The meeting ended came to a close quite alright, but Afeez didn’t make it to his house at Igando, a Lagos suburb, as he was stabbed to death by one Ahmed Fatai.

The deceased had tried to save Ahmed’s mother, whose son (Ahmed), armed with knife, was pursuing her, as she kept screaming for help. But in an attempt to intervene he lost his own life in the process.

When Daily Sun visited Moshalashi Street, where the incident occurred, people gathered round the body of the husband of three wives, who was in the pool of blood.

One of the eyewitnesses, who spoke to the reporter on the condition of anonymity, painted a graphic picture of how the meeting ended and Afeez getting ready to go home before he saw the armed Ahmed pursuing his mother...

“Ahmed’s mother was screaming for help, pleading with the son to spare her life. Afeez went to rescue her, but Ahmed stopped, stared at his face and stabbed him in the neck and chest,” he said.

Ahmed’s father was said to have hired a tricycle known in Lagos as Keke Marwa to rush him to the hospital, but it was too late as the Good Samaritan died few minutes later.

Afeez, a shoemaker, lived at Orile- Iganmu for many years, before he packed into his own house at Igando with his third wife, Taiye, who is said to be five months pregnant. His first widow, Nuratu, who disclosed that they had been married for the past 20 years, said they were friends, before they decided to get married.

She said: “He was my boyfriend, when he was in Boys Academy, Lagos. I’m his first wife. This is his second wife (pointing at a woman). Her name is Kudirat. The third wife is five months pregnant and she is living at Igando. “My husband was a successful shoemaker, and was popular man, I have two boys for him. “He once had a shop at Baale Street, Orile -Iganmu, before he moved to Lagos Island and later, Igando.

He told the third wife that he wanted to attend PDP ward meeting and to return home before 4.30. But he was killed at about 1pm.” The widow also narrated how her husband had earlier refrained himself from going out and restricted his movement to his compound since January. “He just decided to stay at home and prayed, till that fateful day he was murdered. He was a peaceful person, who disliked fighting.

“He could be angry but he never raised his hands on someone,” she revealed. His second widow with whom they had two children, a boy and a girl, said she was informed of his death on phone.

She described him as a good husband, who took care of his wives and children Ahmed’s sister, Modinat, also told Daily Sun how the family concealed the tragic incident from their father because of his failing health.

But the family could not hide the death of his son for too long as the 72-year-old man knew about his murder. Pa Moshood Agboola explained that the deceased was the only one taking care of him.

He lamented: “What am I living again for? The man, who killed my son has killed me, too. Who will take care of me? I’m now 72 years old, Afeez is my first son. The person, who killed him should know that it wasn’t only my son that he killed.

“He was a peace lover, he died, trying to make peace and to save life. His mother died long time ago and I gave him good home training. “I want the government and police to investigate the case properly, and, to bring the suspect to justice. This is what the family wants.” The traditional ruler of the area, Baale Jonathan Balogun, 80, also condemned the action of the suspect.

Meanwhile, residents of Orile-Iganmu said they suspected that Ahmed ran amok few minutes, after he came back from the mosque. According to them, he suffers from what they described as momentary insanity. They claimed it might have been responsible for his action. But the Baale reasoned: “If he suffered from insanity and was stopped from killing his mother, why did he kill another person?”

Goodbye Jack Smith, hello Mohammed Malik, model British subject. Mohammed, in its various spellings, is now the favourite name for newborn boys in the United Kingdom, edging out Oliver. Those named for the Prophet of Islam ride the Clapham omnibus.

Churn is a wondrous thing, grease in the wheels of vital societies able to adjust their self-images over time. But what to think of the Mohammedization of this murky isle?

Say Luton or Bradford, and the vision that leaps is that of the alienated Muslim radicalized by jihadist teaching and ready — like the Luton-incubated Stockholm bomber Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly — to blow himself up to kill the Western infidel. Having lived in France and Germany, I’m struck on returning to Britain after 30 years not by the hard lines hiving off immigrant Muslim communities as in those countries but by the relative fluidity that produces Faisal Islam, economic editor of the influential Channel 4 News, or Sajid Javid, a bus driver’s son and Tory MP...

British identity has proved more capacious than French or German, perhaps because, even before the legacy of empire, it had to absorb the English, the Scottish and the Welsh (as well as fail to absorb the majority of the Irish.) The variegated texture of London — projects full of immigrants hard by upscale housing — stands in stark contrast to ghettoized Paris.

I’ve been listening to a BBC Radio 4 series — how polarized America would benefit from a national broadcaster of this quality! — called “Five Guys named Mohammed,” conceived to mark the name’s first-place surge. The programs are a good antidote to the simplistic caricature that conflates Muslim with threat, and a useful barometer of an integration that is uneven, certainly, but ongoing.

There was Mohammed Yahya, Mozambique-born rapper and creator of a Muslim-Jewish band. Or Mohammed Anwar, of purring Scottish brogue, the manager of a Glasgow Muslim day care center, waxing lyrical about Damson Jam and the crush he once had on actress Diana Rigg (who didn’t?) and his 21-year-old daughter, who could do big things if she was not “so laid-back, it’s just unbelievable.” And there she was, more Scottish even than he, laughing over his premature hunt for a husband for her.

Or Muhammad Hasan, a bubbly Birmingham real-estate dealer in his mid-30s, explaining his Islamic investment theory: Because under Islam you cannot charge or pay interest, Muslim investors in his property deals have to take equity rather than lend money — and that spurs motivation.

Bent on business, Hasan has had little time to look for a wife who, in his mother’s view, “has to be a Muslim and from Pakistan and a Princess Diana clone!” He’s now sipping tea with potential spouses while his binocular-armed Mom observes.

Overall, these Mohammeds see themselves as British citizens, not Muslims in the United Kingdom. Their universes may be distinct, as in attitudes to marriage, but distinct in a way that, at best, complements rather than confronts. “There’s an upward mobility and optimism that is much higher than in continental Europe,” said Muddassar Ahmed, a 27-year-old college dropout and chief executive of Unitas, a public relations firm.

Ahmed is involved in the drafting of a letter by 50 British Muslim scholars denouncing Malik Mumtaz Qadri, the 26-year-old killer of Salman Taseer, the Punjab governor assassinated this month for denouncing Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws that prescribe the death sentence for anyone insulting Islam. Qadri, self-described “slave of the Prophet,” has been feted in Islamabad.

In this context, the readiness of European Muslims, many bearing the Prophet’s name, to stand up for values of free speech assumes bridge-building importance. It reflects the experience of faith as practiced within a modern secular society.

Those bridges do not come easily. Britain has been riled in recent weeks by the conviction of Mohammed Liaqat, 28, and Abid Saddique, 27, the ringleaders of a gang that raped and sexually abused several white girls aged between 12 and 18 in Derby.

The reaction of Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary, was to say a problem exists with “Pakistani heritage men thinking it is O.K. to target white girls in this way.” He said they were “popping with testosterone, they want some outlet for that, but Pakistani heritage girls are off limits and they are expected to marry a Pakistani girl from Pakistan, typically” — so they seek the “easy meat” of white girls.

It was a neat — and explosive — argument. Vigorous debate has ensued. Racial slur? Courageous frankness? I don’t think Straw’s argument stands up to scrutiny of overall sex-crime patterns, but I do think Britain’s Muslim community needs to take a hard look at repressive attitudes toward women. The debate is salutary.

There’s a Mohammed — in fact there are many — in Britain’s future. Oliver’s prospects look more dubious given the ties between the name’s popularity and the heady success of the chef Jamie Oliver — but that’s another story of positive British change.

Last week, WikiLeaks released cables about Nigeria. The information focussed on discussions between President Goodluck Jonathan and former U.S ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders.

Since the publication of the alleged conversations, many political opponents have tried to profit from the revelations, distorting and misinforming the public in order to score cheap political points.

Some would want us to believe the cables have portrayed the president as not being equipped for the job. But away with political opponents and let us face the real contents of the leaks and look at them intelligently.

The leaked cables quoted Sanders quoting Jonathan as saying after her meeting with him on February 26, 2010, "I was not chosen to be vice president because I had good political experience... I did not. There were a lot more qualified people around to be vice president, but that does not mean I am not my own man."

Some people would want us to believe this means President Jonathan cannot be trusted: what an irony. It is uncommon, for a Nigerian politician to admit that he is not the almighty and the omnipotent. In a society where people who are trusted with public office immediately turn themselves into deities to be worshipped, never to be questioned, it is rare that a Nigerian could admit that he is not the only qualified person to occupy a public position.

Public office is not necessarily given to the most experienced, or the most educated, but to the man who is best able to bring about development, a man who embodies the two fundamentals of leadership as postulated by Steven R. Covey, the personal effectiveness guru: they are sense of service and knowledge.

President Obama had little public administration experience when he decided to run for the highest office in the country. But the American people followed him because they saw in him a man willing to admit his limitations and thus willing to learn. They also saw he had the passion and the will to serve. Leadership is not self-centred behaviour, but others centred behaviour. How many Nigerians can resist the temptation to trumpet their own credentials and exaggerate their achievements in order to impress?

According to the revelations Jonathan allegedly, also said he had intended to dissolve the Cabinet early in the week of February 22, and had planned to make that announcement at the February 24 FEC meeting but found out that Yar'Adua was returning and this dissuaded him from acting. He said the last Cabinet meeting was disastrous, included yelling and screaming, and was totally dysfunctional. Sanders reported that Jonathan said he is ‘not a politician' and had very limited experience as an administrator, but concluded, "I will not tolerate a brawl."

Is President Jonathan your usual Nigerian politician? The obvious answer is no. The president is not a desperate power monger, as some of his opponents would want the public to believe. In the heady days of the Yar'Adua debacle when the nation tottered on the brink, had Jonathan been your usual politician, our circumstances as a nation may have been different today. He would have dissolved the Cabinet, instead he was loyal to his boss when he learnt that he was arriving even though nobody told him formally or put him in the picture. But he remained calm, not desperate to prove a point, but willing and ready to step up to the plate at the appointed time. And he did.

Nigerians should be optimistic about the prospects of President Jonathan. He has the right frame of mind to determine that electoral reforms are germane to Nigeria's development. Sanders said: "His sole focus is to leave a legacy of both electoral reforms and credible elections, including changing the entire Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)."

The question we should ask is what can be revealed in leaked cables regarding other politicians in Nigeria especially the ones aspiring to become President in 2011? There is no need to wait for WikiLeaks to do that for us. A number of such names are synonymous with corruption. That is not the case with President Jonathan..

The leaks have shown him to be humble, truthful, sincere and patriotic. These may not be the best attributes for a politician in these climes but they are the attributes Nigeria needs at this time. Jonathan is a transforming leader not a transactional leader like those who have paraded the corridors of power for too long.

Read the final verdict from Sanders: "We believe the US government is firmly placed to advance our bilateral agenda, including the creation of enabling environment conducive to free, fair and credible elections with the approval and assistance of Nigeria's de facto head of state. Even if he decides to contest for the presidency, Jonathan seems sincere in wanting to leave a lasting legacy of electoral reform for Africa's most populous nation."

Lagos residents returning home after work were today held up in endless traffic congestions following the closure of all key roads, which lead to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport from Victoria.

The roads closure was traced to the visit of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) to Lagos metropolis, a situation which sparked anger and pain among Lagos residents who were returning after their stressful day. .

There were fierce-looking officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) at different junctions of the closed roads, especially those leading directly to the popular Third Mainland Bridge, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and Funsho Williams Avenue.

we gathered that the closures started more than one hour before the convoy of President Jonathan passed through the routes.

The roads were closed at about 6:15 p.m. by security operatives but were not opened until about 7:33 p.m. after the convoy of President Jonathan and his entourage had driven through the Third Mainland Bridge heading to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport.  

Thousands of road users and motorists, who were held in the traffic, were visibly furious and angry; bitterly lamenting that such blockage or closure was unnecessary during a democratic dispensation.  

Precisely around 7:28 p.m. after the convoy had passed, a good number, who had alighted from their respective vehicles, were angrily booing President Jonathan, though security operatives scared them away. .

Before the roadblocks were dismantled, we spoke with a number of road users, who were held in the traffic jam, which covered a distance of more than five kilometers and in some cases more than that.

A banker in one of the new generation banks, who plead anonymity for security reasons over the situation, saying he was fortunate to have closed early, but the hold-up had shattered the plan of being with his family on time.

The banker expressed concerns about the capacity of President Jonathan “to guarantee fundamental human rights in different spheres of life. The idea of blocking roads because of the president is uncalled for.”
 
Another resident, Mr. Segun Balogun told us that the visit of the President to Lagos metropolis “has always been a source of concern and worry due to the tradition of road closure.”
 
Balogun condemned the tradition, which he said, had put road users and motorists under unnecessary stress.

In his response, Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) on Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa appealed to Lagos residents to bear with the state government after the hold-up eased few hours later.

Opeifa added that traffic congestion experienced “all around Lagos roads was due to road closure from Victoria Island to Murtala Mohammed International Airport arising from presidential visit and the consequent closure of Lagos roads by the security operatives of the Nigeria Police.”
 
The special adviser asked Lagos residents to be patient, saying the roads would be opened as soon as the convoy of President Jonathan passed through the Victoria Island en route the airport.

Our check shows that after being held for several hours at the SSS airport office, Prof Ndibe was asked to write down his Nigerian address, and then released. However his Nigerian passport was taken from him and was asked to report back tomorrow at the SSS Lagos office in Ikoyi, Lagos , for further interrogation with the SSS director in Lagos .

president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for the second time in 2010, yesterday called journalists to his Abeokuta home to fault rumours that he was dead. The rumour had gripped Abeokuta and its environs most of Friday.

Speaking with journalists at his Hilltop Private residence in Abeokuta, Obasanjo who jumped up to show journalists that he is hale and hearty, said, “obviously if I am dead, you won’t see me in flesh and blood. I think people take delight in speculation and rumouring.”

He said it was the seventh time since he became the nation’s president in 1999 and even after he left office in 2007 that he would be confronted with such reports.

Mr. Obasanjo, who said it is only God that determines the right time a person dies, recalled how a friend of his called him Friday morning, breaking to him the news of his rumoured death.

“He said he was trying to confirm and that he had counted seven times that l have been rumoured dead since the eve of my inauguration in 1999 as a democratically elected President of Nigeria till today,” Mr. Obasanjo said.

The former president said those who indulge in this will not give up “and those who are superstitious believe that when there are rumours and speculation like this means longevity. Whether longevity or not, what I know is that until the Good Lord who has created me decide to say yes, I have reached my take off point to return to him, people may speculate, people may rumour and that will be their own handicap.

“My words to Nigerians are that wishes are not horses. People’s wishes do not make it to happen. But I know that anybody created is bound to die sometimes. When my time comes, it will not be man that will decide. It is in the hands of God,” he added.

On the controversy over whether he slumped at a ceremony in Ondo State, he said:

“I did not slump, but when I was choked in the church because of lack of air conditioner and fan, I went to my car which had an AC and after staying there for about three minutes, I felt okay and I decided to go to my host house because I have not taken my breakfast. There, I was given two pieces of banana which I ate and I returned to the church. I was shocked three days after reading that I slumped. It is part of the gimmick of selling newspapers.”

Mr. Obasanjo said Nigerians should be thankful for the year ending 2010, adding that the new year promises to be a year of high expectations and divine year for sustenance of unity for all Nigerians

Elizabeth Edwards, who as the wife of former Sen. John Edwards gave America an intimate look at a candidate's marriage by sharing his quest for the 2008 presidential nomination as she struggled with incurable cancer and, secretly, with his infidelity, died Tuesday. She was 61.

Her family confirmed the death, saying Mrs. Edwards was surrounded by relatives when she died at her Chapel Hill, N.C., home. A family friend said John Edwards was present. Two family friends said Monday that Mrs. Edwards' cancer had spread to her liver and that doctors had advised against further medical treatment.

She posted a Facebook message to friends the same day, saying, "I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces — my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope."

"The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that," she added.

The outcome of Ivory Coast's first presidential election in a decade was plunged into doubt yesterday as the constitutional council declared incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo the winner a day after the election chief handed victory to the opposition.

The new results released by a Gbagbo loyalist on national television directly contradicted those announced on Thursday, which were considered credible by the US, the African Union and the United Nations.

Ivory Coast's presidential election was meant to restore stability in the West African nation after a 2002-03 civil war destroyed the economy of one of the most affluent countries on the continent. Instead the poll is now casting a growing shadow. If Gbagbo refuses to step down, many fear the world's top cocoa producer could spiral into violence again.

The results announced on state television by constitutional council head Paul Yao N'Dre cancelled the votes from seven of the country's 19 voting districts, all opposition strongholds where the ruling party claims the vote was marred by violence and intimidation.

"The irregularities are of such a nature that they invalidate the vote (in those districts)," said N'Dre, who is also a senior member of Gbagbo's party.

Erasing those districts wiped out a significant share of opposition leader Alassane Ouattara's margin, resulting in a victory for Gbagbo. His five-year mandate officially expired in 2005. For five years he has repeatedly cancelled the date for this election, claiming the country was too volatile to assure security and later that polls were technically flawed. A 2007 peace deal broke years of political stalemate, leading to the dismantling of a UN-patrolled buffer zone.

The US has urged the parties to accept the election commission's results showing Mr Ouattara had won. "Credible, accredited electoral observers have characterised the balloting as free and fair, and no party should be allowed to obstruct further the electoral process," US National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement.

The African Union said that Thursday's results were satisfactory and asked the country's leaders to put the interest of the Ivory Coast first.

"Any other approach risks plunging Côte d'Ivoire into a crisis with incalculable consequences for the country, as well as for the region and the continent as a whole," the AU said in a statement.

The country was isolated by the ruling elite immediately after Mr Ouattara's win was announced, with a decree read on state TV saying that the nation's air, sea and maritime borders had been closed....

The Song of the Year was won by South African pop/R&B outfit Liquideep for their hit song Fairytale. The brand new MAMA award category for Best Performance of the year was won by Big Nuz, the South African house trio making waves all over the continent.

The prestigious Best International act was received by Eminem who accepted the award via satellite from the USA. The MAMA Legend award, won by the late, great Miriam Makeba, was presented by Public Enemy founder and hip hop pioneer Chuck D.

The 2010 MAMA awards opened with an explosive performance by Maybach Music CEO, Rick Ross, and closed with an unforgettable rendition of All I do Is Win featuring T-Pain, Rick Ross, Da LES and 2Face – a world first. In keeping with the tradition of the awards, the show featured an array of electrifying collaborations between artists from different parts of the continent, mixing up music genres, and cultures. Among the collaborations were Nigeria’s 2Face and South Africa’s The Parlotones. The performance of Banky W’s Lagos Party saw South Africa’s Big Nuz, Angola’s Cabo Snoop and Paul G and DRC’s Barbara Kanam also hoping aboard the stage.

What has he sold to himself so far ?

The four people that make up the leadership of the National Assembly; Senate President David Mark, his deputy Ike Ekweremadu, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and his deputy Usman Bayero Nafawa , will soon be owners of choice real estate in Abuja.

They are to benefit from the largesse of President Goodluck Jonathan who has given permission to the four men to purchase their current living quarters...

It is not clear what price has been put on the houses, but the commonwealth will pay for the president's generosity to the tune of N1.5 billion. This is the amount in the proposed 2011 budget - which NEXT got exclusive access to - that is to be spent on building new legislative quarters for the leadership of the Assembly.

At least one lawmaker is unhappy with Mr. Jonathan's decision and says it is a sign of how desperate the President has become, ahead of elections. "You know, there are so many things that he (Mr. Jonathan) wants from them (National Assembly leadership) so they are taking advantage of situation, '' the lawmaker said.

Aba (Abia) — A High Court in Aba, Abia, yesterday, sentenced a 30-year-old man to death by hanging for kidnapping and murdering his victim...

Loveday Ahuchaogu, the kidnapper from Umuawa in Isiala-Ngwa Local Government Area of the state and others still at large, were facing a four-count charge for kidnapping and murdering Mr. Francis Ajayi on July 28, 2008, at Umudike in Ikwuano, near Umuahia.

Ahuchaogu was charged with kidnapping, murder, conspiracy and robbery.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Theresa Uzokwe, in her judgment, ruled that the accused was found guilty of the offences as charged and gave Ahuchaogu seven years imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy and 10 years with hard labour for kidnapping.

The accused also got 10 years with hard labour for robbery and was condemned to death by hanging for murder...

Mrs. Ngozi Obioma, Director of Legal Services in charge of the Public Prosecution Division of Abia State Ministry of Justice, Aba Out-station, who is the lead prosecuting counsel, told newsmen shortly after the court sitting that it was a fair judgment.

Obioma said that Ahuchaogu’s defence was flimsy and frivolous against the weight and gravity of evidence against him as adduced by the prosecution.

She said the evidence against the accused was overwhelming as he was caught red-handed in the banking hall on camera while trying to cash the third tranche of the ransom money.

She said Ahuchaogu, who admitted collecting two other tranches of the ransom money, was also implicated through the SIM card of the deceased that was tendered as exhibit.

“It is my belief that justice is seen to have been done today, everybody in Abia, particularly Aba and environs, will agree that the menace of kidnapping has been on the increase, creating fears on residents.

“It will also serve as a deterrent to others who may be nursing the idea of embarking on such dangerous escapade,” Obioma said.

Mr I.U. Nwokocha, Counsel to the accused, however, pleaded for leniency for his client.

I don't want to leap to speculation, but I think this is worth thinking about further.

Wikileaks began on Sunday November 28th publishing 251,287 leaked United States embassy cables, the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The documents will give people around the world an unprecedented insight into US Government foreign activities.

The cables, which date from 1966 up until the end of February this year, contain confidential communications between 274 embassies in countries throughout the world and the State Department in Washington DC. 15,652 of the cables are classified Secret.

The embassy cables will be released in stages over the next few months. The subject matter of these cables is of such importance, and the geographical spread so broad, that to do otherwise would not do this material justice.

The cables show the extent of US spying on its allies and the UN; turning a blind eye to corruption and human rights abuse in "client states"; backroom deals with supposedly neutral countries; lobbying for US corporations; and the measures US diplomats take to advance those who have access to them.

This document release reveals the contradictions between the US’s public persona and what it says behind closed doors – and shows that if citizens in a democracy want their governments to reflect their wishes, they should ask to see what’s going on behind the scenes.

Every American schoolchild is taught that George Washington – the country’s first President – could not tell a lie. Instead, the US Government has been warning governments -- even the most corrupt -- around the world about the coming leaks and is bracing itself for the exposures.

The full set consists of 251,287 documents, comprising 261,276,536 words (seven times the size of "The Iraq War Logs", the world's previously largest classified information release).

The cables cover from 28th December 1966 to 28th February 2010 and originate from 274 embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions.
