we chose to visit Aberdeen because of all the good things we had heard. We have been emotionally, mentally, financially and physically drained by this trip; which brings us to one conclusion: that going to Aberdeen for our honeymoon was the biggest mistake we would ever make in our marriage”.

Okposo was alleged to have caused alarm or distress to Ronny Shui Hung Yung by shouting, swearing and uttering racial remarks at the Aberdeen restaurant. He was also accused of acting in a racially aggravated manner by Scottish Evening Express. Against the ethos of journalism, the paper published the story based on the reports of the restaurant's manager, whose unprofessional conduct has greatly been criticised, without listening to the other party and the eye witnesses.

Sammie Okposo's lawyer in Nigeria revealed that Sammy is going to raise a case of personal harassment and aggravation against the restaurant management and the violation of his human rights by the Aberdeen police. The lawyer is filing a petition to the Nigerian High Commission and United Nations, where he is an ambassador.

One of the comments posted on nairaland.com, based on the experience of the writer at the said restaurant, says “the distasteful, snotty and poor attitude of staff of Jimmy Chung Restaurant resonates in good measure to all of its outlets in the Granite-city of Aberdeen; as if to say it was a management requirement for its staff. The attendants and staff look down their nose at you as if you're a fly in their soup”.

Marvelous Benjy Is Married: Popular dancehall act, Benjamin Ukueje, a.k.a Marvellous Benjy is now married. The wedding took place on July 9, 2010 in Bayelsa State. Speaking on his new status, the once upon a time rave of the moment described being married as one of the greatest things that has ever happened to him. “I'm very happy because I have found someone that truly loves me and I am very grateful to God about it. My attraction to her is divine because it is not something anybody can explain. I love her so much”, he said.

The Ajegunle-breed act with lots of energy-sapping dancing skills however, did not marry a Nigerian. His wife, Vanessa is a Spanish based in London.

The wedding took place at the State Registry where the lovebirds exchanged marital vows. The reception followed immediately and it was well attended by prominent Bayelsa State indigenes.

Marvellous Benjy became a household name after the release of his popular song, 'Suo' under Kennis Music Imprint. But since his fallout with the record label that promoted him massively, little or nothing has been heard about him musically. The talented dancehall act however said he has been working.

Federer crashes out of Wimbledon

Roger Federer crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday in a foul mood as he blamed injuries on his shock exit to Tomas Berdych.

Swiss superstar Federer, 28, tried to rally against Czech Berdych, 24, before slumping to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat.

Berdych's aggressive display left the defending champion's bid for a seventh crown in tatters.

Grumpy Federer now plans to take two weeks' holiday and will not tune in to watch the final on television on Sunday.

He insisted he needs the rest because he has problems with his back and leg which he attributed to the upset.

"I couldn't play the way I wanted," moaned Federer. "I am struggling with a little bit of a back and leg issue.

"That doesn't quite allow me to play the way I would like to play. It's just uncomfortable, you can't play freely. "And when you can't play freely, that's the kind of performance you get.

"It is frustrating to say the least and I am looking forward to some rest anyway. I am going to have two weeks' vacation. I doubt I'll watch the final as I'll be away."

Federer's reverse meant a second successive Grand Slam quarter-final loss after reaching 23 consecutive semi-finals until the French Open, where he was beaten by Sweden's Robin Soderling.

The star has also slipped behind Rafael Nadal in the world rankings.

But he dismissed suggestions he is past his prime following 16 grand slam titles. He added: "God, I can't wait for Paris and Wimbledon to come around next year.

"They have been frustrating tournaments for me this year but quarters is still a decent result.

"I can get back to my best - that's why I am here."

Berdych faces Serbian Novak Djokovic, 23, who eased into his second Wimbledon semi-final yesterday by outclassing Taiwanese giant-killer Lu Yenhsun 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Czech Berdych was unimpressed with Federer's comments but said: "I don't know if he is looking for some excuses."

DANCER Ife Kuku last night became the fifth person to be kicked out of the Big Brother house.

The 25-year-old dancer was the bookies' hot tip to be booted off the reality TV show as she faced the public vote against Mario and Jordan lookalike Corin.

Leaving the house in a short grey dress, Ife was met with a mixture of boos and cheers from the noisy crowd.

She left after gaining 56.5% in the public vote.

Before leaving, the former Cheryl Cole backing dancer reassured other housemates: "I feel alright."

The skin-headed groover from Milton Keynes gained a reputation as a cry baby and fell out with several housemates including Caoimhe and Shabby.

But she put on a brave face and laughed while speaking with host Davina McCall.

When asked about her long list of spats, she said: "I have always been honest. There was no point making up with people after what I had said about them in the Diary room."

Ife Kuku Biography

The earliest vivid memory I have from my childhood, was sitting in my room watching Pop School the Musical. I remember rushing home to watch Sister Sister and Moesha, as I grew my musical taste changed. I started listening to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and India Arie.

One of the first tapes I brought was the Spice Girls. When I was fourteen a Lauryn Hill album found its way into my collection I have been a fan ever since. I grew up in Milton Keynes, and was part of a very large family “not the conventional kind “ Performing has always been a huge part of my life. School plays, to debating society, choirs, dance shows any chance to stand in front of an audience..

The thrill of being in the moment was scary but a wonderful feeling that would go away once I was off stage. My parents built a conservatory at the back of the house that I used it as my studio to practice and practice I would make up songs and routines and ask friends and family to come in and watch. I was never the strongest singer or dancer however I knew it was something that I wanted to do forever and that the only way to make that possible would be to practice and get better each day.

I moved to London when I was sixteen and trained at a performing arts school, it was so much fun I felt really grown up so many other people to work with who all shared the same love for singing and dancing. When I graduated I threw myself out there and began auditioning for shows, video adverts, Dance Company’s anything and everything. I had a job in a theatre, bar, café and telemarketer, I applied for anything that was flexible and that would fit around my auditions.

Seven years passed and I accomplished so much more than I could of expected and got to travel the world. In 2008 I made the decision to move in a different direction and focus on singing and writing my own songs, and I hope to continue and push forward and someday perform my songs in front of a large audience.

Educational pursuit is usually an exercise reserved for free men and women who set their eyes on certain life accomplishments. But that is not the case with Ayinla who until December 2008, when his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, was awaiting the hangman's noose. As a matter of fact, he was on death row for ten years, five months before his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Ayinla had been sentenced to death in 1998 after he was found to have been involved in a robbery operation that took place in Mushin, Lagos sometime in 1997.

Speaking with our correspondent, who had accompanied a non-governmental organisation on a visit to the prison, Ayinla, who seemed to have grown deep in the Christian faith, waxed philosophical and spiced every sentence with quotes from the bible as he chatted with our correspondent. He said he had never lost the hope of regaining his freedom one day, and that hope had fired his desire for education, which he said would guarantee his independence and ability to reintegrate himself into the society as soon as he is set free. Fortunately for him, his sense of purpose has attracted help and support from the various religious organisations that throng the prison on a daily basis.

He told our correspondent that he was getting himself educated so that he would not constitute a liability on anyone whenever he walks out of the prison gates. He said, "I have never lost hope of getting a reprieve one day. My hope of survival became strong because I was lucky to become one of those that were moved out of the condemned cell in Abeokuta prison in 2005 as a result of congestion in the prison. In Abeokuta, the condition was so hard because we were clamped in a dingy cell as people on the death row. But when we arrived here, we became freer. We could even walk about, and this, to me, is the green light that I might one day breathe the air of freedom.

"I did not waste time to make good use of the temporary relief. I dusted my books. Before I was arrested in 1997, I already had my O' level certificate, which was not 100 per cent okay. So, in 2006, a year after we arrived here, I took the SSCE and because of my very long years in confinement, I only made three papers, including Mathematics, Economics and Commerce. In 2007, I sat for it again. This time around, I had seven papers while my English was withheld. I was not satisfied because I wanted to have everything at one sitting. I applied for SSCE again, but miraculously, the English which had been withheld was released. Thank God for the study centre of NOUN here. I wanted to start a degree course in Economics, but because the course is not available here, I opted for a diploma. But by the special grace of God, I will still pursue it."

According to the transcript of his 2007 SSCE result with examination number 5250826006, Ayinla had the following result: Commerce A1, Financial Account A1, Economics B3, Government B2, Islamic Studies B3, Literature in English B3, Mathematics B3, Agric Science F9 and English Language C4. Ayinla said he was proud to be a NOUN student pursuing a diploma in Financial Management with matriculation number NOU070292850.

Seeing the way he bubbled with life, one could not but ask how he managed to look so cheerful in a prison environment. To this, he said, "The prison is not supposed to kill your spirit. Rather, it is supposed to reform you. If I had been aware of the consequence of my behaviour, I would never have gone into crime. You see, all those cautions by the elders do not make any meaning to a young man who does not understand the meaning of freedom. In my own case, I got influenced by friends and the company that I kept. I was implicated in the robbery case even though I was not directly involved. But I knew about it and I have since regretted my action. How many young men do you want to tell to stop following friends on the streets? It is not easy. But I am wiser now."

Explaining the positive change in his life, Ayinla said he had been lucky to have people around him, particularly his family and visitors to the prison.

He said, "My mother died exactly three weeks after I was sentenced to death in 1998. I regret that incident a lot, and I don't know how I can forget that for the rest of my life. My fiancée has been so wonderful. While I was in Abeokuta, we lost contact. But when I arrived Lagos, she got to know about it and has been very supportive. She has really surprised me. I don't know how many ladies can be so faithful. I must confess that her case has been giving me so much concern because I don't want to lose such a dedicated lady. And the only way to achieve that is to get my freedom which I fervently pray and fast for.

"Nigerians are wonderful people. I can not quantify the love and support I have enjoyed from those who have come across me in prison. The case of one Captain Salami shocked me. He was the person that paid my first school fees at NOUN, which was N48,000. He met me during one of his visitations to the prison and after finding out about me, he paid the money. There are so many of them that I can not begin to tell you now. So, if you see me keeping hope alive, the reason is that so many people have shown their belief in me that I would one day become a personality in the society.

"I pray that Nigerian authorities, especially the government of Ogun State would have mercy on me and commute my life imprisonment to total freedom."

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Prison Service, Mr Ope Fatinikun, was delighted at the progress Ayinla had made in his educational pursuit in spite of his situation. He told our correspondent on the phone that the NPS encourages inmates to get themselves busy and prepare for possible re-integration into the society whenever they walk out free.

"We discovered that about 80 per cent of the inmates, when they come in, they don't have education, and we guess that is why they went into crime. So we ask them to tell us their areas of interest; whether they want to go to school or train in vocational skills. We have adult education centres in the prisons where inmates can go to primary school and secondary school. In fact, we have WAEC and JAMB centres in Ikoyi and Apapa maximum prisons. We have NOUN centres in both Ikoyi and Apapa where inmates can go further in their education. We train those who prefer to go for vocational skills of their choice," he said.

From Uzoma Okere to Mother & children !
It is usually not uncommon to hear certain unpleasant stories that touch the heart but it is thechildreninuniform.jpgexceptional when those involved as key players are supposedly highly placed personalities. Sad to note, though, is the fact that the story of Mrs. Paulynn Midalah

who narrates her ordeal in the hands of Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan, wife of former Chief of Naval Staff has taken a toll on innocent and unsuspecting Nigerians. Unfortunately too, Nigerian security agencies are used as decoy to perpetrate these heinous acts.

Hear her:

My name is Mrs. Paulynn Midalah; I am married with two children. On Tuesday, 28th April 2010 my children; Favour and Marvel, whose pictures appear above, left home to their school Trinity Anglican Primary School , Gwagwalada, Abuja FCT.

?I left my house around 10.30am that day to buy something, and then I received a telephone call from my children?s Headmaster that a certain woman had come to the school with armed Naval officers to pick my children from school. I immediately, put a call through to my son Favour?s phone and he picked it and said ?Hello Mummy?, but soon after he had said hello Mummy, I guess some one had collected the phone from my child.

Continuing, she revealed that ?After that all attempts to reach him on that phone proved abortive as my phone tells me the number is switched off. I became very worried and rushed to the school and met the Headmaster who confirmed that a certain woman came with armed Naval officers to pick my children from school and bundled their bicycles into her bus vehicle, I was seriously alarmed and confused; who could this be? Is it a kidnap or something? These were the questions begging for answers in my mind.

?The Headmaster couldn?t remember the name of the woman who came to the school to whisk my kids away. I rushed to the school gate but couldn?t find any one to give me proper briefing. I rushed back to the house and the kids were not home, I was more confused and started running up and down our Estate at Phase 1, Gwagwalada Abuja FCT and somewhere around our estate I sited a white bus carrying the children?s bicycles. I later learnt that it was Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan, Wife of a Former Chief of Naval Staff who came to my children?s school with armed Naval Officers to whisk my children away.

In tears, she explained further that ?My husband had worked for Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan before but he left them three (3) years ago after my family had a deadly motor accident on 17th March 2007 , where he sustained compound fracture and even lost his left elbow and my son Favour?s face was badly battered by glasses that we had to take him for plastic surgery. She abandoned us to our fate and my husband had to sell the house he just built then, to afford money for surgery on his badly fractured left hand. My husband still has about fifteen (15) iron screws in his left hand up till today and my son?s face, where surgeons removed glasses from 3 months, 6months and even 1 year after the accident is still there as prove of man?s inhumanity to man.

To her chagrin, according to Mrs. Paulynn Midalah, ?When I saw them, I confronted them that what is the problem? They said I need to go with them to the Gwagwalada Police Station which I did. On arrival at the Police Station, Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan started making some allegations against me and my husband and asked the Police to lock me and my children up and never to release me until my husband surfaces, that she has an unsettled issue with my husband.

Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan, in her bid to oppress the innocent woman and her young children and as wife of former Chief of Naval Staff however ensured that they were unlawfully detained by the police.

?I told her that I didn?t work with her so what is my offence? She couldn?t answer me but kept raining abuses on me and said that I must sleep there at the Police Station. I and my children aged seven and nine years eventually slept at the Gwagwalada Police Station in their school Uniforms.

Narrating her traumatic experience, Mrs. Paulynn Midalah said ?The following morning my family friends and well wishers prevailed on the Police to release the children that it was unlawful for them to have allowed innocent children to sleep at the Police Station in their School Uniform for something they didn?t know anything about. Even before my children could be released, the Inspector Crime at Gwagwalada Police Station had to call Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan to obtain her permission.

?Soon after my children were released I was returned to the cell and all attempts by our family friends and well wishers including that of a Lawyer to bail me proved abortive as the police vehemently refused to grant me bail saying I must get clearance from Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan or my husband comes. I told them that my husband was out of town on a business trip but they would not listen.

Revealing more of her ordeals in the hands of the Nigeria police, she said ?In the police cell I was subjected to the most dehumanizing experience in my life as I had to lay down on bare floor that has been contaminated with urine and human excrement, with maggots scattered all over the room. I spent three days at Gwagwalada Police Station, that is 28th, 29th and 30th April, 2010 .

?By afternoon on Friday, 30th April, 2010 the Inspector Crime at Gwagwalada Police Station instructed a junior police officer to bring me from the cell and when I was brought out he said that Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan wanted to speak with me and he handed his mobile phone over to me.

?Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan then said since I have refused to tell them the whereabouts of my husband she has instructed the Police to transfer my case to Kuje where I would be jailed. Not too long after we spoke, the Police at Gwagwalada Police Station made arrangements and I was taken to Kuje Police Station where I was also put into a cell where my experience with urine, excrement, maggots and mosquitoes continued for another four (4) days.

?Again here at Kuje Police Station all attempts to bail me by my family members, friends and the Lawyer was denied because according to the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) Kuje Police Station the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was not around and also that Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan has not given them go ahead to release me.

Lamenting, she added that ?It was not until the fifth day when my family members threatened to bring my children back to the Police Station so that all of us can remain there that the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) Kuje Police Station agreed that my family should bring someone with landed property at Kuje to bail me. When my family eventually brought someone with landed property, the old story of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan are unreachable at the moment please try later, continued.

?On Tuesday 4th May, 2010 , my brother came to the Police Station and told me that they had contacted Journalists who are ready to publish the story and already Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan was being contacted by the Journalists to hear her own side of the story. Soon afterwards, the Inspector Crime from Gwagwalada Police Station came to Kuje Police Station and my brother later informed me that surprisingly the man who strongly opposed that I be released on bail at Gwagwalada Police Station is now canvassing that I be released because Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan had communicated to them that she got a call from a Journalist who wanted to hear her story before publication and that I should be released to avert the Newspaper publication.

According to her, ?the Lawyer was with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Kuje Police Station prevailing on him to either take the matter to Court or release me. I was later briefed by the Lawyer that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Kuje Police Station said they don?t think Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan is interested in taking the matter to Court and therefore I was released and asked to come with my husband in a week?s time.

?I spent a total of seven (7) days in Police custody between Gwagwalada and Kuje from 28th April, 2010 to 4th May, 2010 . But my family is crying foul to the entire country to come to our aid by telling Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan to leave us alone. Enough is enough! We have been pushed to the wall; enough of her torment over the years.

Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan?s past deeds

As if these acts being perpetrated by Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan and wife of the highly placed ex-Naval boss forms part of her traits, Mrs. Paulynn Midalah recalls that ?In the same manner two years ago she used Naval Ratings and abducted two of my husband?s younger brothers, beat them mercilessly and took them to her house at Maitama Abuja where she kept them in custody in her house for over one week; eventually we were contacted on phone because at that time my family was in Enugu where I was attending to both my husband and my son who had undergone an orthopedic and plastic surgeries respectively.

?At that time she said my husband was in custody of a Gwagwalada Land document which she gave to him for the purpose of verification at Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and that once the paper is returned to her that would be okay. She spoke to my husband and I on phone and my husband got in touch with a man of God named Pastor Rabinson and in company of one of our family friend who is an Army Officer, Mr. Ayuba they retrieved the document from AGIS and took it to her. We later reconciled and she apologized and begged that we must not let her husband know of this matter. Since then, we have been on our own until this time when the devil just reminded Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan about us again.

?It is obvious now that there is a threat to my life and that of members of my family; and just incase anything happens to any member of my family, Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan should be held responsible. If she has any case against us, this is a democracy and not a military regime. Let her stop using military personnel to harass a civilian and his innocent wife and children. If she has any case against us why not take the case to a law court for the judge to decide who is guilty and who pays what and how much.

Last word

Following the seemingly unending torment in the hands of Mrs. Treasure Samuel Afolayan, Mrs. Paulynn Midalah has appealed to human rights agencies to step into the unwholesome treatment meted to her and her family.

?I hereby appeal to all human right agencies to come to the aid of my family and stop this injustice against us where some ?animals? are more equal than others; where a woman would use her husband?s position as a Former Chief of the Naval Staff to abduct people?s children from school and use money and influence to deny me bail from Police custody for seven (7) days even when I am innocent of any offence?, she begged.

Too many times we think that the battle we fight is the battle that we see in front of us when the real battle really takes place in our mind.

Proverbs 23:7 Solomon wrote, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

Let me show an example of how this battle takes place: Matthew 5:21-22/5:27-28 here Jesus shows us that the real battle starts in our mind. Even if you haven’t killed someone but if you think like you want to kill that person because of your anger then you have already committed such. Even if you haven’t committed adultery but in your mind you wanted to then you have already committed such.

“The greatest area of sin in the believer’s life is not the area of actions but the area of thought. There is a whole classification of sins that we would have to call sins of the mind. What was the first sin of Lucifer? It was pride. What is that? A sin of the mind. What is lust? A sin of the mind. What is covetousness? A sin of the mind. Greed? A sin of the mind. Suspicion? A sin of the mind. Discouragement? A sin of the mind. We could go on and on. Those sins are more real to the child of God than such sins as adultery and murder and theft. That is a testimony to the fact that there is a warfare going on. Satan is attacking the mind.”

Illustration: When I was younger I really thought that we “love” through our heart. But then when I took up Biology classes they teach us that our emotions, most especially ‘love’, is an emotion coming from the hypothalamus which is actually a part of your brain.

Everything starts in our mind…
…anger …jealousy …pride …most of our problems are mainly caused by us which all started in our mind

Check out James 4:1-3…the cause of fights and quarrels starts from a battle within us

Satan targets our minds to tempt us…
Genesis 3:1-4 … Satan clouds Eve’s mind to doubt the command of God
Matthew 14:28-31 … doubt made Peter sink when he was already walking on water

This is why Romans 12:2 says “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. THEN you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

KNOWING GOD’S WILL IN OUR LIFE STARTS BY BEING TRANSFORMED* (1 Corinthians 2:14); AND BEING TRANFORMED STARTS BY THE **RENEWING OF OUR MIND.

*TRANSFORMATION – in context this is metamorphosis; as in a caterpillar changing to a butterfly; to be changed to someone else which is far from who you are before (Not I but Christ that lives in me)

**RENEWAL OF THE MIND – meaning to have a different mindset or way of thinking; way of thinking = attitude

Note: You will remain to be your old self unless you totally change the way you think…your attitude
, I want to make sure first that we are all aware of the real battle that takes place nowhere else but in our MIND.

Ephesians 6:10-12 “…we do not struggle against flesh and blood…”

Illustration: My computer had a virus so I sent it to be re-programmed or reformatted. I was told ...

that all my files will be lost when they reformat the hard drive so what I did was I saved all my files in a flash-drive. When I got my computer back it was like new – all the programs in it are newly installed…no virus! But then I transferred back all my files from my flash-drive and my computer come crashing again. Why? Because my flash-drive has a virus! Even if my computer has been reformatted, I have to make sure that the files I upload to it should be virus free.

Ephesians 4:22-24 … we are instructed to put off our old self which is corrupted by the world and to be renewed “in the attitude of our mind”.

EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN WASHED CLEAN WHEN WE WERE UNITED WITH CHRIST IN BAPTISM, IF WE STILL EXPOSE OURSELVES TO THE CARNAL WORLD THEN WE WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE WORLDLY LIVES INSTEAD OF BEING TRANSFORMED TO RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Follow up reading: Colossians 3:5-10 putting to death our earthly nature and put on new self which is renewed in knowledge (mind)

Illustration:
Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

HOW DO WE MAKE SURE THAT OUR MIND IS RENEWED?

I. Make your mind captive to Christ (Make a choice to obey Christ) Explain: BONDSERVANT

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ…”

II. Feed your mind with the Word of God (Expose your mind constantly with God’s Words)

READ: 1 Peter 2:1-3, Peter says, “Feed your mind on the pure truth of God’s Word.”

Illustration: An old Indian was explaining to a missionary that the battle inside of him was like a black dog fighting a white dog. “Which dog wins?” asked the missionary. “The one I feed the most,” replied the Indian.

Conclusion: Many of us fail in our Christianity because we fail to understand that the real battle starts in our mind. This is where the renewal should start before a transformation would take place. It will take time that is why you have to start NOW!

Illustration: She dressed in rags, lived in a house amid mounds of garbage, and spent much of her time rummaging through trash cans. The local newspaper picked up her story after the woman who was known in her neighborhood as “Dirty Mary” had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Astonishingly, in her filthy apartment police found stock certificates and bankbooks indicating she was worth at least 50 million .

This woman’s condition was heartbreaking. But from God’s point of view there are even more tragic examples of “wealthy” people who subsist on “garbage.” If Christians are controlled by lust, hate, envy, pride, impatience, or bitterness, they’re actually choosing to live off the refuse of the world.
